CLOUD HEADS OPENS IN LONG BRANCH Opening April 1, Cloud Heads is helping people in our community deal with health issues naturally. The shop sells hemp-based food items and drinks that bring together the nutritional and medical benefits of the hemp plant. Not to be confused with marijuana, hemp refers to the industrial, non-drug variant that is cultivated for its fiber, hurd, and seeds. Its health benefits are numerous. Hemp seeds, for example, are rich in healthy fats, protein, and minerals. Hemp products are used to increase heart health and, as a rich source of fatty acids, can even be used to treat skin issues like eczema. Research has also shown the benefits of hemp in the treatment of women’s health, namely the symptoms relating to premenstrual syndrome as well as menopause. Hemp products are also used to improve digestive health, helping to slow down the digestion process and promote healthy elimination.

The medical compound extracted from hemp leaves, stems, and blossoms has proved to be instrumental in the treatment of conditions such as arthritis, epilepsy, and even multiple sclerosis. Its use is becoming more popular within the aging population as its benefits are becoming more understood and the stigma of the hemp plant and its products is lifted through increased awareness and education. Stop by to learn more about hemp’s health benefits. ... CLOUD HEADS 3341 Lake Shore Blvd W (West of Twenty Seventh St)

STAND AGAIN THIS EASTER I N S P I R A T I O N

There was a moment in the Bible when Jesus was comforting a woman in her worst moment. The man she loved was dead. This woman has lost all that she loved, hoped for, and her future. Jesus looked at this woman and then looked through his vocabulary and said to her, “Anastasi”. “I am the resurrection (anastasi) and the life.” John 11:25. Anastasi, it’s a compound word meaning, “Up Again”. Ana (Stand) and Stasi (Again). So what Jesus is saying in this moment of loss, anxiety and suffering is, “When you have me you can look at whatever you’re facing and, Stand Again!”

MATTHEW DOUGLAS Pastor

know that something will come against you in the future that is even bigger than what you’re facing today. I don’t know what’s going to happen next but what I do know is whatever it is, if you have Jesus you’re going to be standing again (Stasis)! You might be knocked down by life again but if the Again God is in you then you’re getting back up Again!

Ana (Stand). At some point this world will tap you on the shoulder and whisper, “Stay down.” What will your answer be? You can be one of the few who stand up (Ana) when everything is against you. You don’t build a story if you just give up. The world is full of people who have given up. The world doesn’t need more people who give up. The world needs hope. The world needs men and women who stand up. Now we need that second part, Stasis (Again). I don’t know who you are, but I

SPRING DETOX TIPS April tends to inspire Spring cleaning and a desire to lighten the load in time for the summer months. Marie Kondo is a great help for getting your house in order but how about getting your body in order? In previous articles, we’ve talked a lot about managing stress and finding balance. This month we will focus on detoxification, with tips on how to Spring-clean for your body.

OIL PULLING It’s a great place to start your detox journey. So what is oil pulling and why, how and when should you do it? Oil pulling is a simple Ayurvedic technique that helps improve gum and dental health by dissolving bacteria and helping to strengthen gums and whiten teeth. Did you know it also helps to clean the blood and lymphatic system? GETTING STARTED Take a tablespoon of oil in your mouth (try not to gag from the texture) and swish it like a mouth wash for up to 20 minutes. First thing in the morning is best but if not, make sure you do it on an empty stomach. This prevents nausea and promotes the maximum release of enzymes in your saliva that are vital to pulling toxins from your blood and lymphatic system. Spit it out into the trash. DO NOT SWALLOW! DO NOT SPIT into the sink as it can clog your pipes. Coconut oil is best because it possesses strong antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, and is full of antioxidants; but you can also use any vegetable-based oils.

Co-Owners Monkey Tree Fitness & Wellness

If you want to experience the wonders of oil pulling, it all starts with a tablespoon and 20 minutes. Try it! It could change your life. HOW IT WORKS Toxins are pulled from your blood and lymph and trapped in the oil by pulling. The 20 minutes is the time it takes for your blood to pass through your gums. BENEFITS Some benefits you may experience include: > Increased energy and alertness > Improved immune function > Clearer skin (I’ve zapped a few pimples by pulling oil)

HORSE RACING IN THE ROARING TWENTIES L O N G B R A N C H H I S T O R Y

When was the last time you found a lucky horseshoe? Last year while I was on site of a landscaping reconfiguration for one of Long Branch’s original cottages, a young landscaper yelled out in astonishment, “Look what I found!” In all its revealing form, there it was - a rusty but glorious horseshoe.

while the other throws down a riding stick in total disappointment.

Let’s time warp back to the early 1800s and imagine you are exploring through the thick forest of pine and oak and hear men yelling at the top of their lungs.

Within the massive Smith tract of land, Col. Samuel Smith had his own race track and spent much time and money importing and breeding fine horses, sadly at the expense of his farming and lumbering skills.

The elated man is non other than Colonel Samuel Smith and the dejected gentlemen is Lt. Governor John Graves Simcoe. Both men were good friends and besides their equal obsession with equestrian breeding, Being the ever curious history sleuth that I they often shared their non-governmental am, it sparked the W5 about the horseshoe. pastime in game, hunting, and fishing.

Dufferin and Thorncliffe Race Tracks, as well as the Kenilworth of Windsor, the Long Branch Track was destined to be Ontario’s leading race track establishment in size, amenities and modern architectural design. Abe Orpen even arranged for a spur of the Canadian and Grand Trunk Railways to be built and service his race track with passenger trains full of horse betting patrons coming from as far as American to his racing mecca. The next time you go to IKEA from Evans you can still see the old, abandoned hydro poles that ran along the Long Branch Race Track spur. The rails are still in use for industry cargo and shipping. On Saturday, September 6th 1924, the Long Branch Race Track opened for a $1.00 plus War tax admission fee. ( $15.00 plus HST in today’s value). There was a bit of a snag, however, as Race Track officials had to wait for the western and eastern passenger trains to arrive before they could actually start the first race; a five furlong distance for two-year-olds with a purse valued at $800. On first impression, Abe Orpen, president of the Long Branch Racing Association Ltd. appeared to be the classic cigar smoking, intimating, larger-than-life (with his generous weight, girth and height), wheeling-and-dealing millionaire. My guess is that he used his business persona for just that, business. In actually fact, he despised the social elite crowds and when attending a meet at his race track, he sat with his patrons as inconspicuously as possible. In addition, Abe was a serving executive of the Ontario Jockey Club. No Perks was the rule for fellow members. There were no special member boxes or seats at any of his race tracks.

Abe, as mysterious as he was, never ever let one his gambling patrons suffer financial distress. If someone got in over their head, Abe would pay off their gambling debt but with the condition that they could never gamble at his establishment again. When asked about gambling advice, Abe’s reply was: “Don’t. But if you do, I can take your bet.” During the 1030s, “Uncle Abe” as he was known, payed for and ran a soup kitchen that would feed 500 men twice a week. He died in 1937, and despite his incredible financial legacy, his headstone in St. James Cemetery reads of compassion: “He fed the hungry, he clothed the poor and he buried the dead.”After Abe’s passing, his son Frederick took over the reigns of the until 1955 when the land and charter gambling rights were sold to brewery magnate, Edward Plunket Taylor. Equally astute in business dealings, Taylor (breeder of Canada’s fastest race horse, Northern Dancer), quickly amalgamated the Long Branch track with old Woodbine Park and built the new Woodbine Race Track in Rexdale. History is always in repeat mode with variations. In March 2019, it was announced that a major redevelopment of Woodbine Entertainment Hub with race track, Casino, hotel and convention centre is in the works.

MP JAMES MALONEY TALKS ABOUT HIS PASSION O N T H E C O V E R James Maloney

MP, Etobicoke-Lakeshore

location: Office146

I had the privilege of speaking with James Maloney, Member of Parliament for the riding of Etobicoke-Lakeshore during our photo shoot for the cover of this Spring edition at Office146 on Thirtieth Street. James has always struck me as a genuinely humble man since the first time we met a few years ago. He’s very active in our community and I often see him at the events we cover for this publication. I’ve witnessed how he speaks with people. He is sincerely interested in what they have to say and he connects with his constituents on a personal level. In my opinion, James is far from the stereotypical politician we often see portrayed in mainstream media. He took the time to answer a few questions, even after a two-day marathon voting session in the House of Commons. I think that speaks volumes of his character as well as his passion for Etobicoke-Lakeshore.

16

Can you tell us about your connection to the riding of Etobicoke-Lakeshore? This is my home. I grew up here and have lived here for over 40 years. I attended Our Lady of Sorrows followed by Michael Power High School. After graduating from law school, I came home and bought my first house in Mimico and then moved to the north end of the riding. Every part of our community is amazing; the businesses, the diversity, and the opportunities that are here are second to none. While there is no question today’s Etobicoke-Lakeshore is beautiful and the best place to live, I have become fascinated by the fact that where we live is also steeped in history, as anyone who has seen my MP mailouts knows. I enjoy including fun historical facts about our different neighbourhoods in every issue. I have been really pleased with the positive response I get, everywhere I go. People are starting to send in stories and I really appreciate that. Keep them coming!

ETOBICOKE LAKESHORE PRESS

FOR ETOBICOKE-LAKESHORE What is one of the key issues facing Etobicoke-Lakeshore today? One of the big issues I have been advocating for since day one has been better transit for our riding. I hosted a meeting bringing all three levels of government together along with the head of TTC and reps from Metrolinx to discuss the need for a Park Lawn GO station. This is a project I feel strongly about and I have been working very hard to make it a reality. Thankfully, this project is supported by the Mayor and Metrolinx is also onboard. Other than being the MP for Etobicoke-Lakeshore, are there particular areas you are also involved in? I have the privilege to serve as Chair of the House of Commons Natural Resources Committee, which gives me the opportunity to see issues from a variety of perspectives. At the same time, I am able to share the opinions of our community and our experiences in Etobicoke-Lakeshore on the national stage, raising the profile of our incredible riding. Closer to home, I am co-chair of the 416 Caucus, which brings together all the MPs from the 416 area. We work together to ensure our voices are heard in the policy-developing process in Ottawa. We also work with the Mayor and members of Council on issues of mutual interest. The Irish heritage in Toronto and in our riding is rich. I am Chair of the Canada-Ireland Interparliamentary Group, which works at strengthening the ties between our two countries, in terms of trade and diplomacy and cultural friendship. We enjoy very strong commercial relations with two-way bilateral merchandise trade worth $2.4 billion in 2016, making it Canada’s tenth largest trading partner in the European Union. Ireland is a force to be reckoned with and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with fellow Parliamentarians, the business and diplomatic communities on building that relationship.

By: Roger Tumminieri

I understand you organize mental health events in the riding. How did that come about? When I became an MP, I heard about the incredible mental health struggles that individuals in our riding, individuals from every walk of life - adults, families and children face, some on a daily basis. So, in my first year as an MP, I established a yearly mental health forum, showcasing the services available in our community as well as providing a safe place for people to come and hear from experts about issues. This May, I will be hosting my fourth event which will look at how to take care of ourselves, how to focus on mental health as an aspect of our own overall health. I remember I was shocked to learn that 70 per cent of mental health illnesses begin at a young age and so two years ago I focused on youth mental health. I mention it because I had asked the late Hon. Michael Wilson, former finance minister and Etobicoke MP who was chair of the Mental Health Commission of Canada to make a video. It was a very moving experience and the video itself is powerful. The Prime Minister shared it on social media and I was told that the Raptors put a shortened version on their Jumbotron during Mental Health Week. It was a huge success for raising awareness. You can see the full video on my website at www.jamesmaloneymp.ca Another extremely rewarding project I have been involved in was advocating for federal funds for a national suicide hotline. At last year’s mental health event, we featured suicide as a topic and once again, I was shocked because I was told that a national hotline didn’t already exist. After that I became a vocal supporter of creating one and was deeply moved when the federal budget included $25 million over 5 years to establish one. We worked very hard with the mental health community to make that happen and I was so proud to see it get the money it so richly deserves. So yes, mental health became a huge issue for me to champion in my time as an MP because it is such an important issue for the riding and for all Canadians.

What role have you played in the House of Commons to advocate for housing in our riding?

C A L L

I have also been a vocal advocate and supporter of the National Housing Strategy. This was a priority from the get-go for the government, bringing together the public, private and non-profit sectors to improve the dire situation we were facing in Canada, most notably in Toronto. We held consultations and discussions and I am proud of what we are doing. For starters, we are funding $2.88 billion to support social and community housing, including repair and construction and housing affordability. Through the Rental Construction Financing we are providing low-cost loans for the construction of new rental housing for modest- and middle-income Canadians. To help people get into the market, we just increased the amount first-time home buyers can withdraw from their Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) to $35,000 to buy a home. These are just a few initiatives of the massive Strategy.

You ask... We Clean It!

T O

Meeting the interesting people living and working in our riding is one of the most gratifying aspects of my job. People who improve the lives of others, people helping people, people who make amazing products that make our lives better - all of them are inspiring stories. To give you an example, every day when I look up on the roof in Parliament in the new West Block where the new House of Commons meets, I see the beautiful work of Nelson Garrett, a third generation custom lighting fixture manufacturer located in the riding. Everyone in Parliament now knows about Nelson Garrett! I think of FEAT, an organization that helps children of incarcerated parents, I think of seniors’ organizations, of schools, of health care workers who go the extra mile. I think of the brilliant local entrepreneurs with their enthusiasm and determination. They all inspire me. To do my share to help them and people who run into roadblocks gives me the most satisfaction and I hope to continue to serve the constituents of Etobicoke-Lakeshore in the years to come. GUIDE TO CELEBRATING MOTHER’S DAY owners, Irina Nikolova and Chef Daniel Ansu, have a young family, themselves (three kids, including a brand new baby!). [Editor’s Note: Mom’s now’s your chance to subtly hint to your hubby that you’d love to eat at Trius +aiM on Mother’s Day.]

2. BUY HER CHOCOLATES We can’t stress the importance of buying Mom chocolate. Eat at Trius + aiM

Looking to level-up your Mother’s Day game? Let us help you. If you could only do two things to show your wife and/or Mom how much you love and appreciate her, we recommend you do following...

1. NO COOKING Take Mom out for breakfast, brunch, lunch, and/or dinner. Whatever you do, don’t let her cook on Mother’s Day (or clean up, for that matter).

No Mother’s Day should be complete without the consumption of chocolate. So, where do you go to get the good stuff? Simple. Make the short drive out to Mimico to Ed’s Real Scoop. Owner, Mark Johnson, sells only the best - Belgian chocolate. He actually makes it himself in-store! Buy a box of their chocolate turtles, a pint of chocolate ice cream (they make several different varieties), and while you’re there, you might as well pick up some chocolate fudge. Done and done!

Surprise her with breakfast in bed. Get the kids involved if they’re old enough. Even your baby can serve toast (ok, maybe not your baby). But you get the picture. Begin the pampering process immediately upon her waking up. Speaking of sleep, do whatever it takes to ensure Mom gets some extra Z’s. No need to pounce on her with a tray full of eggs and a glass of OJ the instant you and the kids wake up. The number one thing Moms want for Mother’s Day is (you guessed it) some extra sleep! If you have a baby at home, you’ll understand why. Now that Mom is well rested, get the kids cleaned up and take your loving wife out to eat. It’s probably a good idea to make a reservation somewhere. You don’t want to be that guy. We recommend taking Mom out to eat at Trius + aiM. They’re super-close (just on Brown’s Line, north of Lake Shore) and are probably one of the most family-friendly restaurants in the area. That’s likely because

Most people believe great joy and great sorrow bring out the best in others. Look at how the Western world interacts with the British Royal Family. We celebrate their weddings although we’re not invited. We leave flowers, cards and expressions of condolences for dead people we’ve never met. Our public expressions of joy and grief regularly heighten our belief in humanity’s good nature and good manners. Then why is it, funeral director Brad Jones wonders, funerals for friends and family can dig up old grudges and resentments?

The funeral trade has taught me many things over the years. And one thing I know for sure, as Oprah likes to say -- imagine what her funeral will be like!?! – is if a person is prideful and addicted to status and rank in their daily life, they’re not going to change once they’re inside the confines of a funeral home.

In my experience, both personal and professional, at times of great joy and great pain people don’t really change, rise above, put their best foot forward. If you’re able to grieve openly, loudly and oh-so-publicly for a person you don’t know but you’re unable to forgive your (dead) mom or (dead) dad or (dead) brother or (dead) sister, there is a definite disconnect between your head and heart that aches to be healed. Remember how long the Queen took to acknowledge Princess Diana’s death? It was days before she ventured outside the Palace gates and admired the shrine dedicated to her estranged former daughter-in-law. We are all human no matter how rich or poor in character we are. We’re emotional creatures blessed with the ability to love deeply and mourn greatly when a relationship we cherish feels as if it’s been ripped away. As in life, at a funeral we can choose to bare our teeth and lunge at perceived threats because we feel wounded and frightened. Or we can seek comfort and strength in the people who love us and the people who can help support the heavy lifting of mourning. Family feuds are rarely solved at a funeral. But there is no need to take the family feud into the funeral parlour. Hard feelings will not make the hard pew you’re sitting in softer or more comfortable.

SPRING MARKET EXPECTATIONS R E A L E S T A T E

Spring brings warmer whether, but what’s really starting to heat up this time of year is the real estate market. We thought we’d ask a local expert to better understand what her expectations are for this year’s spring real estate market and the affect new developments will have on our neighbourhoods. We sat down with Diana Victoria Quinn, Sales Representative and Managing Partner at Forest Hill Etobicoke in Long Branch to get her thoughts on what we can expect to see in local real estate this spring. What impact do you feel new condo and townhome developments will have on the neighbourhood as well as the local business community? Homeowners have a vested interest in our neighbourhoods and they are concerned about the impact of development on their day-to-day living and on the value of their properties. There’s no question that building more housing is key to alleviating affordability and housing pressures in our city. The population in the GTA will continue to grow at a steady annual pace, between two and 2.5 per cent in 2019. The goal is to enhance the supply of affordable, family-friendly housing like town homes, semi-detached, and condominiums, and creating compact communities that include appropriate densities and a balanced mix of housing, jobs, shopping and services within walking distance to major transit stations such as GO stations. Long Branch, Mimico, Alderwood, and New Toronto have all the perfect elements. They have charm, mature trees, lots of history and are full of character. With 8 active projects with an average price per square foot of $1,072 and 2 new development applications, communities along Etobicoke’s waterfront are changing quickly which has its benefits. These developments will bring fresh life, add value to current resale homes, and introduce new community amenities such as grocery stores, doctors’ offices, restaurants, and shops which are all important ties to our community at large. Empire Phoenix, a new high rise condominium development, launched last year and sold 70% in less than 4 months due to its affordable pricing, close proximity to Lake Shore Blvd. and the GO Train. 22

How fast can homeowners expect to sell their homes this spring? For homes, the average Days on Market (DOM) has reduced month after month from January 1, 2019. In January 2019, it took an average of 29 days for a freehold property to sell at 97% sale-to-list price. In February, it took 28 days at 99% sale-to-list price, and from March 1 to 18, in took 20 days on the market at 100% sale-to-list. How do you expect this year’s spring market to perform compared to spring 2018? More movement, with a similar amount of inventory, and increasing prices. How are the new mortgage rules going to affect the spring market? Assuming borrowing costs will be lower on average compared to 2018, it is expected that many home buyers will move from the sidelines from the effects of the OSFI-mandated stress test. They’ll likely purchase a more affordable type of home and potentially in a different location than originally planned. The stats are supporting this, with less time on the market. Price growth is a function of demand and supply, and there is currently a healthy supply with higher saleto-list prices.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM Q1 2019 LONG BRANCH 12 detached homes sold with an average selling price of $1,040,892. ALDERWOOD 7 detached homes sold with an average selling price of $1,110,570. NEW TORONTO 9 detached homes sold with an average selling price of $975,433. MIMICO 14 detached homes sold with an average selling price of $1,051,470. (source: TREB MLS, Jan. 1 to Mar. 18, 2019)

RENOVATION TAX CREDITS Spring cleaning and renovations are about to begin (or continue) full speed ahead. Did you know that renovation junk or even an old vehicle could make you money? Here’s how it works.

Y O U R

The first donation assessed at $200 gets a federal credit of 15%, plus an Ontario tax credit of 5.05%. Anything over $200 receives a federal tax credit of 29% and an Ontario credit of 11.16%. This is a credit of $361.38 for a $1000 donation of assessed objects or cash to a qualified charity. ReStore/Habitat for Humanity is local and gives you a receipt for items such as used windows and doors, kitchen cabinets, or other construction materials assessed at a value of over $150. They even do pick-up. So if you’re in the middle of a renovation and see you’re not using that old sink or counter, give them a call.

MORTGAGE FINANCING If you’re having difficulty securing financing for a mortgage, you’re not alone. With the new stress test in place and what seems like increased risk aversion among big banks, mortgages from traditional lenders are harder to come by. That said, it’s not impossible to get financing for your home or even a construction loan to renovate your current house. There are plenty of mortgage brokers out there. Some seemingly of the fly-by-night variety, unfortunately. So how do you know who to trust? The truth is, you don’t. When my wife and I were renewing our mortgage, we reached out to someone we knew for help; our friend, Jon Sowerby. Jon is the president of our son’s rugby club and we know him to be a trustworthy fellow. He’s also a licensed mortgage broker and Partner at TvH Group. Jon and Carter managed our expectations from the onset with timely, concise communication. Bottom line is, they were easy to work with and extremely proactive. It’s not my place to recommend financial professionals, but I will in this case. DON’T SELL, RENOVATE. Y O U R H O M E

My mentor taught me that 50% of a project is in the planning. His legacy of wisdom and attention to detail live on. People often move into, and retire in, their starter home. It’s not uncommon for a family to renovate three or four times instead of moving. Budget restraints are usually the cause of why clients choose to renovate a number of times. The first renovations are usually done out of necessity. Upgrading an old and occasionally dangerous knob and tube electrical system, root-damaged drains, or perhaps a new roof is needed. Practical renovations may include replacing an old kitchen, rotten deck, or adding an extra bathroom for an expanding family. Perhaps you’re ready for one final renovation and your budget no longer dictates your scope. A large majority of homes in the GTA are dated circa 1950, much like the ones this magazine is delivered to in Long Branch. These houses were typically dark inside and divided up into small, awkward spaces. Listening to my clients, designing around their original home is an option that interests them. This is the home where the children grew up and where so many memories took place. The top three comments I hear are: > “We would like more light.” > “It’s drafty and cold.” > “We would like a more functional and updated living space.” Yes, I completely understand the concept of having a bright home, especially when moving toward retirement years. Ample light is essential in combating Canadian winter fatigue. Light solutions can mean raising ceilings, incorporating skylights, upgrading with new windows, doors, and removing walls. Home comfort solutions that address “Drafty and Cold” could easily stand on its own as a topic. For the sake of this article, heat solutions best start from the basement up. We go through your home and target specific areas that are not contributing to your building envelope performance. 24

GORDON DEANE

Residential Construction Expert Owner, Deane design + build Inc. These suggestions are part of a thorough renovation proposal, meaning even the old parts of your home that remain will be considered in the overall project scope. Foundation walls can benefit through exterior grading, new weeping tiles, a newly incorporated sump pump, spray foam applied to open rim joists, main floor walls, roof solutions, etc. Performance rated windows, door systems, and radiant floors complete the outside building envelope picture. [Side Note: I renovated my Master bathroom three years ago and installed radiant heated floors. Wow, love them!] By addressing the first two topics, we have made great progress in upgrading the functionality of your home. We have discussed your ideas, listened and collaborated to create a personal plan for you, making your home very comfortable. Perhaps addressing “functional and updated living space” should have been first on the list, but I kept this comment in third place because form always follows function. Transforming a tired, dated space to create a fresh new representation of who you are is truly the fun part of your renovation.

TIPS FOR SAVING YOUR HERITAGE FLOORS Heritage homes are often some of the most memorable. They are also some of the most labour or cost intensive. You could spend countless hours and dollars on maintaining your beautiful vintage home, including repairs and upgrades to your roof, windows, bathroom and kitchen fixtures, electrical and plumbing and the list goes on. But is it possible to enjoy the charm of a heritage home without the deteriorating reminders of its age? In this article we focus on arguably the largest “original” feature of a heritage house; its floor. Watch Your Humidity and Temperature Wood is a natural material which “breathes” and changes depending on environmental factors. For example, if there is a lot of moisture in the air a plank of wood will absorb this moisture and widen as a result. The same effect can be observed in your heritage floors. Multiplied by many planks of wood which are your floor, this effect can add up to significant dimensional changes and shifts in your floor. These changes create very strong forces that can pull up nails and screws, warp and bend the planks, sometimes even bulging the whole floor. Similarly, dry environments wick the moisture away from the floorboards, shrinking them. This effect loosens fasteners and creates the gaps and voids you can often see between your hardwood floorboards. The trouble is not only visual, but practical. The open voids in your floor allow for dirt and water to seep in and rot the floor from within. This is why we never recommend washing hardwood floors with water!

GETTING YOUR GAS BBQ READY FOR SPRING

F O O D & D R I N K I know what you’re thinking – WHY are we talking about prepping our barbecues so soon? Well, spring isn’t that far away – plus, who wants to eat off a barbecue with last year’s gunk on it? Here are simple steps to getting your barbecue ready to roll.

Now it’s time to clean. A good start is from the inside – out. Start with cleaning the grates and burners. Using soapy water and a brush, start brushing away burnt-on food, cob webs, debris, or anything else unwanted. Cleaning away any parts of the burners that may be clogged will help encourage max performance. Avoid burning off your BBQ to clean.

First thing’s first – be prepared. Soap and water will work for cleaning, but not as efficiently as a cleaner and degreaser made specially for barbecues. Find a formula that works on your type of grill: stainless steel, cast iron, ceramic, and the list goes on (some formulas will work on multiple surfaces). Do not use oven cleaner, this could damage your grill. You’ll also need cleaning tools: a grill brush, sponge, paper towels, bucket, and a clean rag are a good start. To start, do a leak check. Hoses can crack over the winter or become loose if not used for some time. Starting at the farthest end from the barbecue, use soap and water on the hose and watch for bubbles. Bubbles are a sign of a leak and the hose should then be tightened (if the bubbles are at the connecting point) or replaced.

Don’t forget the drip trays. The tray can be taken out and wiped down easily. Do not line the tray with aluminum foil; although you save cleaning time, the aluminum can be a fire hazard. For the catch tray (under the drip tray), you can purchase aluminum lining pans designed for your model of barbecue to make cleanup easier. Lastly, wipe down the inner lid and get the outside nice and shiny. For more in-depth info on cleaning and maintaining your barbecue, contact us at @BarbecuesGalore.

THE HIBERNATION IS OVER! M O M L I F E

If you had your baby in the summer, then I’m sure you can appreciate what it was like during your first winter. Long days spent inside and out of the cold can tend to get to a person, especially if you haven’t had much, if any, sleep in months. Now that Spring has sprung, Mama Bear is leaving the den with baby in tow. The long hibernation is over! Here are some things I’m looking forward to doing this spring and into the summer months that are local and free... 1. Baby Drop-Ins Full disclosure: I didn’t stay in the house all winter, although at times it felt that way. I made it out to several of the local baby drop-ins and really enjoyed watching Luke interact with other kids his age, some even younger than him. It’s always nice to have some adult conversation, too. Something I don’t always get when I’m at home with Luke, or my husband for that matter (just joking, love). Try these drop-ins on for size, both of which are offered for free courtesy of LAMP: > Long Branch Baptist Church > LAMP Community Health Centre 2. Camping Out At Marie Curtis We’re lucky to live so close to one of the best parks in Toronto. Marie Curtis will be Luke’s home playground this spring and he’ll be joined by his big brother, Jaxon, once school is out. Bring on the pop-up tent, sand toys, and beach blanket. Can’t wait!

3. Long Lakefront Stroller Walks One of the things I love about living in Long Branch is our proximity to the lake. Being near the water is so calming and I’m looking forward to some long, leisurely stroller walks along the path from Marie Curtis to Samuel Smith Park and back. 4. Running With Luke Most of all, I’m looking forward to running again! I just bought a running stroller and I’m getting it prepped for Luke’s first run. He’s showing signs of being a little dare devil, so I think he’s going to love going fast with Mommy.

CONVERSATIONS WITH THE EASTER BUNNY Hi, all. This month I want to tell you about my conversations with the Easter Bunny.

K I D

He’s been visiting me in my dreams and getting me all excited for Easter. I can’t wait to search for the eggs he’s going to hide all over the house. This is my baby brother’s first Easter, so I think I’ll help Luke look for eggs. Since he can’t eat them yet, I will be a good big brother and help him with that, too.

L I F E

I also love Easter because my Daddy brings home lots of amazing treats from around the neighbourhood. He loves to go to Lale Bakery in Long Branch to buy Mommy pastries and chocolates. Sometimes I sneak some when she’s not looking. Now that it’s getting warmer out, Daddy’s been bringing me to Ed’s Real Scoop for ice cream!!! They also have special Easter treats. Isn’t life grand? I’m looking forward to Mother’s Day, too. I can’t wait to surprise Mommy with a super special Jaxon gift; a clean room!

BA, BA, BA... Hi, I’m Luke! I’m 9 months old and this is my very first magazine article, EVER. My brother, Jax, gets to write one each month and since I want to do everything he does, I talked my Daddy into letting me write for his mag. I told him I’ll be his Baby Life Editor. So, what’s up these days with Baby Life, you ask? Well, for starters, I’m crawling! In fact, I can almost stand. You know what that means? Yep, I’ll be walking soon! Once I can walk, I can help Daddy and Jax deliver magazines. I can’t wait!
