The history of the Limited Edition Big D Blankets started in 1989. Coordinator Barb Turner and Glenn Drake, owner of Big D Blankets began brainstorming the creation of rare limited edition blankets for the auction! Their idea became a reality, followed by the additional support of Gallop’s Event Souvenir Program Artist, Tod Locke. Glen and Tod went on to create a design that was unique each year from 1990 to 2002. The retail value of these one of a kind blankets are valued at $800 by Big D, selling yearly between $525 to $2500 over the course of 13 years. This year one of those rare Limited Edition Blankets found its way back to the Gallop Auction to raise money towards Gallops mission. The Limited Edition Blanket is in a beautiful red base color, with a one of a kind piping in white and gold. On the right corner is embroidered ‘Sponsored by: Big D 1996 ~ 1 of 3.’ In 1996 the Big D Gallop Limited Edition Blankets were still being silk screened. The design depicts two rearing horses holding a snaffle bit between them. A stunning white dove holding a gold star in its mouth is in the center of the broken snaffle bit. The blanket was symbolic of the Wishing Star Foundation’s white dove logo, Gallops rearing horse logo, and a snaffle bit being held by the stallions representing

The Dog and the Rabbit Have you ever been embarrassed by yer good dog? Me either! I’ve got a good dog. An Australian shepherd with one blue eye and I believe he loves me. I believe I love him. He’ll go with me anywhere. When I say, “You wanna go?” He don’t ask, “Where you goin’? Goin’ to the game store?” No, he don’t care, he just wants to go. And did you ever notice that it don’t matter whether you been gone five minutes or five days, yer dog is so glad to see ya. Can you think of a single human being that is that glad to see ya? Yer fixin’ to leave, walk out to the pickup and forget somethin’, so you run back inside. Yer dog licks yer hand. Your spouse says, “I thought you left!” I’ve got a neighbor. A good neighbor. And when you live on the outskirts, a good neighbor is someone who lives just the right distance away. Now I’m sittin’ out on the back porch one afternoon in my porch swing. It’s about 2:30. I’m done workin’. I’ve already thought up somethin’. I look out in the driveway and there’s my good dog and he has got a rabbit...and you know how you can tell it ain’t a jackrabbit? They aren’t black and white, they don’t have them big floppy ears, and he has got this rabbit between his teeth and he’s thrashin’ him like a shark with a ham hock! There’s dirt and leaves and brush and gravel flyin’ all over. I jumped up and grabbed that rabbit! “Go git in the pickup you *#@^...!” That rabbit looked bad. Looked like he caught on fire and somebody put him out with the weedeater! I ran in the house and run the tub full of warm water. Tested it with my elbow. Then I got some of my wife’s good shampoo. She gets it at the Holiday Inn, it ain’t that big a deal. I sudsed him up twice then moussed him with my daughter’s mousse. Made him sticky. You could thwack him on the tile, peel him off like Velcro. Then I run upstairs to the laundry and put him in the dryer. When he came out he was fluffy, looked like an electrocuted porcupine! I carried him to my neighbor’s house. Sure enuf, the last hutch on the end was cocked open and it was empty. I took that rabbit and folded him...into a rabbit position. Put a smile on his lips. all three of ‘em. Gave him a camel filter and leaned him up against the wire. I went back to the house and commenced to rockin’. ‘Bout a quarter after five I saw my neighbor drive up, she got out, went through the house and came out the back wearin’ her covies. She started down that long line of rabbit hutches. Talkin’ to ‘em. Singin’ ‘em little rabbit songs. “Here comes Peter Cottontail, hoppin’ down the bunny trail...” All of sudden I heard her scream! I ran over there, bein’ the good neighbor that I was, “What’s wrong? What’s wrong?” “My rabbit,” she cried. I looked in the cage and the poor little duffer had fell over. One ear broke off. It didn’t look good. Ann Kirk Sensible Horsemanship Hello to all the men and women, young and old, who read the Horse Previews Magazine. I trust you’ve survived the holidays with grace. By the time you read this, it should be about over and things will be getting back to normal (whatever that is!) It is the beginning of a brand new year and a new season and I look forward to sharing it with you. I realized I have been writing articles now for nearly 10 year and I am grateful to Horse Previews Magazine for giving me this opportunity to share what I have learned with all of you. Let me start by saying, I welcome questions. If I know what you’re interested in, I can better address the issues relevant to you. But, for the benefit of those who don’t know much about me, I would like to introduce myself and detail a few events that have brought me to where I am today as a trainer. My training changed dramatically in just a couple of years and it is nothing short of miraculous to me how it all came to be. I was born in Chewelah, WA and was raised on a dairy farm in the Springdale area. I was the 7th of 8 children (7 girls and 1 boy) and we each had our own horse to ride. I grew up working cattle, herding goats, checking fences and riding like a wild woman almost every day. I can remember riding by myself by the time I was 3. I broke my arm at 6 when I fell off and the horse stepped on me. I had the fastest horse in the herd and we raced often. It was a great way to grow up.
My goal is to connect you with your horse by teaching you sensible, hands-on exercises that will reduce frustration and make your partnership possible. You are personally invited to come and join this fun-filled, incredible journey that will make your goals a reality!
From as far back as I can remember, I wanted to make enough money working with horses to justify having them. I loved the challenge of riding a new horse. Whereas, my other sisters were satisfied to ride their own, I was often in trouble for riding their horses without permission. I didn’t want them to ride mine, of course, but I had a hard time resisting the feel of a new one under me. When I would go to other people’s places, I usually had to try all of their horses. And if they told me one was a bit unruly, well, that was the one I just had to ride. I wasn’t much good at training then, but I sure loved to ride. I started my first horse at age 14. My dad was handy with horses and he helped me. She was a dark Palomino QH named Goldie and she taught me a lot about young horses. I definitely caught the bug for training and began reading everything I could get on the subject. I trained a few here and there for the next several years but it wasn’t until I married my husband, Jim, that I began training full time. It was still largely trial and error (lots of error!) until the year someone gave me a copied copy of John Lyons’ “Round Pen Reasoning”.

As I watched him maneuver the horse in the pen with no physical attachment, I was mesmerized. And hearing him explain the reasoning behind what he was doing was like turning on a light and finally seeing what I had been struggling to understand for years. It all made perfect sense to me and I could not wait to test it out. Needless to say, I was totally fascinated when I could copy what John did with the same results. Though I spent many hours untangling my rope as I learned how to throw it and get it rewound, I could not get enough. I am still amazed, hundreds of horses later, at the simplicity of making that connection with a horse. Jump ahead nearly 20 years to 2005 and I’m at Ride the West where Josh Lyons is one of the featured Clinicians. Just to go and watch for 3 days was sure to be great! But little did I know the chain of events that would start on that weekend. First, I found out he was taking sign-ups for a 3-day clinic to be held locally in July. The cost was out of my reach until a friend volunteered to pay half if I would use her horse. Wow! This was great! If that would have been all, it would have totally changed my level of training with the exercises I learned in those 3 days. But, there was much more. Before the clinic was over, Josh told me of a pilot program he was doing and offered me 4-weeks of private lessons. These would focus on the aspects of a reining horse with flying lead changes, spins, stops, rollbacks, etc. I was very excited for I had occasionally had to turn down horses due to my lack of education and practice in fine-tuning, so this was another huge step for my future. It also was necessary if I was to pursue my goal of doing clinics where I could teach more people to connect with their beloved horses.

Next step was finances and the horses to use for this special opportunity. I was to get 2 horses ready by teaching them the lessons learned in the 3-day clinic. Added to this was cantering on both leads and conditioning for the long sessions to come. I spent 3 months, 4-5 days a week, an hour per horse per day riding and working these horses. One of the horses, a 6-year old Thoroughbred/Walker cross mare, I had just gotten from my mom. I was to find her a new home because she would buck whenever she got scared. I had bred and trained this filly and she had bucked me off 4 times over the years. I was at a lose as to what I would do with her. Well, the timing was perfect and so was she. I was ready when November rolled around and Josh came up for the first 2-week session. We worked hard for 2 weeks, he left for 3 while I practiced and then he came back for 2 more weeks. I had never worked so hard trying to learn new things about training. It was tough on the horses for they had to be pushed far harder than normal. The weather the last 2 weeks was miserable for everyone. It was during the real cold spell in December of 2005. But it was worth it all. What I accomplished and now can pass on to others was worth every minute working and every dollar spent. When it was over, I had become one of the first two to complete the Josh Lyons’ Accreditation Program. What an honor! I have since been teaching clinics, giving lessons and doing training with greater results then ever before. I have also become fast friends with one of the Northwest’s finest people, Susan Rae, and she blessed me with the opportunity to participate at Ride the West as a clinician and to train for her. I constantly tell her I owe her my life and cannot express how grateful I am for all her support. Her show was incredible and offered the horse community so much! In closing, I owe many thanks to all of you who have supported me in this quest both financially and verbally. I hope to pass on these the wonders of sensible horsemanship to all who will let me, so you can find an even more fulfilling relationship with your horse. He started out doing farm calls in a Ford Econoline Van from his garage on Green Bluff. Dr. Bob Peters, McKinlay & Peters Equine Hospital We have changed and grown along the way. Hopefully in another 25 years Dr. McKinlay & Dr. Peters will be a couple of old retired codgers that stop by occasionally to chat with the people who still remember us and smile about what we started. This whole 25 Year Anniversary thing made me feel, well old first of all, but also reflective. What has changed in the past 25 years in equine veterinary medicine? The more I reflect on it, the more I realize the changes have been vast and dramatic. I’m not just talking about MPEH here. I’m mostly thinking about equine medicine and surgery. We have changed from a one doctor, on his own, practice to 6 doctors, two clinics, and 30+ total employees. So how, you ask, could equine medicine have changed more than that?
First of all, how the horse itself is viewed has changed dramatically. A quarter century ago the majority of our clients still viewed the horse primarily as an economic investment. Most decisions about treatment and care of a horse were directly tied to its economic value. It was common in those days to hear “No way I’m gonna do that Doc. This horse ain’t even worth that much.” Don’t forget, I said most, certainly not always. Today the horse is much more commonly viewed as a pet, and even a family member. Thus, its actual economic value is not as heavily considered with respect to its care. Now, we are told every day to do whatever is best for the horse. In spite of the fact that very often the economic value is less than the treatment costs will be. Obviously, it is a great improvement for the horse to be viewed as a loved family member rather than a tool for a job. That has been a - if not the - driving factor in the advancement of equine veterinary medicine over the past 25 years. And what has driven that change? The majority of our clients used to be lifelong horse owners, and predominantly male. Today a huge percentage are women that got into horses after the kids were gone. These ladies now have time and money to devote to their horse, and they are devoted. Actually, until I sat down to write this article I never considered the connection between

the increasing roles of women in horses being tied to the horses increased well-being. I suppose one could argue that women have driven many of the advancements in horse care. I say congratulations ladies and keep up the good work! I could go on and on about the medical advancements. We used to have only plain film x-ray equipment for diagnostic purposes. We now have digital radiography, digital ultrasound and even MRI. There are many, many more but since January and February are dental months I will focus a little more on dentistry. I believe the most dramatic changes in equine medicine for the horse have come in the field of dentistry. (Disclaimer, I am biased on this one.) The good news is- that is GREAT news. But, to temper it a little it had the furthest to come. Twenty-five years ago equine dentistry was in the dark ages. It had almost no changes between the 1800’s and the 1990s. When I started I literally had one dental instrument. It was an old yellow handled swivel head Thompson float. I did any “floating” that needed to be done with that one instrument. I didn’t even have a mouth speculum. Today we have literally hundreds of instruments at our disposal. We have power tools, lights, speculums, advanced imaging systems both endoscopic and x-ray. We have a periodontal unit for periodontal pockets, diastemas and cavities. Yes, we fill cavities. Over my career, equine dentistry has completely switched from reactionary to preventative. Back in the day, we only did teeth on older horses that were losing weight or dropping feed. Now we start working on their teeth early to prevent
problems later. This has extended the life and the quality of life of our equine companions. I am happy, gratified and proud to be a part of that. So give your horse a little love and have their mouths checked out in the next couple of months. You and they will be glad you did. Places to Ride Near Spokane By Ken Carmichael, Back Country Horsemen - Ponderosa Chapter Many of us have enjoyed riding at the Riverside State Park Equestrian Area. Besides supporting miles of equestrian trails throughout the park it provides such amenities as 20 campsites designed for equestrians, 60 foot round pen, trail course and 140x240 arena with announcing stand. A public address system is also available. This makes an ideal facility for many of our equestrian events and training our horses. Some of you were at the Ponderosa Back Country Horsemen Scavenger Hunt in September 2016 and 2017. The Exchange and Horse Previews were major sponsors of this popular event. This is just an example of the events that are held and can be held at these facilities.

As more equestrians use the area for personal training and riding, and events are held there is a demand for additional amenities. To augment PONDEROSA CHAPTER the arena we can use bleachers. To start with we can put one section up next to the announcers stand and grow from there as the demand warrants. How do we get this done? As with all projects someone needs to take the lead. Back Country Horsemen did this to build the facilities that are there now. What we are looking for now is another group, or individual, to take the lead in getting bleachers installed. What Does This Entail? • Coordination with Riverside State Park • An investigation of what will meet the needs and what the area can accommodate • Research of bleachers that are available on the market • Funding. I think that the Back Country Horsemen and Riverside State Park Foundation will help contribute to this but we will need additional support • Purchase of the bleachers • Installation of the bleachers There are many ways to accomplish the above tasks. It can be an individual, a Boy Scout eagle project, an equestrian group or a combination of groups. But whatever it is, someone must take the lead and follow it through. Riverside State Park provides a wonderful venue for equestrians. We want to ensure that it continues to provide the type of facilities that equestrians want and need to support the equestrian community. Work Party at Escure Ranch By Ken Carmichael, Back Country Horsemen - Ponderosa Chapter
When the Ponderosa chapter of Back Country Horsemen (PBCH) was formed we developed a strong working relationship with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). With this relationship PBCH agreed to help BLM by keeping our eyes and ears open as we traveled and camped on the BLM land, reporting back to BLM about what we experienced. In addition, we want to help maintain and improve the trails and facilities. As part of this arrangement the Ponderosa chapter used materials supplied by the BLM to build and install a kiosk at the BLM Escure Ranch (Rock Creek) Recreation Area. This larger kiosk replaces a small kiosk at the trailhead. This will allow more trail information to be provided. In addition, the smaller kiosk will be moved to the equestrian campground where it will provide more specific information about care and maintenance of the equestrian facilities. In addition,
during 2017 PBCH helped spread wood chips on the equestrian campground. The Escure Ranch south of Sprague Washington, at over PONDEROSA CHAPTER 12,000 acres, provides excellent opportunities for equestrians, hikers, bikers and hunters. Over the years PBCH has helped move trailhead fences and build corrals and highlines. BLM has provided stock water, picnic tables, fire pits and a restroom. BLM provides recreational opportunities on sites over most of eastern Washington. The BLM website is www.blm. gov. PBCH appreciates and supports all of the opportunities BLM provides for equestrians. Distribution
Over 7500 copies of Horse Previews are distributed quarterly in Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Montana and British Columbia. Pick up your FREE copy early at your western, tack, feed, farm & horse supply stores. Distribution is the first Thursday of January, April, July and October. Please contact us if you are interested in becoming a distribution point.
Special Position
All ads are positioned run of paper (ROP) at standard rates, without preference. Ads requesting premium or specific position other than ROP will incur an additional 15% charge.
Deadline
Ads must be reserved by the 15th of the preceding month to be published in the next quarterly magazine. We are often able to accept ads a few days after the 15th, so please contact us if you require extra consideration.
