Getting Around

Pattaya is a very easy city to get around although the busy traffic causes frequent hold-ups at peak times (07:00 – 09:00 and 15:00 –18:30), particularly on the major roads. Unusually, for Thailand, there are no tuk-tuks in Pattaya, so everyone usually gets around on the baht-buses (songtaews) or on motorbike taxis. There are literally hundreds of both all over Pattaya.

Motorbike taxis Motorbike taxis are a way of life in Pattaya. They are your best bet of getting around if you want to get somewhere quickly or conveniently, particularly at busy times. On every corner in Pattaya, no matter how small the Soi (street), you will find a gathering of motorbike taxis. They are operate 24 hours a day 7 days per week and provide a very convenient service. However, this option is not for the faint-hearted and can be dangerous. These guys, and the occasional lady will take you anywhere but agree on a price first!

Renting cars and motorbikes Another practical way to get around Pattaya is by renting a motorbike. Most people simply don’t have the nerve to tackle the traffic and bizarre driving habits here, but if you do, renting a motorbike is your best option for getting around Pattaya. You can rent a motorbike for around 200 baht a day or cheaper for longer periods. There are scooter type bikes which are actually extremely easy to ride, with no clutch when changing gears, and very reliable. Larger motorbikes are freely available as well, but obviously more expensive.

10

In Thailand it is illegal to ride a motorbike or to be a passenger without a helmet, to ride with more than two passengers, to undertake in traffic, to go the wrong way down one-way streets, to exceed the speed limit, or, to jump red lights, which means very little to anyone in Thailand and driving habits here are dreadful. If you decide to rent a motorbike, make sure your medical insurance is up-to-date as accidents here are a daily occurrence.

Cars can be hired too, but driving them in and around the city is likely to be a frustrating experience, particularly at school times, market days, rush hours and on Sukhumvit Road. There are many car rental companies around the city with prices starting at around 500 baht a day for the older cars, to a more realistic 1200+ baht for more modern or four wheel drive vehicles.

WARNING... Driving habits in Thailand are shocking and most drivers are quite irresponsible and ignore simple safety rules. In contrast to the Thai’s usual polite and non-confrontational behaviour, they become quite inconsiderate behind the wheel. Be very wary of your speed and always look out for bad drivers, Pattaya is full of them. Unlike many Western countries, it’s very easy to pass a driving test here, so many drivers have little or no experience of driving either in town or on main roads. Many simply don’t have a licence at all or any awareness of road rules. Be prepared at any time for other drivers to suddenly pull out in front of you without even looking, stop without warning, overtake dangerously (and on the inside) and ignore motorcyclists. Some people just stop and park where it suits them, weave through the traffic with a death wish, ride the wrong way up the road into oncoming traffic and more. Do pay careful attention and drive conservatively. Accidents are regular in Pattaya and when they do occur, the offender is usually reluctant to accept any responsibility. Should the worst happen however, the Pattaya police and ambulance services are exceptionally good, as well as being very quick to the scene.

The seafood emporium was opened in March 2007 by Australian restaurateur Mr. Daniel King. We went down to take a look... Decorated in turquoise, the restaurant has a big glass front to allow as much natural light to come in as possible. Inside is all chrome & stainless steel, it has orange tablecloths with white throw-overs and a large refrigerated delicatessen cabinet dividing the entrance from the kitchen. The restaurant is fully air conditioned, and is very clean. Full take away service and free home delivery or you can dine-in ordering from the menu. The menu has all the seafood you can imagine, plus traditional soups, starters, steaks, pizza, pasta and desserts. Some seafood choices are listed below:Lemon Soy Scollops Lobster Bisque and Clam Chowder Mediterranean Sea Bass Fillets Cajan Salmon Cutlets Morrocan Spiced Yoghurt Snapper Lobster Mornay And of course‌ Traditional Beer Batter Fish and Chips The wine list has many labels both white and red covering French, Australian, Chilean and Spanish. For the health conscious among you, there is an excellent Booster Juice Bar which provides a range of energy Shakes and Smoothies. Overall it is a clean, well managed, very inexpensive and highly recommended restaurant

Cupid's arrows will soon be flying, because February 14th, Valentine’s Day, is the time when romance is all around. By long established custom, it's the day when friends, spouses, lovers, and intended lovers around the world typically proclaim their affection with cards, gifts, and of course flowers! But have you ever wondered about St Valentine’s history? Who was this mysterious figure whose name has come to be so closely associated with affairs of the heart? The legends surrounding St Valentine’s history vary, but the most popular and probably most credible story identifies St Valentine as a third century Roman priest. At the time, Emperor Claudius II was having trouble recruiting young men for his army. The emperor outlawed marriage, believing that young men would be more willing to join the army if they did not have wives and families waiting for them at home. Valentine (or Valentinus, as he would have been known in Rome) defied the emperor and continued to marry young lovers in secret. When his actions were discovered, he was jailed and sentenced to death. Other stories suggest that Valentine was executed for attempting to help Christians escape from the harsh tortures of the Roman prisons. As history tells it, Valentine became friendly with the young daughter of his jailer, and on the eve of his execution, he left her a tender note which he had signed "from your Valentine". Thus, he became a heroic, sympathetic, and romantic figure, who may well have "sent" the very first valentine greeting himself. Although it is not a traditional Thai holiday, Valentine's day is celebrated all around the country anyway on the 14th. We take this opportunity to suggest some ideas of what you might do on the day:

36

10 Things to do on Valentine’s Day... from a guys perspective

1. Reenact your first date One of the most romantic things you can do is get nostalgic with your girlfriend. Women go crazy for guys who remember the details of the past, such as the restaurant you went to on your first date, what you ate and what you did afterward. It will be like celebrating your anniversary and you can combine gifts with cards that mention how happy you are that you met her. 2. Partake in a physical activity No, not that kind of physical activity; I mean something that will get your heartbeat going, like jet skiing or going for a walk along the beach and bringing wine to drink on the way. Such activities are perfect to boost an old and predictable relationship. 3. Go for the massage No, not that kind of massage. Either you give her a full-body massage or better yet, reserve a double massage for him and her. You should both take some time off and enjoy some relaxation together. It is lover's day after all, not just girlfriend's day. 4. Make a path of rose petals Girls flip over temptation, flirting and teasing, so buy a lot of rose petals and leave a trail from the entrance of your house or condo to your bedroom. Leave her a little gift on the bed and she'll feel like it's a romantic treasure hunt, and hopefully the rewards will be spectacular. 5. Rent a hotel room & pretend you're tourists

There is something exciting about not having to clean up the bedroom afterward, so rent a hotel room, grab some bubbly, and use all your senses as you pretend to be out-of-town tourists on a love journey, somewhere like the Sugar Hut would be perfect for this.

6. Have sex in public Although this may not be for everybody, some couples will get a thrill of a lifetime if they perform the act on risky grounds. It definitely serves as a bonding period and is sure to serve as a great inside joke between the two of you for years to come.

37

7. Don't forget to do your homework

Nothing spices up a mundane relationship as much as staying at home, renting an erotic movie and "getting to know one another" better all over again. This is obviously not suitable for a first date if you catch my drift, but perfect for couples who have been together for some time.

8. Get away If your work, time and budget allow it, plan a two or three-day vacation getaway, specifically at a beach or spa resort. This is guaranteed wild action, and may even take place outdoors. 9. Dress up Dress up as if you are going to the opera, and go to a restaurant or just have dinner at home. Girls love an excuse to get all dolled up and the fact that you'll be getting dressed up will make anything you decide to do seem like a special occasion. This will be telling her you think she is special, and she'll love it. Some recommendations include... Manhattans Steakhouse Symphony Casa Pascal Amor Sugar Hut Moon River Pub

Tel:- 038 259 790 Tel:- 038 420 939 Tel:- 038 723 660 Tel:- 038 710 680 Tel:- 038 364 186 Tel:- 038 370 614

10. Pop the question If you think that the time is right and you have that look in your eyes... if you are sick of the single life, and if you are... well, when the I's are dotted and the T's are crossed, then maybe, just maybe, there is no better time to propose to her.

38

Hopefully this article gave you some fresh ideas for what to do with your girlfriend on Valentine's Day. You can combine some of them to make it an all-day event and you can modify as you see fit. Remember: Use the special occasion to make her feel special and she'll be on cloud nine. Have fun and happy Valentine's Day.

Koh Chang Island The island of Koh Chang is a tropical marine national park. It consists of over 70% rainforest and is the best preserved tourist holiday destination in Thailand. Situated 4 hours from Pattaya, it's Thailand's second largest island after Phuket. Recently, with the surge of development and popularity, it has been elevated to Thailand's new tourist haven. Koh Chang has everything, white sandy coves and beaches, pristine rain forests and abundance of wildlife and marine life, high mountain peaks, several scenic waterfalls, a rich variety of cuisine and great nightlife. Accommodation on the island ranges from simple beach huts and bungalows to luxury villas and apartments. If you drive, you can hire motorbikes, jeeps and cars to take you to any of the beaches along the coastal roads and, in the evening, there are plenty of restaurants, live music bars and nightclubs to choose from to spice up your stay. The Pattaya Guide recommends:

Accommodation

Paddys Palms Resort, 32 room resort with hot water, air con, TV and fridge. The resort itself has a large swimming pool, excellent parking and is located 5 mins from Whites Sands Beach. 1000 -1500 baht Palm Garden Hotel, a small 12 room hotel with hot water, air con, TV and fridge. The rooms are basic but located 200 yards from the beach in the heart of the main tourist spot, White Sands Beach.

Restaurants

15 Palms, a beach side restaurant on White Sands Beach serves European food with everything from pizzas, salads, pasta, burgers and of course Thai food.

44

Paddy’s Palms, Koh Chang’s first Irish Pub is a clean, well managed pub with a great atmosphere in the evening. They have a pool table, wireless internet, live sport on big screens, great Italian coffee, traditional Irish dishes, Kilkenny and Guinness on tap. The restaurant is the most popular on the Island and must be visited.

Outside Pattaya Once again the nice people at the Pattaya Guide have allowed me to rattle on about the areas outside Pattaya. First time and many other visitors regard east of Sukhumvit highway as the hinterland and occasionally even jungle. Folks it isn’t. In the area of Mabprachan reservoir there are many things to do and see, and many places to dine and enjoy a drink. Along Siam Country Club road we have the recently upgraded Siam Country Club golf course now considered to be world class and it recently hosted a LPGA tournament. I gather the old courses is in excellent condition and very playable. The clubhouse and facilities have also been upgraded and offer the golfer everything he needs. We have the Horseshoe Point Resort and Country Club offering a full range of equestrian events, off road cycling and quad bikes amongst many other family oriented activities. We attended the finals of the Thai Open Polo a week or so ago and what an exciting day it was too. There is a host of restaurants and family style pubs offering great food, great conversations and at very sensible prices. For us Brits we have a number of places to enjoy a traditional Sunday roast. Mulligans the new Irish pub, the Fishermans Rest and Peacock Place immediately come to mind. For everyday meals, snacks and a drink there is the Moonraker’s Travern, close to route 36. Khun John’s seafood restaurant overlooking the water. Sams Bar, The Terrace, The Inn on the lake, Scotts Corner Bar, The Manneke Pis, The Steak House and of course the Rainbow next to the drivng range. All good value and very family friendly. The Moonraker Tavern also has function rooms, rooms for rent and secure storage facilities. The Peacock Place also offers accommodation and has ice cold draft Heineken at 180 baht for a jug.....now that is value! A new kid on the block is Chonlada’s Coffee House along the main road, we had breakfast there last week and it was suberb. One must not forget the Deli Bean at the front of Laurel Park close to the Horseshoe Point. This is a must visit place especially if you like quiche and well filled (stuffed) sandwiches. On the reservoir itself one can fish, sail and club next to the water. So yes, we do live the good life out here and as I said once before Siam Country Club road is now being called the “Driving Street” of Pattaya as there is so much activity going on. Try us, we don’t bite

48

Accessibility. I have mentioned this word previously however it is worth expanding upon. Since the opening of the new airport and the vast improvements made to our infrastructure the journey time from the airport to Pattaya has been greatly reduced. Nowadays after passing through the arrivals section one can be in Pattaya within an hour, excluding peak traffic times of course. The roads are smooth and well lit with the first part of the journey being on an elevated motorway. The remainder is also motorway or motorway standard roads allowing you to be at your hotel, condo or house quickly and safely. This great Accessibility of obviously adds to the appeal of Pattaya as a destination resort whether it be for your holiday, a business trip or a visit to the city to explore investment opportunities Accessibility = investment opportunities. Land and therefore property prices in Pattaya have increased dramatically over the last past few years. This trend will continue for the foreseeable future more and more people arrive. There are a great number of business and investment opportunity here especially in the property market. Buy to let is a popular way to invest and a great number of people are seeing a good return on their property investments. An ROI in excess of 7% is the norm, and in some case as much as 10 or even12% is being achieved. An important and fast growing market is the expat contractor and his family, here on posting of 1-4 years. We have more then 8 of the largest European, Japanese and American car manufacturers and ancillary parts based here, we have telecom companies, steel rolling miles, food manufacturers and exporters, TV and electrical appliance manufacturers and recently the largest kitchen appliance company, in the pacific region will be opening a plant here. The point is these companies bring in key management and staff and their require quality, secure homes for their families. The primary location for these families is in the area Siam Country Club and the Mabprachan Reservoir. This is due to the proximity of the industrial centres and 3 best international schools in Thailand. There is world-class golf on the doorstep and European quality hospitals and shopping just a few minutes drive away. These factors make the area by far the most popular ex-pat family destination. So, for a sound investment the buy to let route is an excellent path to follow, as not only will you enjoy a good rental return but also your property will increase in real terms at the same time. KCR Homefinder Co Ltd is based on Siam Country Club road

49

KCR Homefinder Feature Home. It is with real pleasure I am able to show case one of our most distinguished local builders and the homes he produces. This gentlemen has built homes in the UK, Europe, the US, and for the past 10 years here in Pattaya. His build qua;ity is second to none and he does not skimp on materials or workmanship. He in fact was the first builder in Pattaya using properly ground earthed electrics, EEC standard plumbing and sanitation, full foam roof insulation and double thickness walls, one could say that he set the standard of quality homes. His team of qualified artisans have been with him from the beginning and it’s interesting that his second generation builders are from within the families of the original teams. A credit to himself and his in house skills training system. He offers a varied choice of homes based on an Andalusian theme with many interesting features incorporated into them. There is a choice of 2, 3 and 4 bedroom bungalows, two story houses and recently some rather special 2 storey town houses. As well as the build specification mentioned above every home comes with a fully fitted, high quality European kitchen complete with appliances and granite counter tops, every room is air conditioned and the bedrooms have built in wardrobes and vanity units. The bath shower rooms are delightful having grade A ceramic tiling floor to ceiling to keep them cool and of course easy to clean, and the master bathroom always have his n hers wash basins and a corner unit Jacuzzi spa for relaxing. The living rooms and bedrooms are pre wired for cable and satellite TV, and each home is alarmed however, within 24 hour manned security it is hardly necessary. Outside there are covered patios, private swimming pools, well stocked tropical gardens and secure covered car parking. We have been working wih Duncan for almost 9 years and we can say hand on heart these are excellent quality homes at very reasonable prices. Golf Review Pattaya's best kept secret is undoubtedly the quality and value of its Golf Courses, there are 20 championship standard courses within 45 minutes of Pattaya, designed by the very best golf architects and designers. Clubhouse facilities are excellent with everything you might need and more, including swimming pools, massage facilities, great restaurants and superb shower and locker rooms. Quite simply, golfing in Pattaya is a match for anywhere in the world at a fraction of the cost with each course offering a fantastic experience for golfers of all abilities (with no course requiring a handicap card). So, whether you are a low handicap golfer, one who enjoys a challenge or a complete novice there is no better place to play than the courses around Pattaya.

Course of the Month St Andrews 2000 Course: 18 Holes 7,777 yards Par 74 A visually stunning and sweeping layout that ranks among the best courses in Thailand offers golfers a unique chance to play St.Andrews 2 signature Par 6’s that weigh in at 855 and 857 yards respectively. Every hole demands a new challenge to golfers and careful course management is a must to come out a winner here. Certainly not a course for the high handicapper. Golf Carts Compulsory
