RESTAURANT REVIEW
Jameson’s opened way back in 2004 and is probably the oldest Irish pub in Pattaya, we take a look at what’s new. On entry, you are greeted by friendly and well-presented staff in uniform, they’ll come to your table ready to take your drinks order while you peruse the menu. The interior is warm and rustic, with traditional pub-style wooden tables and chairs, it feels like you could have stepped into an old-fashioned pub in the English countryside but you’re actually in the middle of Central Pattaya. The menu offers a variety of starters and snacks, soups and salads along with main courses, there’s also a nice choice of Thai dishes and desserts available. Not forgetting the wide range of drinks in the fully stocked long bar that include a variety of draught beers, Guinness of course, along with popular lagers like Tiger and Heineken. They have local bottled beers, imported bottled beers and ciders, and a range of specialty coffees that include the famous Irish coffee with Jameson’s whiskey, also Mexican, and Roman coffee too, you simply must try. A recent major change to the pub was the downsizing of the overall interior space, and the new pub layout is much better than before, offering a cosy warm feel and ambience. The library area to the right of the entrance features classic Chesterfield armchairs, and there’s the big screen area with a large projector ideal for live sports such as F1, cricket, rugby and football. Outside the pub is a furnished terrace area, ideal for watching the world go by with a drink or two. You can also sit at the spacious bar if the table areas are full, which tend to happen at the weekend especially when live sport is shown. The daily happy hour runs from 11am to 7pm and from 11pm to 1am. It’s also busy for the popular all-you-can-eat Sunday carvery that’s served from midday until 11pm. Jameson’s is a lovely traditional pub with a friendly atmosphere is easily found on Soi AR next to Nova Park. If it’s your first time to Pattaya or you’re a regular visitor, take the time to visit and enjoy this wonderful pub experience. 4 Restaurant Review

THAI COOKING GUIDE
Thai This month’s recipe is the popular Fried Rice with Shrimp that’s easy to cook even for the culinary challenged. SERVING SUGGESTION Serving for one person
Preparation Time: 25 minutes
INGREDIENTS: 1.5 cups Thai jasmine rice
6 green onions (spring onions)
5-6 large prawns, cut in half length-wise
2 tbsp fresh chopped coriander
2 eggs
1 tbsp sugar
1 medium/small onion
3 tbsp light soy sauce
3 medium cucumbers
2 tbsp tomato ketchup or Thai ketchup
2 fresh limes
1/4 cup cooking oil
1 fresh Thai chilli pepper
METHOD Steam the jasmine rice in a rice cooker, using about 2 cups water. Slice onion into rings of approximately 1/4” thickness. Fry onion in oil until they start to turn golden brown. Add the prawns, ketchup, sugar and soy sauce, and stir together. Add the steamed rice and continue to stir-fry. Remove from pan. Fry eggs in 1 tbsp oil, turning and breaking regularly. When done, mix in the rice, and season to taste, we suggest sprinkling it with Thai pepper powder. Cut cucumbers into 1/4” slices, and slice the red chili lengthwise. Spoon the stir-fried rice onto plates, and garnish with coriander and chili. Serve cucumber slices, spring onions and lime wedges on the side of plate. 12 Thai Cooking Guide

COVER FEATURE
Many cherished Easter traditions have been around for centuries, but you won’t find any in Pattaya or in the Bible. With less than 1% of the Thai population being Christian it’s no surprise to find out that Easter isn’t widely celebrated in Thailand, so here’s a brief history lesson. The most prominent secular symbol of the Christian holiday, the Easter bunny reportedly was introduced to America by the German immigrants who brought over their stories of an egg-laying hare. The decoration of eggs is believed to date back to at least the 13th century, while the rite of the Easter parade has even older roots. Other traditions, such as the consumption of Easter candy, are among the modern additions to the celebration of this early springtime holiday. EASTER BUNNY The Bible makes no mention of a long-eared, short-tailed creature who delivers decorated eggs to well-behaved children on Easter Sunday; nevertheless, the Easter bunny has become a prominent symbol of Christianity’s most important holiday. The exact origins of this mythical mammal are unclear, but rabbits, known to be prolific procreators, are an ancient symbol of fertility and new life. According to some sources, the Easter bunny first arrived in America in the 1700’s with German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania and transported their tradition of an egg-laying hare called ‘Osterhase’. Their children made nests in which this creature could lay its colored eggs. Eventually, the custom spread across America and the fabled rabbit’s Easter morning deliveries expanded to include chocolate and other types of candy and gifts, while decorated baskets replaced nests. Additionally, children often left out carrots for the bunny in case he got hungry from all his hopping. The largest Easter egg ever made was over 8m high and weighed over 3,600kg (3.6 tonnes). It was built out of choclate and marshmallow and supported by an internal steel frame. Willy Wonka sure would be proud of this engineering feat. 14 Cover Feature

EASTER EGGS Easter is a religious holiday, but some of its customs, such as Easter eggs, are likely linked to pagan traditions. The egg, an ancient symbol of new life, has been associated with pagan festivals celebrating spring. From a Christian perspective, Easter eggs are said to represent Jesus’ emergence from the tomb and resurrection. Decorating eggs for Easter is a tradition that dates back to at least the 13th century, according to some sources. One explanation for this custom is that eggs were formerly a forbidden food during Lent, so people would paint and decorate them to mark the end of the period of penance and fasting, then eat them on Easter as a celebration. Easter egg hunts and egg rolling are two popular egg-related traditions. In America, the White House Easter Egg Roll, a race in which children push decorated, hard-boiled eggs across the White House lawn, is an annual event held the Monday after Easter. The first official White House egg roll occurred in 1878, when Rutherford B. Hayes was president. EASTER CANDY Easter is the second best-selling candy holiday in America, after Halloween. Among the most popular sweet treats associated with this day are chocolate eggs, which date back to early 19th century Europe. Eggs have long been associated with Easter as a symbol of new life and Jesus’ resurrection. Another egg-shaped candy, the jelly bean, became associated with Easter in the 1930s (although the jelly bean’s origins reportedly date all the way back to a Biblical-era concoction called a Turkish Delight). According to the National Confectioners Association, over 16 billion jelly beans are made in America each year for Easter, enough to fill a giant egg measuring 27m high and 18m wide. While Easter is not celebrated in Thailand, you’ll be able to find chocolate eggs at several expat supmarkets in and around Pattaya. Villa Market, Foodland, along with Siamburi’s and Siam Expat foods, are most likely to have some stock. visit our website | www.pattaya.guide

Food in these establishments is often very well priced, excellent quality and large portions. If you don’t fancy the local Thai food then the pubs and bars are for you.
