it’s time for the 37th annual gallop stallion services auction It’s just around the corner! Whatever you do, don’t miss this year’s Gallop Stallion Service Auction presented by Rhodes River Ranch and held at Northern Quest Resort & Casino on Sunday, January 26th. Doors open at 11am, and the event will begin at 12 Noon PST. This gives plenty of time for both our National and International bidders to call in their bids! All stallions & auction items will be displayed on 30’ screens inside the Pavilion at Northern Quest. Plus the Auction will be broadcast live on our website, www.GallopAuction. com so bidders can call in their bids and talk to an operator.

Back for this years 2020 Opening Ceremony comes well noted singer, writer, drummer and composer Jesse Quandt. Jesse started playing guitar and singing at the age of four. Being strongly influenced by classic, outlaw country, and classic rock, he thrived in learning from the greats. Adding drums to his repertoire, Jesse became well versed in jazz as well as classical, but never let go of his country roots. Shortly after the start of the war in Iraq, Jesse put his musical aspirations on hold and joined the Army. He served just shy of ten years. No matter the post, he never went anywhere without his guitar. On his final overseas tour,
Griffin. She is a classically trained violinist. Justine is a local violinist born and raised in Spokane. Justine started playing the violin at the age of ten-years old. She played for the Spokane Youth Symphony as a child and Gonzaga University Orchestra during her junior year in High School. Her passion is playing improvisation with a little fiddle and a wide range of genres from rock, to country, to pop. All of this excitement and support helps the Gallop Stallion Services Auction meet its primary goal of raising funds to help the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Inland Northwest continue their mission of helping hundreds of families. Before they could fully comprehend what was happening, the family was on their way to Spokane, far from home, for treatment. With the help of compassionate medical providers and surrounded by family, Nathan waged a courageous battle with cancer including surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation. Ronald McDonald House of the Inland Northwest provides temporary lodging, comfort and support for families with children accessing medical services. They additionally support related efforts to improve children’s health. The Ronald McDonald House is much more than a room to stay in. When families are close to the hospital, this facilitates more time with their child and more frequent interaction with their clinical care team which helps them better participate in the care decisions. Additionally, families staying at the house have free laundry facilities; shuttle rides to and from the hospital, frequent meals prepared by volunteers through our Make-AMeal program and much more.

Over 60% of the families who stay at the house had no idea that they would need the Ronald McDonald House Charities services just 24 hours prior to arriving. Many arrive via helicopter or ambulance. Approximately 57% of the families staying at the house with a premature infant or newborn with complications, 13% to receive specialized oncology treatment for their children, and 30% due to trauma or another illness. Families are able to stay at the Ronald McDonald House free of charge thanks to the generosity of events such as the Gallop. A family’s average length of stay is 26 days.

Exciting news is about to happen for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Inland Northwest! A new expansion will be completed this January/February. More families than ever were seeking lodging at RMHC of the Inland Northwest’s current 22-room House. On average, 14 families a day were being turned away and placed on a waiting list. A ten-year historic data revealed up to 336 families were turned away making a 5,110 nights lodging shortage annually. A capital campaign to raise funding was put into action. In 2018, after strategic planning, site exploration and community input, RMHC of the Inland Northwest broke ground on their big dream: a second House right across the street will now be opening in January 2020. This second house will be 2,410 nights of lodging per families. It will include 34 designed for long-term stays;

Cow Disturber By Baxter Black, DVM
McGraw posed an interesting question. If a cowboy herds a herd of cattle, we call him a herder. If a sheepman herds a flock of sheep, he’s still a herder. Why isn’t he called a flocker? Oley has always referred to himself as a cow disturber. I think that is an accurate description of what cowboys do. The definition of disturb is: to annoy or disrupt. “Where ya goin’, Bill?” “I’m gonna go check the cows.” Which really means, “I’m gonna ride into the bunch, git’em all up, turn’em around and just generally annoy and disrupt them.” I grant there are occasions when we have a certain definite task in mind; i.e. “I’m gonna bring in that cow with the arrow in her side.” Or, “Saddle up, we’re pushin’ 2600 head of Longhorns to the sale barn in Bloomfield.” But most of the time we’re just disturbing them. Like doting parents or cat fanciers, we take any excuse to fuss over the
critters in our care. It’s a wonder whitetail deer or jackrabbits aren’t extinct with no one to molest them regularly. If we were honest with ourselves, our language would be more forthright. The cattle foreman in the feedlot might give his instructions like this… “Jason, I want you to enter the first pen in the north alley. Unsettle the steers by sitting quietly for a moment. Next upset them by approaching. Confuse them by weaving back and forth, agitating and irritating them constantly. Badger each one until they’ve all gotten up and milled around. Once you’re convinced you’ve stirred them up sufficiently, you may go disturb the next pen.” Or, the cowman might say to his wife, “Darlin’, while I’m at the board meeting I’d like you to torment the heifer in the barn lot every 20 minutes. She’s trying’ to calve. Peek over the fence and bother her. Shine the light in her eyes to break her concentration. Worry her as often as needed, and when I get back I’ll slip in and frighten her into calving.” In fairness, we are doing what all good shepherds do. We watch over our flocks because that is our calling. We stand guard in case any should need our help. But if truth-inlabeling is ever applied to our job descriptions, we will have to be more specific about what we do. So the next time somebody asks what you do, try one of these on for size: herd rearranger, bull nudger, sheep panicker, mule cusser, equine perplexer, steer beautician, hog motivator, Holstein therapist, cow companion, dog shouter or cowboy coddler. www.baxterblack.com
