FishinG rEPort CDA/North Fork: Good – Water levels are at early fall levels and water clarity is excellent. Spoke with some individuals who say they are doing well in the deep holes for whitefish. Clark Fork: Good – With fall water levels and water conditions clear, the bite can be tough and the fish very spooky. Keep that in mind when approaching your favorite holes and try downsizing leader and terminal tackle or flies. Clearwater: Good – Steelhead are still hit and miss. Bank and boat fisherman are catching native and hatchery fish on jigs with shrimp or just shrimp. Now is the time to go but check for closed areas with IDFG. Columbia River: Good – Conditions have been good but not a lot being reported at the moment. We should start hearing more about all the local waters with hunting season finishing up. Grande Ronde: Good – This is the time of year that the fishermen start hitting the Ronde for some beautiful steelhead! Fish an assortment of beads bounced along the bottom or jigs and shrimp or roe. Little Spokane River: No recent reports Rocky Ford Creek: Good – Very few reports over the past few weeks, but history suggests this is the time of year to throw some of your larger patterns for big ‘bows and browns! Snake River: Good – Steelhead are biting, though mostly native fish are being reported. Successful anglers say bobbers and shrimp along with jigs tipped with shrimp tails are working. We’re also hearing that the bite is pretty good from Little Goose and Lower Monumental. Spokane River: Good – Trout are still showing on a variety of small spinners, spoons, and an assortment of jigs. Nine Mile Dam to the State Line at Post Falls is open until March 15, just be vigilant with the local regulations. St. Joe River: Good – No recent information but with the cold weather, anglers should expect the same conditions as the Clark Fork and Coeur d’Alene. Amber Lake: Closed for the season Badger/Williams Lake: Closed for the season Banks Lake: Good – The colder temps are starting to get the walleye and smallmouth moving to deeper structure but they’re still catchable using jigs and worm harnesses. The Lake Superior whitefish remain down around 90’-100’ and those that know how to target them are doing well. Bead Lake: No recent reports Bonnie Lake: Good – Reports slow this time of year with low water levels making the creek impassable.
Clear Lake: Closed for the season Cow Lake: Fair – The fishing has slowed here but it shouldn’t be long before ice reports start coming in! Patient trollers are finding some trout. Lake Coeur d’Alene: Good – Kokanee are, for the most part, done for this season. They are showing along the docks and very dark. Lake Pend Oreille: Good – Mackinaw, Gerrard rainbows, and kokanee are doing good if you put in the time. Planer boards and a variety of plugs, along with Frisky Jenny flies, are the most productive right now. Lake Roosevelt: Good – Still seeing some nice stringers of rainbows for the trollers and bank fisherman. Walleye are being found in the 35’-60’ range depending on sunlight. Fish jigs and worms, or Slow Death setups behind bottom bouncers. If you haven’t given night fishing a try for big walleye, you’re missing some great action! Liberty Lake: Closed for the season Long Lake: Good – Lots of opportunity now that the temps are dropping. Slow your presentations down and try deep diving crankbaits for both smallmouth and big crappie! Loon Lake: Closed for the season Medical Lake: Closed for the season Newman Lake: Fair – Some largemouth showing, but not in large numbers. No reports of any muskie. Rock Lake: Good – Boaters are finding decent fish if they put in the time. Nice, stable weather makes for safe boating conditions. Nice browns are being caught on a variety of plugs and crankbaits. Also try threading a nightcrawler under a bobber and see what happens! Silver Lake: Good – Panfish are showing, but not a lot of boat fisherman working this lake lately. This is a year around lake with a good healthy population of panfish. Sprague Lake: Good – This lake has slowed for the trollers, however bait plunkers are still reporting some success from the shore with PowerBait, marshmallows, and nightcrawlers. Sullivan Lake: No recent reports Waitts Lake: No recent reports

It’s Christmas Eve and I’m sitting here thinking about you… (really!) and I know this topic is the last thing on your mind right now… that is your water and your well. I’m reminded of a story in the recent past where a family started noticing long black hairs appearing at their kitchen faucet. As time progressed this condition became more noticeable and the owner finally went to check it out. When he got to the location of the hand dug well, he noticed that the old plywood lid was caved in and that there was a very large dead bull moose in the well. Of course in the cold water and wintery conditions, it had taken a very long time for the carcass to decompose enough for the hair to slip from the hide and get sucked into the pump and into the house. Yes, you are right…that is gross! Even though this type of failure and major contamination is not usual, it is common for hand dug wells AND drilled and properly capped wells to become contaminated at some point. Maybe a good Christmas gift for next year would be to purchase a Private Well Test for a member of your family! We just don’t think about this topic enough! If a family can tolerate the taste of the water from a well with a dead bull moose, just think of what else could be contaminating your water! In the city you never even give it a thought, except maybe that you don’t drink the water because it tastes like chlorine, but in the country where you are connected to a well, you ought to have a schedule (maybe every couple of years) for periodic testing, whether the water tastes good or not. Contaminants common to our area are; coliform (this includes ecoli bacteria), nitrates, lead, arsenic, uranium, iron, manganese, etc. Most of the elements that can be harmful are also tasteless. Anatek Labs, the premier water testing lab in our region, has a test called the Private Well Test that includes all of the elements listed above and many more, including a test for hardness and PH, all for about $150. Did you know that researchers are connecting the presence of kidney stones with the hardness of water and cancer with uranium in wells? Getting a test done is a small price to pay for the peace of mind that it offers!
