Last year, everything was looking up for the Whitworth family of Polson, Montana. Cole was getting ready to start kindergarten. In an instant, while on vacation in Spokane, their lives changed forever. “…Cole was playing with his siblings Alyssa and Cadence. He fell down and, when I saw his face, I knew something was really wrong…the left side of his face was frozen. I thought he’d had a stroke,” Cole’s mom, Cecile recalls. Two hours later, doctors at Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital gave the news that no parent is ever prepared to hear. Cole had a malignant brain tumor and needed surgery. Doctors prepared Cecile and her husband for the worst. They warned them that their son might
not be able to walk or speak after the surgery and that his personality could change. Despite the initial relief of a successful surgery, there remained a long road ahead. After two and a half weeks in the Intensive Care Unit, Cole went home for his sixth birthday. But the family knew that after the New Year, the long battle with cancer would resume. Cole was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, which meant over a year of chemotherapy and radiation. “I remember just thinking ‘how are we ever going to do this’?” recalls Cecile. “Our social worker Maggie told me about the Ronald McDonald House.” Upon returning to Spokane, the House was full. Cecile and Cole spent ten days on the waiting list. “It was so hard,” Cecile admits. “There was one night when…all Cole wanted was mac and cheese. We were in the hotel so I couldn’t

make it for him… I just felt terrible.” All that changed when a room opened up at the House. “Having laundry, a kitchen, play areas for Cole…has made all of the difference,” says Cecile. Recently, Cole received good news. An MRI revealed there is no sign of disease left. “We’ve gone through five out of eight rounds of chemo, and the doctors have given Cole an eighty percent chance of recovery. We hope that the worst is behind us,” Cecile says with a smile. The journey has been arduous, not only for Cole, but for Cecile and the rest of their family as well. “I could never have imagined my life before this… I have a sixteen-year-old-daughter and an eleven-year-old son back home…But you have something happen and as a mother you just have to be strong and go through it with your child... Something happens to your family and you think it’s going to destroy you, but there’s always hope.” she says, “And there’s good people to help you along the

Mild Recurrent Colic Dr. Jed McKinlay, McKinlay Peters Equine Hospital
The two main things we think about in our area when horses exhibit signs of mild recurrent colic (abdominal pain) are sand ingestion or stomach ulcerations. This is, by no means, an exhaustive list. Another interesting cause is fecoliths or intestinal stones which occur more commonly in desert climates. Let’s talk about sand ingestion. Why would a horse eat sand? The answers can be many and varied. Some possibilities include: hay Dr. Jed McKinlay McKinlay Peters Equine Hospital that has been put up with a lot of dirt, sand or gravel in it (a single bale can even be a problem), horses that are fed on top of sandy ground, individual horses that vacuum the ground for every last morsel of feed, horses that are fed on overgrazed pastures, etc. Many of us have probably witnessed our horses with sand or dirt on their muzzles. At times it seems like these bouts of abdominal pain occur all of a sudden or acutely. Perhaps more often they occur with gradual ingestion and accumulation of sand over long periods of time. Horses are able to pass much of the sand, dirt and gravel they inadvertently ingest, but due to the weight of the material, a percentage of it gravitates to the bottom of the large colon and just sits there. At first the stuff is not too bothersome, but like the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back, it eventually becomes heavy and irritating enough to cause pain. Or, the sand may become voluminous enough so as to restrict the flow of normal ingesta as it tries to move through the large intestine, acting like a clog in a drain. There are a couple of common ways to diagnose sand colic. One is the characteristic sound the sand makes as it sloshes back and forth with the movement of the large intestine. Through the stethoscope it sounds like waves washing on the beach or like holding your ear up to a sea shell. The other easy way to detect it is to put a few fecal balls into a zip lock bag, fill it with water, zip the bag shut, shake it to make a slurry and look to see how much sand accumulates at the bottom of the bag. Any amount can be deleterious. The more there is, the worse the case might be. Remember, sand is heavier than the rest of what makes up the manure so it will sink the fastest. It’s a little like panning for gold for those of you who are familiar with that experience. So, what do we do for horses that accumulate sand in the gut and what are the potential outcomes? And, can it be prevented? Most of the horses we see with abdominal pain of this nature are in mild to moderate discomfort, though it can be severe. Treatment is based on controlling the pain and doing all we can to eliminate the cause of the pain...the sand.
Pain control is often accomplished in a similar manner to any abdominal crisis with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (flunixin meglimine), sedatives, anti-spasmodic drugs, and other (narcotic) analgesics. Walking and trailer rides may also be useful. Removing the sand can be accomplished via drenching with mineral oil, psyllium drenching, intravenous and oral fluid therapy, and in the worst cases surgery. Usually only horses with severe blockages or twists in the bowel associated with rolling require surgical intervention. Preventative measures may include frequent oral feeding of psyllium, and many management factors that reduce the likelihood of horses ingesting sand. Buying clean hay, not feeding on top of sandy soils, the use of muzzles when horses are turned out and so forth are a few of those ideas. Potential outcomes vary considerably in relation to the severity of the sand accumulation and the clinical presentation. Some may require only minor pain management and a single dose of oil and pysllium. Others require more long term and intensive medical care. And, as has been mentioned the worst cases may require surgery. Critical to the outcome is early recognition of the problem and early and aggressive treatment. Cases that are nipped in the bud have the best outcomes. Horses who are in severe, prolonged pain prior to veterinary intervention tend to have the most guarded prognosis. Keys are early recognition and appropriate veterinary care. We sincerely hope you never have to deal with this problem and that the knowledge in this essay may be of some help to you if you do! Ann Kirk What’s So Great About the Round Pen? Happy New Year! January 2014 is here and winter is in full swing. I am looking forward to another year of doing clinics, training horses, giving lessons and spending time with lots of friends and new acquaintances. I meet several new people and horses each year and I am constantly amazed at how many of both lack the very basics in their knowledge and training. It is sad to me that so many people get hurt each year when many accidents are preventable. The majority of problems can be traced back to the steps taken, (or not taken), to lay the ground-work upon which everything else is built. I would like to share some thoughts about the foundation I use to build a working relationship with almost every horse I train or retrain; the basic round-pen lesson patterned from the John Lyons Method. Every horse, regardless of their level of training, can benefit greatly from this basic round-pen lesson. If a horse comes to me that is very gentle, well behaved with respect to leading, standing tied, being caught, being haltered or bridled, etc., I may not do this lesson with them depending on what the owner and I have discussed. But usually, if the horse is coming to my place, it is because there is a problem or they are ready to become a riding horse. Whatever the case, this lesson is the starting point I use for establishing control and leadership. It is a way for me to rapidly gain the horse’s attention and trust without focusing on negative behaviors.
The round-pen gives me a way to evaluate the horse’s temperament, its way of going, willingness to follow, amount of emotional control, attention span, trust level.....the list is endless. Oftentimes, the behavior that is viewed as the problem is no more than a symptom of a foundational step that has been missed in the horse’s initial training. And also realize, if you have a horse on a halter and lead line, (long or short) that horse also has you! The roundpen allows me to control the horse without being connected to a thousand pound animal that can hurt me. In most cases, no force is needed to establish the pecking order and get the horse willing to follow my lead. And what about the horse? What are the benefits for it? Remember, horses are prey animals and pecking order specialists. So the round-pen gives me a way to use their language to teach them what I expect. For self-preservation reasons, as seen with the fight-flight response, horses will respond with their body first and their mind second. In the round-pen, I can control the flight response while all the while

helping the horse develop the mental response I desire. The process allows the horse to think on his own without any assistance from devices. The horse will benefit when he has to think through the logic as to why he is making a particular move. Round-pen training will put more of a demand on the horse because he has to learn to control his emotional responses and use his mental abilities to get a release from pressure and movement. With practice, he will learn to think, wait for a cue, then move. You can teach your horse to spook in place or to turn and face what frightens him instead of running away. If you only get a brief warning, it is often enough for you to get the proper control to guide him through the scare and avoid a wreck. In time, this will replace his natural response to take off when he encounters changes in his environment. When a horse learns to control his own instinctual responses, you are much safer and he is much calmer. You are not at the mercy of his instincts, hoping to control him by having just the right contact on just the right bit at all times. I can assure you, you cannot control a frightened horse with any bit or halter on the market. It is best to teach them how to control themselves. If you do use lead ropes, lunge lines, long lines, etc. to start your horse, you can get the similar results, but I find it takes longer and is never quite as solid. If the horse decides to take off and you stop his action with the line, the line itself controls the feet, not the horse’s mind. When you leave the horse free, the horse learns for himself how to use his own thought process to control his emotions and movements. I do
not want to take this opportunity away. The lessons will become more ingrained and permanent as the horse figures out the answers for himself. Having figured it out for himself, the horse will remember it longer. I have done 1/2 hour lessons with young foals just to teach them to be caught properly and had them fully remember within 5 minutes as 3 year olds… it is amazing! I have found that after I have completed the round-pen basics, when I do go back to the halter and line, the horse will learn much faster than if I had not started with these techniques. And I get the added bonus of the horse turning to face me and being easy to catch for the rest of their stay at my facility. I cannot stress enough the importance of laying a solid foundation that the horse understands and that you can fall back on when you need more control on your horse. The few horses I don’t do this lesson on are few and far between as it only takes 1 day of working with a horse that has not had this lesson to see the hole in our level of understanding and communication with each other. ven here in the Inland Northwest mud can be a significant problem. Water run-off can easily be polluted by farm waste and the water table is always at risk. Mud can be deep in feeding areas, around water troughs, gates, and gathering areas making access to these places difficult and dangerous for both humans and animals alike. When caked on legs, mud makes it difficult to notice and to care for injuries and infections of the skin and feet. For all these reasons, mud management should be a normal part of our farm management practices. How do we go about creating mud free zones or rehabilitating areas that are consistently muddy already? Step 1: Locate areas that have the potential to become or a history of being muddy during our rainy time of year. Step 2: Research different ways of handling rain, water and mud by getting online. Many sites are available that show ways of grading, stabilizing, draining and restructuring ground to prevent the development of mud. Contact the WSU Extension Service and the local department of Ecology for more information or to find out more about organizations that can tell you about watershed protection. Attend a watershed protection or mud management workshop. Step 3: Contact a local gravel company and discuss your project with the contractor. They may be able to recommend an excavation contractor to help you grade your site, install drainage and add fill rock to areas that are problematic. We worked with Action Materials and Alpine Excavation in Cheney on our project. Step 4: Begin your work before the muddy season begins. Preparation before the mud makes it much easier to do the work. For the “do-it-yourselfer� the steps might take you longer, but if you remember certain things, you can have a very successful result. Remember: Topsoil is full of organic matter. Organic matter is what makes mud so try to remove the layer of topsoil before you start throwing expensive gravel at the project. We have all had the experience of adding gravel fill only to have it walked on and “sink� into the ground and have to be added again the next year. Scraping the ground down to firm substrate as you

grade your site will be well worth it in the end. Water runs downhill. Shocking how many people forget this. You do not need a big grade, but try to get the ground to slope away from buildings, troughs, and areas animals congregate. It can be helpful to install a drain, either a French drain or a curtain drain to capture the run-off. If these solutions are recommended for your application, you may also need a dry well. Consult with an excavation contractor to see what will work best in your situation. Stabilize the substrate with rock where necessary. Big, angular rock works best for stabilizing large sections of ground that can become soft and mushy, turning into mud when hoof traffic churns it up. “Pit run� is a popular choice for this but should be covered with other material as it can have edges.

Use a dividing layer between the stabilized ground and the new gravel you are bringing in. There are several kinds of landscaping fabrics for various applications. Consult with a professional before you choose the type and weight of fabric for your project. The importance of this layer cannot be Using the rented plate compactor overstated. It is this layer that will keep your gravel from being absorbed by the substrate. Many people do not like landscape fabrics for use in livestock situations as it can be pulled up by the animals. However, if proper boundaries are put around these areas (like railroad ties) and if the layer of material being used over it is deep enough, this should not happen. Many materials can be used for this from second hand rubber belting to old carpet but your results will vary. Choose whether or not you will need a polymer based grid of some kind to contain your next layer. There are several new grid systems that are designed to create a very solid base for your gravel and promise to add years of longevity to the successful mud management system. We chose “Lightfoot Paddock Stabilizing Panels” for ease of installation, economy and overall size. We have two areas 40’x130’ so the 6’x12’ Lightfoot panel was the best choice for us. “Eco-Grid” and several other manufactured polymer based stabilizing systems are available and you will have to choose which is best for your application. Cover the landscape fabric/polymer grid with 1/4” or 3/8” minus angular aggregate (“road base” or asphalt grindings can be used) and use a compactor to achieve a high level of compaction of this layer. Do not use round rock, drainage material, topsoil or sand as they will not compact. This layer may be four compacted inches deep or more, but do not scrimp! You can rent a plate compactor for small areas or a drum roller for larger areas like paddock, round pen or outdoor arena foundations. The vibrating drum roller used on our project created an even almost concrete-like surface over which we placed our footing. It is possible to stop here but know that this expensive layer of material will be removed over time by “erosive evacuation” (cleaning), damaged by pawing and pocking from hooves,

and become the depository for manure and livestock waste. Many people choose to put another layer on top of this compacted layer. I have seen everything from larger gravel to Layers of Gravel, Paper, Lightfoot & more Gravel sand to hog fuel used for this. Remember, this layer protects your expensive rock base and is designed to be removed with cleaning and so must be replaced over time. We chose hog fuel as our cover as it ends up in the compost system and is broken down with other waste. Some swear by sand as it is easy to sift but whatever you use, make sure it is inexpensive, safe for feet and easy to clean. Once your mud free zone is established, there is only one thing that will keep it that way – regular maintenance! Organic material must be cleaned up and properly disposed of. Manure, hay and feed waste will become mud over time and you will have the same problem you had before over the top of your hard work. Clean up spilled, spoiled hay or use a feeder that limits waste like a box feeder to keep hay waste to a minimum and to keep it from being broken down into the elements that make mud. Clean up manure regularly to Finished gravel pad ready for fences & footing maintain the animal’s environment and to reduce the risk of livestock pollutants contaminating both above and below ground water sources. Properly compost manure or have a landscape company remove the manure pile for you. While it may seem like a lot of work, creating mud free zones is better for you, better for your animals and better for the environment.

What a beautiful winter day, and then I heard the sounds of commotion coming from behind the barn! Big whinny, little whinny, big whinny, little whinny ... then silence. I glanced quickly at the new mini pen that we had just completed with its cute little mini house and realized that there was not a mini to be seen! I had bought two Miniature Horses thinking that they would be the perfect size to introduce my two little grandsons to the horse world. But the minis weren’t technologically correct, certainly didn’t operate very well with a remote control nor did they have guns, blasters or general noise makers attached! One quick mini look and the grandsons gave me the… that’sgreat-Grammy-but-now-we’re-headed-for-real-toys look and off they went with never a backward mini glance. Meanwhile the two white, blue eyed little darlin’s stole MY heart! Minnie Pearl, the mini-mare, and Sonny Blue, the mini-man yearling, were my summer companions and ranch greeters. There was many a little GIRL who would gladly have taken them home! But now the minis had disappeared! Big and little whinnies were again coming from behind the barn. Commander, my big white perlino stallion was back there! I raced around the barn corner and stopped dead in my tracks. There was Commander, with his head held high, scanning
the mare pastures and every once in awhile letting out with a loud stallion mating call. Oh yeah, I’d almost forgot, spring breeding times were just around the corner. At Commander’s feet, just outside his corral, stood two little white minis. Mini Pearl had the look of love in her blue eyes. She was star struck, as she stared up at the big, white, Lone Ranger of a stallion in front of her. Mini-man was doing his best to convince her he was a better companion for her. Since he is a gelding, the whole mating drive thing was kind of a mystery to him. When he was in to be gelded the vet and I laughed, my big tomcat, in for the same procedure, had bigger ones removed than mini-man did! “Commander, look down!” I said,” The mare you’re hearing is below you. Besides that, she isn’t quite you’re... well, she isn’t quite your type!” Commander glanced at me, looked down surprised at mini-mare, back at me, back at mini-mare and then in a very controlled voice said. “My, what a sweet little mare package.” “Commander! Don’t even THINK about it!” At least when you have a stallion that talks you know right away what is on his mind! As if there isn’t just one thing that is always at the front of any stallion’s mind! Mini-mare in the meantime was not helping matters. She

uttered little adoring whinnies interspersed with excited squeals that sounded just like a teenage girl at a rock concert. Stallions and men, mares and girls, after having a breeding horse herd for many years I’ve decided that we really aren’t that far removed from the animal kingdom! Mini-man had lost interest and was quietly munching some hay off to the side. You just got to love geldings! “So little missy, how old are you?” Commander had suave just dripping off his tongue as he regarded the little mare in front of him. “She’s 3 and full grown at 32 inches! Commander, put your tongue back in your mouth!” I stormed. “Hmmmmm, she’s old enough...” Commander was not even looking at me. This was as close to any mare as he had been since last breeding season. Last year he had bred several 16 plus hand Appaloosa mares that were a challenging height from a different perspective! But this, this mini-mare was out of the question!!! “Commander! Wipe that smirk off your face, this is not going to happen! Look how tiny she is.” This was accompanied by another big shriek from mini-mare. My gosh she has a loud voice for how small she is! Miniature horses have become very popular in the US as pets, companions and small show horses. Standing not more than 34 inches at the shoulder, they have many of the characteristics of big horses but in a small, manageable size. Minis have curious, affectionate personalities and come in a variety of colors. They require the same maintenance as larger
horses but a whole lot less feed! As I gazed affectionately at my mini blue eyed wonders, I thought maybe I was being too harsh on the big white stallion that held such a special place in my horse heart. Perhaps I had better point out the issue a little more specifically since his blue eyes were glazed over with mini lust and maybe he just didn’t understand the logistics of the matter. “So Commander do you see what I mean about Minnie Pearl being too small for you to really consider her a good breeding companion? Why you’d have to get down on your knees to make it work.” I said gently, trying to sweetly bring him back to earth and not go into too much detail about big and little sizes. Commander gave me a big horse grin, whirled around and headed for the barn. Relieved that the issue was over, I called after him to see where he was going? Giving Your Mustang Purpose by Steve Rother • Excel With Horses Mustangs, like all horses, thrive when they have a purpose. When they are straight out of the wild it is fairly easy to keep them curious and engaged. However, once they are gentled they can become bored with their day-to-day routine, especially if it lacks purpose. Purpose plays a key role in maintaining the valuable traits of any breed horse. When I ask people how far they live from where they work, and if there is a hitching rail, they tend to look at me with a “you can’t be serious” look. However, If you could take the things that you already have with your horse and just add some purpose, you might just be amazed at the difference. In fact, so much so, that you might never want to go back to the “average” things you have been getting from your horse. Horses are much like us. If they have a purpose for doing something that you are training them for, they tend to perk up. If you are just planning another mindless circle, they can get cranky and dull. This cranky and dull feeling is never fun, but some people just put up with it. They may contribute it to a poor fitting saddle, a mineral deficiency, or the person that trained the horse. Although these things are important, they are missing a huge ingredient: Purpose. Most people don’t want to over “train” or “drill”, but they don’t seem to mind boring their horse. In the end this causes a worse situation than if they had “drilled” their horse. At the end of the day, it is very important for your horse to be able to answer an
important question, WHY? “Principles are the foundation, but purpose creates the passion.” Recently I had a clinic participant that was struggling continuously with her mare. Every time she would ask her horse to do something the mare would reply, “make me”. I could tell that the owner was getting frustrated, so I asked her to try it on one of my horses; a work horse who at one time was a wild horse roaming in the desert. The mare immediately focused on her new handler and said, “how fast, and how far”? The client was amazed. With this new feel, all of my words started to have more meaning. She started to understand why it was so important to not only go through the exercises, but to give them a purpose. Both of these horses were actually at similar places in their training, the main difference was that her mare was a retired show horse that had lost her try. My horse was a retired clinic horse that had only ever been ridden for a job. The main difference between these horses was just purpose. realized that some people actually enjoyed flying. “We can’t have that!” cried the Wicked Witch of the Turbulence. So they started charging to check a bag, $25-$50 each way. I NEVER CHECK MY BAG! This forced travelers to try and put all their baggage in the roomy overhead space (a design flaw the airlines realized too late). I predict soon they will start charging for all bags put anywhere. It will follow with a charge for your ID, the change in your pocket, your shoes and the book or newspaper you bring on board. There will then become a surcharge on thick socks, hats, coats and laptops. I DON’T HAVE A LAPTOP! Eventually seats will become optional. Most will ride in the baggage section. BUT, I DON’T CARE! I will take all the abuse they throw at me. And it will get worse. The more mergers, the tighter the seating, the less selection…I can envision a flight attendant with rubber gloves and an eyedropper walking down the aisle feeding those passengers who sit up straight, tip their heads back like baby robins, and are given exactly 3 ounces of a choice of red, yellow or green flavored chemical. I have 350,000 flight miles on one of the big airlines but since I didn’t make the cut this year I am assigned the seat across from the toilet with blue water and board in Zone 14. YOU CAN’T INTIMIDATE ME. I have watched the boarding procedure change over the years with no obvious logic. They used to allow those who sat furthest back to board first. Now it appears that they select seats by drawing numbers like a bingo game. It makes you wince to watch the process. The dainty, the frightened, the linebacker coming down the aisle, the homeless person pushing a shopping cart, the person who is bringing her harp on board, the multitude trying to stuff turkey dinners, a cavalry saddle, and a 12-foot fly rod into the overhead. They could take a lesson from any cattle hauler. He loads the ones getting off last in the front of the trailer next to the cab. Duh. Too complicated I guess. I’LL SIT ANYWHERE. GIVE ME THE MIDDLE SEAT BETWEEN TWO SUMO WRESTLERS! I understand they are considering allowing cell phone service during the flight. I can predict multiple felonies, frenzied savaging, wall climbing and at least one WWE RAW RASSLING ATTACK every time a tinging dinging ringtone chimes in.
