way, a nation of immigrants. My parents came here from Italy. My wife’s parents are from Scotland and Hungary. Our neighbours are from Trinidad, Ukraine, and Ireland. All of whom came to Canada for the hope of a better life. As we celebrate our nation’s 150th birthday, let’s reflect on how fortunate we actually are to live in Canada and be Canadian. We should all be extremely proud to be Canadian. We’re lucky to live in such an inclusive, forwardthinking nation that empowers its citizens to be themselves, pursue opportunity, and build a life for their families. As Canadians, however, I think it’s fair to say that we may at times take for granted the advantages afforded to us. We find ourselves complaining about things such as high taxes, the cost of hydro, and long wait times at hospitals. Let’s put things in perspective for a moment, though. We enjoy one of the highest standards of living in the world and Canada is a beacon for hope to all those who seek freedom and safety. Despite your views on immigration, Canada is, in every

NEIGHBOURHOOD NEWS L O N G B R A N C H

High water levels along the waterfront are a continued concern as rainfall and high winds persist. The beaches at Marie Curtis Park have been covered with debris, including a Long Branch resident’s deck that once overlooked the lake. City clean-up crews are on the scene and trying their best to manage the mess, but the weather

has been uncooperative. As a result, the Etobicoke Creek has flooded its eastern bank. Ponds have appeared in some of the low lying areas of the park and are now populated by ducks and other waterfowl. On a good day, waves all but cover the pier and caution should be used especially for children and pets.

Golf season is in full swing, pardon the pun, and we’re lucky to have our very own pro shop in The Kingsway at Bloor and Royal York. The Golf Gallery has been a destination for golf equipment and related items for 25 years. Its boutique feel makes it a comfortable place to ask questions and get the kind of personalized service you might not otherwise receive from big box stores. They offer starter sets for kids if you’d like to test the waters without breaking the bank. They include a bag, driver, iron, and a putter. The Golf Gallery also sells new and used clubs for men and women, along with collectible items that make for great gifts for your favourite golf enthusiast.

On June 3rd, Connaught Masonic Hall in Mimico opened its doors to the community to celebrate 300 years of modern Freemasonry, which is the oldest and largest fraternal organization in the world. In the spirit of CANADA 150, Freemasons were integral in the founding of our nation. In fact, Sir John A. MacDonald was a Mason.

HEALTH & WELLNESS I’m the opposite of a shoe-aholic. I avoid wearing shoes as much as humanly possible. I love the freedom of wiggling my toes and feeling the ground beneath my feet. When the seasons change to warmer months and the grass is green and sun is out, I make a point to connect my bare feet to the Earth itself. This practice is called Earthing and boasts surprising benefits. When we make direct contact with the surface of the Earth our bodies receive a charge of energy that makes us feel good, fast. Just as the sun gives us warmth and vitamin D, the Earth revitalizes depleted energy and promotes physical wellbeing. Unfortunately, urban dwelling doesn’t always provide Earthing opportunities.

Between shoe culture, cement paved paths and our temperate Canadian climate, it’s easy to go months (if not years!) without feeling the Earth beneath our feet. As we celebrate CANADA 150, let’s honour the true north by kicking off our shoes and getting a little grassy. STOP, DROP & YOGA 60-Second Practice Kick off your socks and shoes and balance on one foot in Tree Pose. Feel your sole on the Earth and listen to the sounds of life around you. Soften your jaw and deepen your breath. Let your awareness heighten as you rejuvenate with the Earth’s gentle energy. HOW TO NAVIGATE THE UNDERWORLD One of the most colourful insults I’ve ever had hurled at me was being called a “well-dressed pirate.” As someone who’s worked in funeral service for over 25 years, I have a pretty thick skin but name-calling and stereotypes still hurt. Yes, there are scoundrels out there. Yes, I know some of them by name. Yes, I believe they prey on families and are motivated by greed. And yes, I’d love to see them go out of business and stop giving my life’s calling a bad name. The majority of small, familyowned funeral homes in Canada boycott a commission-based business model. Those scoundrels you see in the news? They’re not licensed funeral directors; they’re professional salespeople. The bad apples out there really are well-dressed pirates who pillage a family’s sense of safety, dignity and grace. As in life, speaking truth to power takes courage. Here are three tips when making plans about your life and legacy. Pre-planning Tip #1: Are you in sales or service? In 2014 the provincial government granted cemetery visitation centres the right to present themselves as full-service funeral homes. Today, families unknowingly meet with quota-driven salespeople rather than commission-free funeral directors. You have every right to 14

ask the person you’re potentially investing your time, memories and money with if they’re in funeral sales or funeral service. Pre-planning Tip #2: Show me, don’t tell me. “Everything was supposed to be included!” is a sad, frequent cry from grieving families facing unexpected funeral fees. Whether you’re in front of a salesperson or a funeral director, both are legally obligated to show you an itemized list of services and charges. If you sign papers, make sure you’ve read those papers and understand what you’re investing in. A flippant “Everything is included” accompanied by a push to sign on the dotted line is unprofessional, impolite and unethical. If you’re not being educated in a kind, patient way, choose this option: walk out.

facebook.com/fiatluxmedia

Pre-planning Tip #3: These boots were meant for walkin’. We are emotional creatures who make emotional decisions. When we take empowered action, especially about life-death choices that feel uncomfortable, expensive, or dependent on someone else’s expertise, it’s because we trust the person who’s helping us. If you don’t connect with (like or enjoy) the person pre-planning your arrangement, leave. Walk out.

Honour your feelings and find a funeral home with funeral people where you feel comfortable, relaxed and respected. Brad Jones is a father of six children and regularly organizes family road trips, especially around Father’s Day. Brad has been a funeral director for over 25 years and runs locally-owned, commission-free Ridley Funeral Home (3080 Lake Shore Blvd., across from Humber College) in Etobicoke. He can be reached at 416.259.3705 or BradJones@RidleyFuneralHome.com
