Let the Good Times Roll this August long weekend as the 14th Annual Lakeshore Mardi Gras Festival kicks off at Colonel Sam Smith Park! This year’s festival will build on the successes of festivals past, bringing our community together with great live entertainment, a midway, kids’ zone, food vendors, and the neighbourhood’s best beer garden to the heart of the Lakeshore. Best of all, admission to the Festival is free! We can thank Ward 6 Toronto City Councillor, Mark Grimes, for the Lakeshore Mardi Gras Festival. It was his intention years ago to improve life on the Lakeshore by starting a festival for the people in the Etobicoke Lakeshore community to enjoy over the August long weekend. It grew into

what is now the Lakeshore Mardi Gras, encompassing all members of the community. The four-day Festival would not be possible, however, if it weren’t for the volunteers and organizing committee who make it a reality year in and year out. Special thanks goes out to the following individuals for all their hard work making Lakeshore Mardi Gras our neighbourhood’s best summer festival of the year:

Bring your family, come with friends and neighbours, and remember to bring your lawn chairs. Stick around for the day and enjoy all that the Lakeshore Mardi Gras has to offer. For more information, visit the Mardi Gras website at lakeshoremardigras.ca or follow the Festival on social media: Twitter: @LSMardiGras Facebook: Lakeshore Mardi Gras

THANK

YOU

I typically keep my editorial contributions to the magazine short and to the point by way of my Publisher’s Note which highlights the theme of each edition. In this case, however, I’d like to take the opportunity to write a little bit more and offer my gratitude to a number of people who have helped me get to where I am today. When I started the Etobicoke Lakeshore Press in the summer of 2015 it was my intention to highlight local businesses in my neighbourhood; Long Branch. From modest beginnings, the magazine has since grown into a monthly publication with a reach of roughly 20,000 local readers in South Etobicoke. 10

This would not have been possible without the help of some very key individuals. I’d like to start by thanking Ashley Ortins, now a graduate of Humber College’s Lakeshore Campus, who has worked diligently behind the scenes helping manage administrative and accounting functions. Her help has been instrumental in the magazine’s success. Thank you, Ashley! I would also like to thank my Ad Partners. Without them, there wouldn’t be a magazine. Thank you for your business and for becoming a part of this community of like-minded entrepreneurs that we are building together.

ETOBICOKE LAKESHORE PRESS

To you, the reader, please accept my sincerest thanks for continuing to read the Etobicoke Lakeshore Press and support its advertisers every month. You’ve helped the magazine become a household name in South Etobicoke. I can’t thank you enough!

blessed to have her by my side in life. I’m an incredibly lucky man!

Next, I would like to thank my children (aka Assistant Editors), Jaxon and Bella. They’re 4 and 9 years old, respectively, and help me put life in perspective every day and remember what’s most important to me - Family.

Sincerely,

Thank you all very much for a most enjoyable and successful two years in business. I look forward to continuing what I started in 2015 for years to come.

Roger Tumminieri, Publisher Etobicoke Lakeshore Press

Lastly, and most importantly, I would like to thank their Mommy; my wife, Jessica. She’s the ink in my pen, so to speak, and I’m truly

WHEN NOT KNOWING HURTS Did you know ostriches actually don’t bury their heads in the sand? When the birds are scared, they run as fast and as far as their scrawny legs can take them. The adage “burying your head in the sand” was recently debunked for me thanks to my myth-busting, animal-loving six-year-old daughter. I still believe there are plenty of ostriches roaming around Canada. Canadians are smart, kind, compassionate and inclusive people. We’re blessed with a beautiful country and an insatiable desire to learn about and welcome the world into our homes and hearts. Here’s where I get confused and start seeing ostrich “Run! Hide!” behaviour. How is it that the majority of Canadians are open-minded, open-hearted critical thinkers but not when life demands we deal with death? How is it we “put our heads in the sand” when someone we love dies? And why is it that so often price trumps dignity? Most people have zero interest in knowing the difference between direct cremation and funeral service, whether a traditional funeral or a celebration of life. If you’re thinking right now, “Well, Brad, one is a heck of a lot cheaper than the others!” your thinking is exactly my point. Rather than knowing and deciding if Gramma is to be picked up, washed and dressed at a funeral home, a lot of families, using the sole beacon of price, are often unknowingly sending Gramma to an industrial 12

plaza where the cremation company’s neighbours are auto-repair shops, offices and oil changes. If an industrial plaza sounds ugly, desolate and grey; it is. And the vibe is sad because there are bodies inside. Most people approach the technical aspects of a death (i.e., pickup, transport, disposition) by only talking about price because money is something they know. And when you know you feel empowered, in control and comforted. I understand. But when we don’t understand something, especially life-shaping events like dying, death and disposition, a powerful opportunity opens for us. We can make the decision to not bury our heads in the sand. We can be brave and we can learn. We can make informed and compassionate decisions that reflect who we

ETOBICOKE LAKESHORE PRESS

are and what we care about. Rather than acting like an ostrich, choose to ask questions of funeral professionals that force them to tell you the truth about what they’re doing, now and later. Encourage the funeral director or direct-cremation salesperson to describe exactly where it is Gramma is going. If you want to follow her there, you can. It’s your right and perhaps your final parting gift. When we accompany our loved ones right to the End, whether to a funeral home or

industrial-plaza crematorium, we are not just informed consumers. We are compassionate and courageous family members and friends willing to watch one of our flock rise, fly away and be free. Brad Jones is a father of six children and regularly organizes family road trips, especially around Father’s Day. Brad has been a funeral director for over 25 years and runs locally-owned, commission-free Ridley Funeral Home (3080 Lake Shore Blvd., across from Humber College) in Etobicoke. HEALTH & WELLNESS Summer is here and in full swing! If you’re going to be outdoors, make sure to protect your skin with the right sunscreen. Choose at least SPF 30, but always remember to reapply every 2 hours and after swimming. Higher SPF slows down how fast the sun can burn your skin, but all sunscreens will wear off, so without reapplication, you can still get burned.

BEAT THE HEAT WITH YOGA

I love the summer months, but the hot and fiery energy of the season can lead to overheating. You may have noticed, in yourself or others, that being too physically hot on the inside and out causes increased reactivity or volatility, tendencies towards frustration as well as shortfused irritability. All those ‘hot’ emotions can pop up when we’re too darn hot! That’s why it’s so important to stay cool, slow down, and chill out this summer. Taking a swim at the cottage and enjoying a light fresh diet with cooling foods like cucumber, mint, and coconut can certainly help. And so can yoga! Try this 3-pose sequence to Beat the Heat and stay cool this summer... 14

Supported Backbend Comfortably lie down on the floor with knees bents and feet on your mat. Lift your hips and gently place a yoga block or folded blanket under your hips. Soften your belly and deepen your breathing. Relax here for as long as you need to. Reclining Twist Remove the block or blanket and hug your leg to your chest as you continue to lie on the floor. Widen your arms to a ‘T’ then drop both legs off to one side to twist. Use props if the floor feels far away and allow your upper back to melt towards your mat.

Wide Leg Forward Fold Come to a seated position and widen legs like a ‘V’. Lengthen your spine by anchoring hands behind you. If it feels good to tip your chest forward, deepen your breathe and let gravity do the work. Marlene Sammy owns and operates Branch Yoga & Wellness in Long Branch and Fly Studio in Queen West.
