PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Photo: ©Andrea Marchant, As It Happens Photography

I’m really excited to publish this edition that highlights our new online magazine, LongBranch.life! Read our feature on page 8 to find out what LongBranch.life is all about, what makes it unique, and how you can join in by tagging your social media posts. We’ve also added a new editorial contributor to the fold; Matthew Douglas. He’s a Long Branch resident and Pastor at West Edge Community Church. Read his first article in a series entitled; ‘Dream, Risk, Create.’ on page 10. I would like to encourage all of our readers to take a moment of silence to themselves on November 11th or participate in a local ceremony to pay tribute to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our freedom. In that spirit, I’ve included a conversation about Remembrance Day with our five-year-old son. Note the innocence of his questions about war and what can be done to prevent it. As always, your feedback is really important to me. It helps me understand what you’d like to read in these pages each month and improve on how we present community content. Please reach out and let me know what you’d like to see us cover. Thank you very much for reading, Roger Tumminieri, Publisher FIAT LUX MEDIA

I recently had a conversation about Remembrance Day with our 5-year-old son. He asked me why we celebrate it. I explained that it’s a day when we remember all the people, both men and women, who fought and died for Canada to protect our freedom. Here’s how the rest of the brief yet insightful conversation unfolded... “Why did they have to fight?” He asked innocently. “Because we were at war,” I answered quickly. “Why was there a war?” He asked. I paused before answering this time, knowing that I needed a moment to collect my thoughts.

“They were started because some countries were doing very bad things to other countries. Canada’s leaders thought it was wrong so they decided to try and stop it.” This was the best I could come up with given my audience is in senior kindergarten. His next question, however, inspired me to publish our conversation. “But, Daddy,” he said with confidence. “Instead of fighting, why couldn’t they just use their words?” Silence prevailed as I mustered up a response which, in the end, was simply an approving nod and a big hug.

“We celebrate those who fought in several wars in our history,” I explained. Shining a Light on Local Businesses Since 2015

DREAM, RISK, CREATE. For Entrepreneurs

...

Matthew Douglas Pastor at West Edge Community Church and Long Branch Resident 157 Lakeshore Rd W 905-274-6564 / @westedgecc westedge.org

I have adopted these three words: dream, risk, create. If you’re an entrepreneur, I know this about you; you love to dream. In fact, most of us love to have big dreams. We also love the end result created by our talent, discipline, and focus - the business, the home, the art, the family. But most of us have a very uncomfortable relationship with the middle word, risk. It’s the reason why most dreams remain dreams, because to create something requires risk. A dream is an idea asking for permission to live. If you’re going to allow that idea to live, you’re going to have to take some risks. Dream, risk, create. It’s the order we have to follow.

SANTA’S COMING TO LONG BRANCH SATURDAY DECEMBER 2nd lakeshoresantaclausparade.com

SPONSORS & VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We have reports from Santa’s elves, who have been stationed in Long Branch since August, that all is well at the North Pole. The big guy, himself, is looking forward to the great trek down to the Lakeshore for the 27th annual Etobicoke Lakeshore Santa Claus Parade. Rumor has it that this is St. Nick’s favourite of all parades.

Tens of thousands of spectators will line Lake Shore again this year from Dwight to Thirty Sixth - or, as the locals would describe, from McDonald’s to Johnny’s. Bring your blankets, lawn chairs and something warm to drink. Settle in and enjoy what Mrs. Claus calls: “the best Christmas Parade in Canada.”

LIFE & DEATH Invisible Guests Attend Funerals Our love of ghost stories starts in childhood, evolves our entire lives and can twist into existential angst as we hit middle-age and beyond. Is there an afterlife? What happens when we die? Do ghosts really exist? Are spirits a trick or a treat? If you’re wondering whether my staff or I have ever seen a ghost in our funeral home, the answer is no. Never. We’ve never seen an oddly flickering lamp, a picture thrown off a wall or a locked door swinging open. See? We are fascinated by ghost stories whether we think the tall tales are hogwash, a source of comfort, or signs of an impressive machine (our body) shutting down and powering off. In the spirit of Halloween, I offer up this professional insight from the underworld: what is it you’d like to see become a ghost in your life? Fall is the Celtic New Year so perhaps now is the time to consider letting go of a long-time grudge, unhealthy habit or painful personality trait that no longer serves you and the people you love. I have attended over 10,000 funerals in my lifetime and there’s one thing I have come to know for sure: the only ghosts attending a funeral are the floating regrets, real and imagined, generated by the people gathered to grieve and mourn the deceased. What’s beautiful – and yes, at times has brought me to tears – is to see a person relieved of those regrets by the end of the funeral service. I don’t know what touches that person, cures that one individual or entire family of their heavy burden but if I could bottle the healing magic, I would. 12

Perhaps the powerful elixir present during a funeral, celebration of life or memorial service is like an invisible, benevolent and ghostly guest in the room. We cannot see love, joy, peace and belonging. Yet all of us believe in these powerful invisible forces. We have seen first-hand what love in all its guises can create and cure. Love always brings us together, especially when we are in pain and feeling lost and broken open. Beautiful feelings and comforting memories make themselves known whenever we need supernatural strength and ask for a deep inner knowing that we are loved and never ever alone. Brad Jones has been a funeral director for over 25 years and runs commission-free Ridley Funeral Home (3080 Lake Shore Blvd., across from Humber College) in Etobicoke.
