ANNIVERSARY TRIUS + AIM TURNS ONE!

Wow, what a year! One year ago, we followed our passions in food and entertainment and opened the doors to Trius + aiM; a bistro, events, and catering company inspired by our children, Demetrius and Mia. We were then blessed with a third baby, a daughter named Aimee, who completed our family.

As first-time entrepreneurs, the past year has not been an easy one, but definitely a rewarding one! We give our thanks and gratitude to the community that has embraced us, our food, our philosophy, our family and supported us over the year. We have had the pleasure of hosting many families and friends for brunch, lunch and dinner. We have hosted numerous events such as birthdays, baptisms, showers, an eco market, and a couples counselling seminar to name a few. We took part in the 2018 Etobicoke Lakeshore Santa Claus Parade with our famous jerked chicken meal and even had the pleasure of hosting the wedding of a lovely local Long Branch couple. We credit our success to the vibrant Etobicoke community we call home and to our staff who work tirelessly and passionately everyday to make our vision a reality. JOIN US THURSDAY, JULY 11 (7-10PM) TO CELEBRATE WITH A COMPLIMENTARY CHEF-INSPIRED MENU. RSVP REQUIRED. PUBLISHER’S NOTE SUMMERTIME IS HERE! I’d like to welcome our new Food & Drink editorial contributor, Jenny Shearman. She’s a Personal Chef and owner of My Sweet Beet and has outlined some tips to take the stress out of meal prep for those summer weekend trips out of the city. Finally, I’d like to congratulate our little guy, Luke, on turning one! He’s brought so much joy to our family and, as kids tend to do, has changed our perspective on life. You can read Luke’s Toddler Life article on page 25 to see what he has to say about this milestone. Thank you to my wife, Jessica, for all the amazing work she’s done to get us this far. We just bought new running shoes so we can keep up with Luke now that he’s about to start walking!

Speaking of sounds, have you heard the buzz?! It’s coming from the yard behind Moya Financial on Brown’s Line where two beehives have been installed to help pollinate our neighbourhood. We were lucky enough to be there to witness the installation and to capture the event as this month’s cover feature. It’ll bee a great read! Congratulations to Alderwood’s Trius + aiM who are celebrating their one year anniversary. If you haven’t eaten there yet, you’re invited to celebrate their first birthday on July 11 with a complimentary chef-inspired menu. See page 7 for RSVP details. Also in Alderwood, La Crema Cafe is garnering plenty of attention as a new tourist hot spot. Seems like word is getting out about their signature iced coffee. STONEHOOKER BREWING’S GRAND OPENING

Need some inspiration? If ever there was a “Follow Your Dream” story, this is it. Several months ago, I stopped in to meet the folks at Stonehooker Brewing Company. What I discovered was a work in progress, fuelled by a passion for brewing beer. As I got to know owner, Ross Noel, and Adam Cherry, Brewmaster and VP of Marketing, I became aware that their passion wasn’t just for brewing beer, it was to become a part of our community. Stonehooking was a trade unique to the north shore of Lake Ontario in the 19th century. The Stonehookers, many of whom were based in Port Credit, were instrumental figures in building local towns, Toronto included. They hooked stones from the Lake and shipped them off to be used at construction sites.

attended by local beer-lovers who soaked up the sun on the south side of Lakeshore Road East. The uniquely designed Tap Room was overflowing with both people and beer. It’s a sight to behold for any nautical enthusiast. If you like beer, then all the better. Noel, a self-proclaimed lover of beer, and Cherry, a once amateur beer brewer, are now living their dream. Cottage season is finally here! It’s a time for swimming, suntans, and sipping wine. But if you have a family, the serenity of a summer beach vacation can come to a screeching halt around meal time. Vacation meals are often challenging, particularly when traveling with kids.

ROYAL MEATS BAR/BEQUE 710 Kipling Ave / 416-251-1144 www.royalmeats.ca

My advice is to consider consolidating meal prep into one single shopping and cooking session before you leave, freeing up precious time for well-deserved R&R. Instead of being tempted to head to a restaurant, you’ll have delicious, healthy meals ready to heat in the oven or toss on the grill. In a perfect world, you could devote the entire day before leaving for vacation to preparing your meals. In reality, you’ve got to pack, wrap up work, and drop off the dog at the kennel, before heading out of town. If you want the time-saving, and financial benefits of meal prepping for vacation without actually having to do any meal prep, consider hiring a personal chef at My Sweet Beet. Our chefs create custom, gourmet, healthy meals that are neatly packaged, labeled, and ready to go, allowing you to focus on relaxing and spending quality time with your family.

MIMICO LISA ROSEN. ARTIST, ROVING ARTS Where does the name Roving Arts come from?

Roving is the name of the type of wool used for felting. It also means ‘to wander without purpose’, which is a concept I love. Spending a day wandering without purpose through a forest is my perfect day. What inspired you to start a business like this and, specifically, working with felt?

I left my teaching job after having kids to stay home with them. Since my youngest started school I have had a few part-time jobs, but nothing I felt particularly passionate about. I have always loved being creative and had taken a felting workshop a few years back. I’d been meaning to use my extra wool roving for ages and when I started seeing felt ball garlands around I thought I’d try making some felt balls myself. After making a few pieces of art with them, I figured I’d try my hand at a small online business. That was about 4 months ago, and here I am. It’s been really fun so far! Where can people purchase your art?

I have an Etsy shop which can be found at www.etsy.com/shop/rovingarts or they can search for Roving Arts. My work can also be seen on Instagram (@rovingarts) and I will announce any upcoming markets there. I am happy to do custom work and can be reached through Etsy or Instagram! What’s your favourite thing about living in Mimico?

I can’t pick only one, so firstly, I love being by the lake and secondly, the people here are so friendly and down to earth. To me it feels like living in a small town in the big city.

LONG BRANCH GOLDEN COTTAGES YEARS Decades before the relaxed, Long Branch summers era of the 1920’s to 1950’s, our village’s founding of 1884 typified its exclusively Protestant Victorian roots. There were no alcoholic drinks allowed.

By the mid-1900’s, Long Branch had electricity. One could arrive by land, motorcar, and Sunnyside - Port Credit Radial Tram. No need for the long travel to the Muskokas. All amenities, entertainment, sport courts, boating, fishing, swimming, fresh ‘catch of the day’ dining, and relaxation were within easy reach of the metropolis. In the 1910’s a significant demographic shift evolved when Colonel Fredrick B. Robins started marketing 50-foot healthy lots to the east of ‘The Villa Park’. To the west from 36th street, James Eastwood having lumbered most of his prime timber to Britain, sold off 50-foot lots in the 1920’s for cottages and permanent homes to be nestled along the ‘flats’ of Etobicoke Creek and the lagoon. The latter proved horrific with the ravages of Hurricane Hazel in 1954.

Thomas Wilkie (Toronto YMCA secretary) raised the vacation resort stakes to attract the gentry with a ‘250 Villa community’. The Long Branch Park and Resort was gated and guarded at STOP 23 (Long Branch Ave at Lake Shore) and had a 12-foot fence surrounded the resort. No bungalow cottages here. Two to three story ‘Villas’ designed by leading architects in the Jacobean, Victorian, and Queen Anne styles graced the streets cradling Long Branch Park, which boasted its own luxury Japanese Pagoda Hotel, waterslides, gymnasium, chapel, carousel, picnic and dancing pavilions. Many of the original Villas of Lake Promenade Visit “The Golden Cottages Years” today, now have Ontario Heritage Building Long Branch 135 Exhibit at the Humber designation. ALDERWOOD TOURISTS TARGET LA CREMA Since we spilled the beans about La Crema Cafe last month, tourists have been flocking to Alderwood to catch a glimpse of owner, Andrei Novakovskiy (left), and his unusually friendly and social customers. “I live at Bloor and Royal York and I come here twice a day,” explains Julia, a mom who had so many positive things to say about La Crema, we’d have to publish a separate magazine just to capture them in full. This photo was shot by a Japanese tourist who had arrived on a tour bus en route to Niagara Falls. She couldn’t believe her luck when Novakovskiy flashed her his signature smile - something he typically reserves only for the paparazzi.

A cultural attache has been dispatched from Novakovskiy’s home town of Kyiv to acquire the importation rights to his coveted recipe for iced coffee. COVER STORY MOYA FINANCIAL IS TAKING THOUS On June 7th, I had the pleasure to witness the installation of two beehives on the yard at Moya Financial’s Main Branch. This was a first for me. I can’t say that I’ve ever been so close to thousands of bees before. I was joined by my wife, Jessica, and our youngest son, Luke. A group of Moya employees gathered to watch the installation and learn about bees and their beehaviours (sorry, I couldn’t resist). Since I first learned of the pending beehive installation, I’ve been fascinated by the connection between bees and Slovenian culture. Beekeeping is one of the oldest human activities and is a prime part of the Slovenian identity. Moya Financial and its predecessors have served the Slovenian community in Ontario for over 60 years. As they continue to grow roots in South Etobicoke, Moya is open to all members of our community. Their venture into urban beekeeping is an opportunity to highlight the important role bees play in our environment, specifically our food supply, as well as to link the symbolic nature of bees to Moya Financial’s core values, namely hard word, trust, family, care for others, and community. Partnering with Alveole, a Canadian-based social beekeeping outfit, Moya Financial’s beehives are located in the yard just behind their Main Branch on Brown’s Line and were installed by beekeeper, Quentin Heffell. The bees come and go as they please, pollinating the surrounding area within a

5 km radius. In order to produce 1 kg of honey, they must travel the equivalent of 4 times around the earth. One beehive will house up to 50,000 bees. The hives will receive regular visits from beekeepers as they prepare for harvest at the end of the summer. By then, each hive will weigh close to 100 lbs. Moya Financial will share the honey with our community. You can actually follow the hives online. I know...cool, right?! The site shows the bees’ flying range, as well as their current activity based on the weather. Learn more about Moya’s beehives by dropping by their Main Branch. I’m sure they’d bee happy to see you!

ARTS & CULTURE THE STORY BEHIND THE MURAL

PHILIP COTE

Artist, Activist, Historian, and Traditional Wisdom Keeper If you drive up and down Thirtieth St, you’ll certainly have seen the evolution of what is no doubt one of the most inspiring and culturally significant street murals in Etobicoke, if not beyond. Depicted is a series of animals and aquatic life in full-colour, airbrushed detail, along with a secondary motif using solely black paint applied seemingly with brushes. The mural was brought to my attention a few months ago half-way into its production. “Have you seen the new mural on Thirtieth Street?” A James S. Bell parent asked me one afternoon at pick-up time. To which I replied, “No. What’s it like?” “It’s completely amazing, but I’m a bit confused by it,” he explained. “It seems like it’s two separate murals in one.” Curious to see what he was talking about, I took a drive up Thirtieth. I could tell pretty quickly that there were two different artists involved in creating this mural. At the beginning of June, I had the opportunity to speak with Philip Cote (pictured 18

above) while he was working on the mural gracing the Thirtieth St underpass. I introduced myself to Mr. Cote and apologized for interrupting his workflow. He was up on his ladder at the time adding detail to one of the black animal paintings. He was kind enough to speak with me, even pausing his work and climbing down his ladder to explain the mural project. “Initially, the mural had a Settler’s narrative,” Cote explained, referring to the colourful artwork done by his counterpart, Nick Sweetman. “I’ve added an Indigenous narrative to the mural.” In an effort to learn more about the story behind the mural, we approached Lakeshore Arts, a registered charitable, not-forprofit community organization located on Lake Shore Blvd West in New Toronto. “The power and impact of a mural becomes apparent and gains community support when the artists are able to interpret and reflect key themes of place,” explains Susan Nagy, Lakeshore Arts’ Executive Director.

“The Thirtieth Street mural joyously depicts the abundance of flora and fauna of the Lakeshore area grounded in respect for its indigenous presence. It is a visual statement of addressing the present, respecting what came before and acknowledging the importance of both.”

REAL ESTATE FINANCE A SECOND PROPERTY Now that the nice weather is here, do you sometimes find yourself imagining you’re at the cottage enjoying a little quiet time by the water? Well, the good news is that doesn’t just have to be a dream. Financing a cottage can be a pretty straight forward proposition and several lenders are prepared to work with you to finance your retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the city. In many cases the lenders would even be willing to provide competitive terms, all but the same as you might expect for your primary residence!

property in mind, you might be pleased to know that you could potentially make such a purchase with as little as 10% down! If the property is unable to meet those criteria, while you wouldn’t be able to put only 10% down, the good news is with 20% down the deal could still be done. So the next time you find your mind wandering to that special place away from it all, remember, it doesn’t just have to be a dream!

However, such financing is a little different from what most people would be used to when purchasing a home in the city. Specifically, there are two possible categories to consider when thinking of buying a cottage: 1. Is the structure a 4-season building? 2. Does the property have year-round road access?

INSPIRATION HOW TO DREAM

MATTHEW DOUGLAS Pastor

We all long for something greater; for ourselves to be better, to make an impact and a difference. There is no human who longs to be less. We long to be more. But we convince ourselves to protect against the pain of failure by giving up on our dreams. The sad part is that we only dream in our sleep and sleepwalk through our lives. An acronym for DREAM... D - Different Having a dream will make you different. You won’t be applauded or celebrated always. You will have something that gets you out of bed and gives you purpose. R - Resource A dream will reveal the resource inside of you. It will reveal the strength and resilience you have. There has never been an empty person sent to earth. God has put a deposit in everyone. We all have been resourced with an ability. E - Endurance We need to have an endurance. Character is formed in conflict. When things are against us, who we are and what is really in us are revealed.

A - Anticipation When you pursue a dream you need to have a compelling and clear picture of what you want to accomplish. If it is not compelling enough, then when it gets really hard you will give up. That sense of anticipation will pull you forward when everything seems to be pushing against you. M - Meaning You were built for a life of meaning. Your dreams will transform you. But the dreams you have are not for you. If your dreams are only for you and don’t include other people then they’re too small. Serve others and love others. That’s a meaningful DREAM! I believe that we are all wonderfully made and that we all began as a dream in the mind of God before our first breath. So it stands to reason that if we began as a dream before our first breath, shouldn’t we live out God’s dream for us before our last breath?

When you pursue a dream it will be the hardest thing you do. You will fail, you will have setbacks, you will have disappointed expectations. You will need endurance. 22

FAMILY LIFE MOM & BABY BOOTCAMP MiBody’s Mom & Baby Bootcamps use free weights, but if your Baby is having one of those days, feel free to incorporate him or her into your workout. In my case, Luke is... how do you say...fairly muscular (or, as my husband would say, robust). So, that means Mama’s feeling the burn! The Bootcamps are great for Moms of all fitness levels. For each exercise, Emma offers modification options to make them more or less challenging. The sessions are intense and exciting and seem to fly by quickly. There’s plenty of space for your little one to wander about and even interact with other babies. It’s a great atmosphere and Luke really enjoys going. Emma has also started a stroller-running group, which I’ll be joining this month. I’m looking forward to the added challenge of running with other Moms and keeping up with Emma.

JESSICA TUMMINIERI Wife of the Publisher

In the spirit of getting back into shape post-Baby, this month’s article will focus on my experience doing Mom & Baby Bootcamps at MiBody Health and Fitness.

If getting back into shape after Baby is on your list of things to do this summer, I’d highly recommend MiBody’s Mom & Baby Bootcamps. Have a wonderful summer and enjoy the extra time with your kids!

Co-owner, Emma Tunley, runs a tight ship. Her bootcamps are definitely challenging. Thankfully, her sister and business partner, Alison, is a Registered Massage Therapist. I’ve been keeping her very busy these days!

If you don’t know this about me yet, I’m a connoisseur of treats. This month, I persuaded Daddy to let me do a treat review for his magazine. I chose La Crema Cafe at the Shoppes of Alderwood. After sampling the brownies, the cowboy cookie, and the lemon squares, I set my sights on the mango tart. Wow, this thing is crazy good! I don’t have any other words. Just crazy good. It’s my new favourite!

Not much to write about this month...just the fact that I’m turning one! Thank you to my Mommy for carrying me and giving birth to me and for caring for me every day for a whole year. She’s the best! Thanks to Big Brother Jax for being a great role model. And thanks to my Daddy, too! I’m a very lucky Baby...I mean Toddler!!!

LIFE’S UNDERTAKINGS CELEBRATE LIFE how often we pray for permanent sunshine and no rain. On life’s dark days, and the death of a loved one is the darkest of all days, we still need to gather, commune, cry and celebrate. How we contorted the concept of a “celebration of life” to mean no crying, no reflection, no silence continually amazes me. I have watched devastated widows attempt to smile all the way through their husbands’ celebration of life because “he didn’t want me to be sad.” Never will I forget the country club “celebration of life” that hosted an open bar with a clear and distinct sign on the counter: No Tears Allowed. I’ve seen packs of young people huddled together, crying discreetly, comforting one another far from the festivities, because their tears were inappropriate at the party Who doesn’t love a good party? Gratitude, reflection, tenderness and strength are more easily accessed when served alongside stories and sandwiches. The person we are mourning privately, grieving publicly and celebrating whole-heartedly has become a member of the silent majority, just as we will. Hosting a funeral and attending a funeral take courage. But as the kids like to say: You got this. Remember the humble potato patch. We must dig deep to find treasure. As summer blossoms into Canada Day and other festivities, celebrate all this gorgeous sunshine. Life is meant to be enjoyed and celebrated. But when darkness falls and the life of a loved one transforms into shadow, remember to bring both your bright light and your dark sadness to the celebration. The people most wounded by grief will draw strength from knowing they are not alone as they carry the burden of heartbreak and the gratitude of loving so deeply.

WELLNESS TALK TO YOUR PHARMACIST Summer’s in full swing! If you’re going to be outdoors, make sure to protect your skin with the right sunscreen. Choose at least SPF 30, but always remember to reapply every 2 hours and after swimming. Higher SPF slows down how fast the sun can burn your skin, but all sunscreens will wear off. So, without reapplication, you can still get burnt! Come speak with our pharmacists or cosmeticians if you have any questions about choosing the right sunscreen. And make sure you sign up for your Digital Pharmacy account so you can spend less time worrying about your refills, and more time enjoying the season! www.shoppersdrugmart.ca/prescriptions

One complaint that I often hear is about the extra pounds gained during the summer months. Even if we are moving more, going outside more, using the car less, we still gain weight.

Get-togethers tend to transform into “let’s relax and have a drink” and that is when we allow ourselves to exceed what we should or intended to drink. We give ourselves permission because it is summer, it is once a week, or it is with dear friends we haven’t seen in the longest time. The excuses go on and on.

Here at the Pharmacy, we can help you walk through the summer while still enjoying it with moderation and without letting those extra calories affect your goals. 30

S H O R E & B R O W N ‘ S L I N E

Sugary and/or alcoholic drinks have lots of hidden (and useless!) calories. Usually those extra pounds come from the hidden calories in drinks. Together with watching what you eat, it is as important to pay attention to what and how much we drink.

Watching our alcohol and sugar intake from drinks is as important as watching our diet. The hidden and useless calories are more than we realize!
