editor’s note

LONG LIVE THE JUNIOR SHOW! Growing up in Perth County, the fall was always a much-anticipated time of year. It meant the kick-off to a new school year, but more importantly, the start of the Milverton Fall Fair! I remember the weeks we spent in September working diligently on the crafts and projects we would later take to the fair for judging. I also remember the thrill of walking through the exhibit hall on fair day and seeing a blue or red ribbon dangling from some of those very projects! It comes close, I imagine, to the sense of pride many young 4-Hers must experience when they do well at a show with their calf. Back in August, I was fortunate enough to attend the West-Central Junior Show in Elora. Now don’t get me wrong, nothing beats the excitement of attending one of our major Holstein shows in Ontario each year. The cattle look incredible and the showmanship never disappoints. But there’s something to be said about attending a Junior show as well. Where else can you witness a cute-as-a-button competitor giving his mom a thumbs-up after setting up his calf correctly in the show ring, or a shy ten-year-old in pony-tails holding back a grin as her calf continues to move higher in the class? The camaraderie between the kids was remarkable too. They were, of course, overjoyed when they won a class, but just as pleased when a sibling, friend, or fellow 4-H club member placed high as well. I want to congratulate all of the kids who worked so hard on their 4-H projects this year and thank all of you parents for encouraging your children along the way. ENCOURAGING OUR YOUTH

There is nothing more encouraging than seeing a group of keen young people excited about the Holstein industry. Show season is upon us and it is always interesting to watch these young people develop into great show people, fitters and ambassadors for our business. I have been at some county shows lately and talked to a few returning exhibitors who, in addition to bringing along their son or daughter’s 4-H calf, were influenced to bring a few animals of their own to the show. They wanted to gain the experience of looking after a couple more and have a sense of pride bringing out some of their best from the barn. What it also does is demonstrate the importance of comparing their cows or heifers to others at the show and seeing where they can improve the herd. Congratulations to those parents who have taken this initiative. When I talk to new members of Holstein Canada, I tell them that they should get their children involved in doing the registrations. It gives the kids a sense of responsibility, increases their knowledge of the cows in the herd as well as the bulls being used and allows them to be more part of the farm. It also helps that most kids today have greater computer knowledge than their parents! Whether at home or at a show, allow your children to get involved and take a chance. See how they deal with situations and be there for them when they need advice or a helping hand. They always say that youth are our future, but in order for them to decide if the dairy industry is in their future plans, we must provide as many opportunities as possible for them to get involved.

ADRIAN VANDER WIELEN (pictured above with Elvin Petherick and Jason French) was recently recognized for 25 years of service with the Ontario Holstein Branch. Many will know Adrian as the East-Central Field Representative and as a familiar face at county shows and competitions. What you may not know, however, is that he has been married to his wife, Megan, for almost 30 years, that he enjoys competitive curling, and that he has donated blood 97 times to date (and counting). Professionally, his roots have always been in agriculture. Reflecting on his 25-year tenure with the Branch, he considers it an honour to be part of a great Holstein fraternity and to have played a small, yet active, role in the ongoing development of the Holstein cow.

Growing up near Maxville, Adrian was active on his parents’ Holstein farm, as well as neighbouring dairy, hog and poultry farms. During university, he spent his summers working for EBI, and a year with Western Breeder Services upon graduation. Later, his aptitude with numbers served him well as a researcher and lecturer at Ridgetown College, where he spent three years.

GLEN MCNEIL has been involved in the Holstein business for 34 years and was recently named Vice President of Holstein Canada. In the past, he has acted as President of the Ontario Holstein Branch and President of the Huron County Holstein Club. Glen is an Official Judge with Holstein Canada and has been a Western Director of Holstein Canada since 2004. His involvement, he says, stems from the desire to give himself to an industry that has provided so many great opportunities and experiences for his family. With his wife, Vanda, and son, Curtis, Glen operates Heather Holme Holsteins. The farm was named by a Scottish immigrant family who came to Canada after being deeded land by the Crown near Goderich. To honour their Scottish heritage, they inscribed “Heather Holme” on the bridge leading up the laneway to the farm. When Glen’s parents, Cliff and Evelyn McNeil, purchased the farm in 1933, and later became members of Holstein Canada in 1959, they chose to preserve the Heather Holme name. When Glen and Vanda took over in 1977, they too carried on the prefix.

Your local county show is not only a great socializing and networking event, but it is also a great marketing opportunity for your herd. Whether you take a string of 20 or just one animal, your farm name gets put on the map and just maybe, the next time someone is looking for a show or sale animal, they will turn up at YOUR barn door. 2011 was another successful year for the county shows across Ontario. Some were up in numbers, some were a bit down, but all in all, the shows were well attended by exhibitors and spectators alike. A lot of work goes into a Holstein show before, during and even after the event itself. Congratulations to all of the breeders and exhibitors of the many outstanding cattle shown at the 26 county shows across Ontario this year!

In 1985 we bought the farm where my husband, Dick, grew up from his parents, Hessel & Wilma Baarda. They had purchased the farm in 1954 soon after they emigrated from Holland. The years since 1985 saw many changes including new silos, new equipment, a new drive shed, a new milk house, manure storage pit, buying the farm next door, and some minor changes as well. The biggest change, however, came just last year when we tore down the old dairy barn that housed 40 cows and had a bigger barn built to house 70 cows. During the summer we milked in a make-shift milking station in our heifer barn and housed the cows in the drive shed that we had converted with a temporary feed bunk and hay feeder. It was a long, painstaking summer as we had to walk the cows from the drive shed to the heifer barn, milking in two full shifts and one half shift. We had a very intriguing electric fence system in place to make holding paddocks for cows that were done milking and those yet to be milked. Not to mention the heifers that had given up their home to the milking station and spend the entire summer on pasture, sharing the water facilities with the cows. They, too, had to

be brought in daily to drink. It started out with a few days of rain, so we were walking the cows back and forth through grass that quickly became mud. It went on from there, through mud, and then hard, packed clay when it got dry. During all this, we also put up a high moisture corn silo and a new haylage silo and dug another pond as well. On Oct 1, 2010, on the 25th anniversary of our buying the farm from Dad and Mom, the cows had moved into their new home. Although it was hard work, it was also evident to see the Lord’s blessings along the way. While it was hard on the cows and we did lose some during those four months, we are thankful that none of us were injured in any way. We (Dick, myself, our son Terry and his wife, Tracy, partners at Baarcreek Farm) were all helping out, including our granddaughter, Rachelle, who turned a year old in the middle of all this. Her role was strictly supervisory however. It gave us a sense of being a team and we are thankful that a way was provided to give a future in farming to the next generation.

EX AS A 3-YR-OLD, MY OH MY! Dennis and Wayne Wagler of Claynook Holsteins in New Hamburg, were recently met with some great news when they discovered one of their own, Claynook Loni Elayo, had classified EX-90 two days short of her fourth birthday on September 10. Elayo is one of only 23 cows on record to go Excellent as a 3-Year-Old and because of that, her notoriety is on the rise. “We’ve received lots of requests for photos and plan to have her pictured in a few weeks,” says Dennis. Watch for her soon! GLENGARRY 4-HERS HELP CELEBRATE THE 200TH WILLIAMSTOWN FAIR

- Merina Johnston, Glengarry Members of the Glengarry 4-H Association recently celebrated the 200th anniversary of the Williamstown Fair, held August 5 to 7, by sporting specially designed shirts for their respective Achievement Days. Just under 70 horse and dairy club members expressed their support for this historic event.

“Parents commented on what a great idea it was and how sharp the kids looked,” said South Glengarry Junior 4-H Dairy Club leader, Laura 4-Hers sport their commemorative T-shirts to celebrate the kick-off of the Bi-Centennial MacMillan. “It confirmed that all our hard work was definitely worth it.” Celebrations for the Williamstown Fair. A HELPING PAW... This year’s Perth County Twilight Social, hosted by Rick and Ingrid Portena of Pendora Dairy, was a great success with over 300 people in attendance. Cheese-tasting, butter-making and water balloons were all part of the mix, as was a photo contest, which saw some great submissions. Matt Coulthard won in the “Off, off and Away” category, while Alicia Horne submitted the winning photo (pictured here) for “Down on the Farm,” taken by her sister, Mary Ellen.

The photo is of her Yellow Lab, Maggie, “training” a calf. As it turns Maggie is a great helper to Alicia who farms with her parents Don & Lois Horne of Glenarly Holsteins, Stratford. On the day the photo was taken, Alicia’s sister, Mary Ellen was helping to picture calves for registration wile Alicia helped her father fix the silo. This particular camera-shy calf got away from Mary Ellen before she could picture her. Maggie saved the day, however, and brought the little escape-artist back to Mary Ellen, who had her camera ready! To this day, if Alicia puts a halter on any animal, big or small, Maggie takes a hold of the rope. Her specialty? Taking sick cows out for fresh grass. Just give Maggie the halter and away she goes!

THE ROAD FROM THE ONTARIO HOLSTEIN BRANCH OFFICE IN CAMBRIDGE TO BESLEA FARMS LOCATED JUST OUTSIDE OF SHELBURNE IS A LONG ONE. At times it’s bumpy and unwieldy, with lots of twists and turns, but dotted with breathtaking views of lush fields and roaming farm animals along the way that make the trip entirely worthwhile. In that sense, it’s not unlike the road Chris and Brianne Brown of Beslea Farms Ltd. have travelled since they married and began farming full-time eight years ago. Their journey over the years hasn’t always been easy, but as they have grown accustomed to telling people, where there is a will, there is a way. Growing up miles apart on their respective dairy farms in Walkerton and Shelburne, Chris and Brianne had a lot in common. They both helped with daily farm chores, participated in 4-H and enjoyed living the country life. When they met at a 4-H Leadership camp during their final year of high school, it’s no wonder they became close. In fact, it’s almost like it was meant to be. “I was supposed to go to Florida for March break, but my mom made me go to 4-H camp instead!” Brianne laughs. Fearing the annual camp would be cancelled due to low registration, Brianne’s mom, Joanne, persuaded her daughter to attend. Looking back, Brianne says it was one of the best decisions she could have made, though, she jokes, she would never admit that to her mom now.

After forming a joint venture with Brianne’s father, Dave, and uncle, Brian Besley, of Beslea Farms Ltd., the couple moved their newly acquired herd to Shelburne. Looking back, it’s not surprising they refer to 2003 as “a big year.” Today, the Browns milk 70 Holsteins and 20 Jerseys in a tie-stall barn located a stone’s throw away from their home on 30th Sideroad outside of Shelburne. A coverall added in 2008 houses heifers and dry cows and is located behind the family’s red brick home built by Brianne’s great, great, great grandfather, Henry Besley. It’s the very home she vowed she would one day own. “I said right from the time growing up, ‘this will one day be my home,’” she remarks, pointing to the long wooden table in the family’s bright dining room.

Chris and Brianne became friends from the start, and were thrilled to find out that they would be attending the University of Guelph together in the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture program later that year.

Lucky for Brianne, her sister, Alison, was always more intrigued by the business side of agriculture and while her brother, Brock, enjoyed farming, he decided to pursue a career as a pilot.

The two dated throughout university, and in 2003, graduated and got married. Shortly thereafter, they set out to realize their lifelong dream of farming and bought cows and quota from Chris’s parents who owned 60 head of purebred Holsteins and Guernseys at their farm in Walkerton.

The farm itself consists of 330 acres of land (180 owned, 150 rented) on which corn silage, barley and hay is grown. Chris and Brianne take care of their own haylage and corn silage, but hire out the corn planting, combining and baling. Their cows are thriving and they say they’re pleased with the results.

“This guy,” Brianne says, signaling to Chris, “has never put in better quality feed.” “You should hear our nutritionist rave!” Cows are fed a TMR ration using a mobile TMR mixer the couple purchased recently to make feeding cattle housed at different locations more efficient. Those producing over 36 kgs (approx) with high fat contents are top-dressed with extra barley and protein supplement. Their 90-head herd averages 36 kg of milk per day with a BCA of 223-228-230. A current herd classification of 7 EX, 42 VG, 52 GP and 6 G is a testament to Chris and Brianne’s hard work over the years, as is the fact that in their last classification, they achieved their first family of EX/VG cows spanning four generations. Hard work aside, they’re quick to acknowledge that putting together a team of highly qualified individuals has had a huge impact on their success. “In creating a team, we didn’t go with the cheapest,” says Chris. “We went with the best. Believe it or not, it saves you money in the long run.” The Browns credit their cream-of-the-crop including their vet, nutritionist, banker and accountant and say that creating a team CONTINUED ON PAGE 20

that challenges them, and one that they can challenge in turn, keeps everyone sharp. Over the years, several changes have taken place on the farm, starting first and foremost with the Brown’s family. It wasn’t long before Chris and Brianne started looking at tractor shopping in a whole new light. “We brought one tractor with us to the farm,” says Chris, “and were shopping for a second. When we were at the dealership, Brianne’s first question was, ‘can we get a buddy seat installed?’” In 2004, their first child, Carter, (now 7) was born, followed a few years later by Payton (5), Cohen (3) and Griffin (18 months). The two oldest are very active on the farm and enjoy going to the barn and helping dip cows before and after milking. Harvest time is one of their favourite times of year as it means long days out on the tractor with mom and dad. Fortunately for Chris and Brianne, they receive tremendous support from their families and say they couldn’t do what they do without them.

problem cases. Beslea Farms’ breeding program has produced a number of stand-out cows over the years. Beslea Leader Lynette EX 3E 1*, was the very first excellent cow bred at Beslea and close to half of the current herd traces back to her. Her great grand daughter, Beslea Goldwyn Lacy VG 87 3YR, was bred by Chris and Brianne and is still active in the herd today. Beslea Patrol Sinthia VG 87, a two star brood cow, is also considered to have greatly influenced the herd and has seen several family members sell to Ferme Blondin. Her granddaughter, Beslea Champion Cinder VG 87, is another cow Chris and Brianne are proud to have bred and enjoy working with today. In addition to the many homegrown successes bred at Beslea Farms, Chris and Brianne try to buy one high-end pedigreed cow to add to their herd each year. “There’s a lot we like that we can’t afford,” Chris admits. “But we’ve had good luck with what we’ve been able to purchase to date.”

“We strive to get better by setting goals for ourselves every year; it allows us to become more efficient and increases genetics in the herd.” - Chris Brown Brianne’s sister, Alison, along with Chris’s parents, Fred and Carolyn, and sister, Lindsay, regularly help out on the farm with milking, haying and other chores. Brianne’s mom, Joanne, and babysitter, Jaime, help care for the couple’s four children, which allows Brianne more time to work alongside Chris. Though Chris and Brianne work side-by-side on the farm, they each have their own areas of expertise. “Brianne looks after the showing and marketing; she’s good at it,” explains Chris. “I do the breeding and feeding.” “The physical breeding, yes,” Brianne says, with a laugh. “The breeding decisions we make together!” The Brown’s breeding philosophy is to breed for type and feed for production. Chris says he’s not afraid to use old genetics and regularly uses sires like Goldwyn, Outside and Sanchez. Other bulls include Braxton, Fever, Roy, Bolton, and Alta Zap, Rush and Minister. Test sires are used solely for cleanup, along with the Brown’s own bull for www.ontario.holstein.ca

In 2005, they bought Wedgewood Aerocerf Patricia at the Royal Winter Fair’s Sale of Stars. She was short bred at the time, and without knowing whether they’d end up with a heifer calf or not, it was a risky buy at best. Lucky for the Browns, it worked out in their favour when she gave birth to Wedgewood Roy Patsy, who went on to classify EX as a five-year-old earlier this year. Patsy has two Alta Minister sons which are used for breeding – one on their own farm and one at a commercial herd. Patsy’s daughter, Patatina, will classify as a two-year-old later this year.

2008 brought with it more changes for the Browns. That year, Chris and Brianne became 50/50 owners of Beslea Farms with Brian. In 2009, they bought his share of cows and quota and became full owners (Brian now raises ewes and cash crops 1000 acres of land nearby). Since that time, the progressive couple has made a number of modifications to their operation which have resulted in greater milk value, higher-quality crops and lower somatic cell counts. THE 15TH ANNUAL ONTARIO SUMMER SHOW FEATURED RECORD TEMPERATURES, YET CATTLE PRESENTATION AND CARE AT THE SHOW WAS PHENOMENAL.

Judge Dan Doner and his associate, John Devries, both indicated what a great honour it was to be asked to evaluate and place such an outstanding group of high quality animals. For the second consecutive year, Adam Hodgins and his partners captured Grand Champion honours, this year with the first place four-year-old, Weeksdale Goldwyn Dakota. She placed ahead of the Reserve Champion five-year-old, Extondale Goldwyn Elaine, while Honourable Mention was earned by a third Goldwyn daughter Craigcrest Rubies Gold Rejoice who was earlier awarded Senior two-year-old and Intermediate Champion. Reserve and honourable mention Intermediate champions were presented to Cavanaleck BG Scarlett and Quality M A Finie respectively.

Champion calf honours went to Gary Troup on Benrise Goldwyn Barbie, followed by Jill Brown with Frankhaven Adolph Frolic and Honourable Mention to Rachel Roefs on Ranhaven Jazzmin. Earning the Champion clipper award was Rory Timlin followed by Rachel Jebson, Quintin Baird and Evan Stanley. The Ontario Summer show has become recognized as one of the premier shows in Canada due in part to the efforts of a hard working show committee and the great support of area sponsors. Other highlights of the week included a National Judges School with participation from across Canada and a few select international judges. The Salem herd was dispersed and the Influence of Allie sale took place, making the 2011 Summer show week a historical district event.

Junior Champion rosettes were presented to Rustowill B Apple Superb, the first place Summer Yearling with Reserve and Honourable Mention awards going to the top two Junior Yearlings, Leachland Gold Medal and Benrise Goldwyn Barbie. Premier Breeder and Exhibitor Awards for both Junior and Senior divisions were won by Crovalley Holsteins, who won three individual classes, and placed second in three more. One of the key factors contributing to the success of the show was the energy and enthusiasm provided by the East-Central district 4-H members as they competed in showmanship and clipping competitions. Maxville Holstein Show

THE MAXVILLE HOLSTEIN SHOW WAS HELD IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE MAXVILLE FAIR ON SATURDAY, JUNE 25TH.

The rainy weather that came the week of the show proved to benefit exhibitors and spectators alike and drew a large crowd who enjoyed the 146 head that paraded for Judge Toshihiko “Tommy” Araki. Mr. Araki, who hails from Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan, very capably placed the competitive classes of heifers and finally chose senior calf Frankhaven Adolf Frolic as the Junior Champion of the show. She is owned by Brownlands Farm and 4-H member, Jill Brown of Enterprise, Ont. Reserve Junior Champion went to the first place Summer Yearling, Smithden Goldwyn Breezy for partners Barclay Phoenix, Mapelwood Wood Farms, O’Connor Land & Cattle Co., Aaron Eaton, Eric Salonen & Jeremy Vis, while Honourable Mention went to Philmardo Why Not Get Lucky, an Intermediate calf for Philmardo Farms and Barclay Phoenix.

In the final Championship Class, RockyMountain Gold Winter, the winner of the Senior Three-Year-Old Class, was selected as Grand Champion of the show for Ferme Blondin, Vanhaven and Butz-Hill. Reserve Champion was also taken by Ferme Blondin on Senior Two-Year-Old, Dubeau Jasper December. Honourable Mention and the Gaylea Production Award winner for the show was Brady View Dundee Razzle for Signature, Glennholme and Todd Edwards. Concluding the show, the Premier Breeder banner was presented to Cherry Crest Holsteins with Ferme Blondin taking home the Premier Exhibitor banner. Winning the Breeders Herd Class was Montdale Holsteins. Premier Sire of the show was captured by Braedale Goldwyn.

With the top two placing 4-H projects shown in each class returning to the ring to compete for 4-H Champion calf, Jill Brown pulled out first with Frankhaven Adolf Frolic. Capturing Reserve Champion was Kenny McRae with Bonnie Brae Prospect Jade, followed by Bonnie Brae Jasper Cora for Jamie Fanning as Honourable Mention. Junior Herd Class Winner was Velthuis Farms, with Cherry Crest Holsteins winning the banners for Junior Premier Breeder and Exhibitor. Over the lunch break, the Showmanship Competition was held. Judge Kyle Rivington of Carp, Ont. worked through a Senior and Junior class of showpersons. Holstein Canada’s 2011 Enrolment Program S-S Holsteins

MANY PEOPLE MAY HAVE SEEN THE MEMBERSHIP NAME, ONTARIO INC. 1024248 IN SOME OF THE HIGH PRODUCTION RECORDS LISTS AND WONDERED WHO IT IS. THE FARM IS OPERATED BY ANDY SENN, ALONG WITH HIS BROTHER-IN-LAW, FRANK SUTER. TOGETHER THEY MAKE UP S-S HOLSTEINS. In 1989 they emigrated from Switzerland and purchased an 80-cow operation in Prescott County. Since then, they have been continually expanding their herd. In addition to 400 milking cows, 320 heifers are currently raised at another site by Frank. In total, they farm over 2,200 acres. Andy Senn and his family have won numerous Superior Production awards In 2007 Andy entered the new herd enrolment program with encouragement from his AI since they started official recording milk and classifying their herd a few supplier, ABS. At the time there were many young sire daughters in the herd so they were years ago. (Photo Submitted) interested in obtaining classification data. Today, over 90 per cent of the herd now has papers and their purity is increasing with each generation. The incentives provided by ABS were, of course, what prompted them to start classifying their cows, but Andy says that even without such incentives, he would continue to classify. He considers it an extremely useful tool to monitor the herd trends in feet, legs and udders and a good way of validating the success of his breeding program. In fact, he has also begun to do mid-round visits, which better fit the schedule of his 3X large milking herd.

Herdsman Tony Boos encouraged Andy to go on official milk recording because he felt that a lot of the cows would make exceptional records. He was right. The rolling herd average on 304 head is 12,631 kgs of Milk, 502 kgs of Fat and 406 kgs of Protein (282-301-285). Andy has won numerous Superior Production awards in the past few years, including the Gay Lea Combined Component Award for highest fat and protein in 2010 for three-year-old S-SHolstein Jet Stream 1192. She produced 18,713 kgs of Milk 1,075 kgs of Fat and 592 kgs of Protein (391-607-387). S-S-HOLSTEIN BOLTON 1309 also has an impressive track record, having produced 18,292 kgs of milk (427-396-391) in her first lactation. Another cow that combines both type and production is S-S-HOLSTEIN TOUCHDOWN 978. She has gone Very Good and recently finished with a 5-9 record of 19,808 kgs (394-474-265). Because she is only 50 per cent pure, she doesn’t qualify for awards, but she has a pair of daughters who are following nicely in her footsteps. Andy plans to continue to classify and milk record the herd and looks forward to improving the type and winning more production awards in the future.

2011 REGULATIONS & ELIGIBILITY This competition is effective for the 2011 Show Season and is open for residents of Ontario exclusively. • Animal must be shown minimal at one (1) Ontario Branch recognized show to be eligible. • Be a Registered Holstein • Be owned by or in partnership with the exhibitor who is an Ontario Resident • Have won 1st or 2nd prize at an Ontario Holstein Branch county or regional show • Have won 1st, 2nd, or 3rd prize at Ontario Spring Discovery, Ontario Summer Show, Eastern Ontario Championship or Autumn Opportunity Shows • Have been in the Top eight (8) Ontario owned placings at the 2011 Royal Winter Fair • Only one entry for Junior Breeder’s Herd per exhibitor • Only one entry for Breeder’s Herd per exhibitor • Senior animals must qualify in milking class • Cows shown in production classes will enter in the Mature Cow class *Placings at Shows outside of Ontario should be included but are not considered as Qualifying Shows.

4-H Classes

• You must be a member of a 4-H Dairy Calf Club. • You must have shown your project at your club achievement day • 4-H Members must lead their own calf in at least two (2) Ontario Holstein Branch recognized shows but the animal need only qualify in one (1) show to be eligible • Entry form must show calf ’s actual placing in the class as well as 4-H placing in the class • Have been 1st or 2nd 4-H Calf (in its class) at an Ontario Holstein Branch county or regional show. • 1st, 2nd, 3rd 4-H Holstein Calf at Ontario Summer Show, Eastern Ontario Championship or Autumn Opportunity Shows or an Official 4-H Show with 75 or more 4-H members participating in the show. The date and location of these 4-H shows need to be at the Ontario Holstein Branch office prior to the show date and a complete marked catalogue must be forwarded to the Ontario Holstein Branch office no later than 15 days after the shows. • Have been in the Top eight (8) Ontario owned 4-H placings in the Holstein 2011 RAWF Show OR 2011 Canadian 4-H Classic. • All-Ontario 4-H Awards Require Separate Entry Form and Photo. This entry form to only list those shows where the 4-H member lead his/her own calf. • 4-H Calf owned by 4-H Member - The calf is solely or jointly owned by a 4-H member who used the calf as their 4-H project for 2011. The calf must be transferred into the 4-H members name before June 1, 2011.

NOMINATION & SELECTION

A nomination committee of 3 judges will make selections from each of the classes in late November 2011. A panel of 7 judges (with an 8th judge’s places used in the event of a tie) will choose the winning entries from the nominations. The results will be published in the Winter 2012 issue of The Link Magazine. Presentation of awards will be made at the Ontario Holstein Branch Annual meeting- February 2012. Results will be considered unofficial and cannot be published by any other company until after presentations are made. ENTRIES

Owners are required to submit an official entry form for each animal they wish to enter. Your entry form must be accompanied by a 5x7 photograph or digital photograph taken in the current show season and must show the stage of lactation she was in when she competed. Colour photos are preferred however black and white ones will be accepted. Note: Each entry for each class require a photo (if entering in open class and 4-H class two (2) photos are required)

BREEDER’S HERD PICTURES

By popular demand, exhibitors can submit three (3) individual pictures of the members of your Breeder’s Herd and Junior Breeder’s Herd. However group pictures will still be accepted. Photos must be taken in the 2011 show season, showing the stage of lactation. A Senior Yearling can be nominated in both the milking & non-milking class but, her show winnings are only applicable to the chosen stage. (ie) A yearling could qualify pre-freshening and then qualify after freshening and be eligible for both classes. BUT you must have a picture freshened and non-milking. It is imperative to denote stage of heifer at time of showing as Milking or Non-Milking when listing show results. Cows that have shown in a production class (re: 50,000 kg) will be placed in the class according to their age. ENTRY DEADLINE IS NOVEMBER 18th, 2011

Dreaming Big in Haldimand County

BORN AND RAISED ON A 4TH GENERATION FAMILY DAIRY FARM, 20-YEAR-OLD CHRISTINE ARMSTRONG OF CAYUGA, ONTARIO IS MAKING HER MARK IN THE DAIRY INDUSTRY AS A JUNIOR MEMBER.

Christine became a Junior Member in April of this year under the prefix Royal Lynn Holsteins. When picking a prefix Christine wanted to choose something that would incorporate her middle name and be remembered by others in the industry. Her enthusiasm and positive attitude towards the future of the dairy industry is seen through her participation in 4-H where she has completed 20 projects and has been on Haldimand County’s 4-H Royal Team for six consecutive years. Impressively, she has made the conformation cut every year. Last year she participated in 4-H’s Go for the Gold competition which resulted in a fourth place finish at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. Christine has also competed in the Field Crops team at the Royal six times where she has place 1st place for 1st and 2nd cut hay. After much success with her 4-H project, Kouwenberg Cherry Loaf, at the Classic 4-H Junior Show in 2010, Christine became interested in joining Holstein Canada as a Junior Member. Being a Junior Member would allow her to begin to establish herself in the dairy industry as an individual and would also open other possibilities as the sole owner of a 4-H project. Kouwenberg Cherry Loaf placed 3rd in the Summer Yearling Class at the Classic 4-H Junior Show and was named All-Ontario Honourable Mention 4-H Summer Yearling. In addition to her success with

Christine Armstrong works full-time as a Herdsman at Ardross Farms Cherry Loaf, Christine was Grand Showman and Champion Calf at Lincoln County Fair and Simcoe County Fair and Reserve Grand Champion at Rockton World’s Fair. After speaking with Jamie Farrell at the Ontario Spring show earlier this year about purchasing a 4-H heifer, he sparked Christine’s interest in Lilac Lodge Goldwyn Lani. Accompanied by uncles Dale and David Lang, Christine travelled to the home of Rob Hefferman where Lani was currently co-owned and housed. Lani is a Goldwyn September Calf out of Bridgecross Shottle Lark who goes three generations back to Ravenswell Lydia. She is backed by nine generations of Very Good or Excellent Holsteins and was recently second September calf at the Brant-Wentworth County Show. That same day, Rob Hefferman took them to Kingsway Holsteins where Kingsway Sanchez Almanac, a December Calf, caught Christine’s eye. Almanac is a Sanchez out of Kingsway Goldwyn Abrakazoo, a Very Good 88 point two-year-old who is currently making herself known in the show ring. Almanac goes back three generations to Kingsway Terrason Allie and is backed by eight generations of Very Good or Excellent cows. She placed fourth 4-H calf at the summer show this year, second at Brant-Wentworth County show and Junior Champion at Lincoln County show.

In the end, Christine chose the Kingsway calf as her 4-H project, but currently owns both Lilac Lodge Goldwyn Lani and Kingsway Sanchez Almanac under her Royal Lynn prefix. When purchasing animals, she looks for deep-pedigreed cow families with a balance of type and production.

THIS YEAR THERE WERE FOUR JUNIOR DAIRY SHOWS HELD ACROSS THE PROVINCE. These shows are an excellent opportunity for the junior 4-Hers to compete at a regional level, but they also provide an opportunity for hands-on learning as well as meeting other keen dairy youth in their region. The Eastern Ontario Junior Show was held July 2-3, 2011 in conjunction with the EBI 4-H Showcase. Judge Jason Smith of Lansdowne had his work cut out for him as he placed 50 keen 4-Hers in both showmanship and conformation. Taking top honours for the day in showmanship was Jenna Hedden of Renfrew County with reserve going to Kaitlin Cavangh of Carleton. Champion Calf went to Nathan Vandekamp of Renfrew County on Liberty Damion Lazygirl and reserve went to Shannan MacPherson of Glengarry County on Gleneil Grand Prix Vogue. At the Western Ontario Junior Show held on July 11 & 12, 2011 at the Outdoor Farm Show facilities in Woodstock, 69 keen juniors showcased their talents to judge Norm McNaughton of London. Holstein Youth County on Tarten Inn Butterknife and reserve went to Cassie Hawthorne of Perth County on Briar-Berry Cntnd-Tabby-Red. The East-Central Junior Show was held July 5 & 6, 2011 at the Orono Fairgrounds. Bobby Jarrell of Corbyville, had the tough task of placing the 42 participants. Outside the show ring, Christine along with her parents Dan and Karen Armstrong and her brother, Carl, cash crop 2,800 acres of winter wheat, soybeans and barley. Growing up, Christine spent a lot of time at her uncles Dale and David Lang of Ardross Holsteins where she learned the basics of dairy farming and fostered her love for the Holstein breed.

“We strive to get better by setting goals for ourselves every year,” says Chris. “It allows us to become more efficient and increases genetics in the herd.”

In 2003, Ardross Holsteins started to invest in deep pedigree cattle. Glen Drummond Molly and Glen Drummond Katrina, both excellent cows sired by Rudolph from the Splendor family, were one of the first purchased animals who made a name for themselves on the family farm. Today, Lexis CQ Dundee Dazzle, a 2007 All-Ontario Honourable mention four-year-old Dundee from the Ravenswell Lydia family, and Gen-I-Beq Talent Splach, a 2009 All-Ontario fiveyear-old Red and White Holstein from the Splendor family, call Ardross Holsteins home.

When the Browns first started farming in 2003, the herd’s somatic cell count was 433,000. Today, that number is under 120,000. By adopting an aggressive management style, they’ve also increased their milk value from $5,030 to $6,906 per cow at 305 days. This year, they hope to decrease the age at first calving from 26 months to 24. A new heifer cover-all and new calf hutches installed last year will allow heifers to be weaned earlier and grow bigger in order to calf at a younger age. Both Chris and Brianne are big believers in continuing education and participate in industry events and workshops whenever possible.

In May, they hosted a group of 45 young dairy enthusiasts to their farm as part of the “Dairy Sense” conference organized by the Ardross Holsteins is a Master Breeder Herd that currently milks Ontario Holstein Branch and 4-H Ontario. Chris and Brianne have been through a lot, both personally and financially, and have the sleepless nights to prove it. Inter-County Judging Holstein Youth Competition Results 2011

OUTSTANDING CATTLE, HARDWORKING VOLUNTEERS AND BRIGHT PARTICIPANTS FROM ACROSS ONTARIO MADE FOR A SUCCESSFUL DAY FOR THE 2011 INTER-COUNTY JUDGING COMPETITION, WHICH TOOK PLACE AT THE METCALFE FAIRGROUNDS ON WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 3RD. IN TOTAL, 85 EAGER PARTICIPANTS TOOK PART IN THE COMPETITION, JUDGING NINE CLASSES OF EXCEPTIONAL CATTLE FROM AREA FARMS THROUGHOUT THE DAY.

After a full day of dairy judging, participants convened in the main building where they enjoyed a wonderful chicken dinner served by committee and fair board volunteers, and waited to find out which four participants had won the ultimate prize of a 10-day all-expensespaid trip to Madison, Wisconsin to attend the World Dairy Expo. Among the day’s top winners were Natalie Holtby of Durham West, Scott Groniger of Carleton, Mark Hazeleger of Oxford and Rachel Jebson, also of Durham West. Holtby, Groniger and Jebson, along with teammate Katrina Carruthers of South Simcoe (who is rounding out the team in Mark’s absence), will represent Ontario at World Dairy Expo where they will compete in the 90th National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest. Accompanied by Bert Stewart and Murray Reissner, the team will travel to Madison for 10 days in October. Justin Crowley, who has participated in the trip in the past, was High Individual winner in the senior category. Crowley also walked away with awards in High Reasons, High Holsteins and High Jerseys. The winning senior team was made up of Scott Groniger and Olivia Groniger, a brother-sister duo from Carleton, coached by Diane Groniger. Michael Lupton and Gary Hazeleger, coached by Dean Karn, were runners-up. In the Junior division, Josh Karn had a successful day, winning High Individual and High Jerseys. Karn was also runner-up in High Holsteins, High Placings, High Reasons and High Team, along with teammate Alex Vondervoort and coach Dean Karn. High Individual runner-up was Brent Sikma (Durham East), who along with his brother, Connor Sikma and coach Glenn Barkey, also won High Team. This year’s event was a resounding success and we would like to express our thanks to the fantastic group of volunteers and committee members who went above and beyond to make everything run smoothly! Director Elections (Ontario Branch) Article 2.3 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Board of Directors The Board of Directors shall consist of two (2) Members resident in each of the electoral districts of Western Ontario; West-Central Ontario; East-Central and Northern Ontario; and Eastern Ontario, the immediate Past President (if not otherwise currently a Director), and a Director selected by the National Directors of the Association resident in Ontario. Nomination papers for the four electoral districts of Western; WestCentral; East-Central and Northern Ontario; and Eastern Ontario Holstein must be filed with the Branch office prior to Dec. 31, 2011. Alternating length of Terms for Ontario Branch Directors The process of staggering terms began with the 2010 elections for Western and West Central Ontario, two Directors were elected with one serving a one-year term and the other a two-year term. In 2011, the process occurred in Eastern and East-Central Ontario to finish the process of alternating the terms for Directors. The Director with the one-year term will come up for re-election one year prior to the other Director in their district. In 2012, the Eastern; East-Central and Northern Ontario one-year Director will be up for election as well as one Director from Western and one from WestCentral Ontario. Starting in 2013, there will be elections each year for one Director per district in Southern Ontario.

Farm: Willdina Holsteins Herd Size: 56 Milking Operation Type: Tie-stall Location: Bowmanville, ON (Durham County) 1. Why did you choose Holsteins? My dad started in 1957 with a herd of grade Guernseys and Holsteins. The Holsteins outmilked the others, so that’s what we chose when we started getting serious about registering cows in 1974. We’ve been Holsteins ever since, though we did purchase a Jersey in 1999 and now have 10 of them in the barn.

entire lives. It takes a special talent and 365-day-a-year care to keep them at that level. Not everyone can do that; you have to know what your limits are. It would be great to be able to raise them to the point where someone could see their potential and take them to the next level. That’s one of the reasons we sold Liza. It’s everyone’s dream to breed a cow like her, and as someone once told me, “if you can do it once, you can do it again.” I think he’s probably right.

2. What are your breeding goals? We look for balanced breeding and place equal emphasis on components and type. I like a tall cow with quality udders. She should be marketable and generate interest. In other words, people have to be interested in her embryos.

9. What is one thing you would tell a young farmer starting out that you wish you had been told? Get into a top cow family – one that’s up and coming – when you’re young. Set goals and stay focused and you will be successful.

3. What genetic tools are most important in your breeding program? We place high value on milk recording, classification and bull proofs. We go on a lot of bull daughter tours to see which bulls do well, or don’t do well, on certain cows. Showing our animals allows us to evaluate where our breeding program is at and pinpoint the areas we need to improve upon. 4. Describe the ultimate/ideal cow for your operation: The ideal cow is a cow that’s VG as a 2-YR old and EX with multiple E’s by the time she’s 10 years old. These are the types of cows people see in your barn and want to somehow be a part of, whether through ownership or the purchase of embryos. A cow that passes on good genetics through her daughters is always desirable.

10. What is it about the Holstein cow that keeps you getting up in the morning? One of the highlights for me is when a calf is being born and being able to ask myself, “did I make the right cross?” I can usually tell pretty quickly if I have. Being able to take that calf as far as I can take it is extremely rewarding. 11. What are your thoughts on sexed semen? Do you use it? We’ve used it on a few Jerseys with mixed results. The most important thing is to use the bulls you want to use, for the proper matings. To date, sexed semen on these bulls hasn’t always been available. It’s a tool that’s out there, though we haven’t used it to a great extent.

12. How many cows do you flush each year? Do you sell most of them? Where do you sell them to? We flush 8 to 10 each year, but exclusively to fill an embryo order 5. What bulls are you currently using? At the moment, we’re using Windbrook, Sid, Fever, Sanchez and a or bull contract. Embryos sitting in the tank are no good to anyone. Those we have sold have gone to various countries, including the UK, little bit of Goldwyn where we can. Germany and Australia. We’ve found that embryos from the Lila Z and Barbie families are in high demand. 6. What are you most proud of in your herd/operation? Receiving our Master Breeder shield in 2003 was a huge achievement for us. We’ve had three Jerseys nominated All-Canadian in the last 13. I’d have to say, it would probably be to spend more time on our breeding program and the marketing of our own genetics. At the present time, I’m away from home a lot as a Board Member of both Semex and EastGen, but in the near future, I hope to have more time focusing on the operation at home and enjoying the little things more.

14. Which bull do you feel has had the most impact on your herd over the years? Butlerview Mattador turned our herd around and put us in the right direction in the late 70s. Storm and Goldwyn have also had a major impact.

15. What are the management practices in place on your farm that you feel contribute the most to the success of your operation? Why? On our farm, it’s a total team effort. Everyone is involved, works together, and cares deeply about the cows. There is an all-around 8. If you could have ANY cow standing in your barn, who would it be and why? Cows like Licorice, Frosty and Celebrity are all awesome cows. I’d focus on the same goals, which is important.
