2017 Photo Contest Winners Announced As in years past, photographers were asked to submit photos that depict agriculture in the Inland Northwest. This contest is open to Shutterbugs of all ages, and entries were judged in two categories, youth and adult. All of the entries will be displayed at the 2017 Spokane Ag Expo at the Spokane Convention Center Exhibit Halls during “Ag Week in Spokane” on February 7-9, 2017. Following the show, the win-

ning photos will be posted on the show website www.AgShow.org, as will be the Contest Rules and Contest Entry Form for 2018 entrants. The purpose of the contest is to promote Inland Northwest Agriculture and to give amateur photographers, particularly from rural areas, an opportunity for their work to be shown and recognized.

Drone captures vineyard irrigation data by Scott Weybright PROSSER, Wash. – People may notice a small, unmanned helicopter flying over Washington vineyards this past summer, but don’t worry. Doing work for science, it is fully approved by the Federal Aviation Administration. The drone, or unmanned aerial system (UAS), is an eightrotor “octo-copter.” It uses high tech cameras to assess the status of plant health known as “canopy vigor” and relate that to irrigation water use and evaporation from grapevines. The flights are part of a long-term Washington State University study on subsurface irrigation in vineyards. “We can do measurements on the ground, but they’re time-consuming, laborious and take a while to process,” said Lav Khot, assistant professor in the WSU Department of Biological Systems Engineering and affiliate

faculty for the Center for Precision & Automated Agricultural System (CPAAS). “With the small UAS, we can get real-time measurements in minutes with incredible accuracy. It’s a huge advantage.” Growing wine grapes with less water The study Khot is involved in is an effort to reduce the amount of irrigation water used to grow wine grapes by applying water directly to the roots of a vine in the ground, instead of dripping water on the ground near the trunk. The project is led by WSU professors Pete Jacoby and Sindhuja Sankaran, both affiliate faculty members of CPAAS. In the first year of the study, Khot said one treatment used 60 percent of the normal amount of water, and the vines had no yield differences. But the three-year project is

Khot stitches together the images to get data for an entire vineyard study plot. testing a variety of fields to see what levels of subsurface irrigation, at what intervals, provide the best outcome for growers. “It’s very early, but it seems subsurface irrigation is working,” he said. “The berry size is the same as (with) control treatments, but we need more data. We’re really excited about the potential.” Measuring water transfer through vine canopy The octo-copter can carry up to nine pounds of equipment to measure the temperature of the vine canopy and how water transferred from the roots to the canopy is being used during various growth stages. The drone works by flying a few hundred feet above the vines, hovering in preprogrammed locations for a defined time period, then moving to the next location. Khot stitches together the images to get data for an entire vineyard study plot. The drone has built-in fail-safe features and geofencing capabilities; if it loses contact with its ground pilot, the drone will return to where it took off. Per FAA guidelines, it can only fly in “line of sight.” “We don’t want it to crash and we don’t want it to fly off and potentially damage itself, its payload or others’ property,” Khot said. http://cahnrs.wsu.edu/news-release/2016/07/05/ drone-captures-vineyard-irrigation-data/

Since 42% of all Garbanzo Beans are grown in Washington State, This Recipe is a local favorite!

1. Preheat the oven to 350 and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. Process the garbanzo, coconut oil and vanilla in a large processor until fairly smooth. 3. Add in the coconut sugar, flour, salt, baking soda and vinegar and blend until batter is smooth. 4. Add in the chocolate chips and pulse briefly until incorporated. 5. Drop the dough by heaping tablespoons onto a lined baking sheet and use wet fingers to gently flatten each mound (they won’t spread a lot on their own.) 6. Bake until the tops begin to crack and the edges are dry to the touch, about 18 minutes. Cool completely before serving.

Leadership Opportunities for Women in Ag According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the 2012 Agricultural Census, nearly one-million women are working America’s lands. That is nearly a third of our nation’s farmers.

Productivity for Every Season

Women in agriculture have a powerful story to tell – one of stewardship, resilience, and leadership – from everywhere from the combine to the boardroom. There are many opportunities to contribute your voice and experience to your field. Through the Department of Agriculture, you can take advantage of several key opportunities, such as: • Electing responsible agricultural producers to Farm Service Agency (FSA) county committees is important to all farmers and ranchers. Committee members are a critical component of the day-to-day operations of FSA. They help deliver FSA farm programs at the local level and work to help FSA agricultural programs serve the needs of local producers.

SERVING veterans

• Being a voice for your industry and shaping the future of agriculture by serving on a Research and Promotion

Program Board. These programs, overseen by USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service, focus on research, marketing, and consumer outreach efforts that improve, maintain, and develop opportunities for agricultural commodities. Funded by industry assessments, the programs allow stakeholders across an industry to pool their expertise and resources. Research and Promotion programs are run by a board or council whose members are nominated by the industry and then appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture. There are 22 national boards serving a variety of commodity industries, from eggs to soybeans, lumber to lamb. • Serving on one of a number of USDA’s Federal Advisory Committees that advise on a variety of issues ranging from emerging markets to animal health. These committees play an important role in shaping programs and policies of the government and the department. USDA is continuously seeking nominations for all advisory committees. Opportunities to serve are routinely available as the term of each member expires. To help women in Washington connect with other women leaders in agriculture all across the country, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has established a women in ag mentoring network. Better, Stronger, Faster: the $15 Million Greenhouse By Mike Pumphrey, WSU Spring Wheat Breeder It’s been a little over a year since the doors to the expanded Washington Grain Plant Growth Facility opened, or if you measure time like Washington State University (WSU) winter wheat breeder Arron Carter, it’s been enough time to grow 6,500 new doubled-haploid breeding lines. Thanks to the vision, support, and confidence of Washington wheat growers acting through the Washington Grain Commission, WSU and the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), wheat researchers in Pullman have had access to high-quality greenhouse space since 1997 when building 122, also known as the plant growth center, opened. That building’s construction was made possible by a $1 million contribution from what was then the Washington Wheat Commission which leveraged another $3 from the Washington legislature and $4 million

from the federal government. The June 2015 opening of the $15 million expansion, which was also built thanks to a unique funding formula, ($5 million from the WGC, $5 million from WSU and $5 million in equipment from the ARS), came just in time as current wheat programs were bursting at the seams. With an additional 7,200 square feet of greenhouse space divided into 12 bays, and with each bay able to hold 850 to a thousand pots for standard greenhouse grow-outs of wheat, that’s up to 12,000 additional pots growing at any given time. Spring wheat and barley can easily complete three life-cycles per year in the greenhouse, so a single extra greenhouse bay means 3,000 additional pots per year. The additional space has resulted in an increase in the number of lines we are able to screen with DNA markers or by phenotype, for various traits including disease resistance, cold tolerance, insect resistance, herbicide tolerance, protein content, and end-use quality. We are also better able to evaluate resistance to several pathogens, herbicide tolerance and cold tolerance in the greenhouse year-round because we can get multiple screening cycles in and often get more uniform results than in field trials. The expanded greenhouse facility has a laboratory, growth chambers, and processing space specifically designed for ramping-up doubled haploid breeding. For winter wheat especially, the production of doubled haploid lines under glass has transformed breeding efforts, not only improving efficiency, but allowing for greater production. Doubled-haploid production is a year-round effort, and expanded vernalization growth rooms and greenhouse bays have removed our doubled-haploid infrastructure bottleneck. Doubled-haploid breeding, which can shave a couple of years off bringing up a line for release, has resulted in improved efficiency of winter wheat breeding programs, which translate to greater on-farm production for wheat growers–a win-win. With a designated herbicide/chemical spray chamber room included in the growth facility, we have seen improved reliability and capacity for herbicide resistance research. Weed scientist Ian Burke’s herbicide-resistant weed screening project has been using the new space and equipment to track resistant biotypes, a major benefit to Washington producers. Spring and winter wheat two-gene Clearfield™ breeding efforts are also more streamlined thanks to the purpose-built herbicide spray chamber onsite. Plant Growth Chamber at WSU Greenhouse Perhaps a more telling effect of the new greenhouse space is that the barley breeding program now has high-quality greenhouse space for making crosses. Until 2016, WSU barley breeder Kevin Murphy, and retired barley breeder

quality lubricants oils & greases for: • industry • trucking • logging

Rotella® T Motor Oils

• farm • aviation

Steve Ullrich before him, made all barley crosses in the field or in old, low-quality greenhouse space. Thanks to Murphy’s space in the new greenhouse, the barley program’s crossing success rate has increased from approximately 50 percent to essentially 100 percent, doubling labor efficiency and success. Murphy has also been using the new greenhouse to advance his imidazalone tolerant barley development efforts. The goal of the research is to allow barley to be planted on wheat ground that has been treated with the long residual Beyond herbicide. He said the new facility will allow him to far surpass his previous capacity. Our new stripe rust inoculation chamber can hold thousands of plants, instead of hundreds, and inoculation is no longer a capacity limitation. That means more breeding populations and lines may be screened in early generations to select for stripe rust resistance prior to field evaluation. A key feature of the facility’s expansion has been the intentional designation of space for cutting-edge plant phenotyping techniques and equipment. Using funds contributed by the USDA-ARS, we have purchased several new instruments and systems to research automated methods for plant phenotyping. A conveyor-belt driven automated phenotyping system will be installed this winter, as well as custom phenotyping platforms developed by Sindhu Sankaran of the Department of Biological Systems engineering at WSU. Our goal is to generate more detailed and automated data to increase research efficiency for all traits that are suitable to automated data collection. Perhaps my favorite feature of the new greenhouse is having ample space for long term preservation of important germplasm and breeding lines. A climate-controlled seed storage room was built in the greenhouse addition, which has low temperature and reduced humidity, making it ideal for long-term preservation of grain. As breeders and geneticists, we are the stewards of the wheat plant’s genes. The germplasm we develop based on annual funding from the WGC and others is the cornerstone of long-term improvement for farmers, especially in an era when determining the genetic composition of a variety is more straightforward than in the past. Having a safe place to store the literal fruits of these efforts is like money in the (seed) bank. Reprinted with permission from Washington Grain Commission www.wagrains.org

509-535-1708 1-800-873-7428 *0% APR for 48 months. Available ONLY on all new HTE equipment. Minimum finance is $1,500. Example: On a purchase where the amount financed is $7,500, your down payment is $0 with 48 monthly payments of $157.30 each. Interest rate is 0% [ANNUAL PERCENTAGE RATE is 0.33% (E)]. For other amounts financed, the payment would be approximately $20.84 per $1,000 financed.

It is irrefutable that carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels are a major factor in contributing to the greenhouse gasses that affect our planet. Every gallon of biodiesel used in place of petroleum diesel translates to as much as an 85% reduction in carbon emissions. Today, thousands of restaurants in our region are paid fair compensation for their waste vegetable oil to be recycled into biodiesel. This results in the availability of competitively priced alternative fuel made in the Pacific Northwest. Biodiesel can be used as a substitute for regular diesel and requires no engine modifications. It will, however, clean out fuel system residue and usually requires additional filter replacement at the beginning of use. Today’s international biodiesel industry owes its success and viability to the work done at the University of Idaho. These researchers are recognized as the world’s leading experts with over 30 years of biodiesel research and education.

In spite of this, our area has not seen a consistent availability of this fuel. However, this is beginning to change as regional production steadily increases. Biodiesel is now available from a small independently owned distributorship in the Spokane area and Eastern Washington. For more information about biodiesel go to biodieseleducation.org or contact John Crockett at the University of Idaho jbcrockett@uidaho.edu. To find out more about purchasing this fuel go to BiodieselSpokane.com

Just how important is wheat production in Washington State? According to the Washington Grain Commission, very important!

It’s The Month of Love!

There is more land planted to wheat in the world than any other crop. Wheat provides 20-percent of the world’s caloric consumption, and for the world’s poorest, 50-percent. (Wheat accounts for 20-percent of their protein consumption too.)

Eastern Washington’s 3,715 wheat farmers support another 3,406 off-farm jobs through the businesses that serve them. An additional 4,013 jobs are sustained by the personal spending of farmers, their families and employees for a total of 11,134 jobs that depend upon the Washington State’s wheat crop. Although wheat is also grown on the west side of the state, the majority of farms are concentrated east of the Cascade Mountains. Eastern Washington farmers predominantly grow two kinds of soft white wheat. Common varieties have elongated heads. About 80-percent of Washington’s soft white crop in any year is planted to common varieties.

Club wheat migrated to the Northwest from South America, and before that, Spain. It is even softer than soft white, and has a unique compact head shape. Club wheat is super soft! Certain countries, especially Japan, buy club wheat in a 10 to 20-percent blend with common varieties creating the Western White wheat blend. Wheat is a type of grass, and eastern Washington’s cool nights and warm days are ideal for its production. Although North Dakota recently overtook Kansas as the number-one wheat producing state in the nation, neither has the diversity of climates that makes Washington so unique. In Washington, it’s possible for farmers to grow: soft white wheat, hard red winter wheat, hard red spring wheat and hard white wheat.

In Washington State, for every dollar of income generated by wheat farming, 51-cents is earned by businesses that support farmers. Match that with the value of off-farm purchases by farmers and their employees, and each wheat farming dollar generates an additional 98-cents of economic activity; much of it in rural areas where agriculture serves as a crucial anchor of small towns and regional economies.
