hooting at the stars, or rather balloons in this case. Nichole Mulligan, of Culdesac, Idaho is just doing that by exceeding her dreams. Nichole is a member of, and practices with The (IGH ,ONESOME S, a local Cowboy Mounted Shooting Club. Practice has paid off for her, as she has qualiďŹ ed for the World Cowboy Mounted Shooting event being held in Amarillo Texas starting October 19 thru 24th, 2010. Nichole competed at her ďŹ rst CMSA event at Lewiston, Idaho in April, taking home ďŹ rst place as a Women’s Level 1 Shooter. She then headed off to Regional Championships in Hermiston, Oregon in May and brought home the Regional title. To her sheer delight she was invited to Guthrie, Oklahoma by Jimmie Allen, the cowboy from whom she purchased her shooting horse, “Maverick.â€? She attended the ďŹ rst annual *IMMIE !LLEN 3HOOTING #LINIC the week prior to the Stetson Classic. Excitement rose, as she wanted to show those Oklahoma

ladies how Idaho gals really shoot. This event was held at the famous Lazy E Arena, and she again shot her way to the top by winning her third consecutive Championship. Flying home, she kept looking at the belt buckle she just won, thinking‌7 years ago when she ventured out and began her horse training business #USTOM #OWGIRL 4RAINING AND 3ALES, she never imagined herself to be where she is today! Between training horses, barrel racing and mounted shooting this has been one heck of a busy year. Not letting her horse training business falter, she is working as hard as ever to establish herself as an accomplished horsewoman of many talents. Bling in hand we’ll see if she can bring home a World title in October! Nichole would like to thank her sponsors ATK Law Enforcement Division, D Double E Quarterhorses, Don Johnson Trailer Company, Cactus Custom Saddlery, Double H Hats, Triple Crown Feed, and most of all, her loving and supportive husband Brett Mulligan. I am sure of one thing, Nichole is one Idaho gal who can shoot her way to the top. 7RITTEN BY #INDY 7ORTH ,APWAI )DAHO

Ann Kirk’s SENSIBLE HORSEMANSHIP In the Saddle - Move the Feet! Autumn is a great time of the year with all the changes in the weather and the plants. If the weather is nice, it is a perfect time to work with your horse and enjoy the days before the cold makes it harder to get out. Now that you have mounted your horse, you might want to know the best way to get his feet moving without scaring you and him. I have been in this situation many times over the years and have tried various methods, looking for a smooth transition. I have settled on the one I am going to teach you this month. So, read this carefully, get your horse ready, warm him up and get on. We are going for our first ride!!! When I start teaching movement while on the horse, I do not want to use my legs. The horse is clueless as to the meaning of bumping or squeezing with my legs. When I do the sacking out work, I will bump and pat his sides with my hand while he stands and walks so my legs will not surprise him when I am astride. So, I need to use a cue that he already understands means to move his feet. For me, that is disen-

The goal is to connect you with your horse by teaching you sensible, hands-on exercises that

gaging the hip because it is the most important control I can have of his body for safety. It is natural as we move on in our training that we do not practice the beginning exercises very much. I am the same way and do not believe that I should constantly be drilling my horse on the same fundamentals every time I work him. But, here is a case where you want to make sure he is good at the beginning exercises as you will be transferring all your Bridle Work from the ground into the saddle. So, before you mount up, take a little time to work through the Bridle Dance and especially practice disengaging the hip from a stand still. This will be his first movement from on top and you don’t want him to wonder what he is being asked to do. When you are connected from the ground, mount up and relax. I like to just sit for a bit before starting something as it helps the horse to relax also. What I teach my horse now is how he will think riding is supposed to be later. If I immediately ask or let him move when I mount, I will have to go back and teach him to be still and wait. If your horse seems nervous, you either should not be on him yet or you will want to be ready to control the hip right away. He may need to go right to work to relieve the tension. Be wise and don’t put yourself in unnecessary danger. It is best to practice these steps first on a well broke horse before trying it on a ‘firsttimer’ so you can focus more on technique instead of safety.

will reduce frustration and make your partnership possible. You are personally invited to come and join this fun-filled, incredible journey that will make your goals a reality!

Teaching the Art of Reading the Heart - Sensible Horsemanship OCTOBER 2010 • HORSE PREVIEWS • PAGE 4

OCTOBER 2010 • HORSE PREVIEWS • PAGE 5

Hold both reins in your right hand. I will call this the ‘middle hand’. Raise your ‘middle hand’ and slide your left hand or ‘active hand’ down the left rein as far as you can reach without leaning forward and close your hand firmly. Drop your ‘middle hand’ back down to let slack into the right rein. Bring your ‘active hand’ back towards your left hip and then up across your body towards your right shoulder. The horse’s nose should come around to the side and into the shoulder while his hip steps over to the right. As soon as you feel the hips start to move, release the left rein and praise him. Count to 5 and repeat the sequence. Do about 5 sets of using the left rein to move the hips to the right before switching sides. Some horses will seem stuck. You can bring the nose around and pull fairly hard and he won’t move his feet. Just drop a little slack to him and wait. If you don’t let the head go back forward, his neck will get tired and he will move his feet to relieve the ache. If he starts moving the front end, just take the slack back out and move the hip over. If he is really disconnected from previous training of flexing his head to the side, you may have to take more slack out by using your ‘middle hand’ to draw more through your ‘active hand’. Then you can bring his nose in tighter to the shoulder to move the hip. Remember to release when the front end stops and the hip steps over. Stopping the front feet is very important for the control aspect of this move. It takes a little to get the feel of it but you will soon know when he is doing it correctly. It is also important to keep your hands in front of your legs. Though I taught you to focus on taking your hand to the hip when teaching this lesson on the ground, when in the saddle, I want you to keep your hands in front of your legs for two reasons. The first is balance. You are going to be safer in the saddle if you stay facing forward and keep you hands in front of your body. The other is your ability to stop the horse’s forward motion by stopping his front feet. If you try to stop an excited horse by pulling your hand back past your leg towards the hip, they can continue to move the front feet and the back while going in a very fast, tight circle. This gets really dangerous. And the horse that is ‘rubbernecked’ can just continue going straight or out his shoulder even if his nose is tucked under his tail. You must be able to bring the nose in tight to the shoulder/withers to stop the front feet and move the hip over which takes away forward impulsion. When he is moving his hip one step, start asking for 2 and then 3 by releasing on each step and almost immediately asking for another. You will notice him begin to occasionally step out with a front foot when you do your mini-release between steps with the hip. If you begin to release on that front step, you can encourage him to walk forward. If you are comfortable, you can begin using your ‘kiss’ cue to encourage a few forward steps. This may startle him some de-

pending on how he reacts to the ‘kiss’ on the ground. When he will walk forward, you can practice disengaging his hip from a walk. Though I don’t use it, another option to get forward movement is having a reliable person lead him a few steps, let go and you disengage his hip to a stop. You can also begin cuing him to walk before your helper enforces movement to help him make the connection. But don’t get in a hurry. Take the time it takes to build a solid, safe, non eventful beginning and you will never regret it later. It’s human to get impatient and undo months of trust. A good horse is hard to find and you will have years of safe riding if you take your time at this stage of training. Next month, more on handling the reins, position in the saddle and more Sensible Horsemanship. Stay safe and God Bless your days.......Ann For more information on Ann Kirk and her Sensible Horsemanship Program, go to www.annkirk.com. Most of these lessons are available on the Sensible Horsemanship DVDs. Ann is also available for private lessons or clinics in your area.

Pacific Northwest Horsewoman Launches Line of Safe, Colorful, VeterinarianApproved Horse Halters Turn Your Horse Out in Style, Comfort and Safety This Year Vancouver, WA - If your horse comes back into his stall each night with a mud-caked halter buckle difficult to unfasten, or a cracked, weatherbeaten leather halter encrusted to his head, its time to try something new. It may be time to buckle on one of Jeaniene Jones’ Safe Horse Halters. Locally owned and made in Vancouver, Wa, USA, Safe Horse Halters can cater to a wide range of human and equine demands. These soft, lightweight polyester halters come in multiple colors and pattern choices, two different buckle types and breaking strengths, and sizes ranging from mini all the way up to draft horse. Additionally, the heavy hardware that comes standard on regular halters has been replaced with custom made lighter-weight hardware. These halters are also veterinarian recommended. Safe Horse Halters were designed by a horsewoman, Jeaniene Jones, who is also a successful real estate agent in Clark County, WA. The story behind the company is one of necessity being the mother of invention. Jeaniene boards her horse at a facility where daily turnout is into a large field, one that is often deluged with mud from the generous Pacific Northwest rains. The horses are required to wear halters while in turnout for the ease and safety of the stable management who bring them back into their stalls each night. Jeaniene and the other boarders were dissatisfied with the available turnout halters on the market, so Jeaniene designed one herself and launched Safe Horse Halters. For more details and ordering information, please visit our website, www.SafeHorseHalters.com on the internet or contact Jeaniene, jeanienej@comcast.net.

ON THE EDGE OF COMMON SENSE by Baxter Black, DVM

THE GLORY OF COWBOYIN' “…and the old man gave his orders, ‘Boys, go at them from the jump, no use to go for fancy riding now.’ ” That great line from The Man from Snowy River by Banjo Paterson crossed my mind as I started into the thorny brush and wicked mesquite thicket on a steep slide of rocks and tangled undergrowth, chasing a big bony cow the color of a rusted coal barge. By then we’d been in the saddle for six hours. It was 95 degrees, mid-September, grass going to seed, and every plant within fifty miles that had a stamen was pollinating! We left the pigweed-covered corrals at daylight pushing 72 cows and assorted calves. I noticed that the ugly light-brown brockle face 6-year old cow whose history included; deserting her first calf, tearing down fences, getting loose on the highway and raising only one calf who looked like a seahorse in a paper bag, did not have her new calf. Great. We cut her back to the corral so when we found her calf we could reunite them. Everything went as you might expect with 5 cowboys trying to push a herd cross-country through mesquite, catclaw, buckthorn,

arroyos and rocky ridges. Within the first mile two cows went back looking for their calves. They’d been weaned but they forgot. It was easier to let them go than having to take the whole crew to keep them with the bunch. We’ll get’em later. Then one big calf came up lame and couldn’t keep up. We tried to drop her and her mama back but she wouldn’t stay, so we cut out another pokey pair for company and they stayed. Every time we’d cross a deep arroyo or mesquite “orchard” it took a full dose of hoo-rahin’ and brush poppin’ to beat them out of the cover. It was hot already and they were lookin’ for shade. By noon we’d reached the Back Well. They filled up with water and we started them into some really rough country, brand-new to the cattle. I felt like Lewis and Clark! Two miles later, over big tracts of creosote bush and whitethorn I could see the large cut bank where the rain-filled water tank was. I had a vision of Moses looking over the Grand Canyon and thinking, “We’re almost there!” It took an hour to drive the cows that last quarter mile. That’s when I noticed that my mucho ugly brown cow had jumped the corral fence and made the 8-mile trip with us, with no calf, of course. An hour back to the Back Well. We’d arranged for a 20’ gooseneck to pick us up. Of course, it got stuck in the sand. An hour later our rescue arrived. We unloaded, unhooked and pulled it out in pieces. To top it off, back at the corrals we noticed buzzards circling and found the brown cow’s calf. As I write this, my nose is running, my knee is swollen, my shirt looks like I’ve been in a sword fight. I’ve got a gouge on my right arm, a slash across my cheek and a memory of my wore-out horse trying to roll in the muddy tank with me still in the saddle. I guess he just didn’t appreciate the glory of cowboyin’! www.baxterblack.com

K-Line is a revolutionary flexible hose line sprinkler irrigation system designed to reduce the time and money you spend on irrigation. At the heart of the system is a series of small, tough plastic pods protecting a small sprinkler firmly attached to special K-Line low density poly pipe. The system can be run on low pressure and is designed to distribute water on a slow absorption method for up to a 24 hour period, firstly, to eliminate the need to shift irrigation several times a day and, secondly, to allow maximum absorption into the soil, reducing run-off and pooling. K-Line uses less water much more effectively. K-Line is also very flexible. Variables such as running time per day/night, rotations, application rates, etc., can be easily adjusted to suit your farm management style. Horses can also continue to use the paddocks bepearson ing irrigated. farm & fence paddock, and is
