Will the Cougars start a new era on the upside? Don’t miss the elephant show. The Chester Cyclones are continuing their tradition of huge offensive linemen. They will depend on what’s happening up front. With Clemson-bound QB Tony McNeal and RBs Julius Pendergrass (Kentucky) and Brett Minter riding on the backs of their giants, expect big things. The Lewisville Lions have already faced their share of adversity, losing a beloved teammate and a popular cheerleader. But the losses
should make the team stronger because they will be playing in honor of the two friends who passed away. Also catch the quickchange show featuring the Indian Land Warriors. They moved up to Class AA this year and into a very strong region. Will they complete the change with minimal problems? They have the speed and athletes to do it. Both got to the Division I championship last year, and Dorman beat its rival. Count on both challenging this year. But pick Region 3-AAAA’s Gaffney to win it all behind talented QB DeEdward Burris. Region 3-AAAA is loaded with good teams, so another from the family, Northwestern, should make its third straight trip to the DII title game and bring home the gold this year. Goose Creek will be a speed bump, but the Trojans are going to score in bunches and always play good defense. BB’s state champ picks: DI — Gaffney; DII — Northwestern Class AAA 1. Berkeley 2. Crestwood Last year’s champion: Clinton Two to watch: Greenville, Airport Skinny: As far as the competition level goes, most Class AAA teams that get to the second of their five playoff rounds can play with any team in the state. Clinton, last year’s champ, seems to always be near the top as are Myrtle Beach and Daniel. But it just got tougher. Defending Class AAAA Division II state champ Berkeley and South Pointe, which won the same title in 2008, were moved down to Class AAA. Add those two to the mix and you have the makings of
one of the best postseasons in state history. BB’s state champ pick: Berkeley Class AA 1. Batesburg-Leesville 2. Dillon 2. Central 4. Manning 5. Lake City 6. Strom Thurmond 7. Belton-Honea Path 8. The best two guesses are for Batesburg-Leesville to take it all, with Central and Dillon close behind. This is the most wide open classification and any of its top 10 teams, maybe as deep as the top 12, could win. Lake City could be the spoiler. BB’s state champ pick: Batesburg-Leesville Class A 1. Abbeville 2. Chesterfield 3. Williston-Elko 4. Bamberg-Ehrhardt 5. Lamar 6. Blackville-Hilda 7. Calhoun County 8. Allendale-Fairfax 9. C.E. Murray 10. Ware Shoals Last year’s champions: Class A Division I: Chesterfield Class A Division II: Williston-Elko Two others to watch: Great Falls, Ninety Six Skinny: Division I has been ruled by coach Steve Taneyhill’s Chesterfield Rams. Could happen again this season, but a wrench has been thrown into the mix. Class AA powerhouse Abbeville dropped down and should be the Rams’ top obstacle to winning a fourth straight championship. And keep an eye on Lamar, Bamberg-Ehrhardt and Calhoun County. The pick here is for Williston-Elko to repeat in Division II. Lake View, Blackville-Hilda and Scott’s Branch will challenge. Air Trojans is ready to take off again and, based on last season, the runway is wide open. Senior QB Justin Worley committed to Tennessee and is back. He passed for 4,366 yards and 42 TDs last season. WR Robert Joseph is back after setting a single-game state record with 22 catches last season and the mark for catches in a season with 155. Stewart Hunt also returns at WR. Also back are OL starters Stephen Nance and Chad Burris.
This side of the ball is going to be hard to penetrate. Back are major college recruits Gerald Dixon and Rod Byers on the DL. The most veteran part of the team is the secondary, where Josh Shelton, Lamar Mitchell and Nick Cousar return. Collins Mauldin gives the Trojans three starters back on the DL. Opponents will have a problem deciding which DL to double-team or run away from.
Where to start? The Trojans started 1-5 last year and then caught fire on the way to their second straight Class AAAA Division II state championship game. They could make it three straight with the starters coming back, but there are some questions. The defense will be front and center early. That’s because the offensive line has one starter back. Only two WRs are back, and who will be the RB/SB out of the backfield? Should be interesting.

Everywhere you look, there’s talent on the field By Karl Lyles

Two down, many more to come. Local high school players are being courted by some of the nation’s best college coaches. From quarterback and defensive end to receiver and kicker, the rosters of local teams list players that likely will play on Saturdays and Sundays for years to come. Two players already have made their picks. First, we learned of Chester High School quarterback Tony McNeal, who verbally committed to play at Clemson. Then, Northwestern QB Justin Worley announced his commitment to Tennessee. That still leaves Northwestern’s Rod Byers and Gerald Dixon. We still don’t know about South Pointe’s Gerald Dixon. And everyone who cares about high school and college football in these parts are waiting to hear where Stallions’ defensive end Jadeveon Clowney will play. Clowney, rated the nation’s best high school player by several recruiting services, has the attention of all the big schools. South Pointe coach Bobby Carroll describes Clowney in detail; 6-foot-6, 250-pounder with linebacker speed and a 36-inch vertical leap. He runs a 4.49-second 40-yard sprint. He’s agile and flexible. Carroll saw Clowney as a 6-3 freshman and knew he had a chance to be a special player. “I never thought he’d be a No.1 recruit in the country,” Carroll said. “I have coached four players that have gone to the NFL and two that are in the SEC now. Good Lord willing, Jadeveon will be in the NFL one day.” Carroll said more than 90 college coaches have inquired about Clowney. All the coaches agree; Clowney is that good. Northwestern football coach Jimmy Wallace knows the recruiters’ needs and has a system in place that helps both the player and the college. A transcript, a resume and a DVD are readily available to colleges interested in his players. Wallace estimates 200 DVDs have gone out of his office this spring and summer. Chester’s Anthony Sterling is in his first season as head coach and third year with the Cyclones’ football team. He and former coach Maurice Flowers have churned out great football players. Chester has produced as many Division I college players than any local school the last three years. We cannot overlook South Pointe kicker Landon Ard, Northwestern wide receiver Robert Joseph, Chester running back Julius Pendergrass or Rock Hill wide receiver Kirob Sims. The Herald-area high school football teams have long provided a bountiful harvest for colIege football recruiters. Year after year they come into the area trying to lure our best players to their football stadiums. Shane Beamer is an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at South Carolina. The York/Chester/Lancaster area “is as good as anywhere when you talk about talent level and the quality of coaches,” Beamer said. “And it’s only getting better.” There are 35, or more, local players set to play football for Division I colleges in 2010. The schools range from Buffalo, N.Y., to Birmingham, Ala. This year, 10 or more local players could sign Division I football scholarships. “Players get on the radar early. We identify kids as freshmen and sophomores,” Beamer said. “We start inviting them to camps and get them to our stadium; that’s the name of the game.” That persistence has paid off for the Gamecocks the last couple years. They have seven local players on the roster this season. Cornerback Stephon Gilmore and safety DeVonte Holloman are sophomores. They helped lead South Pointe to a state title in 2008. Receiver Tori Gurley graduated from Rock Hill, kicker Spencer Lanning and cornerback Marty Markett played at York, cornerback C.C. Whitlock was a Chester Cyclone and free safety Jared Shaw played at Fort Mill. Jeff Scott is the recruiting coordinator for Clemson. He has a leg up on the 2011 class by getting McNeal. Scott says the talented players are a direct result of the quality of coaching that exists here. “That area of the state has great high school coaches; some of the best in the state,” Scott said. “It is an area we definitely concentrate on. Those players are brought up in good systems.” Clemson is spending time with rising juniors now with most of the The Herald

senior recruiting complete. Scott said the Tigers are looking at six to eight junior players in the York/Chester/Lancaster area. Two local standouts are playing for the Tigers this season: Rock Hill safety Jonathan Meeks and Chester offensive lineman Kalon Davis. WR Kirob Sims is the only starter back on the offensive side of the ball. Montgomery has stressed the need for his team to be consistent, whether it’s throwing or running the ball. The coach says they can air it out as well as they can grind it but the Bearcats are probably a little more run now than throw. Rock Hill has two QBs: Kenterius Hinton is a runner and Corey Wessinger is a thrower. Montgomery said whichever one ends up being the starting quarterback will dictate a little of what the Bearcats do offensively.
Rock Hill returns three starters: S Dre Williams, DT Thomas Perry and DT Mitchell Jeter. The defense is not as big as last year’s team but still has speed. Montgomery said defense is about attitude, effort, and desire. So long as those traits are in place, the Bearcats will be okay.
The teams’ biggest strength is speed. Its biggest concern is experience. The lack of experience translates into not being able to switch plays at the line of scrimmage, and an inability to make quick adjustments on the field. Region 3-AAAA is by far the strongest in the state and every game will take on a playoff atmosphere.

Jester is a QB coach and folks who like the air game are going to have fun watching the Falcons. Thomas Condron passed for close to 2,000 yards last season. His favorite targets, WRs Will Ford and Nick Damm, are back along with Jake Williams in the slot. J.J. McCullough is a strong runner who will keep teams geared for the pass off guard. And three OLs — T.J. Boyd, David Liotta and Corey Feely — are back.
It’s the same song on defense and it goes something like this: We can be good on defense. We have to be good on defense. It’s not that the Falcons don’t play hard. They have been a tad slower and a little smaller than most teams they’ve played since opening four years ago. Back are DBs Sean Potts-Harris and John Gislason, DLs Logan Daughtry and Mark Barber and LB Patrick Shropshire.
The Falcons have promise and a shot at their first winning season. Although Condron (5-9, 165) is not a big QB, he is a good leader and can move his team. If he catches fire emotionally as well as physically, it will likely rub off on his teammates and equate into wins. The offense has a chance to be good, but not enough that it can afford to get into scoring battles. The defense will need to slow opponents and give the offense a chance to win.

All but three starters return, which is good news for Susi. Leading the way will be QB Preston Fry, with a year under his belt. Maybe the best-kept secret in the area is Asa Kryst, who can line up with authority at RB or WR. Trent Butler will also play WR and is a game breaker, and Tyler Klipa has possibilities there. Cam Kilpatrick and Jake Reed return on the OL.
Six starters are back on a defensive unit that has much promise. It’s a physical group with good speed and pursuit. It starts at LB, where Kryst and Wilson Gregory should shine and help the Jackets stay close enough at the end to win. Butler will lead the secondary at one corner, with Nick Reseda at safety. Kilda also figures in the mix at either S or CB.
The bet here is to be ready to be surprised. After winning just one game in each of the last two seasons, both against rival Nation Ford, Susi has an experienced core of players on both sides of the ball. With Fry pulling the trigger, the Yellow Jackets are going to throw. Expect Kryst to get plenty of touches and have a big season. Susi is a few players away from having an outstanding defense, which will be a must in powerful Region 4-AAA.

The Stallions have a player similar to former QB Stephon Gilmore in Ta Hicklin. And lest we forget, if the game is close, kicker Landon Ard can bang the ball through the uprights from long distances. He’s a good one. There are holes to fill everywhere, but an undefeated JV team moves up and is very athletic. Chris Meyer and Jay Brown return as starters on the OL.
When Carroll talks about this year’s team, it’s hard to figure out which side of the ball he believes will be the best. The Stallions’ defense will devour opponents. DE Jadeveon Clowney, rated by some recruiting services as the top high school player in the nation, can dominate at times. There’s another major college prospect in Gerald Dixon on the other side and he might move to LB. And Corey Neely will turn some heads in the secondary.
South Pointe has been one of the top Class AAAA teams since fielding its first varsity football team in 2006 even though its enrollment was at the Class AAA level. For at least the next two seasons, the Stallions will play in Class AAA. Carroll and his staff go into the season with open positions all over the field, but they will reload and continue the tradition the team has established.

OVERVIEW
Only one offensive starter returns from 2009, senior QB Aaron Miller. Miller knows the Blue Eagles’ Double Wing-T offense and the team has dared its opponents to slow them down. Turner intends to ride Miller’s talents, and the QB could become a passer in his senior campaign, adding a new wrinkle to an established scheme. A year ago, Turner entered the season expecting to pass more, but as the season unfolded, few balls were put in the air. Nick Derderian has moved from DT to TE this year.
Clover returns four starters on defense: DBs James Walker and Trey Childress as well as DLs Jerry Sanders and Colby Welker. The defense has some people banged up after spring and summer workouts but Turner expects to be competitive. The coach is looking for his team to be “Aggressive, running to the football, making some plays and hopefully forcing some turnovers.”
Miller is the key for Clover’s offense. He doesn’t get the attention that Northwestern’s Justin Worley or Chester’s Tony McNeal receive. The trio of QBs are threeyear starters at their respective schools. Clover has been ousted from the Class AAAA Division I playoffs the last two years by the eventual state champion: Byrnes in 2008 and Dorman in 2009. Clover won the Division II title in 2007. Turner says Miller is like having another coach on the field. Turner is concerned about the injury bug that has followed his team throughout the summer.

Propst prefers a 4-3 look, but the Cougars will mix up their defenses. There will be a steep learning curve because York will start seven sophomores on defense. Sophomore OL/DL Beau Nunn is one to watch. Dover is a hard-nosed safety.
It’s all about a fresh start for the Cougars. York was 10-24 over the past three seasons and hasn’t enjoyed a winning season since 2006. The new stadium, an impressive structure with field turf, combined with the move to Region 4-AAA, are reasons for optimism. Inexperience on both sides of the ball, however, is a concern. Propst said as many as 12 sophomores could start this season. The new region is tough, but York beat Fort Mill and Nation Ford last season.

Chester has a wealth of explosiveness, experience, and talent at the skill positions. Led by all-state quarterback Tony McNeal, who has committed to Clemson, the Cyclones possess a quick-strike and big-play ability from anywhere on the field. Running backs Julius Pendergrass and Brent Minter form a potent one-two combination. The question mark, however, is the offensive line, which lost three all-star game nominees and a Clemson signee.
The Cyclone defense will feature plenty of size up front with linemen Jevin Hardin and Darius Minter at 260 and 280 pounds, respectively. Both are great at stopping the run. The pass rush will feature senior defensive end Neil Williams, who sat out last season with an injury. The Cyclones are athletic at linebacker, but the strength of the defense will be in the secondary, where four starters return.
The development of the offensive line will be the key to Chester making another solid run at the Class AAA state championship. Otherwise, the offense is loaded and should light up the scoreboard weekly. Chester should see significant defensive improvements, especially with four returning starters in the secondary. New challenges exist with different conference opponents South Pointe, York, Fort Mill, and Nation Ford along with traditional rival Fairfield Central.

The offensive line will be anchored by three returning seniors: Dustin Belk, Devonte Craine and Jonathan Jeffery. Jeffery is returning from an ACL tear that sidelined him last season. QBs Shaq Williams and Kaderrious Jackson, WR Shaq Elder and sophomore OL Daquan Miller will be expected to fill the void left behind by the departure of the starting QB, WR and RB from last season.
The 4-3 defensive scheme will benefit from seven returning starters: junior LBs Breshawn Reed and A.J. Williams, junior DL Andre Foulks, senior DB Jock Massey, and senior DLs Ervin Moore, Dabney Rorie and Daniel Foster. The defense is expected to be consistently stingy, hard-nosed and aggressive.
Entering the fifth season under McMurray, the Bruins are looking to build upon the 2008 and 2009 seasons, when they went 10-4 and 7-5, respectively. Seeking to control the length of the field, create turnovers and dominate time of possession, the Bruins’ defensive unit is undoubtedly the strength of the 2010 squad. They will be tasked with keeping games within reach for the inexperienced yet talented offense. The team is comprised of mostly juniors, particularly on offense, so issues regarding cohesion and filling the gaps from last season’s graduated seniors are of primary concern. Overall, the team is striving for no less than a deep postseason run, which will be an admirable feat in a congested, talented Region 3-AAAA.

With a year under his belt, Shaq Lamar is turning into the QB Schofield expected him to be. He can run, throw and has the right complement of talent around him to move the ball toward the end zone. Foremost are FB Alstevis Squirewell and WR Xavier Holmes. There are still holes to fill, but the team is in better shape up front with starting OLs Kishon Simpson, Corey Outen and Tyrail Smith back.
At least five offensive players will go both ways. There could be more depending on the new starters. The Red Devils will be solid up front and in the middle with Outen and Simpson at the ends, Squirewell at MLB, Holmes at OLB, Smith at DE and Ernest Talford at DB. Five spots are up for grabs, and in true Great Falls tradition, be assured it will be a speedy and hard-hitting unit.
Great Falls is thin and needs its young players to step up in a hurry. Six returning starters are back on offense and defense, but five go both ways. The returning players are among the best in Region 3-A, but avoiding injuries is a top priority. Several years ago, three Simpsons led the basketball team to glory. There are three more Simpsons on this year’s football team: DBs Tracy and Shaq and WB Kishon.

The help wanted sign hasn’t been taped to the door but seven spots are there for the taking to the players who step forward. The most experienced position is the secondary where Robinson and Truesdale roam at safety. Williams is also slotted for double duty and will start at OLB. Marc Morris returns on the DL.
The question mark is quarterback. But regardless of who ends up taking the handoffs, it’s clear that the Warriors will have one of the top running attacks around with Rondreas Truesdale and Breyon Williams. Dalton McGuirt is vying for the QB job and Mayer has an outstanding WR in Jarrell Robinson. AJ Gordon and C Daniel Helms return on the OL.
Overall numbers are up thanks to the younger kids. That’s not the case for the varsity, which could end up with as many as seven or eight players going both ways. Added to that situation, the Warriors are moving up to Class AA into a region that includes powerhouses Cheraw and Central. Conditioning and avoiding injuries will be a must.

Rebuilding is the key word for Lewisville’s offense. The Lions’ returning QB, Will Robbins, decided to play fall baseball. Junior Justin Funderburke, sophomore Preston Kirk and freshman Tony Gaston, who has pulled ahead, are vying for the QB job. WR Quentin McKnight along with TEs Josh Stilwell and Zach Carter are good targets. Justin Douglas is the lone starter back on the OL.
Only five players are back on defense and a new coach has been brought in to rebuild. That man is Jim Barnes, who made his name building bone-crushing defenses at Rock Hill High School. Burke likes what he’s seen so far, with Barnes building around FS McKnight, DE Stilwell, DT Luke Conner, LB Zach Carter and LB Will Cox.
Until the Lions settle the quarterback issue, the defense should be strong enough to keep the score close. The coaching staff has plenty of good, young talent to work with and the group includes linemen on both sides of the ball who can be difference makers. Killer schedule. The Lions play maybe the top teams in Class AAA (Chester), in Class AA (Central) and Class A (Chesterfield). The Lions also must overcome emotions surrounding the loss of Brian Colvin, who collapsed during the preseason Chester Jamboree and died.

QB will be in the capable hands of Mark Vehaun and the offense should light up the scoreboard with seven starters back. On the ground, Josh Parker and Cameron Adkins will get the call. Ian Brandt, a 6-5 WR/TE, is a top target. The really, really good news? Four starting linemen are back: Andrew Duvall, Adam Crain, Aaron McCarley and Mark Watts.
Six starters are back on defense, giving the Indians 13 of 22 starters back. LB is stacked with Peyton Hinson, Mark Watts and Nate Casey resuming their spots from last season. Josh Parker returns at SS and Adkins at FS. The only defensive lineman back is Vehaun at defensive end, so one issue to be answered early will be finding the other players on the D front.
This could get exciting. The bandwagon filled quickly last season as the Indians won eight games and made it to the semifinal round of the playoffs. Might want to find a bigger wagon. The sky is the limit this season with quality starters back. Devine replaced Ben McGarity, who moved to Charlotte’s Providence Day after he rebuilt the WCCS program. Devine coached at Huntersville Southlake (N.C.) so he is very familiar with the conference.
