A new excellent cow or a very good two-year-old is a breeding accomplishment. These cows are the highlight of any herd visit and are a point of pride for their breeders and owners. From January through to the end of March, there were XXX 1st time excellent cows and XXX very good two-year-olds classified in Ontario. These numbers are a true testament to the commitment our breeders have to breeding structurally sound cows that will stand the test of time. Congratulations to the owners and breeders of Ontario’s new 1st time excellent cows and very good two-year-olds!

FARMER’S ALMANAC: SUNNY, PLEASANT DAYS AHEAD In the conversations I’ve had with many of you over the phone lately, the weather has inevitably come up. “Still a little cool, but at least it’s dry,” or, “We got the beans in today,” or my favourite yet: “Sorry I haven’t gotten back to you sooner - we’ve been cutting hay for the past 22 hours!” Before working in the ag sector, I have to admit, I’ve never paid much attention. That is, until I started the countdown to my June 2011 wedding, which was being held - ceremony and all outside at a farm. “Rain on your wedding day is good luck!” my bridesmaids reminded me as the clouds rolled in and the skies opened upon us on the way to the hairdressers that morning. Looking back, I realize just how lucky we were. By early afternoon, the rain had stopped. The sun even peeked through as we were saying our vows! Fortunately for us, we did have a plan B, though I’m glad we didn’t have to use it. And I say “fortunately” because in the world of farming and fieldwork, backup plans simply don’t exist. When they weather is good, you farmers go hard. When it’s not, you look out your kitchen windows to empty fields where your tractors should be and you wait. It’s as simple - if not frustrating – as that. With a wet spring behind us, and many Twilight meetings and summer bbq’s to look forward to, let’s hope the Farmer’s Almanac has it right for July: temperatures in the low to mid 20s, 20 mm less rain than average, and “sunny, pleasant” days ahead. Oh, and a few thunderstorms thrown in for good measure too! I wish you all a summer filled with sunshine, fond memories, and just enough rain to make your crops grow. THE IMPORTANCE OF CLASSIFYING Over several decades, Holstein Canada’s All Breeds Classification Program has been one that has evolved with the changing times based on what we need our Holstein cow to look like. The Classification Program that they have developed has also trained international classifiers to evaluate cows properly and take our system to start in their country. Classifying herds has been a great way to analyze which cow families are consistent and that has given breeders an opportunity to market strong families on a global scale. But foremost, classifying your cows gives you a valuable management tool. Breeders sometimes have a dose of “owneritis” where they either think that their cows are the best or that they aren’t much at all. By having someone with an unbiased opinion evaluate your cows and compare them to the national average, you are able to determine the quality of your herd. From this evaluation, you can pinpoint where the strengths and weaknesses are in your herd and confidently select bulls that can improve those traits for the next generation. What you are doing is building an animal that will produce great volumes of milk over many lactations. Factories depend on machines to produce their product efficiently without the machine break down due to stress. Dairy people need to build more efficient cows with great longevity and classification is a tool to help do that. The classifier may only be in your barn for a short period of time, but that brief visit can result in cows that stay with you longer and continue to produce high volumes of milk.

Sandy O’Hara , Dandyland Farm

EAST-CENTRAL DIRECTOR, SANDY O’HARA, joined the Ontario Holstein Board of Directors in February. Sandy and her husband, Dennis, along with Dennis’s brother, Dan, own and operate Dandyland Farm in Schomberg. The O’Haras milk 65 cows in a free-stall operation. They believe strongly in the merits of cow comfort and longevity, and in 2001, started using sand bedding to keep their herd of 185 Holsteins content. The family farms a total of 650 acres of owned and rented land, consisting of hay, corn, mixed grain, barley and wheat. Dandyland Farm truly is a family-run operation. It all began back in 1975 when Dennis’s parents were considering selling the family farm from which they ran their cow/calf operation. Wishing to keep the farm in the O’Hara family, Dennis took over the farm with the intention of selling milk. He immediately started his 40 grade heifers on the National Identification Program and today boasts a completely homebred registered herd with 88 per cent classified as either VG or EX. The O’Haras strive for quality milk and have taken top honours for Quality Milk in York Region in past years.

Sandy and Dennis both work on the farm full-time. Their son, Devin, works as a Classifier for Holstein Canada, and daughter, Ashley, has recently completed her second year of studies in agricultural science at the University of Guelph’s Ontario Agricultural College. Both children are highly involved in the farm and help out whenever they can.

PAUL MACLEOD SAYS HE’S THRILLED TO BE INVOLVED IN THE FUTURE DIRECTION OF HOLSTEIN CANADA and could not be more excited about his new role as President. He was recently named Holstein Canada’s new President at the National Convention held in Halifax. MacLeod has served as the Vice President of Holstein Canada for the past year and has been heavily involved in the industry for as long as he can remember. Along with his wife, Ellen, and children, Jared (Caitlin), Kyle and Jessica (Doug), Paul owns and operates Darcroft Farms, just outside of Woodstock. Together they milk 65 cows in a tie-stall barn and farm 550 acres made up of alfalfa hay (dry hay and haylage), and corn (high moisture and silage). A two-time Master Breeder Shield recipient, MacLeod is always looking to make changes that will improve his herd. They are currently in the process of selling one farm with the intention of building a larger, free-stall operation at another location. This new facility will allow the MacLeods to milk as many as 200 cows in the future.

Darcroft Farms was started in the 1950s by Paul’s father, and was originally located in Niagara Falls. Later, the operation moved to Stevensville, where Paul and his brother, Ron, took over. Another move followed, this time to Woodstock, and when Paul and his brother divided the operation in 2003, Paul stayed at the farm in Woodstock. Ontario Spring Discovery Show

THE ONTARIO SPRING DISCOVERY SHOW CELEBRATED ITS 10TH ANNIVERSARY AND IN DOING SO IT INTRODUCED SOME NEW AND EXCITING CHANGES. THE 2011 SHOW TOOK PLACE ON MARCH 30TH-31ST IN THE BRAND NEW FACILITIES AT THE ANCASTER FAIRGROUNDS IN JERSEYVILLE, ONTARIO. ALONG WITH A LOCATION CHANGE, THE SHOW INTRODUCED A DECEMBER CALF CLASS FOR ALL BREEDS. AN EMBRYO SILENT AUCTION WAS ALSO FEATURED.

Breeder’s Cup Results

STARTED IN PERTH COUNTY A FEW YEARS AGO, BREEDER’S CUP COMPETITIONS ARE BECOMING INCREASINGLY POPULAR. This year, over 20 counties held their very own Breeder’s Cup, many for the first time. The competition gives breeders the opportunity to showcase some of their finest animals from the comfort of their own barns. Judges spend the day traveling to farms throughout the county, evaluating animals on site. They then place the animals at the end of the day, and declare an overall winner. The Ontario Holstein Branch would like to thank this year’s judges and participants, and congratulate all of the winners on their fine achievements!!

THE ONTARIO HOLSTEIN BRANCH RECENTLY HELD TWO OF THEIR THREE SCHEDULED DAIRY CATTLE EVALUATION CLINICS. The clinic for East-Central Ontario was held May 21 at the Shannonville Fairgrounds and the Western and West-Central Ontario clinic was held on May 28 at Carson’s in Listowel. Both clinics were very well attended with over 200 judges participating. Thank you to the Hastings and Bruce County Holstein Clubs for organizing the clinics and to all who volunteered their time. The Eastern Ontario Dairy Cattle Evaluation Clinic will be the third and final evaluation clinic of the year and it is scheduled for July 6, 2011 at the Chesterville Fairgrounds.

Holstein Canada’s 2011 Enrolment Program Van der Ploeg Farms

WALTON, ON

AFTER MOVING TO CANADA FROM HOLLAND IN AUGUST OF 2007, THE VAN DER PLOEGS HAVE BUILT AN INCREDIBLY WELL-MANAGED PUREBRED HOLSTEIN HERD FROM THE GROUND UP WITH LOTS OF HARD WORK AND THE HELP OF HOLSTEIN CANADA. Van der Ploeg Farms is

owned by Renze and Klasina Van der Ploeg and their five actively involved children, Alex (20), Yris (13), Rienk (11), Marissa (9), and Thymen (4). They farm under the prefix Myrta Holsteins which stands for the first letters of each of their children’s names. After selling their land and quota in Friesland, Holland they purchased 150 acres in Walton Ontario. For the first 15 months after arriving in Canada, Renze worked on a 260 cow free-stall herd doing the milking and hooftrimming on a farm in Winthrop, ON. January 13, 2009 marked the completion of their own free-stall operation in Walton, with a double 10 Parabone Parlour and two bunker silos. In 2010, the Van der Ploegs added another bunker silo, a hay storage shed and more stalls for heifers.

The family-operated herd took advantage of becoming a member of Holstein Canada towards the end of 2009, after they finished purchasing an entire herd of purebred Holsteins to fill their quota. Renze and Klasina felt it was important to become members in order to incorporate NLID tags, CanWest DHI and regular classification to use as management tools. The Van der Ploeg are also use heat detection and AfiFarm, purchased through Norwell Dairy Systems, as key herd improvement tools. Becoming members of Holstein Canada has proved to be a beneficial management tool on their farm. CanWest DHI is used to control a low Somatic Cell Count, improve components and as a comparison tool to benchmark with other dairy farmers. Classifying their cows has been used to make informed breeding decisions. Both of these tools have been essential for optimizing herd improvement. Myrta Holsteins is currently milking approximately 65 cows on 75 kgs of quota with Holsteins milking about 35 kgs daily with a 3.8 per cent fat, 3.2 per cent protein and a BCA of 218-219-216. As compared to farming in Holland, Renze says they are used to more stringent rules because of limited amount of farmland available and higher milk components in the country. With heifers starting to be born under their own prefix, Renze notes that the Gencor mating reports have been very helpful in making breeding decisions. These reports have even more value when their classification results are included. The Van der Ploegs mentioned that when choosing sires, they look to improve feet and legs, udders, rib capacity along with higher components and longevity to continue to build on the success of their thriving dairy operation. Martin graduated in 2008 and Michael in 2009. Elizabeth has just completed her degree this spring and David is expected to graduate in 2013. Elizabeth has pursued a career in the agricultural industry and is employed with the Canadian Seed Trade Association. David plans to return home to the farm when he finishes school and is working alongside his brothers and dad this summer.

With Martin and Michael home on the farm, Arnold’s workload has become a little less hectic. Martin now looks after the dairy herd management, which includes breeding and working with fresh or sick cows. Michael’s responsibilities are the calves and dry cows as well as the machinery, general repair and maintenance. Arnold spends his mornings feeding the cows but his afternoons are often filled with business-related tasks. When David is home he helps wherever he is needed, but also typically takes over the feeding. Elaine is still heavily involved with the book work and farm financials.

While Arnold never expected that all four of his children would pursue careers in agriculture, he’s happy with the choices they’ve made. “I’m very pleased and encouraged that my children have followed in my footsteps and want to seek employment in the agricultural sector,” says Arnold.

Much has changed since Arnold took over the farm as a sole proprietor in 2007, but even more so since Martin and Michael began working on the farm full-time. Arnold says the extra hands have allowed him to take a step back. They also have more time to focus on fine-tuning the operation, which has increased milk production by at least two litres per cow.

The ideal cow for their farm is a mediumsized cow with strong feet and legs, a good udder and both high milk production and high butterfat. Their favourite cow in the barn is one that gave over 17,000 litres in her 305-day lactation. They continue to recognize the need for a strong reproductive program in a successful herd, and this is one area they have been focusing more on. “I’m proud of the improvements we’ve made in reproduction over the last three to five years,” says Martin. “We have 85 per cent of heifers calving before 24 months and we have a cow pregnancy rate of 19 per cent.” The reproductive program consists of 100 per cent artificial insemination and the use of visual heat detection. Recently, pedometers have been added to facilitate heat detection in the heifers and plans are in the works to expand usage to the whole herd. The Schoutens also use ov-synch if cows have not been inseminated and/or are open at 70 days in milk. Approximately 30 per cent of the herd is bred with young sires and the rest are proven sires. Martin says they work closely with their semen salesman to select bulls that have a history of high milk and butterfat production. The farm is exclusively Alta Genetics and they choose only a few bulls “to try to keep consistency in the overall herd.” The Schoutens also see the value in classifying their cattle.

“Classifying helps you distinguish the strengths and weaknesses of your cows allowing you to select the bulls that are best suited for your herd,” says Martin. So what’s next for the Schoutens? Construction of a new dairy barn began this spring. The barn will hold five double-stall Astrea robotic milkers from Insentec, a company based in the Netherlands, and house 500 stalls. There will also be pack areas for fresh and sick cows that have the capacity to hold an additional 60 animals. The continuously growing farm operation is one reason the Schoutens have been able to thrive in a constantly changing industry. While Arnold attributes their success to efficient rations and keeping feed costs low, his sons think there may be more to it than that. “The reason my dad has been so successful is because he always kept on the leading edge of technology and wasn’t afraid to make capital investments,” Martin says. “[The farm] was fairly vertically integrated which allowed our dad to keep dollars in the farm to invest in its future,” adds Michael. Certainly the Schoutens have always strived to be on the leading edge of technology. In 1995 when the current dairy barn was built, Arnold toured many farms before deciding what was right for his farm. With a double-18 parallel parlour, the barn had 400 stalls and the facility was only stocked at half capacity when the animals moved in. At the time, the facility had the latest in cow comfort and was considered a large barn for an Ontario dairy farmer, drawing crowds to the open house. Now, with construction of their new robotic dairy barn underway, the Schoutens are once again at the forefront of technology. They’ve toured many operations to determine how to best design the new barn and made visits to robotic milking facilities in Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, New York, Pennsylvania and the Netherlands. When all is said and done, their new facility will boast one of the largest robotic milking systems in the country. Even the way in which they deal with waste will be unique. The new barn will be built on a two per cent slope with a tube manure system installed underneath. The tubes run along the slope beneath the facility and manure is emptied into a reception pit at the end of the barn. At 480 feet long, there will be difference in elevation of 9.5 feet from one end of the barn to the other. Arnold’s sons have clearly learned a lot about sound business practices and how to be a successful farmer from their father. Although many would still consider Martin and Michael young farmers at only 25 and 23 years old respectively, they have their own advice to offer from watching their father succeed. “Don’t let your learning stop – read everything you can read and keep learning everything you can,” says Martin. “Don’t be afraid to visit other dairy farms and ask farmers about their mistakes and what they would do differently if they could do it again.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 71

FOR WRAY BRUBACHER, WEST-CENTRAL’S DAIRY YOUTH AWARD WINNER, hard work, commitment and good management are the keys to a successful dairy operation. Along with his wife, Brenda, Wray owns and operates Brookhaven Holsteins just outside of Drayton. With five young children, he never finds himself short of helpers. Sons, Tyler and Dawson, look after the calves and help feed and name the animals. Daughters, Tiana and Tierra, help in the house and enjoy taking care of their new baby brother, Dallas.

SINCE TAKING OVER HIS FAMILY FARM IN 2000, EASTCENTRAL ONTARIO DAIRY YOUTH AWARD WINNER COLLIN WALKER has implemented a series of modifications that have resulted in healthier, happier and higher-producing cows at Walkhavern Farms in Stayner, Ontario.

Looking ahead, Wray has big plans to make his operation run even smoother. He hopes to build a new tie-stall barn and house cows and heifers under one roof in order to cut down on labour and improve efficiency. A modern calf barn with maternity pens, big fans for ventilation and a feed room large enough to store hay and straw also make the short-list of his future farm improvements.

Two dominant foundation cow families, Zoe and Eve, have helped contribute to an impressive herd classification of 5 EX, 29 VG and 31 GP and an average composite BCA of 218. Cows are fed with a TMR mixer and those producing over 38 litres of milk per day are top dressed with additional feed. The family grows hay, wheat, corn and soybeans on 600 acres of owned property and 550 acres of rented land.

In just eight short years, Collin and his wife Tanya have increased production by 30 per cent, cow genetics with respect to GLPI and Conformation by 50 per cent, and doubled their land base. EASTERN ONTARIO DAIRY YOUTH AWARD WINNER, BRAD LOWRY, knows a thing or two about overcoming hardship. In the summer of 2010, a fire destroyed a machine shed on his family’s farm in Almonte, taking a large portion of equipment with it. A look-on-the-brightside Brad says that although the fire put on hold plans to renovate an existing heifer barn, the family was “extremely lucky” it wasn’t the dairy barn that was lost. Though the fire was a definite setback, Brad has continued to move forward with his eye on the prize of breeding excellent cattle and filling a quota of 64 kgs daily at Penlow Farms. To date, he’s been successful on both fronts. “I like to think we have a pretty good herd of cows,” he says modestly. With a herd classification of 11 EX, 28 VG, 16 GP and an average BCA of 230, Lowry has what many would refer to as more than just “pretty good.” Their current breeding program focuses on type, with approximately three-quarters of sires used coming from Semex. Along with his parents, Allan and Donna and the involvement of his 84-year-old grandfather, Bert, Brad milks 50 cows in his head-to-head barn and aims to keep the stalls occupied at all times in order to fill his quota. Heifers and dry crows graze on dry hay and a homemade ground grain made up of barley or corn, with protein and minerals added. A rotation of barley, wheat, corn and soybeans is grown on 500 acres; hay, pasture and swamp make up the remaining 250 acres of owned land.

Brad Lowry Penlow Farms, Almonte

Brad has implemented several changes since becoming involved in the operation of Penlow Farms several years ago. The biggest of those changes, he says, was in their heifer feeding program. Ten years ago, they moved from a haylage/corn silage ration to a free-choice round bale feeding program. Although Brad admits the new way is more labour-intensive, it helps develop the deep, capacious frames the family looks for in heifers. Three years ago, speared by the ongoing concern of Johne’s disease and other transmittable diseases, the Lowry’s started purchasing dry colostrum powder and feeding that to calves in replacement of the mother’s milk. Milk replacement is then fed until weaning. In addition to preventing diseases, the family has noticed a marked improvement in the overall health of their calves. Off the farm, Brad is the President of the Lanark Holstein club where he has been a director since 2005. He is a member of the North Lanark Agricultural Society (Almonte Fair), the Eastern Ontario Western Quebec Championship show committee, and the Chair of the Dairy Committee. In the past, he has been involved in Lanark Junior Farmers, and has completed over 25 4-H clubs focusing on dairy, dairy judging and showmanship. WHEN WESTERN ONTARIO DAIRY YOUTH AWARD WINNER CHANCY BURGESS first began breeding cows under his Chakelburg Holsteins prefix five years ago, he set his sights on maximizing efficiency and improving farm management. Burgess took over his father’s half of the award-winning A to Z herd in 2006 and hasn’t looked back since. With the A to Z herd having been awarded a Master Breeder shield in 2005, Burgess had a strong foundation on which to build. But like any ambitious young farmer, he admits he still set some “lofty” goals at the outset. Two of those goals, Burgess would soon discover, were both realistic and attainable: to make his herd the top-producing herd in the county within the first five years of management and to breed an excellent cow before the age of 30. In 2010, Burgess’s herd was first in Bruce County in terms of production with an impressive 10,932 kg of milk produced and a BCA of 236-249-239 (up 30-19-26 from three years prior). His second goal became a reality the same year when Chakelburg Sept Pizza went EX 90 in December 2010.

The Chakelburg herd is comprised of 140 Holsteins with a current classification of 9 EX, 36 VG, and 23 GP. Burgess says he breeds for type and components and keeps a close eye on bloodlines that cross well in order to incorporate them into his herd. He focuses on feet, legs, Chakelburg Holsteins, Mildmay and udders to work with the current classification system, but still values frame, capacity and width throughout. Along with his father, Robert, Burgess milks 55-60 cows on average in a tie-stall barn outside of Mildmay. A warm-style calf barn with a new naturally ventilated heifer barn was built in 2009 to house animals from three months old to breeding age. Burgess grows hay, corn and mixed grain on the 225 acres he owns, and purchases additional grains and supplements as needed. Looking ahead, he hopes to install a TMR feeding system to maximize forages, as well as a manure system to handle animal and milkhouse waste. Burgess is active in his local community and has volunteered as a 4-H leader in Mildmay for the past eight years. Before that, he was a member himself, participating in several leadership camps and representing Bruce County at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair on six different occasions. He has been a Gay-Lea delegate for the past three years and volunteers his time with the Mildmay Agricultural Society to help out with numerous events, including the annual Mildmay Fair. His four children, Dalainey (7), Addison (5), Kenadee (3) and Hudson (2) also keep him busy. THE ENERGY LEVEL WAS HIGH AND THE BLUE BOOTIES WERE OUT IN FULL FORCE AS 45 YOUNG DAIRY ENTHUSIASTS DESCENDED ON THE UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH FOR A 3-DAY WORKSHOP IN DAIRY MANAGEMENT. HELD FROM MAY 5 – 7, THE SECOND ANNUAL DAIRY SEN$E CONFERENCE DREW PARTICIPANTS AGES 17-25 FROM ACROSS THE PROVINCE. ONE THING THEY ALL HAD IN COMMON WAS THE DESIRE TO LEARN VALUABLE BUSINESS SKILLS TO HELP THEM MANAGE SUCCESSFUL DAIRY OPERATIONS IN THE FUTURE. 4-H Ontario’s Andrew Campbell was thrilled to see so much interest in this year’s Dairy Sens$e program. Campbell, who was hired in March to coordinate the delivery of the Suite Sen$e program, could not have been more pleased with the program’s achievements. “To be able to bring together young people from the dairy industry from Lambton County to Thunder Bay is incredible,” says Campbell. “I’m hoping the participants will take some great information home with them to their own operations and their own communities.” This year, the one-of-a-kind program accepted 45 participants, with approximately 20 remaining on the waitlist. The Dairy Sen$e program was originally developed and co-managed by the Ontario Holstein Branch and 4-H Ontario in 2010 in order to fill an education gap within the industry regarding business management. According to Branch General Manager, Jason French, Ontario has some of the best young dairy show people, fitters and judges, but when it comes to business know-how, and young farmers knowing what to expect when they come home to farm, there is always more to learn. “Dairy Sen$e provides an introduction to the business side of dairy farming,” French says. “Our program will help make young dairy farmers in the province more confident in their decisions on the farm as they become more involved in a management role in the future.” The conference kicked off with Kelly Daynard, Program Manager at the Ontario Farm Animal Council (OFAC), reminding the young dairy enthusiasts of just how important they are in terms of portraying a positive image of farming.

A lot of people don’t know, or don’t care, where their food comes from, Daynard says. Her solution to that is simple: “Get out there and tell people what you do!” “People think [dairy] farmers are extremely credible,” Daynard says. “Twitter, Facebook and blogs can all be used to your advantage.” Ben Loewith, of Summitholme Holsteins, spoke on the importance of achieving a high pregnancy rate within your herd. He says that increasing your herd’s pregnancy rate from the provincial average to a goal of 20 per cent can put a lot of money back into an operation. He also stresses that visual heat detection alone rarely works, and that having a plan of attack for each individual cow is key. “One hundred per cent of cows that are not detected in heat will not get pregnant,” Loewith says. Small groups spent the rest of the day moving through a series of speakers, taking notes, asking questions, and sharing personal experiences of problems encountered on their own farms. For some, the experience proved almost cathartic, letting them know that many of the challenges they face on their home farm are the very same problems others face as well. One presentation, delivered by Robert Larmer, dealt with a prospect many in attendance are facing: working off the farm first. Larmer currently works at Pioneer Seeds, but hopes to take over the home farm in the future. He says the experience of working off the farm has been good for him as it has allowed him to learn how to manage finances on a small scale and develop his people skills at the same

He also touched on the importance of succession planning. “Do it now!” he stressed, noting that more often than not, families tend to put off the conversation. “Not 10 years from now.” Over the course of the afternoon, participants learned about the importance of keeping detailed records on the farm and how various programs, such as DHI’s Profit Profiler, can help them identify areas for potential cost savings. They also brushed up on their financial terminology and learned about the various loans available to young farmers. Day two brought more of a “hands-on” education as participants donned their blue booties and toured two area farms. Beslea Farms Ltd., bordering the picturesque town of Shelburne, was the first stop. Hosts, Chris and Brianne Brown, shared in-depth knowledge and candid information about their operation. No questions were “off-limits,” and the experience was eye-opening for many participants, who up to that point, had little appreciation for what it might be like to owe the bank a significant amount of money, or to overcome adversity and make the best of an adverse situation.

Opsterlawn Holsteins outside of Drayton was the second and final stop of the day. Participants were in awe as they toured the Bijlsma’s large, well-managed free-stall facility, housing 600 head. According to brothers Andy and Martin, the unique setup is similar to those you would find in The Netherlands, where they grew up. In order to expand the operation, the family moved to Canada in 1999 and has worked hard to constantly develop the commercial herd ever since. Participants gained valuable insight into Holstein Canada’s Classification Program from guest speaker, Dr. Bethany Muir, as well as information on Johne’s Disease from OMAFRA’s Dr. Ann Godkin. The 2011 National Holstein Convention was held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, from May 12th to 16th. This years Ontario delegates for the Young Adult Program of the Convention were Janelle Kellogg of Welovale Holsteins in Port Hope, Jamie McNinch of Bonniespring Holsteins in Millbrook and myself, Kylene Kidd-Williams of Kedeb Holsteins in Peterborough. The Convention was based out of the Westin Nova Scotian hotel, which is where we convened on Thursday afternoon for our first meet and greet with 25 other delegates from across Canada. We then watched a video on parliamentary procedure and discussed the applications of genomics on our farms.

Michael reminds young farmers to “always keep your mind open to new ideas and never think there is only one way of doing things.”

Though participants had been on the road since early that morning, their day wasn’t yet complete. After dinner, they heard from Glenn Barkey of Altona Lea Holsteins. Barkey spoke about his experience on various committees in the dairy industry and encouraged participants to become involved. He also discussed succession planning and offered a first-hand account of his experience jointly taking over the family farm with his wife, Karen, his sister, brother-in-law and mother.

Frank Barkey

At Lakeridge Health Oshawa on Thursday, April 7, 2011, after a courageous battle with T-cell lymphoma cancer at 74 years of age. Beloved husband and friend of Donna (nee Johnson) for 46 years. Dearest father of Sharyn and her husband Tim Sargent, Elaine and her husband Mark Cole, Glenn and his wife Karen Barkey, Eric and his wife Christine Barkey, Carolyn and her husband Frazer Puterbough, Kathryn and her husband Clair Doan. Lowving grandfather of Stephynie, Bruce, Daniel, Melyssa, Benjamin Sargent, Matthew and Ryan Cole, Cameron, Grant, Ian, Reid Barkey, Jacob, Evan, Julia Barkey, Cooper and Callum Puterbough and Carmyn Doan. Frank served as President of the Ontario Holstein Branch in 1988 and was awarded the Master Breeder Shield three times for his Altona Lea herd. Frank was a great mentor for many in the dairy industry as he gave his time towards youth and industy committees. Donations to the Ontario Dairy Youth Trust Fund, Durham East 4-H or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
