WHAT’S NEW

Do you love Marie Curtis Park and want to help preserve it for others to enjoy? You may be interested in joining a new group that has formed to maintain the natural character and heritage of the park. It began as a group of dog owners/walkers who took it upon themselves to clean up after those who, unfortunately, neglected to do so even with all the garbage and recycling bins 6

located throughout the park. “We love to see people enjoying the park,” explains a local dog-walker. “But they have to clean up after themselves. It’s a simple matter of respect.” The group is open to anyone who has an interest in park stewardship. For information, email: marie.curtis.park@gmail.com

Easy to eat healthy at Pita Pit in Long Branch

Spotting an opportunity in an area that is rejuvenating, Jenny and Ryan Jones decided to open their Pita Pit location directly in the heart of Long Branch. “We’re happy to be a part of the future of this community,” explains Ryan. The couple prides themselves on being able to provide a healthy option for fast food in the area. “We work closely with schools in the neighbourhood to provide healthy lunches for kids,” they exp-

plain. “We’re also going to be hosting charity car washes this summer in our parking lot to raise funds for the Children’s Wish Foundation.” Jenny and Ryan will be donating 10% of sales from their recent grand opening party and upcoming car washes to raise funds for a local family through the Foundation. --3560 Lake Shore Blvd W, unit 4 416.251.7482 / pitapit.com (beside The Beer Store)

THE GIFT OF RELAXATION

I remember my Dad, crawling around on the floor, chasing my sister and me when I was a little girl. He would pick us up and spin us around, throw and catch us, and indulge us when we laughed and shouted, “Again, again! Between playing catch in the backyard, basketball on the driveway and foot races on the sidewalk, we kept him on his toes. For the hardworking fathers, teachers and men in your life consider giving the gift of relaxation. 18

Thai Yoga Massage is a deeply relaxing practice that provides passive yoga stretches and massage techniques to relieve tension, lengthen muscles, and increase joint mobility. Thai Yoga Massage differs from regular Swedish massage in that you remain clothed (something light and stretchy is recommended), there are no oils used, and the treatment is conducted on a large mat on the floor rather than a table. Invite Dad to relax deeply and im-

prove flexibility with a massage combined with assisted yogic stretches. In this treatment, yoga is ‘done for you’ so the father in your life can kick up his feet and feel great. I’m so lucky that my Dad, now a grandfather of three, is the same playful, active presence I remember him to be. Branch Yoga not only offers group and private yoga classes, but also sessions in the age-old practice of

Thai Massage. For yoga, massage, or men’s facial gift certificates please contact us by email at yoga@branchyoga.com. Marlene Sammy is co-owner of Branch Yoga & Wellness. ---

CLOCK’S TICKING

By: Jonathan Nhan, RPh, CDE Men are notorious for not getting regular check-ups. We wait until the last possible minute before speaking with a medical professional. Why wait? The clock is ticking. We really owe it to ourselves and our loved ones to see a medical professional regularly. Even something as simple as checking your blood pressure is a step in the right direction.

GARDENING TIPS

By: Josie Corallo

PLANT IN THE RIGHT SPOTS Not all plants are created equally. Some, like tomatoes, thrive in the sunshine. Others grow best in shady areas. Know where the sun hits your garden and plant accordingly. TALK TO YOUR PLANTS It sounds funny, but it works. It strengthens your connection with the plants and makes some of the hard work easier and more fun. MAKE IT A FAMILY AFFAIR If you have kids or grandchildren, give them little jobs to do so they feel like a part of the process and will gain the same satisfaction as you when you reap your harvest. Q&A WITH GORDON PRIOR

By: Janey Buzugbe

ELP: What inspired you to start your business?

busy time all year long, so I come to work for peace.

GP: I started making eyeglasses in 1959, I was 16 years old and the company I started working for trained and educated me. I came to Long Branch in 1962 and got my Optician’s license in 1967. Business was good and steady. It’s so hard to say but in 1995, the company I worked for went under and I had bought a franchise in the store. I paid off the receivers and took possession. It’s been Long Branch Optical Inc. ever since then.

ELP: What’s the one thing people should know about your shop?

ELP: I hear you are a family man. How many kids and grandkids do you have? GP: Yes I am! I have 8 children. My fourteenth grandchild is on its way. I have five boys and three girls. It’s a whole team. I love that they are all around here in Ontario. It’s a 24

GP: It’s about the health of your eyes. You want to be able to have good eyesight as you age. You should get your eyes checked every 2 to 3 years. The pressure should be tested for glaucoma, the macula should be examined and photographed to see how it is progressing. There are a lot of eye diseases out there, even more prevalent now than they ever have been. So, frequent healthcare for your eyes and, of course, regular maintenance on your glasses every month because screws do come loose.
