REBECCA RILEY Hello, PNW Key Clubbers! I hope that you are geared up for a fantastic twelve months of Key Club service (or seven, if you’re a senior). Join me in considering your impact on the world as you make your resolutions for 2013. Happy New Year!

OUR DISTRICT PROJECT This year’s District Project is project:EDUCATE. The focus of this year’s District Project is the children and education in the country of Jamaica. Behind the beautiful beaches and tropical atmosphere is a world full of poverty and destitution. Our goal is to create a better future for the children of Jamaica through education, one school at a time. As a district, we have made our goal $30,000. We believe that education is the right of every child and with the help of the Jamaica District we can strive for success. project:EDUCATE became the first of its kind as a joint project between the Jamaica and Pacific Northwest Districts. GET INVOLVED! Get your members and club involved by fundraising for project:EDUCATE; anybody can join in and help support the schools in Jamaica. There are a variety of ways for your clubs to fundraise, such as t-shirts and wristbands. Each club has the opportunity to sell project:EDUCATE t-shirts ($15), as well as wristbands ($1) in order to gain support for the schools; please contact your Lieutenant Governor if you are interested in participating. Each shirt sold gets us closer to our goal of $30,000. Visit the project:EDUCATE blog and read 103 Ways to Fundraise in order to find more ways to fundraise.

“CHILDREN - THEIR FUTURE, OUR FOCUS”

MAJOR EMPHASIS

Since 1925, Key Club International has provided more than 12 million hours of service to homes, schools, and communities each year. From feeding the homeless, raising thousands of dollars for cancer research, and helping eliminate iodine deficiency disorder and now maternal and neonatal tetanus, Key Club International plays a vital role in serving the children of the world. Every Key Club has the authority to select its own service projects. However, beginning in 1946 at Key Club International’s first convention, Key Club International challenged all members to focus on creating a distinguished international impact. This program has prevailed and is still diligently followed today through the Major Emphasis: “Children: Their Future, Our Focus.” To fulfill the mission of the Major Emphasis Program(MEP), Key Club International serves children in many ways. By working with Key Club International’s partner organizations, Key Clubs serve children by aiding other

SIX

organizations committed to children. Members participate in the hands-on service initiative, currently The ELIMINATE Project, and fundraise for Key Club International’s partner organizations. Key Club International has benefited from the Major Emphasis Program by obtaining a more concrete mission to focus on the future of children through the support of four reputable international organizations, such as Children’s Miracle Network, March of Dimes and UNICEF. A Key Club’s participation in the MEP is not limited to only serving partner organizations. Participation in the program can be fulfilled when serving children by any means. Realizing the need and interest in supporting the MEP through hands-on service, a new service initiative is created on a two-year basis. All of the hands-on service provided to the children by Key Club International members can be directed to a single area of need to make a substantial impact. Through the Major Emphasis Program, many more hours of service will continue to be by Sydney Ledwith-Jensen

UNICEF “UNICEF? No I don’t know what that means, but it’s in blue and white letters right?” It’s hard to believe that just a little over a year ago, that was me. I had no idea what UNICEF was, never heard of it, and at that moment didn’t really care. This is hard to believe because I now introduce people to the whole website, when words fail me at explaining this amazing program . The United Nations Children’s Fund –aka UNICEF - was created in response of the emergency attention needed for children after World War 2. Thought to be a short term project, UNICEF is now

in 190 countries and territories and still going strong. Serving restlessly they are a role model to anyone, especially to a service group like Key Club. A few years ago Kiwanis and UNICEF teamed up to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. I personally feel inspired to work along with UNICEF for a better tomorrow, and maybe that’s what they are in a word; inspiring. MARCH OF DIMES All over Facebook, cute babies’ pictures of devoted Key Clubbers brings minds of curiosity from their friends and family of “why?” Well the answer to this is to expose their community to the non-profit organization March of Dimes. The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. The March of Dimes provides mothers with educational resources on baby health and pregnancy, as well as supplying information and support to families affected by prematurity, birth defects, or other infant health problems. As Key Clubbers, it’s our nature

to ask “What can we do to help?” Well there are so many ways to help this cause. The first step is to expose March of Dimes to the community by changing your profile to a baby picture. Attend March of Dimes events and purchase their gear. Then as Key Clubbers – fundraise, fundraise, and fundraise for the cause, which we all know comes natural for us Key Clubbers. Go to http://www.marchforbabies.org for more information! by Vy Nguyen - LT.G. Division 22/24

CHILDREN’S MIRACLE NETWORK Something special is needed to treat a sick child. Sometimes, it’s a soft touch or a simple smile. Sometimes, it’s laughter or a gentle embrace. But sometimes, other children need more. They need specialized and cutting edge equipment in addition exceptional doctors and nurses. They need Children’s Miracle Network(CMN). Thirty years ago, Children’s Miracle Network Hospital started just as a TV Show. Today, it’s the world’s leading children’s charitie, helping 170 millions kids everywhere! More than 500 corporations and media partners such as Coca- Cola, Chevron, IHOP, Kiwanis International, and more participate in huge campaigns and fundraisers that save millions of children. They also raise awareness of the children who need help by selling paper balloons in stores “one dollar at a time.” CMN also partnered up with TV and

radio stations to raise awareness and share the news of how their children are doing! Miracles are happening everyday, thanks to their professional caregivers. As a Key Clubber, you can support CMN in 4 steps. First, contact your local CMN hospitle and ask what your club can do to help. Is there a local event happening that you can volunteer or fundraise at? Second, if you want to fundraise, organize a quick social fundraiser such as a carwash event or bake sale! Third, get the word out to your school, local community and peers about this event. And lastly, have fun, connect, and celebrate with your CMN hospitle. Again, you can make a difference one step at a time. Go to childrensmiraclenetworkhospitals.org for more information! by Raegnar Bartolo - LT.G. Division 62

Mark your calendars for March 22nd - 24th, 2013! Pacific Northwest District Convention(DCON) 2013 is approaching faster than you may realize! The PNW District Board wants Key Club to experience the deeper meaning of service and dive into another great year with Key Club. Yes, you guessed it! The DCON theme for 2013 is Diving into Service! This is the time of year when members get to meet other Key Clubbers from the PNW, learn more about service projects, have the chance to show their divisional spirit, and elect the 2013-2014 District Board! Our District Convention Chair, Andy Nguyen, and the rest of the District Board are working hard to put together a great DCON (so you don’t want to miss out on this!). It is important for members to make sure to stay in contact with their Lieutenant Governors on whether they are on the right track to DCON. Communication within each division is very important in order to stay updated on DCON. We all appreciate our dedicated members and what better way to thank them for all their efforts than with an award! DCON is a great chance to recognize clubs for all the hard work that they put into Key Club. There are lots of awards that clubs can apply for. Don’t miss this opportunity to really thank your members for what they have done. Also, if clubs are interested in attending DCON in March, start fundraising now! District Convention is a month away, so plan ahead to make sure everything is prepared. Lastly, the Call to Convention video is out! So, get a sneak-peek into the whole experience by watching the PNW Call to Convention 2013 video (which is also on Youtube)! See you all at DCON! by Hakikat Bains - Lt.G Division 9

REGISTRATION Registration season is just around the corner, so that means it’s time to Dive into Service, once again, at the 64th annual Pacific Northwest DCON! This year’s Call to Convention packet included three sections: Sections A, B and C. Section A is the general registration, rules, and authorization forms; Section B is the candidates’ information and forms; and Section C covers all the information aon awards and recognitions. All materials for those attending must be submitted by February 5th, 2013; with the exception of a few awards. Once you have turned in your registration materials, you are now ready for DCON 2013! Once you arrive at the convention, your advisor will go up to the registration area and gather all the materials that will be given out to each of the attendees. The registration materials will include: the convention program, a candidates’ information guide, a lanyard, a drawstring bag, this year’s convention shirt, wrist bands, lanyards, as well as nametags. Good luck and we look forward to seeing you at DCON this year! by Nguyen Huynh - Lt.G Division 32

CAUCUSING

Every year this fantastic event comes, known as DCON. During this event, Key Clubbers participate in something known as caucusing. Caucusing is when members of Pacific Northwest elect the next Governor, District Secretary, District Treasurer, and District Editor for the following year to come. At DCON, Key Clubbers will be broken into their divisions and be placed into caucus rooms, where they will be able to listen to each and every candidate giving a 3-5 minute speech. This speech will include their goals, motives, and plans that they will undergo if elected into office. During this time, Key Clubbers will be able to ask questions that are appropriate for the candidates to answer. Once every candidate has had the chance to go through each caucusing room, delegates will then be able to vote for whomever they think will do the best job during the house of delegates. The winners will be announced at closeing session. Jason Stith - Lt.G Division 48

DCON SPIRIT What makes DCON the unbelievable, one of a kind, mind-blowing event that it is? One word- spirit. It’s safe to say that Key Clubbers have spirit like no other. They are crazy about service, and proud of it! During DCON, the famous Key Club chant takes center stage as hundreds of key clubbers tell the world how they feel. Also, masses of colors are all over the place; each member representing their mascot, divisional color and divisional number. If they want to go above and beyond, they dress up according to the DCON theme. This year’s theme is ‘Diving into Service’, meaning beach wear, sunshine, and water- be creative! DCON is an event full of hype, chants, screaming, and fun. Get ready to dive into service, and don’t forget your spirit! by Trang Tran - Lt.G Division 34

“HELPING KEY CLUBBERS SERVE THE WORLD”

YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES FUND APPLY by OCTOBER

by Raegnar Bartolo - Lt.G Division 62

15TH!

WIN THE GRANT!

SERVE YOUR WORLD!

Over a three-year period, Brockton Key Club constructed a “fun-haven” for Elden B. Keith Elementary School. The Youth Opportunities Fund (Y.O.F.) made this “fun-haven” possible, an endowed fund for Key Club International held within the Kiwanis International Fund. This program utilizes earned interests to help Key Clubs to serve and make a difference in their community. As a great example, aspiring and innovative Brockton Key Club members initiated a project to construct a playground in their local elementary school. The Y.O.F. also rewards Key Club members with academic scholarships. To apply, a simple fillable application form needs to be postmarked by October 15th every year. It asks what the identified challenges are in your community and your passionate solution to them. However, if you missed the deadline this year, no worries, prepare for next year! Talk to your community leaders, Key Club officers and/or school administrators to take action!

PORTLAND AREA RALLY 2012 Portland Area Rally was held on June 16th, 2012 this year at Lake Oswego High School. With over 80 people in attendance, it was definitely a memorable day filled with spirit, dancing, and of course Key Club! The sun decided to finally make a surprise visit with us that day which was perfect for the theme this year: Service Under the Sun. From the tropical beachthemed decorations in the auditorium to the enthusiastic Key Clubbers dressed from head to toe in Hawaiian attire, the event was a nice conclusion to the end of the school year while being a kick-start for the beginning of summer. The opening, general, and closing sessions were a success due to our wonderful guest speaker, John Brookens from KDCCP, who spoke about the impact Kiwanis and Key Club have on the prevention and treatment of cancer. Our powerful Portland area divisions were able to raise money for the Eliminate Project, with our amzing advisors and adults who were helping us along the way. All in all, Portland Area Rally 2012 was an exciting day that made us truly appreciate Key Club and everything it stands for.

CANADA RALLY 2012 On August 16th, 2012 at UBC the Canadian Rally started off with opening session. There were introductions to the District Board guests, a message from Governor Giovanni Mckenzie, and an Eliminate video presentation. The informative workshops then took place. By twelve o’clock, lunch arrived; Key Clubbers were asked “How do you feel?!” to determine who ate first. By the end of the day everyone learned something about Key Club and perhaps even some Kenneth Lam dance moves! We reconvened with a service project for Project Educate. We created bracelets to distribute to the Jamaican elementary students to motivate them to continue their education. During closing session, Key Clubbers showed off their talent with a poetry recital by Claremont’s Jesse and Marc and a dance performance from Pinetree’s Yoona and Alice. Congratulations to VanTech for winning the spirit stick and everyone for raising $120 for Project Educate. The miracle minute earned us dance moves performed by Governor Giovanni, President Kathy, and LtGs Jennifer and Eli! See you next year with even more enthusiasm!

DIVISIONAL SPOTLIGHT On October 21st, I hosted an induction dinner for Division 66. It was quite successful; I had over a hundred attendees. However, the most awesome thing we did that night was raise $202 for project:EDUCATE during one Miracle Minute. After explaining details of the project, I reminded everyone that while Jamaica may be far out of our reach, we could still do something to enhance their education system. As Key Club affiliates, we owe it to ourselves to help children from all around the world.

When the mirical minute was up, Oregon City High School’s club treasurer, Sinjin White-Juker, volunteered to pick up the money and add up the sum amount. When all was said and done, Corbett High School’s small table raised $54 in one minute! All together, the room provided the rest of the $202. Never had I been so proud of my division to come together and make a difference in just one minute. It was beautiful. by Sydney Ledwith-Jensen Lt.G Division 66
