OUTDOOR ADVENTURE SHOW

Brought to you by: Inland Northwest Wildlife Council 509-487-8552 • 6116 N. Market St. Spokane, WA 99208

Show Director: Wanda Clifford

For 59 years The Big Horn Show has connected people with passions for the outdoors and helped residents of the Northwest find new adventures. That tradition is as true today as it was in 1960, the year of the first ever Big Horn Show. Much has changed but the best has remained the same. The show has and continues to be built by volunteers of the Inland Northwest Wildlife Council. Profits from this event continue to go back to the the Inland Northwest Wildlife Council to fund local habitat and conservation projects. This year take the time to explore the 13,000 sq.ft. of exhibitor space, you are sure to meet new friends

along the way. The 300+ vendors come equipped with cutting edge gear and information on excursions of a lifetime. Escape the hustle and bustle of the show and attend one of the many seminars happening each day of the show. Give your feet a break and catch one of the West Texas Rattlesnake Shows that is sure to impress the whole family! Or better yet come down Friday night and see what Ladies Night is all about. No matter what day of the show you attend, each day will be different and have something for everyone to enjoy. See you there!

While you’re at the show, be sure to bring the kids to these family friendly attractions:

Fishing World

It’s always fishing season at the Les Schwab’s Fishing World. Buy your license, grab a pole and drop a line in one of the pools. All the pools are stocked with hundreds of fish just waiting to be caught. Catch and release is not permitted, anglers pay per fish caught. On your way out be sure to swing by the photo area to commemorate your catch. You can choose to take your fish home or to donate the meat to our local food bank instead.

Silver Mine

Let your kids experience what it’s like to mine for silver in the Big Horn Show Silver Mine! Volunteers from the Inland Northwest Wildlife Coucil lead you through the mine and kids can dig for fun prizes along the way!

Archery Range

Give your kids a first hand experience at the Archery Range. This booth is run from volunteers of the local Evergreen Archery Club! Come check out this exhibit where you’ll be able to shoot at 2D and 3D targets. Who knows maybe they’ll find a new hobby at the archery range.

Shooting Gallery

The Sportsman’s Warehouse shooting gallery is back again by popular demand. Take your best shot and see if you can hit the bullseye! The Sportsman’s Warehouse provides the equipment (guns and bullets), staffs the booth and donates the proceeds of the shooting gallery to the Inland Northwest Wildlife Council.

CDA/North Fork: No recent reports Clark Fork: No recent reports Clearwater: Good – If you can deal with very low temperatures and not seeing the sun in the canyons, this is a productive period. Columbia River: Good – Conditions are favorable and will stay that way through the cold weeks ahead. Lots of activity for walleye trolling or drifting bottom bouncers, trolling Rapala’s (or Rapala-type plugs), jigs tipped with nightcrawler, and Slow Death rigs with a either a smiley blade or “butterfly” blades. We carry a UV enhanced “GLO-WORM” nightcrawler that really gets the fish biting! Grande Ronde: Good – Steelhead are taking single beads with yarn and sand shrimp under a float. Also, a “spoon fisherman” was bouncing small spoons and reported a number of hook-ups! Little Spokane River: Good – Closed to all species other than whitefish. Most fish are bunched up in the deepest holes. Rocky Ford Creek: Good – Concentrate on the leading edge of deeper holes for active rainbows. Snake River: Good – Those braving the cold are being rewarded with channel cats and legal steelhead. They’re getting hungry as the days get longer. Spokane River: Good – Throw small spinners, spoons, and jigs for rainbows from Nine Mile Dam to State Line at Post Falls. It is open ‘til March 15. Just be vigilant with the local regs. Fish the deeper holes and current breaks. St. Joe River: No recent reports Amber Lake: NOW OPEN! Badger/Williams Lake: Closed for the season Banks Lake: Good – Reports have slowed, however this can be the most productive time to catch fish through the ice! Bead Lake: Good – Fishermen are going out in search of burbot through the ice. They are finding some, but no “big ones” yet. Worms, shrimp, crawfish, and cut bait are all good bait choices. Some report an occasional mackinaw while jigging for burbot. Bonnie Lake: No recent reports Clear Lake: Closed for the season Cow Lake: Fair – A couple of hardy fisherman ventured out last week and caught some trout. Deer Lake: Closed for the season

Diamond Lake: Good – Ice is in great shape and thick. Perch and trout are the main attraction, and there’s some good ones out there! Downs Lake: NOW OPEN! Hauser Lake: Good – Fishing pressure has been light but there are nice bluegill, crappie, rainbows and channel cat available through the ice. Lake Coeur d’Alene: Good – Fishing has slowed lately, likely due to the severe weather conditions. Pike fisherman are reporting some success on large baits under a float, and we stock them! Whole, fresh herring and shad catch BIG pike! Lake Pend Oreille: Good – Mackinaw, Kamloops, and kokanee are doing well if you put in the time. Trollers are focusing on the top 30'-60' of water, depending on weather. Lake Roosevelt: Good – Nice stringers of rainbows from the shore and boat anglers using marshmallows and salmon eggs. Trollers are dragging Flatfish, Double Whammies, Wedding Rings, and mini-squid tipped with worm, maggots, or corn. Some burbot have been caught, too! Try night fishing for them! Liberty Lake: NOW OPEN! Long Lake: Good – If you brave the weather, this is a great time to target smallmouth and large crappie suspended over deep holes in open water. Loon Lake: Closed for the season Medical Lake: Closed for the season Newman Lake: Fair – There are nice crappie being caught suspended in deeper water for the few anglers fishing. Rock Lake: Good – Mostly bank anglers reporting with the weather making it difficult to launch a boat. They’re finding success with worms, marshmallows, or PowerBait. Trollers are dragging anything from plugs to flies to spoons!!! Brave the elements for a chance at a monster brown trout! Silver Lake: Good – There is ice, but use caution when going out! Lots of small spiny rays and trout are biting, but the big ones are elusive. Sprague Lake: No recent reports, but as long as you use precautions, this lake is an excellent yearround fishery. Sullivan Lake: Good – Sullivan is in the same shape as Bead. Use caution when venturing out on the ice for burbot, mackinaw, and brook trout. Waitts Lake: No recent reports but open year-round!

WDFW Closes Multiple Southeast Washington Wildlife Areas And Units To Protect Deer And Elk SPOKANE - Two Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) wildlife areas (WLAs) and multiple units of other wildlife areas in southeast Washington are closed to public access until April. These closures are aimed at cutting down on disturbances to deer and elk struggling through extreme winter conditions. Heavy snow loads and colder than normal temperatures are causing physical stress to wildlife in the area. The 4-O Ranch and Grouse Flats WLAs, along with the Weatherly Unit, Shumaker Unit, and all Asotin Creek WLA units south of the North Fork of Asotin Creek and Campbell Grade are closed to human activity. Minimizing contact between humans and animals will help the chances of survival for wildlife. “The 2019 winter has been more severe than normal in February and elk and deer are at the low-

est end of their nutritional state. It is thought that the fall drought, lack of fall green up, and the dry summer may have resulted in elk being in poorer than normal condition entering the winter. Elk and deer have been documented dying of starvation in places in southeast Washington. Reducing any further stress from disturbance will be important to maximize survival,” said Paul Wik, District Wildlife biologist These closures mostly impact shed hunters who use the approximately 27,190 affected acres to recover antlers dropped by deer and elk this time of year. Adjacent U.S. Forest Service public lands are still open for winter activities at this time.

“We know it’s an adjustment for the public, but we need their help. Abiding by the closure helps to protect our wildlife for long-term population health,” Wik said.

Closed areas are marked with signs to the extent possible. Fishing access is still available for the river corridor on the Shumaker unit. Motorized travel on county maintained roads through the areas is also still allowed. More information on WDFW wildlife areas can be found at https://wdfw.wa.gov/lands/wildlife_areas/

Y.O.U. Can Make a DifferenCe! Youth Outdoors Unlimited (Y.O.U.) is a Washington based non-profit that serves youth who have been diagnosed with life threatening medical conditions and/or physical disabilities. Y.O.U.’s mission is to give these kids an opportunity to enjoy the great worlds of hunting and fishing by providing them fully funded and guided hunting or fishing adventures. Since the founding of Y.O.U. in 2011, the organization has granted almost 100 one-onone adventures for kids who didn’t think they could enjoy the outdoors or for kids who had a dream hunting or fishing trip on their bucket list. In 2018 Y.O.U. provided 17 of these once in a lifetime adventures to kids and hopes to provide 20 or more kids new adventures if funding allows in 2019. Youth Outdoors Unlimited specializes in providing hunting and fishing adventures for youth needing assistance and adaptive equipment because of their various physical disabilities. In addition, Y.O.U. serves

many kids who are facing life threatening medical conditions. These kids and their families are given the opportunity to do something outside their routines of medical treatments and the daily threat of their diagnosis. All expenses relating to these adventures are covered through Y.O.U.’s fundraising efforts. All adventures are 100% free to the youth and their families including all training, outfitting, trip food, licensing, meat processing and if there is a harvest, taxidermy is donated by various taxidermists throughout the Pacific Northwest. Y.O.U.’s funding is from private individuals and corporate donations as well as various fundraising events throughout the year. If you are interested in attending one of Y.O.U.’s banquets, sponsoring or donating an item for an upcoming event, or want to volunteer, contact Cindy Carpenter at you@youthoutdoorsu.org or 509-431-1604 for information. Upcoming Banquets are in Spokane, Olympia and Yakima.

Family Forest Fish Passage Program (Triple F, Double P) The Family Forest Fish Passage Program (FFFPP) is a voluntary program where landowners can receive financial and technical assistance for the removal of fish barriers on their property. A fish barrier is any artificial (human-caused) in-stream structure that impedes the free passage of fish, such as culverts, dams, weirs, and road crossings. The program is administered by the Department of Natural Resources Small Forest Landowner Office and covers 75-100% of all removal and re-

placement costs for eligible landowners, unless the property has been harvested with in 3 years. Then there would be minimal cost. Small Forest Landowners own 3.2 million acres of Washingtonís forests, about half of the private forestland in the state. These family forests are important to fish and include thousands of fish-bearing streams. The program was created to help restore fish populations by eliminating the barriers that keep fish from reaching miles of habitat upstream.

Meet Taniya Nayak HGTV Design Star

April 19-21 Convention Center

Getting Started: Contact the Small Forest Landowner Office directly to get started; they can be reached at 360-902-1400 or by e-mail at SFLO@dnr. wa.gov. Once your application is received, your barrier will be assessed and prioritized. Once it is approved for funding, you will work with the SCD as a project sponsor, and we will assist with the contracting and permitting and other aspects of project management.

Before: Fish cannot pass through the culverts.

After: The culvert barrier is removed and a bridge is installed. Fish can now move freely through increased miles of habitat.

Smoky Sockeye Salmon By Heath Harmon, The Exchange’s Fish Guru

If you haven’t been out to Brewster, WA and fished with 500 of your closest friends for Columbia River sockeye, you’re missing out! These 3-8 pound fish are plentiful and delicious! If you’ve not fished Brewster for sockeye, I would recommend going with an experienced friend first, or book a guided trip so you can see how this unique fishery works. You’ve got 200 boats in an area the size of two football fields, so it’s not for the faint of heart until you’ve got a few trips under your belt. But once you dial in on the fish, limits are quick and exciting, and you’ll want to barbeque them up! Here’s one of our favorite recipes... Ingredients: • 2 Sockeye fillets • Lemon Pepper • Lawry’s Seasoning Salt • Michlich Blackened Red • Garlic Powder • Frank’s Red Hot Preparation: Light dusting of Lemon Pepper (1/2 tablespoon) Liberal coat of Lawry’s (2 table spoons) Light dusting of Blackened Rub (1/2 tablespoon) Light dusting of garlic powder (1/2 tablespoon) Put your seasoned fillets in a ziplock bag and add 3/4-to-1 cup Frank’s Red Hot. Shake the bag to distribute the hot sauce all over the fish. Place the bag in the refrigerator for 2-3 days, shaking bag once or twice a day to keep the hot sauce on all sides. Fire up your Traeger on smoke with your favorite pellet flavor and slow smoke your sockeye fillets for 6 hours. Once smoked, turn up heat to 350 for
