Sacking out—The Laying on of Hands-2 By Ann Kirk

2020 is here and with it comes a year like no other. This virus that has attacked our nation and the world has changed our lives in ways we could not have imagined at the beginning of the year. It can be an anxious time for many and I pray this article will give you something to do with your horses that will give an outlet to the emotions of being separated from others and concerned for loved ones. We will continue where we left off last time with the sacking out process. The term “sack out” refers to a process used to get the horse to calmly accept any reasonable amount of pressure, whether it comes from an object, your presence or your touch. You are going to use many objects around your horse in its lifetime and you will touch the horse in places that natural instinct demands he protect. Rather than just trying to overwhelm the horse until he submits, we will go through a process that allows the horse to accept things in stages so as to build confidence and trust in what we are doing. By doing this, we not only gain the benefit of making him feel safe about the particular object we are working with at the time, but we also teach the horse how we want him to respond to any new object or touch we might eventually approach him with. This lesson is for the ‘trained’ and untrained horse. For the trained horse, this lesson can help you identify and eliminate small problem areas. If your horse is great except with ???,

you can use this lesson to help him cope. For the untrained horse, it is the perfect way to create a solid foundation upon which to build your dream horse. You can follow this process to introduce any new item to your horse throughout its lifetime. We left off with the first touch on the horse’s face at the end of the last article. You may find that your horse still has substantial fear and does not want to accept your touch. Take as much time as needed here. I can tell you from personal experience that skipping the layers of emotional training in the beginning can lead to injuries that will haunt you for the rest of your life. Be patient and know that the time it takes to build a solid foundation for confidence at this stage will speed the training time later. The horse must be absolutely comfortable with having his head touched and handled. A head shy horse can hurt you when you least expect it and can be very dangerous to ride. I continue working with the horse to touch him on the face first. Only rarely will I touch the horse on the neck or shoulder

June Trail Clinic June 12-14

My goal is to connect you with your horse by teaching you sensible, hands-on exercises that will reduce frustration and make your partnership possible. You are personally invited to come and join this fun-filled, incredible journey that will make your goals a reality!

first. In those rare cases, I use it as a starting point to get to the head. When your horse will calmly allow you to pet it between the eyes with one hand and will turn and face you when you walk away, it is time to add more hands and more places. First I will add two hands to working the head before beginning to advance down the body. Then begin to work your way around the head, down the neck, sides and rump of your horse in small increments. Don’t stay too long before walking away and approaching again. As you progress, leave at different angles from the horse beginning with staying towards the front and progressing until you can walk almost directly behind him and he will turn and face. Also move to different parts of the pen when you walk away. Asking the horse to move his feet by turning to face you will keep him from becoming “locked up” in one place. Every time you approach, it is the beginning of a new mini lesson. Every time you walk away, giving the horse a release, is the end of that mini lesson. So you can work for as long or as short as time allows and are never in a bad place to stop. By not staying too long before moving away, you are getting the horse better and better about being approached which can be scary for some horses. A lot of horses that are hard to catch are really just afraid of being approached. We go out to get them with halter in hand and chase them, tease them, try to corner them until we can get the halter on. Then they act like they are totally comfortable with us. If training the emotions requires them to be raised some and then brought right back down, then up, then down, how many times does this standard way of catching your horse raise the emotions? Basically one time! And depending on how mad we get in the process, the emotions for both of us can get very high, stay up way too long and then only come down after we have caught the horse, (depending on

how frustrated we are and how much we mistreat the horse once we’ve caught it!) So a by product of doing the approach, rub with the hands and walk away many, many times as the horse learns to accept your approaching and catching him. As you go over his body from head to toe with many times of leaving and returning, he will probably even start following you and you will see big changes in his interest level. When he understands that you are looking for a specific response, he will do his best to find it to get more of your praise and attention. A few words of caution need to be added. Some horses show no warning signs before they bite, strike or kick. Remember, you make the final decision as to whether or not you are going to work with your horse. If you know that your horse has some dangerous areas be sure to have someone watching you or get a professional to start the horse on these lessons. You will be working from head to tail. Keep your body in a safe position. As you work toward the rear of the horse, you should pick up on signs of the horse being uneasy. Look for jumpiness, ear pinning, belly kicks, throwing the head, etc. If you see any negative behaviors, STOP and rethink the lesson before you continue. You may want to add a halter or bridle with a snaffle and lead line to have control of the nose and drive the hip away. Or you may want to use a long whip to start touching the hind legs at first to check for kicks. Whatever the case, do not put yourself in a compromising position. Another thing to note is a horse who always seems to have his hind leg cocked on the side you are on. Usually we associate this with being very relaxed but you have to look at the whole horse. If other parts of the horse like the ears, level of the head, tension of the body, etc., do not look relaxed, the cocked leg is like a cocked gun. The horse will shift its weight off of the leg so it is easier to strike if it feels the need to protect itself. Next article, we will begin to add some of our objects. You will teach the horse to ‘spook in place’ which is one of my favorite lessons for safety out on the trail or in the show arena. Until then, stay safe and enjoy your horse…….Ann Kirk Ann Kirk is available for Sensible Horsemanship Clinics or Workshops in your area. Biosecurity for equines

By Freya Stein, DVM, DACVIM (LAIM), McKinlay & Peters Equine Hospital

horsemanship

While horses do not carry COVID-19, the current pandemic drives home the importance of biosecurity as a form of preventative healthcare. At some point, we will all be able to move around again, and will enjoy riding with friends and heading to shows. Barns will be bustling with activity, which means that our horses will Freya Stein, DVM, DACVIM (LAIM) also be in contact with each other. Unfortunately, with this happy return to contact also comes the potential for equine disease transmission. Hopefully, you have now become more familiar with how communicable diseases are spread through respiratory secretions, fecal-oral contamination, direct contact from horse to horse, and indirect contact through contamination of objects (these are called fomites). While vaccination is important in preventing some communicable diseases, no vaccine is 100% effective, and there are pathogens against which we do not have vaccines (particularly the gastrointestinal pathogens).

The most common circumstances for communicable disease transmission are when a new horse is introduced into a herd, and when horses from different places commingle. Fortunately, many basic biosecurity principles are universal, and you can apply some of the same concepts you’ve recently learned with COVID-19 prevention to equine communicable disease prevention. Here are a few easy practices to keep in mind in show/ clinic/boarding barn situations: • Wash your hands between handling different horses – even if it’s just a pat on the nose. • Wash tack (especially bits and bridles) when sharing between horses. • Do not use common water troughs in public places, and do not share water buckets or hay nets with horses from another stable. Make sure not to dip the end of the hose in water buckets when filling them. • Social distancing is still important between horses - respiratory secretions can disperse over 20 feet from the source. Additionally, the following protocol should be used when introducing a new horse to your herd: • Keep the new horse isolated for a minimum of 21 days. If the new horse appears sick, the isolation clock should extend an additional 21 days PAST the last sign of illness. Isolation means a minimum of 30 feet between the new horse and others. • Handle the new horse (including feeding and stall or pen cleaning) AFTER the other horses at home. • Ideally, wear different outerwear and use different tack with the new horse. Remember that your clothes and equipment can be very effective fomites. • Place two shallow tubs to use for shoe and cleaning equipment disinfection outside the horse’s enclosure. The first tub should be filled with water, and boots/equipment are rinsed here after exiting the stall. Next, step in the second tub containing a chemical disinfectant – e.g. Lysol or Bleach (one part bleach to three parts water). • Wash your hands!

My first pony ride was in 1967. I was 18 months old. It must have stuck with me because I rode horses forever after that. I have been a professional in the equestrian industry since 1989 and my parents have supported my horseback riding activities all my life. In 2012, seeking that formerly ever present support, I shared with my mom my desire to get involved in Western Dressage. Imagine my surprise when she exclaimed “Western Dressage? That’s an oxymoron!” As the conversation proceeded, she came to realize that I had actually been practicing a form of horsemanship that is now being described by that moniker for at least twenty years. The term “dressage”, literally translated, means “to train” but in the equestrian world “dressage” has come to refer to the standard of riding and training practiced by those who put proper carriage, biomechanics and strength, thus a specific “rideability” in the horse, at the forefront of the development of a riding horse. When dressage principles are properly applied to our everyday western training the result is not circus tricks, it is not a dressage horse wearing a western saddle, it is not a western pleasure horse (of any breed) making circles in the dressage court. Rather, the result is unique, beautiful, harmonious and just plain good for western riding horses. That result is now a reality shown by the growing

success of the WD competition at the World Show level. WD is open and accessible to riders of all levels, and to any breed of horse, in fact at 2019 WDAA World Championship Show in Guthrie OK, 29 different breeds competed equally together at a single show venue – incredible! I am excited to report on the current developments in Western Dressage as the newest USEF discipline moves toward its eighth anniversary. I think WD has helped riders develop horses that are supple, responsive and light to ride, with free forward movement and good use of the classical principles. As I did in the beginning, I see Western Dressage as a viable alternative to western pleasure, gaming and rodeo sports. We continue to face the challenge of finding a balance between a classical approach to dressage training for western horses and the western tradition of loose rein riding, but good biomechanics and free forward movement have taken their place as important foundational values. This in turn has kept the training consistent with the classical principles, progressive, and beneficial to the horses. Even in

competition, Western Dressage is based on the training of the horse, not on the inherent gaits of the horse. I believe that Western Dressage has the potential to bring the best in western horsemanship together with classical training to produce a horse that is light, balanced, calm and obedient, and capable of moving with ”throughness,” energy and expression in the gaits.

riders requires both a classical dressage background and experience with many different breeds in both dressage and western riding.

This still developing discipline is very exciting to many riders, trainers, breeders and exhibitors, who choose horses of all breeds as our partners, and who, for various reasons, prefer to sit in stock type saddles. Good dressage training benefits any horse/rider combination in any discipline and western dressage will open doors for education and increased understanding of classical training previously closed to many. The organizations spearheading the development of WD are dedicated to finding common ground between the two disciplines, educating riders from all backgrounds, and to making dressage concepts accessible to western riders. One simple but primary problem in defining WD involved the integration of western riding and dressage gaits. In the beginning, WD took place in the Morgan show world. Because of this, the way of going in the horses was not as consistent with the classical principles as it is today. Now, a USEF rulebook and official Western Dressage tests are designed to reflect that classical training. Today’s WD tests are progressive, symmetrical, and designed for all levels of the horses and riders. They include both working and free gaits, lengthening of stride, collection and dressage movements like shoulder-in and half-pass. Tests that emphasize balance, bending and lightness, use of progressive exercises, transitions, circles and changes of direction improve the horses’ responsiveness, and help riders develop timing and coordination of the aids. As WD has evolved and come out of its infancy what we see in the competitive rings, especially at the World Show level, is much more consistent with training that follows classical ideals. Public presentations and media exposure that are inconsistent within the discipline as well as with the principles of dressage (modern, classical OR practical) have made it difficult for the riding public to know what the western dressage ideal should be. However, it is important for enthusiastic followers understand that today’s western dressage horse reflects a successful combination of training from two distinct worlds and that the standardization we looked for in the early days is happening. WD “westernizes” dressage without minimizing the importance of the training pyramid or sacrificing the principles that are fundamental to classical dressage. It is my hope that Western Dressage continues to develop as a unique discipline in this country and around the world, one that is distinct from dressage and differentiated from other western riding styles. A comment from a rider at a recent clinic summed it up quite nicely when a young USDF dressage competitor spoke about the Western Dressage that is happening in the barn where she rides: “I think that the Western Dressage should not have the form of a flat and on the forehand horse, or a running, pulling modern dressage horse, but like what ******** was doing on her horse the other day. That was pretty! Riding that kind of trot, also, makes me want to ride it and it may make other people want to ride it too.” Voilà, Western Dressage! On The edge Of COmmOn SenSe

team roping handicap By Baxter Black, DVM

The sport (passion, or affliction) of team roping experienced a terrific boom in popularity years ago with the creation of an association called United States Team Roping Championships (USTRC). It established a classification system based on the roper’s skill. It is comparable to the handicapping system used in golf. The result is that ropers are able to compete with others of ‘equal ability’ therefore increasing their chances of winning. As a roper improves, his USTRC number increases. Classifications begin at #1 which is defined as True Beginner. These ropers have trouble controlling the rope and their horse at the same time. Inexperienced riders with little or no roping experience. And it runs up to #9 which is defined as National Finals Rodeo quality ropers. I joined USTRC and applied for a number. After reading the classification description, I realized they didn’t go far enough. There are some handicaps, quirks and flaws that deserve special numbers. I suggested these additions:

#3/8 – One who can rope the dummy standing on a barrel, behind his back, between his legs, from the front seat and blindfolded, but couldn’t rope a live elk in an eight foot stock tank if his life depended on it. #.0025 – Ropers who have been at it several years yet seem to have no aptitude for the sport. Still don’t grasp basic concepts like nodding for the steer. #.5 – Those cowboys condemned to always ride green, spooky, maladjusted “in training” horses. Although they might be fairly good ropers, it never shows between the pitching, squeals and cheers from the crowd. #2 ¾ - Consistently poor ropers but so creative at inventing excuses that they deserve some credit. “Did you see how close that was? I had ‘em both, I saw. Then the loop must have snagged on a gum wrapper and it broke my concentration just as my horse switched leads, and in this humidity…blah… blah…blah…” #1/4 – Left-handers who rope right-handed. Easily spotted by the slight hesitations, looks of confusion and facial tics. #1/8 – Left-handers who rope left-handed. Heelers who spend their life trying to get in position. #4F – Usually mature ropers who suffer rotor cuff injuries, bursitis, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome or other maladies that result in unusual roping styles. Such as one swing, wince and toss it like they’re trying to get a booger off their finger. # 10+ - Poorly dressed cowboys, ridin’ scruffy horses needin’ a mane roachin’ and tail pullin’, carrying a rope that looks like it spent the winter holdin’ down tarps, bummin’ Copenhagen and wanting to sleep in yer trailer, who can use a rope better than most of us can write our name. www.baxterblack.com
