IKEA OBJECT - INVESTIGATION ; TRANSFORMATION ; REDEFINING FUNCTION The first part begins with an investigation on a household object/item selected from the IKEA store. We are asked to reinvent or redefine the function of the object through our own “surgical” insertion to the object. Inevitably a new design language (conceptual and formal) will be developed via this formal transformation. Detailed drawings of the newly redefined object are to be recorded and it will form the conceptual basis of development for the second part of the studio.

STUDY IN DIFFERENT SCALES - MOVEMENT , PROGRAMS , FORCES Cheung Sha Wan is one of the oldest districts located in the western side of Hong Kong. It also lies along the western infrastructural link. It was once populated by garments and textile factories. Due to cheap China rent, Most factories operations have been relocated to further north of the border.. The site lies between the border of the industrial and residential area, which gives it an unique yet extreme location. With such an special location, site condition is analyzed in different extents and contents.

Study Model of Existing Building The Exisiting structural framework is mainly column and beam system. It aids a huge flexibility of the building’s function - storage and office rental, hence creating generic spaces each floor. The main circulation focuses in the centre where there are 4 lift cores. It is also studied about the circulation of the streets and how it is related back to the building.
BUILDING STUDY
THE NEW FASHION HUB - THE STUDY OF FASHION AND TEXTILE INDUSTRY With its uninterrupted large floor plate and heavy loading capacity, the factory as a building type is filled with potentials. Through Fashion programs, the project aims to conceptually link the WKCD to the south and the migrating manufacturing sector to the north. Nevertheless, it can also drive the fashion industry in both global and local extent. In order to establish the programs of the renovated building, research relating fashion industry is necessary , hence programming.
PROGRAM RESEARCH
PROGRAMS
fashion journalism Editorial critique, guidelines and commentary can be found in magazines, newspapers, on television, fashion websites, social networks and in fashion blogs. At the beginning of the 20th century, fashion magazines began to include photographs of various fashion designs and became even more influential on people than in the past. Over the past several years, fashion websites have developed that merge traditional editorial writing with user-generated content. Fashion Design "You also have to finish everything in a very short time," "Fashion is a product, but it should have creativity. Unlike ready-made garments, fashion requires the most up-to-date style! You have to match the trends that people are going for, think of the next thing which will become a trend three to six months later and predict what people like and are going to wear.” "You have to communicate with people, draw the things that you are thinking [about] and explain them in order to make them become reality" Media influence “People want to feel connected,” says Kelly Cutrone, owner of People’s Revolution and executive producer of reality TV series on Bravo Kell on Earth. “Ignoring the Internet [and social media] is madness,” says designer Diane von Furstenberg who has been advocating for transparency in the fashion industry for years. “We decided to have a presence because it was a very organic way for us to communicate online. And yes, we think about [transparency] but don’t worry too much. We try to keep the focus on the clothes that are in the store, or buy now and wear now, not what is on the runway. But people will always get access to that as well.”

PROGRAMS
PROGRAM STUDY
Study models in programming Massing models are made to test the arrangements of programs, including how the site forces affect it.
PROGRAM STUDY
Testing of Sketch models / massing models on site To understand more about the relationship between the site and the proposed form and program, 1:500 models are made in order to fit into the 1:500 site model to test out different aspect regarding the design. It is particularly useful when considering the surrounding fabric and linkage, as being one of the crucial factor that can determine both the programs and formal approach of the building.
THE IKEA PROJECT BASIS - THE NEW TRANSFORMATION DESIGN LANGUAGE Through the detailed recording of the transformation carried in project one, it forms the conceptual basis of development for the building design. Instead of brainstorming a new and unbased design method and formal concept, it is however for us to make use of the ideas and method we learnt from the “surgical insertion to the IKEA object. Through the similar approach done to the IKEA object to transform it from one function to another, and one form to another formal result, it provides a basis in establishing the method and concept in transforming the building as a renovation project.
TRANSFORMATION
The transformation of the building on basis of the IKEA project. Instead of doing literal and direct transformation of the Chair in Project one, the transformation of the building colaborate with programs, site forces and circulation which makes the renovation of the original building sensible and logical.
TRANSFORMATION
Programmatic transformation
TRANSFORMATION
Testing Models to investigate the formal composition, structural, envelop of the transformed building. The form is tested in different possible aspects of transformation, such as the bending slaps, the bending structure, the inclined structures, and also the weaving slab and facades. Using study models from conceptual level to more developed level, the space and form can be developed hence taken to a more detailed stage.
THE FATE OF FORM - TO BOND THROUGH TRANSFORMATION Being the Fashion Centre in promoting HK as a Fashion Hub, the renovation of the building lsolely relates back to the principal suggested by the formal transformation of Project one. Through the similiar yet more sensible moves, the building is believed to be transformed to reconnect the surrounding, the people and promote the Fashion as its programs.
