It’s Time for the 33rd Annual Gallop Stallion Services Auction Just around the corner, scheduled for Sunday, January 31, 2016 at the Northern Quest Resort and Casino, the Gallop Stallion Service Auction annual event takes place. Presented by Rhodes River Ranch, the upcoming auction will mark its 33rd year! The event will kick off at 12:00 noon, PST, enabling national and international locations to participate in the bidding. With all of this excitement, don't forget the primary mission. All net proceeds from the Gallop Stallion Services Auction go to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Spokane, enabling them to continue serving hundreds of families. Imagine if your child was sick. What would you do if you had to fly to a hospital in a different city far from your home? Would you know where to go? When you arrived at the hospital, where would you put your extra clothes? Where would you shower? Where would you wash your clothes? Who would you turn to for help? These and many other questions are all answered daily by the volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Spokane. Families are provided temporary lodging, comfort and support while their children are accessing medical services. These basic needs are met while they help their children overcome their medical struggles. The House provides a consistent and caring helping hand, lessening the mental and financial strain on the families. It allows them to focus on the most important thing ... supporting their children. Such is true of Jocelyn’s family … It started with her hands. Jocelyn Carr, a healthy, happy 9-year-old girl was enjoying a lazy summer day until suddenly she started losing the feeling in her hands. Soon, the paralysis spread upward in her arms. Terrified, Cody and KoLiss, Jocelyn’s parents, took her to the Clark Fork Valley Hospital in their hometown of Plains, MT. From there, she was quickly transferred to Kalispell, MT. Doctors told the Carr family that Jocelyn had contracted Guillian-Barre syndrome, a rare disorder in which the immune system attacks the nerve system, causing paralysis. By the time the family reached the hospital in Kalispell, the paralysis had spread throughout Jocelyn’s body and paralyzed her from the neck down. Due to doctors’ grave concerns about the disease’s attack on Jocelyn’s respiratory system, Jocelyn was put on a Life Flight to Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital the next morning. KoLiss went with her. She would not return home for another four months. Jocelyn was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital on July 3, 2014. Doctors immediately intubated and put her on a ventilator. “I was really scared when I couldn’t breathe. The tube was really uncomfortable and just really, really scary.” During that time,

Cody and KoLiss slept on the waiting room couch, trying to piece together a plan to keep their family together. A month after they arrived in Spokane, a room opened up at Spokane’s Ronald McDonald House. At the Ronald McDonald House, the Carr family started to regroup after the initial shock of Jocelyn’s diagnosis. Jocelyn’s younger sisters had space to run and play outside, and KoLiss was able to cook the family meals at night. Although she and Cody took turns spending the night with Jocelyn so that she would never be alone, they had a place to come back and take a shower, have a nap, and care for themselves. Unfortunately, Jocelyn had to stay in the Intensive Care Unit until August 13. When she was released to St. Luke’s for rehab, she was permitted to leave for the 2-3 hours periods of time. She always requested to go to the Ronald McDonald House– even if it was just to have dinner or take a nap. Slowly, Jocelyn’s treatments began to work, and she began to regain movement in her upper body. Once she was able to eat normally, her first request was for a home-cooked meal. KoLiss ran over to the Ronald McDonald House and made her “mom’s breakfast”. It was a small piece of home for Jocelyn in an otherwise strange and scary world. When September came, Cody and the girls returned home to Plains for the beginning of school, and KoLiss stayed in Spokane with Jocelyn while she began intensive rehab at St. Luke’s. During this time, KoLiss appreciated the community that she found with other families. “It was really neat to talk to the other families and hear what they had to say. We are here for each other. We are each other’s support system.” Jocelyn’s recovery has been tough, physically and emotionally. She continues to work on her fine motor skills, especially in her hands. However, she has continued to approach each day with a sense of optimism and a fighting spirit. When asked about hopes for the future, she says “I just want to get back to normal. I want to be able to help with my sister’s hair.” Despite her circumstances, she has never lost perspective. “Being at the Ronald McDonald House, I realize that I’m pretty lucky. I’m getting better every day. HEART’s Cowboy Dressage Drill Team Made World Finals History By Michelle Binder-Zolezzi In November 2015, a local 501c3 non-profit organization called HEART (Healthy Equine Association for Rehabilitation and Training), made dreams a reality. Volunteers and youth riders have come together to create the “HEART Drill Team,” the first Cowboy Dressage Drill Team in the United States. Based at Relational Riding Academy in Cheney, the group practices three times per week and, with the help of generous donations, contributions and a huge fundraising campaign, successfully raised funds for the entire team to travel to Cowboy Dressage World Finals in Sacramento to perform. The most extraordinary thing is that most of the horses on the team are rescue horses. The motto “Making the impossible…. Possible” inspired volunteers and supporters to do just that. It took almost $10,000 to accomplish their goal of transporting 10 horses and riders along with a 12 member support staff made up of volunteers, spouses and parents to California. How? First, they started a concession called “Hot To Trot Horse Show Concessions” that traveled to local horse shows. Then, they sold a donated car, cookies and T-shirts, they gave pony rides at Del’s Feed and Farm Supply in Cheney several times during the
year, and raffled off 300 pounds of feed donated by Del’s for the purpose of raising those funds. In addition, a very generous matching donor ensured that the trip came to fruition. Jessica Robbibaro, a HEART volunteer and drill rider says “This was a great opportunity to work with a group of riders who just love horses and wanted to accomplish riding in this unique event. Raising the funds to get us there was rewarding and really helped pull the team together.” To help make the actual trip possible, local businesses came together in support with feed and bedding donated by The Country Store and North 40 Outfitters for the horses making the trip. Even show clothes were donated by 2 local tack stores, The Tack Trunk on Trent and Tack N More in Hayden, Idaho for one economically disadvantaged young rider. Consistent with HEART’s mission to improve the lives of young people, the HEART Scholarship program provided funding for the young riders to fly down to compete and perform at World Finals without missing more than one day of school. Ann Kirk Test the Connection Winter is the time of uncertain weather so it is fitting that we are going to be looking at ways to train our horses to control their uncertain emotions and natural responses to the winds and the wilds. You are going to be riding an animal that is in the same division as that white-tailed deer that runs off in a panic as a natural response to most anything unknown. Horses are far easier to domesticate than a deer but the tendency to save its life first and think later is still in its DNA. We have been working for months to gain basic control and to teach a conditioned response to pressure. We have been through a series of lessons in the round pen. Then we put the bridle on and worked through a set of exercises to connect the reins to specific body parts. We have sought to gain a soft, immediate movement from the hips, shoulders, neck and nose in response to the slack being removed from a rein. This has given us control of any foot in any direction. Wow! Sounds great! But how can we be sure we have made the connection strong enough to hold up under pressure? I need to be next to positive that when I apply the “brakes”, they will stop my horse. And when I “turn the wheel”, it will direct my mount just as expected. So I need to have a way of testing my “bit to body” connection to be sure the horse will respond no matter how emotional he gets about the environment around him. I can speak from experience (and far too many battle wounds) that it is not smart to assume all is well and just hope you can control any problem that might arise after climbing in the saddle. So let’s run

some tests. If I am going to ride a horse, it is not a matter of if but when something is going to come along that excites him. I would much rather control when that ‘something’ comes along rather than wait for the unexpected to happen. So, as a way of improving my bridle connection, I will present “emotional” situations to my horse while asking him to focus on the bridle lessons I have already taught. This way I can control how exciting the stimulus gets, how excited the horse becomes and when to raise or lower his emotions. And I can work through it to the desired end with out having to quit for fear of getting dumped off and hurt because I am already on the ground. To prepare for this lesson, gather a few things that you will use. Those of you who have been following these lessons will recognize this part from our round pen session on spooking in place. Some of my favorite objects are the lariat I use for the round pen lesson, a twin bed sheet, a towel or saddle blanket, a piece of plastic (small and large), a whip to attach the plastic to when ready and a saddle. The list could go on and on but you get the picture. Then you will want to arrange them in order from the

least scary to the most to make it easiest for the horse. The more correct responses you get, the faster your horse becomes solid and sure of himself. Put his bridle on and take him to an enclosed area. Warm him up by going through the entire Bridle Dance several times. In review, start on the circle with nose in and soft. Move the shoulder off on the diagonal, softening the nose to the shoulder point, back to the circle, disengage hip and back up. Switch sides and repeat. When he is warmed up and listening to you, get your first object which would most likely be the towel or the sheet folded rather small. Begin by just having the horse stand while you move the object around. If he moves, disengage his hip until he stands still. Then, remove the pressure of the object and praise him. Switch sides and repeat until you can rub the folded object all over him without him moving. You are not trying to scare him or get a big reaction. You are checking to be sure that if he gets scared, he will still listen to the bridle. Then begin to open the towel or sheet bigger and bigger until it is full size and you can touch him and flap it all around his sides, neck, rump, legs, etc. and he will not move. Remember to spend equal time on both sides and move his hip over each time you switch sides so he isn’t standing just because he is frozen in one spot. When he can handle the stimulus standing still, you are going to ask him to walk and deal with it. This can be a bit more challenging. As soon as you add movement, the horse has to increase his emotional control. With one hand, you are going to focus on having the horse give softly to the bit and move his feet accordingly as if you have nothing in your other hand. With the other hand,
you will slowly create some movement with the object. You don’t usually need to start with it folded but be willing to if necessary. Create just enough stimulus to get a slight rise in his emotions. Focus on his staying responsive and keeping his head at a relaxed level. Reduce the stimulus and disengage his hip to switch sides. If his reaction is not uncontrollable, keep the stimulus going at the same level until he gives you a good response before releasing this mental pressure. Remember, the more correct responses you get, the faster your horse becomes solid and sure. If he gets really excited, remove the stimulus and get him to give, relax and stop. He is telling you you did too much too soon. You are looking for the balance. You want to raise his emotions enough to gain ground but not enough to make him worse in the long run. Never attach any of the objects to him. If he should panic, either one of you could get seriously hurt. You can move onto the next object when it is next to impossible to get any emotional change with the one you are using while he is walking through the dance. Take your time and be creative. The stronger you build this lesson of responding to the bridle in spite of his environment, the safer he will be and the easier the rest of his training will progress. Don’t skimp on this phase of his work. This is also a great lesson for already broke horses who have spooking issues. Horses are amazing animals. They evoke in us the most profound of emotions, from mountaintop highs to gut-wrenching lows. As an equine veterinarian, I see people almost daily having to cope with the Dr. Bob Peters, loss of a cherished horse. McKinlay & Peters Equine Hospital As a lifelong horse owner myself, I and my family have had to deal with that kind of loss on many occasions. This past summer we lost a particularly special horse. Gator was out of the great stallion “Don’t Skip This Chip” and he truly was one of a kind. We began competing in Cowboy Mounted Shooting in the fall of 2001. At the time Gator was 4 years old and just greenbroke. He was the first horse I ever competed on in our sport. For many, many years he was my only competition horse. In our first full year together he won second place in the futurity division at our world championships in Scottsdale Arizona. Over the years together we won many class and overall titles. We won the Men’s Level 4 class at Worlds hosted at South Point in Las Vegas. Riding him took me all the way to Men’s Level 5.
At some point along the way my daughter Alisa “stole” him from me. At just twelve years old she began shooting off of him as a Ladies Level 1. She progressed quickly and won Ladies Level 2 at World’s in Amarillo, Texas two years later. Many people borrowed him over the years to compete. Some were brand new to the sport and he dutifully and patiently taught them the ropes. A close friend, Mark Zueger, even used him for an entire season as a Men’s 5. They won consistently while travelling all over the United States. Pretty much everyone in the Northwest knew Gator, so named because of his broad flat forehead. He was a complete sweetheart and as honest a horse as I have ever ridden. I know he ran thousands of stages, for me and others. I can honestly say he never cheated on a stage, whether in competition somewhere or at home practicing. After retiring him from competition, another dear friend took him for a year. He taught her young daughter to ride. He also allowed her 3 year old twins to brush his legs, pet him and sit on him. He would stand with his feet glued to the ground while they hugged his legs and crawled under him. In August, we lost Gator. It was very hard for our family. I should say “is” very hard. I’m still tearing up writing this four months later. Anyway, that experience prompted me to write a poem (see following page). I hope it will resonate with anyone who has lost a cherished horse. — Dr. Peters

Many times I’ve been asked the question “why?” A favorite horse had to die. The horse was loved and pampered so… Too often my answer is “I don’t know.” Our horses take ahold of our heart. It makes it so hard when we have to part. To the non-horse lover it’s impossible to explain… Why we do the hard work and endure the pain. “They become like family” is what we say. So, we work like dogs to get in their hay. We muck their stalls and brush their coat. Call the vet, it’s time for a float. We work long hours, then come home and ride. Win a ribbon on Sunday and swell with pride. They nicker to us and have such beautiful eyes… Hiding expenses requires worthwhile lies. Their soft muzzle and even their smell, Makes us feel deep in our soul that all is well. The world is off kilter when we lose that loved horse. We’re asked “Is it worth it?” the answer, of course! The 4 wheel lover that crashes his ride. Goes out the next day and gets a side by side. But when we lose a horse, we’ve lost so much more. A true friend, a family member, a part of our core.
Our family lost Gator, a truly amazing horse. He was very much loved, July 2015.

I heard one vet say he determined dose by the size of pistol grip syringe the cowboy had! Now Mac and I allow that horse shoes, Levis, pickup seats, jalepenos and spouses can be variable...to suit the owner or operator. But what possible excuse can be made to explain why in the past twenty years, car companies had manufactured thousands of different kinds of oil filters! Just tryin’ to find one that fits your truck in the car parts catalogue is like tryin’ to find a bareback riggin’ in a New Delhi landfill! Folding chairs, square headlights, computer parts, electrical connections, bolts, wood stoves, belt loops, haying equipment, gate hinges, tax regulations, hunting laws, political promises, economist’s predictions, legal loopholes all come in such a blithering array of shapes and sizes, that what you thought you had that might have worked, is now obsolete! I finally put together a complete collection of wrenches and sockets only to find that the world’s gone metric! D One D Dof my oft married friends finally solved his problem. I envy his ingenuity. Mac told me a harrowing tale about losing a loaded six horse trailer off the back of his pickup. He admitted he knew the ball was too small, but it wasn’t far to go, it was gettin’ dark, the kids were restless, it was a new moon, the tide was running out, his hat was too tight...whatever the excuse he needed to justify not changing the ball. I agree, noting that the hitch on my wood splitter was smaller than my stock trailer and I often had to make my daughter stand on the tongue when I moved the splitter around the place. We concurred that there are some things in life that should be standard size. A law should be passed that makes it illegal to build any contraption that took less than a 2” ball! Not only that, said Mac, plastic fittings! If you don’t have the exact coupling, you have to rig a cobbled together reducing, DD D enlarging, sliding, snapping or screwing menagerie of fittings to get you by ‘til you can get to town for just the right part! On December 5, 2015 the Back Country Horsemen of Washington Board of Directors approved the newest chapter in Washington State. The Ponderosa chapter, in Spokane, joins 32 other chapters in Washington to accomplish the Back Country Horsemen mission of keeping trails open. We are proud to join a service organization that works so hard to represent equestrians locally, in the state and nationally. The Ponderosa chapter adopted a set of Principles to support the BCH mission. These Principles include “Maintain a viable non-profit organization where all chapter members participate and contribute in one or more of the following: work parties, education, advocacy and/or supporting activities.” Each member is selecting responsibilities from a variety of mission oriented activities and support functions where they will contribute. Everyone will have skin in the game and be part of the team. Our Vision is that “Back Country Horsemen continues as a premier resource focused on keeping trails and related facilities open for equestrians”. Through our organizational and planning meetings we are well on our way developing relationships with land managers and other recreational groups, planning work parties, scheduling educational programs, developing an advocacy strategy and creating a fundraising strategy to help fund our important work. We are not leaving out the fact that we intend to have lots of fun with each other and our horses along the way.

Distribution
Over 7500 copies of Horse Previews are distributed quarterly in Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Montana and British Columbia. Pick up your FREE copy early at your western, tack, feed, farm & horse supply stores. Distribution is the first Thursday of January, April, July and October. Please contact us if you are interested in becoming a distribution point.
Special Position
All ads are positioned run of paper (ROP) at standard rates, without preference. Ads requesting premium or specific position other than ROP will incur an additional 15% charge.
Deadline
Ads must be reserved by the 15th of the preceding month to be published in the next quarterly magazine. We are often able to accept ads a few days after the 15th, so please contact us if you require extra consideration.
