PUBLISHER’S NOTE FOUR YEARS AND COUNTING Speaking of old and blocks, you may have noticed that I updated my photo. I figured it was time to show off the extra white in my beard. We shot this on Lake Shore, outside T.J. O’Shea’s Irish Snug. One might argue this block is one of the hubs of Long Branch. I always want to make this magazine better. I find myself tinkering with the design month after month to try to deliver the best looking product I can to our loyal readers. In the spirit of continuous improvement, I’ve re-modelled the magazine to include a new cover design, I’ve added additional editorial categories that I hope will resonate well with our readership, as well as content specific to the unique neighbourhoods that make up South Etobicoke.

ROGER TUMMINIERI

Publisher & Long Branch Resident

I started the Etobicoke Lakeshore Press in the summer of 2015 as a way to promote businesses in Long Branch. Since then, the magazine has branched out to support local businesses, community events and organizations across South Etobicoke and Port Credit.

My goal has always been to shine a light on the people who make our community a great place to live, work, and raise a family. To that extent, it’s a priviledge to feature Colby Kriegl on this month’s cover. He lives in Long Branch and is the owner of the best, little Irish Pub in the neighbourhood; T.J. O’Shea’s Irish Snug.

It’s now mailed to every house in Long Branch with Canada Post - a far cry from its initial 1,000 copy print run meant to test the waters to see if an old-school print mag would fly in the age of social media. I keep hearing from people in the neighbourhood that they like to read, not flip through their phones for the next quick fix of news, be it real or fake. I’m encouraged by their comments that they enjoy reading the articles we publish here and are compelled to visit the local businesses about which we write. Thank you to those who love the format of the magazine. I always think it’s cool to hear how people interact with the magazine. Some grab it from their local cafe and stick it right in their purse without reading a word, waiting until they get home to flip through its pages. I even get the odd call for back issues to complete a reader’s collection. And now people seem to really enjoy reading articles written by our two sons, Jaxon and Luke. Chips off the old block, eh?! 8

If you’re reading this and you haven’t met Colby, I’d encourage you to stop by his pub one afternoon (they open at 3pm ever day). No matter what’s going on in his life or in the lives of those around him, Colby always has a big smile on his face. He’s about as genuine as they come. Yes, he buys ads from me, but he didn’t pay me to write this. So, if you could use a smile and some good conversation, and maybe a burger and a pint, you know where to go! Thank you for being such great supporters of this publication by patronizing the local businesses featured in its pages. Thank you for reading and on behalf of my wife and children, thank you for a wonderful first four years in business!

La Crema Cafe

Alderwood’s Hidden Gem

These days, people seem to be completely immersed in their phones. No talking. No eye contact. No real social engagement. Unless you’re at La Crema Cafe. The friendly vibe of this hidden gem tucked away a few doors down from the Farm Boy in the Shoppes of Alderwood Plaza sets it apart from the big-name coffee shops. Anthropologists from across the world are descending upon La Crema Cafe to study

the habits of its patrons who can be spotted reading printed publications and even, if you’re really lucky, speaking to one another. The scientific community has not witnessed this level of human interaction since, well... before the internet. “I’m amazed!” Exclaims cafe owner, Andrei Novakovskiy. LA CREMA CAFE

CBD vs. THC. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? The folks at Cloud Heads are helping to shed some light on the differences between CBD and THC. In short, CBD refers to the non-intoxicating compound called cannabidiol. Traditionally, cannabis consumers have valued higher concentrations of THC as a way to increase potency. Now, we have a better understanding of cannabinoids to the extent that high-CBD strains can be used as a substitute for the more intense, euphoric ‘high’ associated with high-THC strains. High-CBD strains deliver more functional effects favoured by consumers who are sensitive to side effects typically resulting from high-THC strains, namely anxiety, dizziness, and paranoia. High-CBD strains are good choices for individuals who manage pain throughout the day or who are looking to treat inflammation, anxiety, or other conditions. There are a variety of CBD products available at Cloud Heads to help people and pets. It’s recommended you go in person to speak with staff about what’s best for you.

ANTHRODESK’S MICHAEL JORDAN M I M I C O

How long have you lived in Mimico and when did you open your business?

My wife and I first moved to Mimico in 2006. We loved the area so much we stayed in the area and moved to our current house in 2010 before starting a family. AnthroDesk was started in 2014. Initially, we sold online and then had an office in Mississauga. Wanting to have space closer to home we opened our office showroom here in New Toronto in 2017. Can you tell us a little about AnthroDesk?

AnthroDesk is the leading Canadian standing desk brand. We sell sit-to-stand desks, converters and modern office gear to Canada and the U.S. Our local New Toronto office employs several people, including a lot of Humber Lakeshore students. We’re still in growth mode and life is busy, but I’m proud of how committed and passionate our team is about the benefits of standing while working. The fact that we are a Canadian based company, have one of the best warranties in the industry, and our commitment to customer service is what sets us apart. What inspired you to start such a unique business?

I’ve always had an interest in e-commerce and a desire to start my own business. After spending several years sitting at a desk at the office and at home and experiencing back pain and discomfort, I decided to order a standing desk for my home office. I quickly discovered that there were very few Canadian sources that made quality products, and those that did were grossly overpriced. I started working with designers to develop and manufacturer a product that would work for me and others, and the rest is history! COVER STORY COLBY KRIEGL KICKS OFF SUMMER I couldn’t think of a better person to feature for our Kick-Off to Summer edition than Colby Kriegl, owner of T.J. O’Shea’s Irish Snug. A Long Branch resident and one of the nicest guys in the neighbourhood, Kriegl offers some insights into his pub, its patrons, and his passion for our community. By now, our readers know that T.J. O’Shea’s is a great local pub, but can you tell us something that very few people know about O’Shea’s? O’Shea’s has easily become a home away from home for a lot of people. That comfortable, safe place where you are always welcome. If it’s your first time and don’t know any of the regulars, that’s okay. You’ll soon be one. Just the other day, I found myself watching one of our good friends and loyal customer, Tracey, leave her group of girl friends and approach a young man who just recently started coming to the pub. She introduced herself and told him not to be shy; everyone is very welcoming and if he wants to join their group for conversation he is more than welcome. Turns out he’s just moved from the East Coast and doesn’t really know anyone from here. That’s what I love so much about this bar. It doesn’t matter how old you are or what you do for a living. When you come through those doors, you’re home. It’s been amazing over the last five years seeing all the friendships that have developed here at O’Shea’s. I think a customer said it best one night: “It feels like I’m having dinner at my Mom’s with all my siblings and family right now.” The camaraderie is what makes this place what it is. It really doesn’t matter if you come in on a Monday night or a Friday night, there’s always good conversation and the place is full of laughter. So as not to brag about yourself, we’ll ask Meagan Larman to answer this one: What should people know about Colby and how he contributes to our local community? Colby is one of the most genuine people I have ever had the pleasure to get to know and work for. He cares deeply about the 16

people around him and that is not only shown in his personal life but in his business as well. I’ve never seen a business owner so driven by the happiness of his clientele. He connects with people in ways others wish they could. He is always looking to give back to the community. Even this past year, with a renovation that feels like it has been going on forever with so many unforeseen costs, he still made it a priority to sponsor local sports teams. His heart is huge and the neighbourhood benefits from a small business owner like Colby. What’s new at O’Shea’s for the summer? So many new things coming! Our new patio is going to be magical. We will be the only pub on the Lakeshore with a quiet hidden patio out back. Sun all day with beautiful flowers and herb garden. New wine, cocktail, and food menus coming soon!

INSPIRATION HUSBANDS, LOVE YOUR WIVES.

MATTHEW DOUGLAS Pastor

The unique thing about humanity is that we are builders and the greatest building material we have is love. Will people look back on your life and say, “That was a life built by love!” The truth is we often build our lives out of other materials like fear, pride, greed, expectations of others, etc. But today, you can make a decision to build a life out of love. A life built out of love is the most resilient, inspiring and powerful life we can live. The result of building a life out of love is your relationships. If it is love you build with then you are going to build up others in love. When a person is built up in love they are going to become confident, supportive, contributing, and loving people. Don’t you want to be surrounded by people like that? Take responsibility and know that we are surrounded by what we create around us. There is this verse in the Bible that makes a lot of people cringe and I understand why. It talks about women submitting to their husbands. People have taken advantage of that verse and made their wives into servants and that is revolting. But if you continue reading it says, “…husbands love your wives.” When you love someone we intuitively know that love does not make other people servants for you, but it makes you a servant for others.

There should be an impact on the world around you when you decide to join together. That impact is building one another up with love and then building the world around you with love. The question is, what kind of world will your love create? Your mission should make your partner more, not less. It should cause them to become the person they always longed to be because love makes everything greater. Love creates life and we are most fully alive when we are fully loved. So husbands, love your wives. Live in such a way that the world will look at your life and marriage and say, “Love built that!”

So all of these thoughts lead to this belief: our marriages should have a mission. 18

HOME & LIFESTYLE FINANCING YOUR RENO From a financing perspective, there are typically two kinds of home renos: little and big. Little renos typically don’t involve altering the structure of the home but rather more minor adjustments such as adding a new kitchen or bathroom. Typically, the best way to fund this kind of renovation is through short term debt such as a line of credit. Once the project is complete, it then makes sense to add the short-term debt to the mortgage by way of a refinance. Remember, while lines of credit are great for short-term financing needs like emergencies, they are fundamentally more expensive than most types of mortgages (even secured lines) and therefore short-term debt is inherently inferior over the long term. A big reno often involves you knocking down exterior walls or pulling the roof off, up to and including a complete rebuild of the home. This can create an issue with your financing as lenders are often hesitant to make loans against a house with no roof.

The proper tool for this job is a construction loan. Although most banks make construction financing more complicated than it needs to be, the good news is there are reputable firms that can handle this type of loan. Then, when the project is complete you can seek more conventional financing through a more conventional lender. Financing can be confusing. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me.

HOME & LIFESTYLE IT’S PLANNING SEASON!

“50% of the Project

is in the Planning.”

GORDON J. DEANE

Residential Construction Expert Owner, Deane design + build inc. 8 Rosewood Ave, Port Credit www.deane.ca buildit@deane.ca 416-989-4270

I have always been excited by the mysteries of what the summer construction season in the GTA will bring. Property owners and builders prepare many months in advance for the warmer season and longer work days that come along as a benefit to be more productive. February and March is the start of our summer push, through to the end of June. July is our contingency month. August is our maintenance month. During August, families and trades alike take holidays (at least the older, more experienced trades who have come to realize the importance of harvest). If you are going through a new home build or a substantial renovation like an open concept kitchen or bathroom, when possible take advantage and plan to enjoy the results of your construction experience. Summer is a great time to enjoy your construction experience completed.

Photo location West Edge Church This year, spring 2019 was a bustle of construction activity. It seems like around every bend, on every street, there is a construction adventure going on. Especially in Long Branch! A lot of this construction is seasonal and is based on a first-come, first-served system. Consider the planning that went on to prepare the start and finish of these projects in your neighbourhood. Discuss your project with a builder like myself so that the timing of your project works for your family. Remember, summer is the most opportune time of the year to start planning your renovation project if you haven’t already. I can help with your plans and work with you to make your dream of an extra bathroom, bigger kitchen, second-level addition, or an open-concept first floor renovation a reality.

We are currently preparing for the next fourmonth push which starts in September and October, ending construction momentum in December for Christmas and New Years. Summer is a wonderful time for the creative process, designing and submitting plans to your building department. It’s planning season!

If you have a backyard, good climate yearround (HA!), and love to entertain… why not add the ultimate spot to your home? An easy-going but festive area is precisely what an outdoor room is – an outdoor-extension of your home where you can let loose. Your friends and family will want to spend time out there – even in inclement weather. First Thing’s First: Theme Will it be a Poolside Paradise or Game Day spot? Perhaps a Secret Garden or a simple utilization of great backyard space. Plan for landscaping or foundation needs. This may mean building a deck, levelling your backyard, or erecting a gazebo. If you have the space, skill, and resources, they make great options for accentuating dining areas or creating cool, shady spots. For a more budget-friendly option, try a large cantilever umbrella. Other great additives are flower beds and stone pathways. It really can be that simple to transform your yard.

The Fun Part: Furniture Furniture Shopping is a day of trying out cushions and choosing decorative pillows; imagining friends and family huddled together complimenting your eye for design, and finding the perfect chair for reading or comfy sofa to nap on. What’s your focal point? It could be a traditional outdoor brick firepit for warmth, a concrete modern fire table that’s great for entertaining and conventional use, or a simple deep-seated sofa set. Into outdoor cooking? An outdoor kitchen or barbecuing area should typically be away from overhanging trees and they almost always look great raised on a patio or deck. Also consider a built-in option for your grill. The added counter space, drawers, and cupboards will create a fuller look. Style with outdoor-friendly pillows or rugs. Great fabrics that are made to withstand the elements are Sunbrella and acrylic. Other useful accents for the ultimate entertainer are patio heaters (the all-nighters will thank you) and stand-up plants for that outdoor “paradise” feeling. Not only are you creating a stylish and relaxing outdoor room; your oasis dreams are going to add major value to your property. BARBECUES GALORE

HOME & LIFESTYLE PROTECT THE HOUSE! While the sun shines and the birds sing, most homeowners focus their attention on their yards, sheds, outdoor furniture, decks and barbecues. We are sure you will find plenty of advice on these topics all over the internet, which is why we focused on several surprising items that will help protect the inside of you home, this summer.

trol. Running your air conditioner is important for helping keep humidity low.

Window and Door Seals

Our passion is to help you feel more comfortable in your own home, so don’t be shy to contact us with questions and to book an assessment.

Heavy rains ushered in the full force of the spring season. To protect your house from leaks, it’s important to check the seals of the windows and doors of your home. A thorough inspection on the outside of your house should include checking the caulking around the doors and window frame for deterioration. Worn seals can allow significant amounts of moisture to enter your house. In many cases water can seep as far as the subfloor, causing permanent water damage. If left unchecked, you can end up with warped, squeaky or mouldy floors, or all three! Resealing your windows and doors should be a priority.

A dehumidifier is another option for those who don’t have an AC in their house. A dehumidified is specifically designed to wick away humidity from the air, keeping your house dry on humid days.

Water Fixtures and Pipes

Over the course of the winter sustained periods of cold weather can freeze your pipes. If this causes a pipe to burst, you’d usually know. However, if there is no obvious damage to your plumbing, we still recommend going through your house, especially the basement, to inspect your walls, floors and ceilings for any potential wet patches. These may be signs of slow leaks in your pipes.

Controlling Humidity

While the humidifier was necessary in the winter, too much humidity in the warm seasons is damaging to wood floors. Excessive humidity can case expansion and warping to the floor and subfloor. It’s normal to have a little bit of expansion in the wood, but too much can permanently loosen the fasteners in the floor, causing squeaking. Humidity can also encourage mold to grow in the internal layers of the floor. Your home’s air conditioner naturally removes moisture from the air, which is going to help keep excessive humidity under con-

FAMILY LIFE SUMMER WITH THE KIDS Who am I kidding?! Summer with two boys, one of whom is about to start walking, the other is well on his way to becoming a very successful litigator will be a breeze, right? My husband jokes that he goes to work to relax. Hmm...I’ll just say Happy Father’s Day again. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. I just think it’s funny watching him with both Jax and Luke for 3 minutes while I shower, do my hair and makeup and get dressed. Yep, that’s how us Moms roll. We can do a lot in the time it takes our husbands to think of a response to the question: Do you want to talk about our relationship?

JESSICA TUMMINIERI

Local Mom & Wife of the Publisher

Full disclosure: my husband made me write this... But seriously, I’d like to use this month’s Family Life submission as an opportunity to say Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads out there, including my husband. They say it takes two to tango. That couldn’t be more true about parenting. Love you, honey! As we shift into summer, I’m looking forward to school being out and spending some quality time with our boys. Thankfully our children listen to every word my husband and I say and do everything we ask them to do without hesitation or questions. And...I just woke up.

Now where was I? Oh, yeah. Summer with the kids. Good thing we’ve got the beach and the park so close to home. What a lovely way to spend the summer. I know Jax is looking forward to days at the splash pad and playground in Marie Curtis and Luke seems to love the taste of the wood chips there. Here’s to another school year under our belts. Wishing you all a very happy start to your summer.

KID LIFE WORKING

JAXON, 6 YEARS OLD

Kid Life Editor, All Around Good Kid

I got to be a Production Assistant at this month’s cover shoot at T.J. O’Shea’s. It was so cool. I got to meet Colby and Meagan and pick the backdrops for some of the pictures. A nice man at the bar even gave me some life advice: “Study hard, listen to your parents, and pray to God all the time.” The best part was that I got to eat the food after Igor was done taking photos of all the dishes. “Igor, are you done yet?!” My favourite was the bacon cheeseburger. It was so much fun being a Production Assistant!

BABY LIFE SUPA FAST

LUKE, 10 MONTHS OLD

Baby Life Editor, Champion Crawler

You should see how quickly I can crawl now. When I see my Mommy, I switch into high gear and motor over to her. I’m “Supa Fast!” I’m thinking of starting some baby races in the park this summer. Any takers? Once I learn to walk...watch out! My big brother is going to teach me how to tackle so I can play rugby with him. But for now, I’ll stick to crawling and putting random items in my mouth.

HISTORY TREE AMIGOS OF LONG BRANCH Mention the Three Tenors or The Three Musketeers and one immediately is forecast with visual imagery to a fine degree. But mention the Tree Amigo’s of Long Branch and questions abound. And yet these stately three have already been acclaimed with provincial heritage status and have become celebrities of sorts in the Toronto Star. CityTV, CBC and media here in Etobicoke. Combined, the Tree Amigos have the growing and harsh climatic survival experience of well over 600 years.

ever since. BIG RED, a 200-year-old Red Oak, instantly received fame and affection with print, radio, and TV coverage during its heritage tree designation last spring.

Still puzzled? How about the fact that these three guys work extremely hard every day producing fresh oxygen and filtering out the dirty carbon dioxide air for 20 people?!

If size matters, TITAN, a 275-year-old Red Oak (and still growing), is no contest.

STOP 26, at 42 Ash Crescent, was recently featured in the Star’s Tree of the Week column by Megan Ogilvie. A beautiful Silver Maple, STOP 26 is at the former location of Colonel Fredrick B. Robins’ gates to The Pines of 1910 at Lake Shore Blvd. STOP 26 was the Mimico - Port Credit tram stop #26.

And so it is with ecological pleasure that I introduce you to: BIG RED, STOP 26 and the largest in South West Toronto, TITAN, and all with Ontario Forestry Heritage Tree status.

On Saturday, June 22, you can visit ALL of the Tree Amigos with FREE admission to the Long Branch Garden Tour. Plus, you are invited to bring your drum, pow-pow, or bongo to TITAN’s drum circle celebration hosted by painter and songwriter, Pat Rice. Location: 15 Thirty Sixth St.

BIG RED was Long Branch’s first Heritage Tree at Park Blvd and Long Branch Ave. It escaped the great Long Branch Hotel fire of 1958 and has been a majestic beacon in living tribute to the Long Branch Cenotaph

You can’t beat that for fun! ... Bill Zufelt is a Long Branch resident and Chair of the History & Culture Committee Long Branch Neighbourhood Association

LIFE’S UNDERTAKINGS TAKE A WALK... ing “real conversations” with his son. No interruptions. No “turn off your phone” directives. No other obligations, plans or priorities. This charming and inspiring father-and-son team embarked on some serious bonding time that will forever enrich their relationship to one another and themselves. Sadly, not all families who set out on a journey are undertaking a happy or joyful voyage. Yes, there are the true superheroes like Terry Fox – running more than 5,300 kilometres through six provinces over 143 days – who blended catastrophe, cancer, courage and compassion into every single step of his Marathon of Hope.

Later when the travelling duo were interviewed, Emerson said one of his favourite parts of the journey was spotting the cute furry rodents scurrying around farmers’ fields.

There’s even better news for the broken-hearted. Enjoying the outdoors, whether in a natural setting or an urban one, with like-minded people is the best kind of medicine for people grieving. Acting like John Wayne when you’re in the wilderness of sorrow stunts healing. Research has shown that people who’ve suffered a recent stressful event (obviously the death of a loved one ranks high on the list of Life’s Manure Moments) receive the greatest mental boost from a group nature outing. I consider the growing popularity of group “grief walks” a type of movement as medicine that offers healing benefits, rain or shine. Across Canada, more and more grieving people are gathering in small groups so they can walk for 60 to 90 minutes in nature, guided, with others who are walking a shared path. Grief walks are not counselling sessions but a safe (and usually free) refuge within a culture that’s unapologetically grief-avoidant.

W E S T

With so many headlines screaming that Toronto is “The Lonely City” filled with lonely people, grief walks are a testament to our natural need to grieve loss, gather together for strength and take comfort in the natural beauty that surrounds us.

Summer is with us! And with brighter, warmer and longer days most of us feel energized and motivated to start taking our workouts outside. If working out is part of your routine, choosing to bring it outside is proven to boost your mood and increase stamina. If you are in search of a workout routine, this is the perfect time to start and keep it up. There is no best time to exercise - choose the time that is good for you and find a routine that you are able to maintain over time. If your work/family life allows, early morning is preferred by many people. For people who work long hours, going for a walk, jog or tennis game in the evening may work best. Most importantly, bring your exercise outdoors for a dose of sunshine (and a dose of Vitamin D!), a dose of fresh air, and a boost in mood and motivation that will help you keep it up as part of your daily routine.
