Sandy Pretty, co-owner of MyOlive

MyOlive

Show your pantry some love and elevate your cooking to new levels with premium olive oils and balsamic vinegars from MyOlive. At first glance, one might feel overwhelmed by the variety of tasting options. Not to worry, though. Owners, Sandy Pretty and Robert Pineau, will help guide you toward the best picks based on your palate and what you love to eat. “Much like wine, olive oils all have a distinct flavour,” explains Pineau. “We can tell you everything you need to know about your olive oil.” Factors like the type of olive, country of origin, producer, and crush date are important contributors to the quality of olive oils. Polyphenol concentration is another consideration. The higher the concentration, the more intense the flavour. 10

When you purchase olive oil you should never buy it without knowing when it was crushed, the actual olives used and the Polyphenol count. MyOlive will provide you with all those details and many more so you know you are getting the best olive oil possible. “It’s a premium product, so a little will go a long way,” assures Pretty of their olive oil. “It elevates the taste of everything we make.” Starting at $15 for a 200mL bottle, MyOlive offers a little something for everyone, especially those with the most discerning of tastes. ---

KINGSWAY FISH & CHIPS

#LiveLocal

It’s all about family, tradition, and quality at Kingsway Fish & Chips. You know you’re running a tight ship when the majority of your patrons are repeat customers. Many have even grown up eating at this neighbourhood favourite. “We have a huge regular following,” explains Rachel Bartel, co-owner of Kingsway Fish & Chips. “We have a lot of customers who grew up eating here. They have families of their own now and bring their children to eat here, too. It’s a tradition.” Noting that kids eat free on Tuesdays, Bartel jokes: “We like to get them hooked when they’re young.” Family-owned since 1958, Kingsway Fish & Chips caters to all facets of the local community. Speaking about The Kingsway, Bartel describes it as “One of the best neighbourhoods in Toronto. It’s very community-oriented here and everyone knows everyone.” Keeping quality in mind, Rachel’s husband, Gord, fillets the fish himself. An old-school approach considering most restaurants buy pre-cut fillets. Their potatoes are chipped in house, as well. On Good Friday, all hands are on deck to serve the thousands of customers who line the streets to get their hands on this classic comfort food. 30 YEARS OF GREAT LAKES BREWERY Peter Bulut Jr., President & Chief Brewing Officer at Great Lakes Brewery raises a glass to celebrate their 30th anniversary. The Etobicoke-based craft brewery was started by his father, Peter Bulut Sr., in 1987 and has remained a family-run business ever since. Bulut Jr. was 21 years old when he started working at the brewery. In those days, they brewed a single beer; Great Lakes Lager followed a few years later by Red Leaf Lager. Now GLB offers over 30 brands, including seasonal, special edition, and collaboration brews. To celebrate their 30th anniversary, GLB is brewing a number of specialty, small batch releases,

packaged in fancy new bottles. The first beer to be release in their 30th Anniversary series was the Barrel-Aged Belgian Style Quad (ABV: 11.3%) and aged in Pinot Noir barrels for 11 months. The second in their series was a collaboration brew with beer writers and was named Alternative Facts (ABV: 3.8%); hence the tongue-in-cheek media reference.

Let the good times roll. Bulut Jr. and the folks at GLB are filming a documentary to mark their 30th anniversary. Stay tuned for new brew releases and events, including their Deck Parties which will start as soon as the weather permits. Check out what’s on tap at GLB’s retail store and support our local, award-winning craft brewery. ---

After 30 years in business, you most definitely have an impact on your community. “Craft brewing is very labour-intensive,” explains Bulut Jr., who’s company continues to create jobs in Etobicoke as they keep pace with the increased demand for their beer. “We’re romantically inefficient,” he says with a chuckle. GLB employs about 40

people, most of whom are local to the area. With pride, Bulut Jr. notes that Mike Lackey, Head Brewer, has been with GLB for 26 years.

THE DOCUMENTARY

What better way to celebrate 30 years in business than by commissioning a documentary film. In keeping with their history of supporting local businesses, Great Lakes Brewery hired David Hodge of GreenSuite 209 in Etobicoke to produce the documentary. It will feature footage of brewery tours, interviews with GLB staff, and beer writers, as well as 30th Anniversary events. Stay tuned to GLB for its release. ---

GLB BEER LABEL ARTIST: GARNETT GERRY

Known best for their great tasting beer, Great Lakes Brewery takes things one step further with their witty beer names and unique label designs. Enter Garnett Gerry. The self-titled “professional doodler” and artist behind many of GLB’s beer label designs. Gerry has been drawing since he first picked up a pencil at the age of three. Gerry’s doodling prowess had been noticed at a local west-end bar.

18

“I have a habit of sketching on beer coasters,” explains Gerry. He was approached to create a design for the Pompous Ass label. Successful in his attempt, Gerry has designed additional labels, including one for Canuck Pale Ale. Notice the resemblance between Gerry and Gordie Levesque, the fearless Canadian lumberjack iconically personified on its label. Follow Gerry’s work on instagram...

INDIAN CUISINE BY THE LAKE

“So good!” That’s what we keep hearing about Indian Cuisine By The Lake. No wonder, their casual atmosphere is perfect for a family dinner or date night. The service is excellent and the food is fantastic. Danny Sahdra, owner of Indian Cuisine By The Lake and Port Credit BIA “Good Neighbour” award winner, is a gracious host. TALKING DEATH WITH AN ENGLISHMAN A number of weeks ago, I was interviewed for a podcast about men, success, and work-life balance. The interviewer, a friendly young man based in London, England, knew I was a funeral director. What I do for a living – and for the living – was off limits on-air. The host didn’t want the interview to be “weird” or “depressing.”

I have had heartbroken people, including young parents, apologize for crying as they look at their beloved and realize life will never be the same. I am fierce in my belief that people should be allowed the time, space, and kindness to grieve.

Instead I was coached to talk about my six kids, my wife and my hobbies. (Yes, he said “hobbies.”) I was to chat about all the “good stuff” that makes life happy, successful, and worth living.

Although we live in a grief-avoidant culture, Canadians are still doing better than our friends across the pond. We have more funerals in Canada, we invite the deceased “to the party” in the form of a casket or urn, and we judge a funeral “good” if there are tears, laughter, and hugs.

My Kafkaesque quip “The meaning of life is that it ends” didn’t inspire laughter but an uncomfortable pre-show pause. So, I shared a confession and offered to pull the plug on the interview.

Canadians are not cursed by a stiff upper lip or cold heart, but we are still impatient and overly logical when it comes to grief, especially around cruel myths like “closure,” “getting over it” and “staying busy.”

For me, my great undertaking and meaning in life is rooted in funeral service. It is impossible for me to talk about the joy and celebration in life – universal themes like love, kindness, peace, belonging – without acknowledging that life eventually stops, no matter how much success or work-life balance you possess!

What I attempted to explain to my host was that although it’s nice to have the mainstream trappings (root word: trap) of success like a house, a car, a business, a family, in the end – and, folks, there is an end – what really makes our lives meaningful is to love and to receive love. For me, a funeral is love in action.

The reason I appreciate my life daily and deeply is because when I come to work, I walk into a world where someone’s story has ended. I see the people left behind and watch as they’re encouraged to be brave, strong and celebratory.

We come together, we grieve, we mourn, we celebrate. And we savour life and death. Together.
