DAIRY FARMERS: A DIVERSE BUNCH! Since the last issue of The Link, I’ve been noticing a trend in my day to day travels: diversity is everywhere! Whether it’s a famous fastfood joint now offering gourmet coffee beverages or mobile phones being made to function as cameras, agendas and even flashlights, diversity is all around us, and chances are, it’s here to stay. I recently took a day trip to the beautiful Niagara region to meet up with some pretty diverse dairy farmers in Fonthill, Ont. The interesting thing is, these guys have been diversifying before there was even a word to describe what they were doing! The Yungblut family of Greenview Farms milk cows, run 700 acres, and have a grape growing business on top of that. Even with two families involved, I still can’t wrap my head around how they manage to make it work! You can read more about their unique story on page 24. Although fall is a busy time of year on the farm, I hope many of you have had the opportunity to support your local Holstein Shows! Congratulations to all of this year’s winners - they can be found starting on page 10. Last but not least, thank you to those who entered our “Heart of the Herd” competition! This is a readers-choice contest - be sure to vote for your favourite cow by November 16, 2012. Stay tuned for the winner in our next issue! T
EFFICIENT COWS ARE DROUGHT RESISTANT COWS The summer of 2012 will be long remembered for the drought that struck our province. The majority of counties harvested lower volumes of forages, making it difficult to put away enough feed for the winter. After a summer like this, the question quickly becomes, who do I feed in my barn? If you have a cow with a strong pedigree that is well above herd average in production, and physically able to last a long time in the herd, she gets to stay. She will eat the same amount as a cow that is average to below-average for production and unable to breed quality animals. Now is the time to make those decisions with regards to which genetics you should continue to develop in your herd. Looking at BCA deviations, SCC, depth of classification scores in the family and genomic values will give you a good indication of who will become the next base of your herd. In 2003 when BSE hit Canada, herd owners decided to keep the good young two-year-old heifers and instead sold the bottom-end cows. This improved the entire base of cows in the province and excelled the development of the next generation. We are, once again, at a setback in the industry, a time where we will have to decide which cows we will keep in the barn to lead the next generation. Sincerely,

ANDREA BEGAN AT THE ONTARIO HOLSTEIN BRANCH JENNIFER JOINED THE ONTARIO HOLSTEIN BRANCH IN

Andrea grew up in rural South-Western Ontario in the village of Millbank, where she spent her youth playing softball, taking every Jenn was raised on her family’s dairy farm, Shylane Holsteins, just 4-H club offered, and of course, working at Anna Mae’s. She attended north of Stratford, in the heart of Ontario’s dairy belt. Our local county shows provide a muchneeded excuse to spend some time socializing and networking with fellow breeders while taking in some of the area’s finest-looking animals. Whether you attended as an exhibitor or spectator, the success of your local show could not continue without your support. 2012 was another successful year for county shows across Ontario. Some were up in numbers, some down slightly, but all in all, the shows were well attended and the cattle looked spectacular! THE 16TH ANNUAL ONTARIO SUMMER SHOW WAS The Junior Champion rosette was presented to the 2011 All-Canadian JUDGED BY DAVID CRACK JR OF RICHMOND, PQ, AT THE nominee, Kingsway Goldwyn Artichoke, owned by Kingsway Farms LINDSAY CENTRAL EXHIBITION GROUNDS ON JULY 27. and Jason David Mell. The Reserve rosette was earned by the winning
Junior Yearling, Sharp Acres ST Jessy, a Cowtown Showtime daughter owned by Ronald C Werry, Casscrest and Clarkvalley Holsteins. Honourable Mention went to John Buckley on Grillsdale Tenacious Rascal, the winning senior calf from a strong class of 32 heifers. Premier Breeder of both the Junior and Senior divisions were won by Kingsway Farms and Exhibitor Banners were claimed by Crovalley Holsteins.

One of the constant strengths of the success of the show is energy and enthusiasm provided by the East-Central district 4-H members as they compete in showmanship and clipping competitions. Winning Championship Showmanship honours was top Intermediate Peter Leach. Reserve was Dan Werry and Honourable Mention was Courtney Ray. Other class winners included Junior Showperson, Sidney Summers, and Intermediate Showperson, Rebecca Redner. Champion Calf honours went to Dan Werry on Lorneva Braxton Dolly, followed by Josh Bos with Bosdale Fever Laura. Honourable Mention was Colleen Halpenny on Crovalley Lauthority Andorra. Rachel Jebson earned the Champion Clipper award, followed by Patrick Baird, Evan Stanley and Ryan Crowley.
David and his associate and ring man, Vincent Landry, both commented on the honour and privilege to judge the well-presented cattle on display. Grand Champion and Intermediate Champion went to Wellington County bred senior three-year-old, Earlen Goldwyn Secret, now owned by Yvon Sicard, Ghyslain Demers and Ferme Blondin. Sicard and Demers also earned Reserve Grand and Honourable Mention with the winning four-year-old, Roggua Thanks to the hard working show committee and the great support of Dundee Evelyne. Also recognized as the high BCA cow at the show area sponsors for making this year’s show another success! was the winning junior three-year-old, Cobequid Goldwyn Leno.

SMOKING HOT WEATHER DIDN’T STOP THE CROWDS FROM COMING OUT TO THE MAXVILLE SHOW ON JUNE 23.
156 animals from Ontario, Quebec and the United States competed in one of the largest and best quality shows in recent years. Bloyce Thompson of Eastside Holsteins, Charlottetown PEI, capably handled the judging assignment. At the conclusion of the Junior Yearling class, the top two placing 4-H claves from each class were brought back for the 4-H Champion class. Alex Chabot’s calf, Belfast Goldwyn Lasenza, was picked for Champion 4-H calf with Reserve Champion going to Kenny McRae on Bonnie Brae Seaver Bentley. Honourable Mention was Kyle Clement with Winright Sanchez Jurassic. Julie McDonald of Winchester judged the 4-H Showmanship competition over the noon hour and selected Kenny McRae as her Senior Showperson. She named Bethany McDonald runner-up. In Junior Showmanship, Alex Chabot was the winner, while Rachel Clow was runner-up. At the end of the heifer classes, Judge Thompson selected his Junior Champions. R-E-W Happy Go Lucky, owned by Velthuis Farms Ltd, Ardross Holsteins and Sjendi Farms, was the winner. Reserve Champion was Gillette Sid Mistery Day, owned by Ferme Gillette, while Honourable Mention went to Velthuis Jasper Janice, owned by Velthuis Farms Ltd. POSITIVE ATTITUDES AND THE SHARED GOAL OF BREEDING A STRONG MILKING HERD WITH HIGH TYPE AND LONGEVITY DRIVE THE HUSBAND AND WIFE PARTNERSHIP OF RENE AND BIANCA STRIK. The Striks came to Canada in October of 2010 from Holland and settled in Oxford county. “The strength of the Canadian Dairy Industry with its strong stable milk price” was one of the motivators that triggered the couple to move their young family to Canada from Holland, states Rene. The Striks were no strangers also to the Canadian philosophy of balanced breeding. “We had always admired Canadian cattle and used mostly Canadian genetics in our herd in Holland,” he says. While in Holland, the family had always participated in breed improvement programs and enjoyed going to shows with their herd. Coming to Canada meant starting from the ground up and that is exactly what they did. The 200 acre farm that they purchased here had existing buildings that the Striks removed in order to be able to build their own home and barn. They began construction in 2011 and by October of the same year they were milking in the 186 sand bedded tie-stall barn, in a double ten parallel parlor. Having already established a purebred herd with a high focus on modern genetics in Holland, the couple knew what they wanted to look for as their base of a new herd in Canada. The criteria for building the herd was based on type, looking mainly at feet, legs and udders. Registered animals were also a priority, as this was a way to look at cow families and to be able to see the genetics behind the animal. Currently they are milking 100 cows with about the same number of young stock. Having to sell the herd that they worked so hard to build in Holland was not easy for the family, but bringing embryos with them (most sired by Canadian Bulls) made the transition a little easier and they still have a piece of their former herd with them.

Rene sees theirs as a “commercial farm with great interest in type, and high milk production through good management and feeding.” With a focus on building cow families, the use of Holstein Canada’s programs will assist in breeding and culling decisions going forward. Rene and Bianca see the value in the long-term uses of herd improvement programs especially when they have animals to sell in the future. The importance of family is very evident when talking with this young couple. Rene and Bianca have four children - Dan (9), Lynn (8), Liza (6) and Jill (3), who are all very interested in the farm. There is no doubt that this energetic and friendly family will continue to thrive and be a wonderful addition to the community that they live in as well as the dairy industry that they are so proud to be a part of.

WITH THE AVAILABILITY OF MILK QUOTA LOW THESE DAYS AND A GROWING POPULATION OF NEXT GENERATION FARMERS STAYING HOME TO FARM, DIVERSIFICATION HAS QUICKLY BECOME ONE OF THE LATEST “BUZZ WORDS” IN THE DAIRY INDUSTRY TODAY. YET ONE NIAGARA FAMILY HAS BEEN ACTIVELY DIVERSIFYING SINCE DAY ONE, LONG BEFORE IT WAS CONSIDERED A HOUSEHOLD TERM. AND DESPITE THE LONG HOURS AND DAILY JUGGLING ACT NEEDED TO MAKE IT ALL RUN SMOOTHLY, THEY WOULDN’T HAVE IT ANY OTHER WAY. “Some people milk cows, some grow grapes and some cash crop,” says Ron Yungblut of Greenview Farms in Fonthill, Ontario. “Somehow, we ended up doing all three.” A third generation farmer, Ron has been helping on the family’s 100head dairy farm since he was 11 years old. Back then his job was to feed calves before school, but when he turned 18 and graduated from high school, he bought out his brother Len’s share and began working on the farm full-time. The Yungblut’s rich history of farming goes back over 100 years when Ron’s grandfather moved from St. Catharines to Fonthill. Eventually, Ron’s late father, Wallace, acquired the farm and ran the business along with his brother until 1971, when he purchased the farm outright and continued the operation with his own three sons. Today, Ron and his brother, Terry, own and operate the farm along with Ron’s 24-year-old son Steve (who still lives at home), Ron’s wife, Kim, and Terry’s wife, Bev. Their mother, Margaret, who turned 86 this year, still lives in the original homestead. Together they cash crop 700 acres, manage a 23-acre vineyard and milk 35 head of cattle. Each member has found a unique niche in the operation. Terry is an especially gifted mechanic and keeps the farm’s machinery in tip-top condition. “He’s amazing with the equipment. He can fix just about anything!” Steve says of his uncle. Ron’s family, on the other hand, manages the daily routine in the barn. His wife grew up in the neighboring city of Thorold and had never set foot on a working farm until she met Ron some 30 years ago. “It just goes to show you,” she says, “that sometimes, not only can you take the girl out of the city but you can take the city out of the girl!” Along with her husband and son, they manage the daily milking. Steve has always had a keen interest in genetics and today manages the breeding decisions and calf registrations. He also keeps the herd’s

records and helped the farm achieve its CQM certification earlier this year. With Wallace’s passing three years ago, Kim began doing the farm’s bookkeeping and quickly converted from pencil and paper to Simply Accounting on the computer. “We do a lot of multi-tasking around here!” says Ron. In short, everyone has an important role to play. Ron and Kim also have a 21-year-old daughter, Jackie. While she’s admittedly not a cow enthusiast at heart, Kim is grateful for her help - especially in the summer time - when there are extra hands to feed at lunchtime. She is currently working toward a degree in nursing at Niagara College. Terry’s wife, Bev, also contributes to the farm. She and Terry were married five years ago; it was a second marriage for both of them, after having each lost a spouse. Since that time, Bev has played a key role in developing the retail juice business, selling juice at various markets, as well as a local co-op. is slowly growing and many customers who try it once later return to buy cases at a time.
was successfully flushed to Fever and Stanleycup with some of the Stanleycup embryos being sold to New Zealand.
Tucked away in the corner of Niagara County, the Yungbluts have gone about their business over the years in a quiet manner. They are a relatively small herd, but between the grapes and other crops they grow, they haven’t had as much time as they would have liked to take their animals out to shows. Last year, however, things started to change when the show came to them.
2012 began with even more excitement when another prominent cow, Greenview Goldwyn Jamie, went EX-90 in February and then gained an additional two points during mid-round classifications in June. Described by Steve as “a big and powerful cow,” Jamie was the farm’s first two-year-old to score 87 points.
In May, they entered Greenview Titanic Sly EX-92 in Niagara County’s first ever Breeder’s Cup. Though the competition took place in the spring, the results were kept under wraps until the county’s twilight meeting in early July. “I literally had to keep this one under control!” Steve jokes, pointing across the table to his mom. “Our club secretary, Brad Eggink, put together a slide presentation with the winners in reverse order and when Sly’s picture came up as the winner, she threw both hands in the air and yelled out, ‘Sly Babyyy!’” It was a moment they won’t soon forget. Then again, all of 2011 was fairly unforgettable for the Yungbluts. It began in February when Holstein Canada Classifier, Ian Matthers, awarded Sly five extra points and moved her from VG-87-3YR to EX-92 in her third lactation. She became the first homebred Excellent for the Greenview prefix. The excitement had barely settled, when during the farm’s mid-round classification, Greenview Lee JJ moved up two points to EX-90 in her fifth lactation. She has twin Shottle heifers who will be fresh in February and will undoubtedly catch the eye of visitors to Greenview during the 2013 Holstein Convention Tours. The year rounded off at the county’s annual Holstein Banquet when Greenview Rudolph Jaded VG-87-11YR 3* was awarded Niagara County’s Cow of the Year. Jaded produced 106,404 kg lifetime in eight lactations, with records to 13,732 kg and a BCA of 278-246254. Today, two of Jaded’s granddaughters, Greenview Outside Joking VG-87-3YR, and her maternal sister, Greenview Mr. Burns Jokester VG-87-2YR, are the buzz in the barn. “It feels like we’re finally starting to get some feedback,” says Steve. “It’s always nice to be recognized for your hard work,” Kim adds. In addition to three Excellent cows, the Yungblut’s tie-stall barn is filled with 25 VG and 10 GP cows. The rolling herd average is 10,600 kg milk, 386 kg fat, 327 kg protein and a BCA of 232-235-233. Steve’s late grandfather, Wallace, always took pride in his purebred cows and ensured the proper records were kept. Today, the herd traces back to just a few noteworthy animals. “It all began basically with two cows,” says Ron, “Greenview Centurion Jessie VG and Greenview Della Prefect VG.” Wallace passed away in 2009, but his influence can still be seen around the farm. A black and white photo of him in the barn with his cows is proudly displayed in the family’s trophy case. Below it is a photo of Steve, who at 24, loves cows as much as his grandfather did. “One of my favorite memories,” says Ron, “is of my dad and Steve in the barn, leaning on pitchforks and shooting the breeze. They shared a passion for cattle; it really bonded them.” Today, Steve is a Director on the Niagara Holstein Club, a position he took on after his dad retired. He makes most of the breeding decisions at Greenview - “with a little guidance at times” Ron jokes – and uses a variety of tools to select his sires. “I practically live on Holstein Canada’s site,” Steve says. “I also try to talk to classifiers and learn as much as I possibly can.” Steve graduated from Niagara College with a diploma in Business in 2010. He also took part in Ontario Holstein’s Dairy Sen$e program in the

At the Taste of Ontario Tag Sale in March, he bought Dymentholm Lexis Liz L, a Pine-Tree Sid heifer backed by eleven generations of VG or EX dams in the Ravenswell Lydia EX-92 19* family. Liz’s dam is Idee Goldwyn Lulu VG-89 2YR who was All Ontario Jr. 2-YR old and Honorable Mention All Canadian Jr. 2-YR old in 2009. He also purchased Denlee Goldwyn Reese, who is recently fresh and backed by seven generations VG or EX with 38*. She is a granddaughter of Karnvilla Skychief Roxe EX 18*. In the future, he’d like to buy into some prominent cow families, with Lila Z, Laurie Sheik and Glen Drummond Splendor descendants being at the top of his list. Though small by today’s growing standards, the Yungbluts work hard to maintain an exceptional level of quality on their farm. They’ve made several improvements in recent years, including installing highefficient lighting, high-flow water bowls, tunnel ventilation and new mattresses in the barn. Next on the list is another silo and - depending on who you ask - a new heifer barn or dairy facility. Steve’s pushing for the barn, but admits it’s his dad and uncle who will have to make the final call with regards to the family’s future building plans. The Yungbluts are proud of what they’ve been able to achieve over the years, not only with their cows, but with their cash crop operation and grapes as well. Together they farm 700 acres of land in the Niagara region, comprised of 23 acres of grapes, 125 wheat, 150 each of corn and soybeans and 250 acres of hay. Hay has always been an important crop on the farm, but in recent years, it has become even more vital. Close to 15 years ago while harvesting hay in a field just off the 406, Terry and Ron were approached by a local truck driver who was bringing in tropical plants from Florida. He was looking for a load to take back with him to make his trips worthwhile. Seeing the potential in this arrangement, the brothers agreed to supply him with the hay. Now they make approximately 10,000 small square bales for the man in an average year and fill custom orders for area horse enthusiasts who rave about its unparalleled quality. High quality forages aside, what makes Greenview really stand out are the grapes. Leafy green rows dangling with tight bunches of Concord, Niagara and French hybrid grapes begin a mere 20 yards from the main dairy barn and work their way slowly toward the road,

The Yungbluts focus is on producing some of the best-tasting grape juice in the region. The grapes are hot-pressed at a processing plant in St. Catharines and then bottled and labeled in Beamsville. The family sells both a blue and white variety of 100 per cent pure grape juice, marketed under “the Juice of Kings” label. The name comes from the fact that Ron and Terry’s father, Wallace, was Grape King in 1968, and Terry in 1984. The prestigious title, Ron explains, is comparable to the dairy industry’s Master Breeders Shield and is awarded to one deserving grape producer in Ontario each year. Just like dairy farming or cash cropping, it takes a lot of hard work to run a successful grape growing business. “Much of the work in the vineyard is still very labor intensive,” admits Kim. The process begins in early spring and involves hand-tying each vine to wire to secure it for the growing season. By early summer, the succoring phase starts, which helps the vine retain its energy by removing unwanted growth and/or securing new growth in order to replace plants where needed. Kim usually aims to pass through the entire grapery at least twice before the harvest; three times if she’s really lucky. “It’s a lot of walking, it’s a lot of heat, but there’s also a great deal of satisfaction as you watch small shoots mature, thrive and eventually produce.” The Yungbluts welcome visitors to their farm, just minutes off the 406, to buy the prized juice, and tour their well-kept barn. In past years, the family has hosted the Niagara Twilight Meeting and welcomed guests from as far away as Finland and Germany. Right now, they’re busy preparing for the 2013 National Convention, taking place right on their doorstep in nearby Niagara Falls. They are proud to be part of the tour and look forward to opening up their barns to visitors next spring. Though many things have changed at Greenview Farms, the Yungblut’s desire to work hard and constantly improve is still present in everything they do. “Being a good farmer is like playing an instrument,” says Kim. “Anyone can learn how to play, but it takes a lot of time and hard work to really be able to make music.”

W
hy wouldn’t you give an hour of your time every seven months to someone that is going to help your herd get better?” asks Rob Bumstead. Rob and his wife, Alice, of Loyalyn Holsteins in Owen Sound started with an average homebred herd in 2000. Now, within the last five years, they have bred 12 excellent cows.
“I learn something from the classifier each time as they look at my cows differently than I do everyday,” says Rob. With the increase in classifcation scores on their cows, the Bumsteads have realized increased production and overall longevity.

ow Consultants” is the term that Klaas and Jelly Antuma of Antuma Dairy in Owen Sound use when describing Holstein Canada classifiers when they come to visit their herd. “They are an extra set of eyes that help identify strengths and weaknesses within your herd,” explains Klaas. From the reports they receive at the visit, the Antumas are able to make better breeding decisions and reduce the amount of inbreeding in the herd. Klaas and Jelly have also noted a bigger market and better prices for animals they sell now that the herd is registered and classified.
Data shows that classified animals produce more milk per lactation and generate an additional net profit of more than $343 per cow per year than their non-classified counterparts. Meanwhile, the average premium selling price for registered Holsteins is $313 more than similar quality grade animals. CLOSE TO 200 HOLSTEIN BREEDERS, INDUSTRY ENTHUSIASTS AND FRIENDS GATHERED ON JULY 14 TO CELEBRATE THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BRUCE COUNTY HOLSTEIN CLUB. The celebration was held in conjunction with Bruce County’s annual Twilight Barbecue and was hosted by Ralph and Jayne Dietrich and family of Character Holsteins in Mildmay. Guests enjoyed a roast beef barbecue, which was followed by an evening of memories and presentations.

THE EARLY DAYS
Over time, interest grew in the formation of a Holstein breeders club. On December 30, 1937, over 30 Holstein breeders gathered at the farm of Lorne Reid for the first meeting. Similar to today, education was a component of the meeting and Byron G Jenvey, Western Ontario Field Representative for the Holstein Association of Canada, was on hand to conduct a Type demonstration. Other topics of general discussion were Bang’s disease, mastitis and mineral feeds. Early Holstein breeders, James E. Harrison and Abram Rowand were elected President and Vice President respectively. Lorne B. Reid was elected Secretary and held that position for over 30 years. It is interesting to note that of the 31 breeders who became members that day – paying a $0.50 membership fee to do so - 11 were sons or grandsons of three siblings who relocated to Huron Township from Hastings County in the mid- 1850’s.
The first purebred Holstein cows in Bruce County were imported from Hastings County in 1902 by James E. Harrison of Huron Township. The popularity of the breed was slow in growth, but as the potential of the breed was recognized, more Holstein herds were founded. One of these early breeders was Russel Reid of Huron Township, who purchased Holsteins in 1915 from Harrison. Reid’s son, Lorne, took over the herd in 1919 and developed it into the wellknown “Maple Lea” herd.
In early 1938, the club was well under way and discussions about forming a calf club started to take place. By 1967, there were seven calf clubs in the county. 1938 also saw the beginning of the County Show. It was held in Ripley for the first three years, Kincardine for the next four, and then Teeswater for 31 years. In 1979, the show was moved to Walkerton. In 1998, Bruce and Grey clubs joined together to showcase their animals at the Bruce-Grey Holstein Show, which is still being held in Walkerton today.
Maple Lea Sunset Sally, a seven-year-old, was Reserve Grand Champion of the Chicago International show in 1953. Another cow, Maple Lea L.G. Rosine 7*, was All-Canadian and first four-yearold at the Royal Winter Fair. She sold for $3,100 at the Maple Lea dispersal sale in 1954. Reid bred nine class XX bulls, one Very Good,
From the early days, club sales and a county sales agent served the marketing needs of the Holstein breeders of Bruce County. Over time, with more buyers coming into the county to purchase cattle, the role of the county sales agent gradually diminished.
Club President, Kevin McKee, and past National Director of Holstein Canada, Jim Needham (Mahdeen Holsteins) talked about breed development in the county and acknowledged breeders of the past and present. Master Breeders Wayne and Tom Whytock of Doral Farms Inc. were presented with a gift from the club. Kevin McKee accepted a certificate of congratulations on behalf of the club from Huron Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson, who thanked the club for its contribution to agriculture and rural living. The evening also included displays of the history of the club and an opportunity to view the Character herd and facilities.

Production, in addition to Type, has seen great improvement in Bruce County, a trend that is also evident across the province and country. In 1939, just three breeders in the county were using the Record of Performance (ROP) program. The following year, in an effort to entice breeders to sign up, the club gave a set of scales to any breeder who joined the program. In 1967, the directors held a canvas in support of ROP and classification, followed four years later by another canvas in support of herd improvement. “THE DAIRY COUNTY OF THE FUTURE” TAKES SHAPE Other notes gleaned from the club records show 1,000 people attended the first field day, which was held in June 1943 at the farm of Lorne B. Reid. At that event, two breeders - Lorne B. Reid and James T. Needham - became National Directors. By 1981, one third of all new members in Western Ontario hailed from Bruce County. “Bruce County - the dairy county of the future” is a quote taken from a passage written by then President, David Inglis. It was printed in a book prepared by the Bruce J.H. Gordon Inglis receives his Master Breeder Shield County Holstein Club in 1967 from Holstein Canada President, L. H. In recent years, there have been in excess of 90 females classified first time Excellent annually. Prior to Inglis’ message, Master Breeder shields had been awarded to three breeders in Bruce County. Since then, another nine breeders have received this prestigious honour. Chances are, with a track record like this, David Inglis is more than optimistic about the future of Holsteins in the county today. With a strong showing each year at the county show, keen young 4-Hers stepping up and following in their parents’ footsteps and more and more herds classifying Excellent cattle each round, the possibilities for Holstein breeders in Bruce County are endless.

FOUR JUNIOR DAIRY SHOWS WERE ONCE AGAIN HELD IN THE PROVINCE THIS YEAR. These shows are a perfect opportunity for junior 4-Hers to compete at a regional level and gain first-hand show experience at the same time. The Eastern Ontario Junior Show was held June 29-30, 2012 in conjunction with the EastGen 4-H Showcase. Judge Hugh Hunter of Smiths Falls evaluated 63 keen 4-Hers and their calves throughout the day. Taking top showmanship honours was Rebecca Redner of Hastings County, followed by Kelsey Edwards of Renfrew County. Champion calf went to Kirkland Reaney of Carleton County with Riverdown Fever Locket and Kaitlyn French from Leeds County as Reserve with Polestar Braxton Blueberry. The East-Central Junior Show was held on July 3-4, 2012 at the Orono Fairgrounds with Kevin MacLean of Napanee working hard to place 36 keen participants throughout the day. Champion showperson was Elaine Jeffs of Northumberland County with Reserve going to Brooke Benschop of Durham. Champion calf was captured by Meghan Burnett of Kawartha Lakes on Kingsbury Advantage Pam Red, while Corey Stockdale

of Peterborough County had Reserve Grand Champion with Embrdale Bianca Seaver. The Western Junior Show took place on July 16-17, 2012 at the Outdoor Farm Show facilities in Woodstock. Judge Steve Fraser had his work cut out for him, placing 97 participants. The big winner of the day was Madison Dyment of Oxford County, who took both Champion Showperson and Grand Champion Calf honours on Howard-View Rosalee. Trent Jones, also of Oxford, was Reserve Showperson and Carmen Portena of Perth led the Reserve Grand Champion Calf, Pendora Kampman Wisker. The West-Central Junior Show took place on August 20-21, 2012 at the Grand River Raceway in Elora. Glenn Barkey of Blackstock had the challenging task of placing 106 participants throughout the day. Coming out on top in the Showmanship division was Abbi Atkins, with Tyler Canning of Wellington County as Reserve. Brent Sayles of Brant County led the Grand Champion Calf, Bridon Calcium Gina, with Reserve going to Megan Summers of Grey County on Golden Reagan Elizabeth. Holstein Youth Farming, Fieldwork and 4- H: It’s all in a day’s work for these Frontenac County Siblings

GROWING UP ON THE FAMILY FARM IN SYDENHAM, ONTARIO, GRAHAM (17), OWEN (15) AND COURTNEY(10) ORSER ARE INVOLVED AND DEDICATED MEMBERS OF SEVERAL 4-H CLUBS IN FRONTENAC COUNTY. Along with parents, Lloyd past. On the farm, Graham and Owen milk cows and help with some of the fieldwork, while Courtney washes calves and helps her dad with some of the daily chores. Following in the footsteps of their father, Lloyd, who was involved in 4-H growing up and a previous winner of the Distinguished Achievement Award in 1982 (now the Dairy Youth Award), the Orsers are heavily involved with a variety of 4-H clubs and extracurricular activities. Graham is in his seventh year of 4-H and is currently a member of the dairy and swine clubs. He was also a member of the Frontenac “Go For The Gold” team, which placed third in the regional competition. This year Graham’s dairy calf is Rodrick Paramount Tia, a Junior Yearling. He was recently the Grand Champion Showman and had Reserve Champion Calf at three local fairs. Currently in Grade 12 at Sydenham High School, Graham plans to attend University to study Agriculture. He says the best lesson his parents have taught him to date is, “Do it right the first time!” Owen has been a member of 4-H for five years and is currently involved in the dairy club. This year he is showing Crater Friskyana Goldwyn. Last year, Owen was fortunate enough to be chosen to represent his county at the TD Dairy Youth 4-H Classic at the Royal Winter Fair for the first time with his calf, Crater BamaBelle Goldwyn. It was an experience he won’t forget. He has also participated in 4-H Discovery Days and P.L.A.Y.(Positive Living Active You) in the

The youngest of the Orser family, Courtney is in her first year of 4-H and is a member of both the dairy and gardening clubs. Her 4-H dairy project this year is Crater Zulu Braxton and she has been successful in the show ring placing 4th in the Novice Showmanship and Junior Calf classes at the Eastern Ontario Junior Show. Courtney was also the lucky winner of a hand-painted showbox at that show this year. She is currently in grade five at Loughborough Public school and enjoys reading books and taking dance classes in jazz, ballet and hip hop. In the future, Courtney would like to be a flight attendant because she is interested in traveling. “I enjoy 4-H because there are so many clubs to choose from and so many activities you can do,” she says. The three youngest Orser siblings have taken an interest in judging and have all attended several judging events, including the Region 2 Judging competition and 4-H judging at the Ottawa Valley Farm Show. This year, Graham and Owen were leadsmen for the Eastern Dairy Evaluation Clinic which was hosted by the Frontenac Holstein Club. Now representing the third generation at Orserdale, Graham, Owen and Courtney look forward to becoming more involved in the farm as they grow older, and continuing their family’s rich farming legacy in Frontenac County.

Laura is completing a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree at the University of Guelph. She has worked in canola seed production in Alberta and spent a summer working in marketing at Monsanto. She has also travelled to Australia, where she did fieldwork, milked cows and mustered and processed beef cattle. In the future, she hopes to land a communications or marketing role rooted in the agricultural sector.

In addition to being involved in his family’s Brant County vegetable farm, Colton is a Junior member of Holstein Canada and has spent the past five years honing his skills in dairy. In the future, he looks forward to pursuing a career in the AI industry, while still maintaining an active position on his family farm.

Connor has completed his first year of the Agriculture Business Program at the University of Guelph, Ridgetown Campus. He spends his time at home milking, feeding and looking after the general health of the cows, and working to maximize crop yields. In the future, he hopes to purchase additional acreage to rent out as an investment and one day take over the farm his father and grandfather have worked so hard to build.

As a student in the Dairy Management program at Michigan State University, Ron is gaining a global perspective on the dairy business. Ron’s family emigrated from Holland in 1997 and run a progressive dairy farm in Teeswater, where he plays an integral role. In the future, he would like to stay active in both the Canadian and US dairy industries and plans to continue to grow his family’s operation.

Scott is enrolled in year two of the General Agriculture program at the University of Guelph, Kemptville Campus. At home, his duties include milking cows, registering calves, weighing in on breeding decisions and completing field work. To date, he has had one All-Can nomination and two All-Ont nominations. Inter-County Judging THE SUN WAS HOT, THE CATTLE WERE CLIPPED AND THE EXCITEMENT WAS HIGH AS THE 2012 INTER-COUNTY JUDGING COMPETITION KICKED OFF AT THE EMBRO FAIRGROUNDS ON THURSDAY, AUGUST 2ND. A TOTAL OF 86 PARTICIPANTS TOOK PART IN THE COMPETITION, JUDGING NINE CLASSES OF CATTLE FROM AREA FARMS THROUGHOUT THE DAY.
Participants started off the day by writing a quiz based on material from the “You be the Judge” manual, which all young judges use to hone their skills. Upon completion of the 50-point quiz, participants headed outside to evaluate three classes of Holsteins, three classes of Jerseys and one class each of Brown Swiss, Guernsey and Ayrshire cattle. After spending the morning judging, participants broke for lunch before reconvening to give reasons in the afternoon. Seniors gave reasons on six of the classes they judged that morning, while juniors gave reasons on three classes. Participants later gathered in the main building to receive official placings and cuts from the day’s judges: Alicia Horne, Murray Reissner, Bruce Sayles, Jennifer Peart, Mike West, Steve Fraser, Ken Empey, Art Groenewegen and Brian Carscadden. At 4:30, participants gathered for a roast beef dinner and waited in anticipation to find out which four participants had won the 10-day allexpenses-paid trip to Madison, Wisconsin to attend World Dairy Expo. Following dinner, Jason French of the Ontario Holstein Branch thanked the sponsors and volunteers for making the day so successful. Sarah McIntosh of John Deere – the event’s premier sponsor – congratulated all participants and wished the winning team well in Madison. This year, Vanessa Crowley of Peterborough, Michael Lupton of Oxford, Jenna Elliott of Lambton and Chris Steven, also of Lambton, will represent Ontario at World Dairy Expo where they will compete in the
91st National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest. They were among the top winners of the day and will travel to Madison for 10 days in October with Bert Stewart and Murray Reissner as coaches. Following in her siblings’ footsteps in years past, Vanessa Crowley was named High Individual winner in the senior category. High Individual runner-up was Michael Lupton. Winning High Senior Team this year was the Lambton County team made up of Jenna Elliott and Chris Steven and coached by Brian Slaughter. Michael Lupton and Marty Hazeleger of Oxford, coached by Dean Karn, were runners-up. In the junior division, Mikayla Ringelberg of Wentworth had an outstanding day. She won High Individual and was named Junior Rookie of the day. High Individual runner-up was Peter Leach of Kawartha Lakes. This year’s High Team in the junior division was made up of Madison Dyment and Trent Jones of Oxford, coached by Dean Karn. Brent and Connor Sikma of Durham East, coached by Glenn Barkey, were runnersup. Congratulations to all 2012 winners listed below! 2012 REGULATIONS & ELIGIBILITY This competition is effective for the 2012 Show Season and is open for residents of Ontario exclusively. • Animal must be shown minimal at one (1) Ontario Branch recognized show to be eligible. • Be a Registered Holstein • Be owned by or in partnership with the exhibitor who is an Ontario Resident • Have won 1st or 2nd prize at an Ontario Holstein Branch county or regional show • Have won 1st, 2nd, or 3rd prize at Ontario Spring Discovery, Ontario Summer Show, Eastern Ontario Championship or Autumn Opportunity Shows • Have been in the Top eight (8) Ontario owned placings at the 2012 Royal Winter Fair • Only one entry for Junior Breeder’s Herd per exhibitor • Only one entry for Breeder’s Herd per exhibitor • Senior animals must qualify in milking class *Placings at Shows outside of Ontario should be included but are not considered as Qualifying Shows.
4-H Classes
• You must be a member of a 4-H Dairy Calf Club. • You must have shown your project at your club achievement day • 4-H Members must lead their own calf in at least two (2) Ontario Holstein Branch recognized shows but the animal need only qualify in one (1) show to be eligible • Entry form must show calf ’s actual placing in the class as well as 4-H placing in the class • Have been 1st or 2nd 4-H Calf (in its class) at an Ontario Holstein Branch county or regional show. • 1st, 2nd, 3rd 4-H Holstein Calf at Ontario Summer Show, Eastern Ontario Championship or Autumn Opportunity Shows or an Official 4-H Show with 75 or more 4-H members participating in the show. The date and location of these 4-H shows need to be at the Ontario Holstein Branch office prior to the show date and a complete marked catalogue must be forwarded to the Ontario Holstein Branch office no later than 15 days after the shows. • Have been in the Top eight (8) Ontario owned 4-H placings in the Holstein 2012 RAWF Show OR 2012 TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic. • All-Ontario 4-H Awards Require Separate Entry Form and Photo. This entry form to only list those shows where the 4-H member lead his/her own calf. • 4-H Calf owned by 4-H Member - The calf is solely or jointly owned by a 4-H member who used the calf as their 4-H project for 2012. The calf must be transferred into the 4-H members name before June 1, 2012.
NOMINATION & SELECTION
A nomination committee of 3 judges will make selections from each of the classes in late November 2012. A panel of 7 judges (with an 8th judge’s places used in the event of a tie) will choose the winning entries from the nominations. The results will be published in the Winter 2013 issue of The Link Magazine. Presentation of awards will be made at the Ontario Holstein Branch Annual meeting- February 2013. Results will be considered unofficial and cannot be published by any other company until after presentations are made. ENTRIES
Owners are required to submit an official entry form for each animal they wish to enter. Your entry form must be accompanied by a 5x7 photograph or digital photograph taken in the current show season and must show the stage of lactation she was in when she competed. Colour photos are preferred however black and white ones will be accepted. Note: Each entry for each class require a photo (if entering in open class and 4-H class two (2) photos are required)
BREEDER’S HERD PICTURES
By popular demand, exhibitors can submit three (3) individual pictures of the members of your Breeder’s Herd and Junior Breeder’s Herd. However group pictures will still be accepted. Photos must be taken in the 2012 show season, showing the stage of lactation. A Senior Yearling can be nominated in both the milking & non-milking class but, her show winnings are only applicable to the chosen stage. (ie) A yearling could qualify pre-freshening and then qualify after freshening and be eligible for both classes. BUT you must have a picture freshened and non-milking. It is imperative to denote stage of heifer at time of showing as Milking or Non-Milking when listing show results. Cows that have shown in a production class (re: 50,000 kg) will be placed in the class according to their age. ENTRY DEADLINE IS NOVEMBER 16th, 2012

Director Elections (Ontario Branch) Article 2.3 – Board of Directors The Board of Directors shall consist of two (2) Members resident in each of the electoral districts of Western Ontario; West-Central Ontario; East-Central and Northern Ontario; and Eastern Ontario, the immediate Past President (if not otherwise currently a Director), and a Director selected by the National Directors of the Association resident in Ontario. Nomination papers for the four electoral districts of Western; WestCentral; East-Central and Northern Ontario; and Eastern Ontario Holstein must be filed with the Branch office prior to Dec. 31, 2012. Alternating length of Terms for Ontario Branch Directors The process of staggering terms began with the 2010 elections for Western and West Central Ontario, two Directors were elected with one serving a one-year term and the other a two-year term. In 2011, the process occurred in Eastern and East-Central Ontario to finish the process of alternating the terms for Directors. The Director with the one-year term will come up for re-election one year prior to the other Director in their district. In 2012, the Eastern; East-Central and Northern Ontario one-year Director was up for election as well as one Director from Western and one from WestCentral Ontario. Commencing in 2013, there will be elections each year for one Director per district.

Farm: Sunny Maple Holsteins Herd Size: 66 Milking Operation Type: Tie-stall Location: Beeton, ON (Simcoe County) 1. Why did you choose Holsteins? I’m a sixth generation farmer and I grew up with Holsteins. I guess I just liked to work with them so that’s why I continued on. 2. What are your breeding goals? Efficiency is the main thing. What I look for in a cow is a cow that’s going to be around for a significant amount of time. Mature milk is important to me. If you have older cows that are youthful, you’ll produce more milk. Its a lot easier to get 60 to 70 litres out of a mature cow than it is a young one. Until I got my herd “of age,” things were tough. They have to be trouble-free too. The cows work for me, I don’t work for them. 3. What genetic tools are most important in your breeding program? Classification and milk recording are important. We don’t transfer as many embryos now anymore - again, my philosophy is too slow for today’s genomics. I’ve used good bulls - proven bulls. I just don’t jump on the magic carpet. Everything is changing and things turn over quickly. Patience is key. 4. If you could have ANY cow standing in your barn, who would it be and why? Tri-Day Ashlyn would be my ideal cow. She’s been the cow of her time and her offspring are second to none. She’s time-tested. She produces well. She’s got it all. They don’t come any better than her. She’s got to be one of the top cows of all time in my books. 5. What bulls are you currently using? There are a variety that we use. I am generally using Goldwyn sons to non-Goldwyn blood. I’m also using Windbrook and Sid crossed to my Goldwyns. 6. What are you most proud of in your herd/operation? I guess the balance of type and production. I’m pretty proud of the fact that I’ve been able to keep it well-balanced like that for so long. We don’t have any show cows but we’ve always done well with the classifer. 7. If you could improve one thing in your herd/operation, what would it be? More quality and quantity. There’s always room to improve. Easier milk is one thing I’d like to focus on. If I can keep the vet out and the feed costs down, then I win.

9. What is one thing you would tell a young farmer starting out that you wish you had been told? What I’ve noticed is that when I look back in generations, is that everything has doubled. My grandfather milked 20 cows, my dad milked 40 and I’m milking 66. I wish I was milking 80 or 100! A young guy today may think that he has an adequate setup, but truth be told, he’s probably not big enough. Not too many people today have the same sized herd as their parents or grandparents. Looking back, I wish I would have built a bigger barn. 10. What is it about the Holstein cow that keeps you getting up in the morning? The milk cheque! And, of course I enjoy working with nice cows. 11. What are your thoughts on sexed semen? Do you use it? We use it on our heifers. Our virgin heifers all get bred with sexed semen. It makes for easier calvings. When a heifer calves for the first time, they get off to a better start if their calvings are problem-free. 12. Being in the breeding business, what traits do you find sell the best? What trait do you value most? Of the animals that I’ve sold embryos from, it hasn’t been just a cow with a good udder. It’s been a total package of cows with depth of pedigree in classification scores and good sires. It isn’t two or three traits; its everything. 13. Which bull do you feel has had the most impact on your herd over the years? We’re an old herd so that’s a tough one. In past generations, Warden and Astrojet have been influential. Skychief and Linjet have played a key role in the generation after that. Dundee and Goldwyn are probably the bulls that have had the most impact recently. 14. What are the management practices in place on your farm that you feel contribute the most to the success of your operation? Why? We feed a lot of roughage to the cows, so it’s important to make good quality forages to maintain good production. Your cows generally stay healthier that way. It’s one of the reasons we have so many older cows in the barn today.
