VOLUNTEERS NEEDED At MSHH Donor Closet in Spokane. Retail help, delivery & pickups (vehicle supplied, must have clean DL & record), restoring & cleaning donated medical equipment. We are 100% volunteer based. We sell inexpensive medical & mobility equipment & donate the proceeds to people living with multiple sclerosis who need financial help. Call 509‑487‑4119. 3203 N. Market, Spokane WHO WILL PRAY? Why pray? That is an important question. To pray is to ask. Many pray to receive something of God, & they are all the time wanting something that is not in line with His will. Others pray to false Gods that cannot help. The God of the bible declares, “Is there a God beside Me? I know not any” & “I am the Lord (Jehovah), & there is none else, there is no God beside Me.” When we ask something of God, we first must be in obedience to Him & second, must ask according to His will. “& this is the confidence that we have in Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.” “Now we know that God will not hear sinners (those who break his laws), but if any person be a worshipper of God & does His will, them He hears.” Keep in mind God says that He hears the cry of those who are afflicted. May you be encouraged in obedience to Jesus Christ, who is the Son of God, & Pray for His will to be done on Earth. To know more, read the Holy Bible & may God bless you with “The Truth”. We can be reached at 509‑879‑1932; a great resource is www.sfmiusa.org (Paid Advertisement)

Introduce Ample Lighting

Make a Singular Statement For a bolder look, the best approach may actually be quite simple. Use a single material throughout the room for big impact. For example, run the same tile you select for the floor up the walls, across the vanity, around the shower and up to the ceiling. It’s a dramatic approach, but with the right color and pattern, it can work, especially with a pale or neutral tone. The same concept applies to other materials, such as plaster or concrete, which can create a uniform look that makes a statement. Try a Timeless Tub Freestanding tubs were once associated with older, outdated homes, but like many things in design, these stand-alone vessels are once more back in vogue. Today’s freestanding tubs offer tons of style to fit nearly any design motif. If the claw-foot style of yesteryear is your thing, there are plenty of contemporary takes on the look for an updated, traditional bathroom. There are also a wide range of sleek styles that look nothing like the classic version for a completely fresh, sophisticated bath. Give your tub extra star power by setting it against a backdrop of tile or reclaimed wood, and punch up the style with standout fixtures to make your tub a truly unique feature of the bathroom.

Take a look at today’s trending bathroom designs and you’ll see floating vanities cover the pages of most design magazines and articles. Floating vanities, also known as wall-mounted vanities, mount directly to the wall, providing more floor space and creating a streamlined look.

If you think of bathroom fixtures as purely functional, think again. Not only can they add a stylish focal point to your tub (and shower and sink, for that matter), the ultra-practical fixtures can actually be a source of color. Bold brass and gold tones are in style, or for something completely different, explore a new look like solid black fixtures that pop against several different textures and surfaces.

(Family Features) Bringing an outdated bathroom into the now is a sure way to infuse value and personal enjoyment into your home.

By mounting the vanity to a wall, the space is broadened, naturally making the bathroom look and feel larger. Additionally, the wall mount allows homeowners to customize the space in terms of countertop height and comfort. Although the aesthetic benefits often come at the cost of limited under-sink storage space, this potential pitfall can be overcome with a customizable U-shaped drawer option, such as those offered by Wellborn Cabinet, that allows functional

Sub-optimal lighting can hamper the ambiance of smaller spaces like bathrooms. If the space has a window, ditch any coverings that restrict the natural light and instead rely on textured glass windows that provide privacy while allowing light to shine freely. Another option is a skylight, which is surprisingly easy to add. If access to the roofline is an issue, consider one (or even a couple) tunnel skylights. Also give care to selecting the right fixtures for the space. Not only should they coordinate well with the overall decor, they should provide plenty of task and ambient lighting to make the room both useful and inviting. Trick Your Way to a Bigger Bathroom When knocking down walls to create more space isn’t an option, there are still plenty of ways you can maximize a small bathroom space to make it look and feel larger than it really is. Opt for monochromatic cabinetry. Whether you buy new or paint existing cabinets, make them blend in monochromatically in the lightest shade possible. White and light colors reflect light, making the room seem brighter and more spacious. To maximize the illusion, extend the monochromatic scheme throughout the space, including floor tiles, wall paint, ceilings and even the decorations. Place cabinets strategically. Think of the spaces in your bathroom that you don’t usually use, such as the area above the doorway. Especially if you have high ceilings, you can install decorative storage shelves to house items you don’t need in everyday reach like bathtub salts, scrubs and more. You can also use the shelves for storing extra toilet paper and cleaners to free up valuable storage space below the sink. Maximize vertical space. Consider extending cabinetry up to the ceiling. Adding color at a vertical height can cause the eye to go up and therefore enlarge the bathroom space and feel. It is also a wise use of unused space rather than borrowing from limited floor space, which can make the space feel cramped. Consider open storage. Open storage shelves trick the mind because the airy openness can give the illusion of taking less space than enclosed storage. However, be mindful of over-filling shelves, which can create a cluttered look. Instead use the open space as an opportunity to feature artwork or other accents that add life to the room. the Exchange • 509-922-3456

PETS & LIVESTOCK

CAT OF THE WEEK Mr. Cat (40243580) is a bold and curious cat who loves to be the center of attention. He can get overstimulated and start to play rough sometimes, so please let him approach you! Being confined and changing environments tends to scare him a lot, so give him plenty of time to adjust to his new home. Please ask staff about Mr. Cat today! For this or many other wonderful pets available for adoption, please contact the Spokane Humane Society at 509-467-5236 or visit our website at www.spokanehumanesociety.org/adopt.

PLEASE SPAY OR NEUTER YOUR PETS! THE EXCHANGE HAS THE RIGHT To refuse any ads if mistreatment, abuse of animals or otherwise harmful situations to the animals health or well being is reported or suspected

In this letter I hope to describe from my heart what a dog would mean to me. In 2005 I came back from deployment in Iraq. Since then I have had some issues with (PTSD). Overall I could still lead a pretty normal life as long as I stayed busy with school and work. Back in 2014 as a member of the Army National Guard my unit was mobilized to help with the recovery of victims that died in the mudslide in Oso, Washington. Since then my life has become very difficult on a consistent basis. I not only developed symptoms of PTSD related to the natural disaster, but the war related trauma I thought I had worked through returned. I could no longer work as a pastor, and I had to be medically retired from the military ending my career as a chaplain. My world has shrunk due to flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, hallucinations, panic attacks, nightmares, depression, and anxiety that plague me every day. There is a war in my head all the time. Many times when these symptoms get really bad, I need to be by myself. Neither my wife nor two kids can bring me peace or comfort in those moments. Three and a half years of treatment and I have only gotten worse.

Joe, the opportunity to get a dog has given me hope on three levels. First, I would have a companion that could be with me at all times. I would have another living being to be near at times when I cannot be around others. The dog would bring me comfort in a way that no human can. The dog would listen to everything I had to say with no judgement and complete privacy. Second, I would get out of my home more, I would exercise more and I would have a companion to accompany me into the world beyond my home and the war in my head. Third, I would be able to turn a corner in healing. The dog would provide a means of getting better where therapy and other treatments have not helped. I feel if I had a successful and positive experience with the dog, it would be the lift I need to start having success in the path towards healing. I may be able to relieve some of my symptoms and be able to look at returning to school and work. I would become once again the husband and father that my family needs. I think a dog would be the deposit for a new lease on life. Justin D. Townley Chaplain (Captain), US ARMY Retired

CDA/North Fork: No recent reports Clark Fork: No recent reports Clearwater: Good – Daily limit is 1 steelhead. Closed areas: The main Salmon River between Warren Creek and the Copper Mine Boat Ramp & South Fork of Clearwater River upstream of the Mount Idaho Grade Bridge. Columbia River: Good – Conditions are good, but fishing activity seems slow. Grande Ronde: Good – Normally one of the hot steelhead destinations but up and down regulations have anglers rethinking how far they are willing to travel. Little Spokane River: Good – Mountain whitefish are being found in some of the deeper holes. Closed to all species other than whitefish. Rocky Ford Creek: Good – Very few reports over the past few weeks but rainfall throughout the region will stir things up! Snake River: Good – Steelhead numbers are down from predicted. Daily limit is 1 hatchery steelhead. Check emergency rules if you are planning to fish for steelhead on the Snake. Spokane River: Good – Trout are still showing on a variety of small spinners, spoons, and an assortment of jigs. Nine Mile Dam to the State Line at Post Falls is open until March 15, just be vigilant with the local regulations. St. Joe River: No recent reports Amber Lake: Closed for the season Badger/Williams Lake: Closed for the season Banks Lake: Good – Colder temps have walleye and smallmouth stacking on deeper structure but catchable using jigs and worm harnesses and deep trolled crankbaits. Lake Superior whitefish remain down around 90'-100' and those that know how to target them are doing well. Bead Lake: Good – Pretty quiet over the past few weeks with the warmer temps keeping this big lake open with no fishable ice. Bonnie Lake: Fair – Reports slow this time of year with low water levels making the creek impassable. Clear Lake: Closed for the season Cow Lake: No recent reports

Two Spokane Sportsman’s Warehouse Locations to Serve Your Needs!

Deer Lake: Closed for the season Diamond Lake: Good – Lots of anticipation of a new lake to ice fish, but not much heard from the locals. With the recent rains PleaSe take extra precautions as wind and rain will destroy ice very rapidly! This is the first year this lake has been held open year round! Downs Lake: Closed for the season Hauser Lake: No recent reports Lake Coeur d’Alene: No recent reports Lake Pend Oreille: No recent reports Lake Roosevelt: Good – We’re seeing nice stringers of rainbows for trollers and bank fisherman. Walleye are being found in the 35'60' range depending on sunlight. Use jigs and worms or Slow Death setups behind bottom bouncers. Burbot are starting to show for night bank fisherman. Liberty Lake: Closed for the season Long Lake: Good – Look for smallies and crappie holding in deeper water on or around structure! Troll crankbaits and don’t be afraid to troll over very deep holes with fish suspended. Loon Lake: Closed for the season Medical Lake: Closed for the season Newman Lake: No recent reports Rock Lake: Good – Boaters are doing the best, but bank fishermen are catching fish as well. Nice browns are being caught pulling a variety of plugs and crankbaits. Also try threading a nightcrawler under a bobber. Silver Lake: Good – Panfish are showing, but not a lot of boat fisherman working this lake lately. This is a year around lake with a good healthy population of panfish. Sprague Lake: Good – Trollers are struggling but bait plunkers are reporting success from the shore with PowerBait or marshmallows and night crawlers for trout/salmonids. Being a shallow lake, fluctuating barometric pressure can make fish develop “Lock Jaw”. Sullivan Lake: Good – Browns and rainbows are being reported with the recent addition of some brookies! Consider night fishing as there is also a good population of burbot. Waitts Lake: No recent reports

How we Make tHe Perfect Pellet... The process begins with RECYCLED tree by-products. Only the highest quality, PREMIUM SELECT wood shavings & sawdust are used Next, the shavings go through a series of augers which chops them into smaller sawdust... This allows the sawdust to more efficiently go through THE DRIER

At this stage, MOISTURE is driven from the wood fiber to ensure clean, consistent, hot burning pellets, that far exceed industry standards.

Green Options in Home Siding

If new siding is on the list of must-do home projects this year, there are many factors to consider. Though its a transformative renovation, replacement siding is a significant and potentially expensive undertaking. Therefore, careful consideration must be given to the materials used and their maintenance, longevity, insulation factor, and cost. Many homeowners also want siding that is eco-friendly. Sustainability is an important consideration for many homeowners. Data from the National Association of Home Builders Green Multifamily and Single Family Homes 2017 SmartMarket Brief indicates that at least one-third of single-family and multifamily home builders who were surveyed said that green building is a significant portion of their overall activity (more than 60 percent of their portfolio). By 2022, this number should increase to nearly one-half in both the single-family and multifamily sectors. Green building has become an important and established part of the residental construction sector. Where siding is sourced, the materials that go into its fabrication and how well that siding insulates a home are key aspects of its green factor. The following are some of the more sustainable options in home siding. Reclaimed Timber A house sided with clapboard, or a log cabininspired look, is iconic. These types of siding are typically made from insect-repellant pine, cedar, cypress, or redwood. While lumber certified by the Forest Stewardship Council is environmentally friendly, homeowners may want to seek out reclaimed lumber. This wood has history and causes very little environmental impact. Plus, timber salvaged from old buildings or fallen trees may be superior to new wood because it likely came from slow-growing, old trees with dense grain. Continued On Page 20

Home energy Audits Written by: Gerry Ashby, Owner of Endurable Energy

Are you feeling chilly? Do you feel a draft in your home and you’re not sure where it’s coming from? In addition, you might have noticed a rise in your energy costs and you’re not sure why. Perhaps, an energy audit would be useful to you. What is an energy audit? It’s essentially an energy usage report card for your home, and it’s very valuable in highlighting energy problems that may exist throughout the home. An energy audit is performed using very specialized thermal imaging and energy sensor equipment throughout the interior and exterior of the home, addressing every possible energy or environmental aspect. And yes, it certainly helps the homeowner find the location of those elusive drafts! Energy audits can also be tailored and scaled back to focus on homeowners’ specific areas of concern. A full home energy audit is very thorough, taking about 4-6 hours to collect the data and observations. The energy auditor takes this information back to the office for review and analysis, translating the findings into a full, comprehensive, color-coded energy audit report within a week or two. The energy auditor then goes over the report with the homeowner, outlining how well the home is performing and pinpointing where the homeowner is losing energy or experiencing environmental issues. With the report in hand, this is an excellent time for the homeowner to ask the energy auditor questions or discuss “what if” options. The report even includes corrective options to conserve energy for the homeowner. Many of the energy cost-saving corrections outlined in the energy audit report can be performed by the homeowner as do-it-yourself repairs or upgrades. By far, DIY repairs and sweat equity is the homeowner’s most inexpensive way to begin to recoup their energy investment and reduce their energy costs, and a comprehensive energy audit report is an invaluable tool in doing so!

Avoid any negative environmental impact by choosing locally produced or reclaimed bricks or those made from post-consumer content. The longevity of bricks can often offset the energy expenditure in their manufacture. Plus, many bricks are made from natural clay, which can be an excellent insulator. Stucco HouseLogic says traditional stucco is made from sand and Portland cement mixed with water to make a usable plaster. Its tough and durable often lasting the life of the house. Eco-friendly variants include stucco made with an earth-and-lime mixture, offsetting the CO2 emissions associated with cement production. Stucco can reduce air infiltration that causes drafts in a home. Fiber-cement Fiber-cement is similar to stucco in that it is made from sand, Portland cement, clay, and wood pulp fibers. It can be fire-resistant and insect-proof and will not rot. Its a stable material that can recover almost 80 percent of the initial cost, according to the National Association of Realtors. Stone This nonrenewable resource can be beautiful on a home and durable, but mining it can impact the environment. If homeowners can use reclaimed or displaced stone, those are more sustainable options. Manufactured stone, which is cement and other materials molded to look like stone, is also aesthetically appealing and more eco-friendly.

Know The Facts: Five Biggest Myths About Diabetes (NAPS) For 30 million Americans, diabetes is an everyday reality. Diabetes can affect every decision, including what they eat, wear and do. Yet the 24/7 management of diabetes is often misunderstood, carrying a social burden, as too many Americans wrongfully assume the disease is the result of poor choices. The American Diabetes Association is setting the record straight. Here’s what’s real and what’s not when it comes to diabetes: Myth: Being Overweight Causes Diabetes. Fact: Being overweight is a risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes but it’s not the only one. Family history, ethnicity and age also play a significant role. In fact, people with type 2 diabetes are often at a normal weight or only moderately overweight. Myth: Diabetes is Caused by Eating Sugar. Fact: Type 1 diabetes is a disease, in which the imwww.spokane.Exchange

mune system attacks insulin-producing beta cells. Type 2 diabetes is caused by the body’s inability to use the insulin it produces and progresses so that less insulin is produced over time. Eating sugar doesn’t cause either type, though a diet high in calories can contribute to weight gain, which increases one’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Best Wishes in the New Year!

Myth: Taking Insulin Means You Have Failed to Manage Your Diabetes Properly. Fact: Type 2 diabetes is a progressive disease. Over time, the body gradually produces less and less of its own insulin to keep blood glucose levels in a healthy range, so insulin is needed. People with type 1 diabetes require insulin to survive. Myth: People with Diabetes Need to Eat Special Foods and Can’t Eat Sweets. Fact: A healthy meal plan for people with diabetes is generally the same as a healthy eating plan for anyone: low in saturated fat and moderate in salt and sugar, with meals based on lean protein, nonstarchy vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats and fruit. People with diabetes can eat sweets and desserts. The key to sweets for everyone is small portions. Myth: Diabetes Isn’t That Serious. Fact: Diabetes causes more deaths per year than breast cancer and AIDS combined, and nearly doubles your chance of having a heart attack. The good news is that managing diabetes can reduce your risk of such complications. For more information, go to www.diabetes.org/everydayreality

Some years ago, I created a personal marketing ad that shows a young child picking his nose. The caption read, “It’s not as hard as you think to pick a good Realtor®”. I still believe that is true today! I recently heard a radio ad that advertised an “easy way to find a good real estate agent”. They claim to have a data base that will immediately show you the “best” agents in your area. They allege to have done all the hard work for you, but it is unclear exactly how they come to their conclusions. Another radio advertiser confidently states that they personally sell more real estate than anyone in the whole area and if they don’t sell it, they will personally buy it. The problem with the first claim is that they are not connected with the data base that really has that information (the MLS), so their analysis of agents seems superficial. They make hasty judgments about brokers just to generate income. While it is free to the consumer, they require the buyer broker to pay a referral fee for that lead. In the second claim, the actual broker (whose name is in the ad) has about 50 agents working on their “team” and you will never talk to or work with that experienced broker who takes all the credit. Homelight.com’s founder Drew Uher, says about his first buying experience, “There was no easy way to research an agent’s performance, online review sites were unreliable, and after working with several agents it was clear that none of them were created equal”. While I agree that no real estate agents are created equal, I disagree with his other assertions. It isn’t as hard as you think to pick a good Realtor®! Any person with an average skill in social media or internet technology can quickly ascertain which real estate companies and brokers are doing the business in an area. A few phone calls or personal inquiries can help a newcomer get a quick read on who is doing the business well or in other words, at a high level of professionalism and service. I recently sent a referral to a Florida broker. I had chosen a handful of possible brokers from a 20 minute internet search in the area surrounding the property and after asking the candidates a series of quick questions, it was very obvious who had the expertise to handle my referral. It’s not that hard to choose well! (NAPS) If you’ve been thinking about making your house a Smart Home, three tech trends are worth considering:

criminals. Other valuable security tools include cameras from Nest that provide 24/7 monitoring and can send alerts directly to your phone if the system detects movement or someone in the house. Smart doorbells such as Ring provide live streaming, too, so you can monitor your residence and use a built-in microphone feature to communicate directly with whomever entered, welcoming a latchkey kid or deterring wouldbe thieves. With Bluetooth lock solutions such as August, you control access privileges from an app so there’s no need to hide or hand off a house key; while Roost sends notifications when it detects smoke or carbon monoxide and can alert you to a low battery, eliminating that annoying middle-of-the-night chirping.

1. Smart Lighting: Controlling home lighting through voice commands and mobile devices can be easy with low-cost, modular lighting systems from Deako. Traditional light switches can be converted to smart switches and smart dimmers, letting you control lighting, create schedules and personalize scenes for different activities, such as cooking, dining or relaxing at night. Mobile apps let you control lights when you’re away from home, for instance, turning on interior lights to make an empty home appear occupied and activating exterior lights to illuminate an entrance for a safer return. Smart lighting provides handsfree convenience, makes homes more aesthetically pleasing, and offers cost (and energy) savings because you can easily turn off lights when you donít need them.

3. Voice Command Device: Amazon’s Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple’s Siri are familiar companions to those who have access to voiceactivated speakers at home. Josh AI, Savant and Control4 also offer powerful ways to customize entire homes, integrating and controlling lighting, entertainment, climate and more. Operated by voice commands and smart sensors, these virtual assistants answer questions (such as will it rain today?), provide recommendations (since you liked that song, you might like this one), and take such actions as customizing a music playlist, locking doors, closing window shades, heating a home spa, dimming lights, reclining chairs and streaming video for movie night.

2. Smart Home Security: Programming outdoor lighting, turning it on at sunset and off at sunrise, for instance, is one effective way to thwart
