Pauline Duhart Ease Up Organizing

MELISSA & NONNA ROSA Melissa will enjoy Thanksgiving dinner with her young family at her mother’s home in Brampton. Nonna Rosa is a chef and goes all out serving traditional turkey, as well as Italian extras such as lasagna, veggies, cakes, and cookies. They are all thankful to have Nonna Rosa in their lives.

TAMARA & EMILY Tamara grew up in Long Branch and then moved away, but now she’s back to stay. This time with her daughter, Emily. They go to Mom’s place for turkey dinner and Tamara brings homemade muffins and Nanaimo bars from her kitchen in Long Branch.

MORGAN, LESAR & TAYE Morgan and her family love having Thanksgiving at her sister’s home in Long Branch. This year, it’s her auntie’s turn to host the traditional turkey dinner, including all the seasonal trimmings, plus home-baked corn bread. And, for the first time, they are going to organize a family football game! ETOBICOKE LAKESHORE PRESS

ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE

By: Marlene Sammy

Thanksgiving is my favourite holiday. Our family has a tradition of heading North with loved ones to share food and laughs among the fiery changing leaves. I cherish this weekend and the opportunity to spend with family in nature; but I also love connecting and speaking out loud all that I am grateful for. Gratitude is important to me, and science says it makes for happier, healthier people. I’ve experienced firsthand how it can shift moods, thoughts, and entire perspectives. As a yoga teacher I speak of it often, almost always at the end of each class. This is usually an acknowledgment of our brilliant bodies coupled with an intentional cultivation of gratitude for ourselves - for showing up, moving, breathing, and sharing in this practice. I personally like to do a small gratitude practice in the mornings. Upon waking, still lying in my cozy bed beside my wonderful husband, I name three things I’m grateful for. They can be small things, such as the kind and funny exchange with that barrista yesterday, the beautiful movement of the clouds outside my window, the deep and nourishing breath available at any moment. But making gratitude your attitude can take some practice! All too often I find myself caught up and rushing to get ‘things done’. In those frazzled moments, I do my best to pause and bring myself photo: Scarleth White Photography

back to living from my love tank. On the right are three mantras that help nudge me along. Let us know how you practice gratitude on our Facebook Page @BranchYoga! Wishing everyone a joyous Thanksgiving! ---

HIDING DYSLEXIA

By: Roger Tumminieri

As another school year begins, parents and teachers should be aware that adaptability can be the cornerstone of a child or teen with Dyslexia. Learning how to hide his or her struggle with words becomes paramount. In today’s age of spell check, predictive text, and voice-enabled commands for smart phones, hiding Dyslexia can be easier than ever. While researching for this article, just about everyone I spoke with knew someone with Dyslexia or struggled with it themselves. Perfect strangers, but also people I know, including a family member whom I’ve known my entire life but was never aware that she struggled with the disorder. She still does. She’s a teacher now, but growing up she learned how to hide the fact that she had difficulty reading and spelling. She was fine phonetically, but somehow always improved upon her ability to hide her Dyslexia so as not to draw any unwanted attention to herself. She learned to adapt to continually evolving situations that would require her to read aloud in class or write essays.

representations of people, animals, objects, and even actions). Spelling and grammar don’t really count anymore when one can convey his or her thoughts with a series of images. The fact is, the English language is changing and people with Dyslexia are finding new ways to hide their condition. Since Dyslexia is hereditary and has no cure, many cases are passed on to future generations without proper treatment or appropriate remedial tutoring. Thankfully, both of which are now available through Learning Centres for Children. These Centres have been established to help kids cope with and overcome Dyslexia. Funding for the Learning Centres is provided by the Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation of Canada; a not-for-profit organization that operates Learning Centres across the country. The Foundation also awards biomedical research grants to help solve the puzzles of the mind, including the causes and eventual cure of Dyslexia, as well as Autism, Alzheimer’s Disease and other neurodegenerative diseases.

AT HOME

Ryan Kuz KARMATREE (647) 346.6712 karmatree.ca Toronto’s waterfront communities are covered by a beautiful network of tree canopies. Long Branch is home to a variety of large trees, like the daunting willows dotting Marie Curtis Park, and impressive oaks, ash, beech, silver maples, and white pines that magestically line our neighbourhood’s streets. Ryan Kuz is a Long Branch resident, Certified Arborist and owner of Karmatree. He can tell you if the trees on your property (or those on your neighbour’s) pose any type of risk. Keep in mind, if your property is damaged by a neighbour’s tree, you and your insurance company are responsible for damages. It’s also worth noting that even the healthiest looking tree can be hollow or rotted on the inside and pose a risk to people and property. 14

Many of our local ash trees are at risk or have already been affected by the province-wide infestation of Emerald Ash Borers; an invasive forest pest native to Asia that has killed millions of ash trees in southwestern Ontario. As re-development continues throughout Long Branch, the issue of lot splitting remains a hot topic. Trees within 6 metres of a construction site should be surrounded by protective fencing. If you think your trees or your neighbour’s trees may be at risk, consider a consultation with Kuz. Putting all chainsaw humour aside, the tagline: “Should have called Karmatree” rings true to anyone who’s ever tried to limb or cut down a tree (or their neighbour’s) by themselves. It’s never as easy as it looks.

ON CAMPUS What’s the buzz on campus this month? Here’s the scoop... Humber Lakeshore students are excited to get back into the swing of things this October. Everyone seems pretty happy about the new buildings on campus, too. The Wellness Centre is very popular with students and community members, alike. There’s also a lot of chatter about the new Interpretive Centre. Some people say the building used to be haunted. Spooky. ---

FIGHTING THE FLU

By: Jonathan Nhan, RPh, CDE Flu season is right around the corner. Typically from November to April, the flu hospitalizes approximately 12,200 Canadians and about 3,500 people will die from the flu or related complications.

Having active children often means we as parents have to constantly remind ourselves to exhale. We can be masters of preventing major injuries much of the time, but the reality of living an active lifestyle means risking injury. The majority of their scrapes and falls are completely innocuous and can be fixed with a good cleaning, a kiss, and a bandage. But there are times (and if you haven’t experienced this yet, you will) when you really do wonder if the accident requires medical attention. Let’s start with head trauma. Your child has taken a hard spill. If you’re ever in doubt, just seek medical attention. The fall may be more serious if your child experiences any of the following... #LiveLocal
