NEIGHBOURHOOD NEWS

Wanda Buote, Principal of Humber College - Lakeshore Campus, addresses onlookers at the official launch of The GARDENS Pod project. In conjunction with LAMP Community Health Centre, the project aims to assist in creating an Urban Agricultural Framework for South Etobicoke, a newly defined Urban Priority Area in the City of Toronto. The primary aim is food security, support for low-income earners, lone-parent families, seniors, people living on fixed-incomes, and people with disabilities living in the area. 6

The GARDENS Pod Project is similar to the concept of a community garden except the pods tend to be smaller, mobile, raised beds that don’t need a lot of space and are spread throughout the community. With help from Humber College and other participating organizations in South Etobicoke, The GARDENS Pod Project expects to yield 500 kg of produce for distribution within the community. For more information on the project, visit: thegardenslakeshore.ca

If you have a budding PopStar in your life, then they will not want to miss an awesome week of singing, songwriting, in-studio recording, dancing, video-making, crafts, fashion studies, instrumental workshops, and exploring the world of music and technology. PRENATAL YOGA

By: Laura Mack your right thigh as you turn. Your right hand comes to the lower back for support. Without leaning back, continue gently to rotate the spine, looking over your right shoulder to include the neck. Breathing deeply, hold for 3 to 5 breaths. Repeat on the other side.

“Cat” on all fours

Come forward on to your hands and knees, placing your hands directly under your shoulders and knees under hips. Begin to draw your belly up and in, dropping your tailbone down and rounding the spine. Release gently, coming back to a neutral position. Repeat 2 to 5 times. During the nine months of pregnancy, a mother’s body undergoes enormous physiological changes to make room for baby to develop and grow. New demands are placed on her system as she breathes, moves, sleeps, and digests. This gentle, 10-minute yoga sequence is a great way to bring mindfulness to your breathing and to alleviate some back discomfort:

Twist

Come to a comfortable seated position with the hips higher than the knees. Breathing deeply, relax your lower back down towards the ground with each exhalation. Starting from the hips, allow your spine to rotate gentle to the right as you breathe out. Move your left hand across your body and hold on to

Wide Knee Child’s Pose

Kneel on the floor and bring the knees wide apart and the big toes together. With your awareness on your breathing, exhale and relax your lower back downwards towards your feet. Keeping your back, neck, and shoulders relaxed, lean forward from your hip joints, placing your palms on the floor in front of you. Keep focusing on relaxing your lower back downwards and sinking your weight into your hip joints. If this feels comfortable and available to you, then walk your hands further away from you and come all the way down to the floor. Stacking one hand on top of the other to create a shelf for the forehead to relax. Stay here for 5 to 10 breaths.

Celebrating Mother’s Day in Humber Bay Susan Quaglieri Real Estate by Design

Pauline Duhart Ease Up Organizing

Rosa with Grandchildren Rosa is visiting Toronto from Brazil. Her son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren live in the condo at the foot of Humber Bay. She is enjoying her visit with her family and is thrilled to be spending time with her grandchildren, taking a sunny walk along the Lakeshore. For Mother’s Day, Rosa will make a traditional Brazilian dish at home with her children and grandchildren. She thinks her children have some sort of surprise organized for her as well, but she is not sure what it is.

Sarah, Sandy & Courtney Sandy, and her two grown daughters make a regular effort to walk along the Lakeshore. Sandy grew up in the neighbourhood, so she knows all of the traditional restaurants and businesses along the strip, and is excited to explore the recent additions.

Rachelle and Kids Rachelle and her family are from North Toronto and, as a family outing, decided to visit Humber Bay to celebrate Mother’s Day.

LOCAL EVENTS

By: Chris Logan

It’s Festival Time! I’m so proud to be a part of the upcoming Mimico Village BIA Tulip Festival. The Festival is an annual event, stretching back 14 years, providing local school children with the opportunity to paint 23 4-foot unique tulip art forms with a message we can all learn from. This year, Festival proceeds will be donated to support the anti-bullying initiatives of The Canadian Centre of Abuse Awareness. The tulips will be painted in the theme of “Stop Bullying and Be a Friend”. This year, the Mimico Village BIA Tulip Festival will be working to showcase the talents of our creative local youth while raising awareness for the physical and psychological harm caused by bullying in an effort to increase everyone’s awareness of this intimidating and aggressive behaviour. At the same time, it’s also going to be a wonderful way to get out and enjoy a few hours of fun with your children and neighbours. A free event with activities for the whole family, this year’s Tulip Festival will feature rock-climbing, face-painting, cookie decorating, live music, and a huge Freeze Dance Competition. Be sure to stop by my tent to say hello and for chances to win free prizes. I hope to see you there! mimicotulipfestival.com 24

GEARING UP

By: Andrew Norris & Allan Mallouk

In today’s time and age most of our cars are equipped with TPMS sensors (Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems). Making sure they are working and programmed will ensure a safe trip knowing tires are properly inflated. If not, a quick circle check will do the trick. If any tires look or appear to be low, check with a tire pressure gauge or visit your local service station to have them inspected. For parents travelling with small children, car seats need to be inspected for proper installation. If you are unsure, you can visit your local fire station where the fire fighters are trained to help you. Also, car seats do have expiration dates. Make sure yours is valid and in good working order. 26
