HISTORY // LONG BRANCH REAL ESTATE, CIRCA

STOP 26. How one single Colonel built “Come and join us on Thanksgiving ‘healthy’ homes in over half of Long Day Oct. 31, 1910 at PINE BEACH Branch. STOP 26 on the trolley line” Imagine that you’ve just finished a hearty breakfast with rolled oats, poached eggs, Canadian bacon, rye toast and apple juice. Now with a freshly ground cup of coffee you sit down to read a crisp edition of The Toronto Star. Amongst the headlines, local sports results, feature attractions at the Shea, Pantages, and Winter Gardens theatres and not to mention the society page, you spot an inviting advertisement. “Health Excursion for Home Seekers” You read more... the tang of pines, cool and fresh breezes from the lake, gracious 50 foot treed lots on undulating roads, gentle sloping landscape, “like Muskoka at your doorstep” and “perfect health insurance” quote some of the new patrons. 10

(Note: Halloween wasn’t a celebration yet and the Thanksgiving date floated.) “Take the Mimico trolley from Sunnyside and exit at Stop 26 (now 28th and Lake Shore Blvd. W) and enter through the electric lit gates of Pine Beach. Just stop and take-in the fresh air for 5 mins,” continues the ad. In fact, the entire sales campaign for the Long Branch developments focused on the ‘Health Benefit Factor’. During the 1910’s, Toronto was experiencing a building boom. Everything from The Royal Ontario Museum, Casa Loma, banks, breweries, factories, and new EATON stores, to new homes and grand residences were being built. Long Branch was no exception.

1910

Under the visionary real estate entrepreneurship of Colonel Frederick Burton Robins of Stroud Ont.,the first suburban commercial residential developments of Long Branch and by far the largest tract of repurposed land were realized. Robins’ first phase, complete with two model Colonial homes on 50 foot lush pine treed lots, electricity, and sewers; “PINE BEACH” (east of Long Branch Park, 31st to 27th Streets) were quickly spoken for. The second phase was ‘THE PINES’ (27th to 23rd) which began development in 1911, continuing under the ‘healthy community’ slogan. What was resourceful and intuitive about PINE BEACH’s curved road plan is that it was designed to sustain and showcase the abundant natural tree foliage, grass boulevards, and reduce the speed of vehicles for safety.” Cont’d on page 20

FORWARD // MAKE THE DECISION

MATTHEW DOUGLAS Pastor

“Matthew, you’re being suspended while we figure out what to do with you.” Robert Shuller has one of my favourite lines, “I’d rather attempt to do something great and fail than to attempt to do nothing and succeed.” It’s our decision to do something that determines our destiny. The reason we do not make progress towards our destiny is because we fail to make decisions. The result of our failure to make decisions is anxiety. The antidote to your anxiety is courage. You build courage by making a decision. There is something playing over and over in your mind and your way out of this is to decide to do something rather than nothing. That requires bravery. When I was told I was being suspended and possibly (likely) fired, I was in my 20’s, newly married with a job with responsibilities. I had tried to resolve a client’s problems by going outside of the normal conventions of the company. Now I’m facing being fired. I was so worried about my future and how to 12

keep my job. But the truth was the money was good but I HATED it. The job stole all my passion and I was empty inside. It was killing me. I realized how anxious I was because I hadn’t made a decision on doing what I needed to do. That event of being suspended was the catalyst for me to make a decision. I made a decision to change the direction of my life and to ultimately move towards my destiny. I now live my purpose by helping people find their gifts and talents to create beauty in the world. All because I found the courage to make a decision. What decisions do you need to make that would end your anxiousness and move you Forward? Bravery is required of you. Make the decision. I’m behind you!

WELLNESS // YOGA. SEASONAL SELF CARE.

Autumn is the time to send extra love to your body and yoga offers several easy ways to build a self-care routine and prepare for the colder months.

Sit on the floor with your hip against a wall, swing your legs up as you come to lay on your back. Rest here for 5 – 10 minutes.

Stimulate your precious lymphatic system with asana and literally wring toxins from your body. Without proper drainage we can suffer infected tonsils, sore throat, swelling, stiffness and slow healing. Set yourself up for a healthy winter with these few short steps.

Get Your Flow On

Twist It Out Massage the flow of lymphatic fluid to the core with Marichyasana III or Mariachi Pose. Start seated with your legs outstretched, bend one knee and bring the sole of the foot to the floor inside your thigh. On an exhale, twist toward the leg and wrap your opposite arm around your knee. Stay for 3 – 5 breaths.

Vinyasa contracts and releases the muscles and helps pump fluid through the body. Surya Namaskar or Sun Salutations get you flowing or try Kundalini Yoga. This incredibly active practice includes pranayama (breath work), to refresh and burn out toxins. Whatever you do this season, protect yourself by moving your body and remember to breathe.

All for a ‘healthier community’ and far superior to the standard crowded grid pattern that dominates Toronto’, cites Robins Ltd. in their real estate ads. In tandem with the southern Lakeshore development, Col. Robins bought up all the farmland between 32nd to 22nd Streets and developed them as Lakeshore Gardens in 1910 (22nd to 29th) and the Lakeshore Gardens Annex in 1911 (29th to 32nd). At 28 Daisy Avenue there sits the Gothic Revival Cottage of the late Richard and Lucy Newborn farm estate. Situated in the heart of the Lakeshore Gardens Annex, the fieldstone home now covered with stucco, was built in the late 1840’s. Today, the private residence is the oldest building in Long Branch and is protected by the Ontario Heritage Property Act. YOUR MONEY // IS THE BEAR WAKING UP? There has been a lot of good news around the markets as of late. We’ve enjoyed a secular Bull Market, and returns have been good. Since March 2009, we have seen the S&P/TSX up by 185% and the S&P 500 up 424%. We are currently looking at the longest Bull Market since WWII. It has been good for investors. LIFE’S UNDERTAKINGS // UGLY TRUTH BEHIND Being an elder once signified wisdom, respect and legacy. When grandparents visited, their stories commanded the room and silenced the dinner table. If you were admonished by an elderly person for being rude or impulsive, you felt shame and regret. In a culture that’s addicted to “anti-aging” and staying young and beautiful forever, funeral director Brad Jones wonders what is being lost when we view growing old and being dead as negotiable.

“Should you shield the valleys from the windstorms, you would never see the beauty of their canyons.” What grief researcher Elisabeth Kübler-Ross wrote about dying and death decades ago rings true when observing today’s escalating avoidance and denial around aging and beyond.

The circle of life has always included two non-negotiable forces: life’s beginning and life’s ending. ANTI-AGING

BRAD JONES

Growing older (and looking older) is not wrong and neither is death. There is no one or nothing to blame. Yes, aging can be cruel, heartless and insatiable. And then you have death, which doesn’t negotiate.

By aging gracefully, talking about death openly and honouring our old and dying, we show faith in a future that will not include us. Let us inspire appreciation in the youthfulness that follows us and shine a bright light as we exit life with maturity and grace.

COVER STORY // 1925 WORKBENCH

Sometimes a story is as much about the place as it is about the people. For 60 years, the N.A. Yorke Machine Co. was a family-owned business operating out of an otherwise unassuming building at 198 Thirtieth Street just south of Horner Ave., set amongst a mix of residential and other commercial properties. This building would became the backdrop for the local success story that is 1925 Workbench. Originally from Vietnam, Rock Huynh and My Le Nguyen both moved to Canada at a young age. My Le’s family settled in Long Branch, where she attended James S. Bell Junior Middle School and later Lakeshore Collegiate. The spark that inspired their business was ignited when the couple bought a tiny fixer-upper built in 1925 that needed, among other things, a barn 24

door. Given their respective passions (woodworking for Rock, art and design for My Le), the pair found themselves designing and building other items for their home, including furniture. In need of a new workshop, My Le and Rock were drawn to the old N.A. Yorke Machine Co. building in Alderwood; My Le’s childhood stomping ground. Using the back as a workshop, the front was eventually transformed into a showroom and studio. The business was aptly named, 1925 Workbench and My Le and Rock began designing and building custom barn doors and furniture for a growing clientelle. Their typical clients include designers and architects, as well as design-conscious homeowners. “Interior design is becoming more and more important to people,” explains My Le. “Our clients value having Cont’d on page 27

For My Le and Rock, sourcing local materials is very important. Most of their wood is from Ontario and their metal is sourced from different mills throughout Canada. “We value Canadian production tremendously and it is one of the big rea-

sons we continue to do what we do,” My Le explains.“We are very serious about keeping our products made in Canada.” The pair are excited about their patent for their single track bypass hardware that allows for two doors to slide bypassing on one track instead of the traditional two. The starting price for a standard size door (roughly 36” x 80”), hardware, and installation in the Toronto area is $2,000. ... 1925 WORKBENCH 198 Thirtieth Street My Le Nguyen: 647-859-0595 Rock Huynh: 416-878-1869 info@1925workbench.com Instagram: @1925workbench

Halloween is coming up and Christmas is right around the corner. Start the holiday season off right by making sure you are protected against the flu by getting your flu shot at your local Shoppers Drug Mart!

Now that autumn has arrived and the days are getting shorter, we tend to fall back into a more structured routine. Now is a good time to check on your goals, your achievements, and what your next steps are. We can start thinking this is “day one” or keep saying, “one day”.

Whether you’ve been in the area for years or are new to our little community, your pharmacy team is ready to help make sure you get vaccinated in the convenience of your own neighbourhood. Flu shots will be available towards the end of October, so give us a call or drop by to check on our availability.

We as Pharmacists can help you make that decision. Since it’s starting to get colder, it is best to ensure exercise is part of your routine. Once we have that in our schedule, we can move on to the next task. Reach out to neighbours, other parents from school, or a co-worker. Try to set up a day to go for a jog or even a walk with coffee. How do you feel after? Did it help with being on a healthier plan for the rest of the day? Did you sleep better that night? Have your choices changed in any way? If you answer yes to at least one of these questions, it was well worth it!
