RESTAURANT REVIEW
The Sportsman is located on Soi 13, Pattaya Beach Road and is a popular and well established British style pub since 1997. Regarded as one of the best expats pubs in Pattaya, you will be welcomed by the friendly team as soon as you walk through the door. The staff along with the bar itself are immaculately presented and the professionalism is one of the things that makes the place stand out from many of their rivals. If you are looking for a cold beer, you won’t be disappointed by the excellent selection that is available and you can sit at the bar or move to one of the tables. The prices are what would be classed as mid-range although offers are available. However, price is not the main reason for wanting to visit this venue. The Sportsman has a pleasant atmosphere and everyone is made to feel welcome without anything being too over the top. The food menu is excellent with plenty of choice with both Thai and European dishes available. The waitresses are supremely professional when taking your order and all food comes at the same time which might sound like a small thing, but makes all the difference. The food is well priced and the portions are large, meaning that no one will be leaving with an empty stomach. As the place opens at 7am it is ideal for early birds such as myself who are looking for a full English breakfast. The sausages were just like you get ‘back home’ and a decent slice of black pudding is always welcome. The Sunday carvery also represents great value and is as good as anywhere in the city. The fact that you can get as much, or as little veg, as you want just adds to the appeal. There is plenty of entertainment throughout the week including a quiz and the popular Samsung giveaway. All in all, a great English style boozer that is well worth a visit. Visit www.sportsmanpub.com or fb.com/TheSportsmanPattaya 10 Restaurant Review

EXPAT GROCERIES
Now more than ever, Pattaya has a fantastic range of expat groceries from chocolates to cheese and so much more. When the Pattaya Guide started way back in 2004 the options when it came to buying expat groceries and the items that we are more familiar with, was somewhat limited. We all used to be waiting for friends and family to be coming from ‘home’ armed with suitcases full of tinned salmon, Branston Pickle and the chocolates that we all know and love. Thankfully, that has all changed massively in the last few years with lots of shops around the city stocking a wide variety of expat groceries. In fact, we are lucky that with the advent of the internet we no longer have to leave our homes to find these products, simple searches online usually provide the answers that you need and many offer delivery direct to your door. There will be many people in and around the city who would crave English sausages and bacon only to have to make do with the local substitutes which fall some way short of the mark. Luckily, bacon, sausage and even black pudding have once again formed part of the diet of many British expats thanks to the ease and convenience that these products can now be purchased. It isn’t just the foods from the UK that now fill our stores, you only have to look around and see many products from across Europe, North America and Australia. In fact, every nationality is now well catered for when it comes to all foodstuff and groceries that they would expect to find in any supermarket back in their home. The options are plentiful and you certainly won’t be left craving for tinned products, raw meats and those sweets that we fancy once in a while! 12 Expat Groceries

The traditional Christmas dinner is almost as festive as Santa Claus himself and is an essential part of xmas celebrations. Depending on where you are from in the world, the festive feast is usually eaten on either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day and is usually a filling three course meal that often takes days to prepare. Such a meal forms the main part of Christmas festivities and is a celebration of the birth of Jesus within the Christian faith rather than just a fancy meal, somewhat forgotten here in Pattaya. A typical English Christmas day feast is often a three course meal that begins with a starter, such as pumpkin soup, prawn cocktail or pâté with toast. The main course nearly always features a huge turkey although goose is becoming quite popular, additional meats would be honey baked ham, pork with crackling, and roast sirloin of beef. Sides dishes would include a variety of roasted vegetables such as potatoes, parsnip, carrots, along with Brussels sprouts, cauliflower cheese, broccoli, mashed potato, sage & onion stuffing. Not forgetting gravy and sauces such as cranberry and horseradish. Desserts such as Christmas cake, pudding and mince pies, are often prepared with alcohol months in advance. For children, apple pie & custard, chocolate cake and yule log are always a popular compared to the adult sweets. And if there is room in anyone’s belly after all of that, then cheese and biscuits would follow, after eight mints and the traditional quality Street or Roses selection. Here in Pattaya, you can enjoy a traditional Christmas dinner at many restaurants across the city. However it’s very different from the traditional feel and atmosphere back in northern Europe or America, where the cold of winter brings heavy snow and families are huddled up in the warmth of a wood fire, or in most cases, central heating. Here in Pattaya, it feels strange with the temperature in the mid 30°C and everyone is wearing shorts and tee-shirts. 14 Cover Feature

The choice of where you can eat in Pattaya on Christmas Day is far from limited. Naturally, you may want to eat close to your home and if that is the case there are a wide array of options across the city. In East Pattaya, you have The Loft Resort which is perfect for families along with the Retox Outback Bar that meets everyone’s culinary wish. In Central Pattaya, you have the usual favourites of the Robin’s Nest, Jameson’s, The Sportsman and I-Rover with Linda’s and Hemingway’s being ideal if you are in Jomtien. Many of these restaurants will also serve some of the of the foods that we might associate with Boxing Day such as turkey sandwiches or maybe even a turkey curry. Whilst these may have been things that we dreaded back in the West, they can be a welcome change or maybe something that helps anyone who might be feeling a little homesick. Although your Christmas may be anything from the ‘norm’, you can be certain that you will be able to get many of the things that you associate with home. Of course, for many people, Christmas is all about being at home with loved ones. The fact that you are in Thailand certainly doesn’t mean you can’t have a home cooked Christmas feast. It’s just a lot of work preparing the food at home, and without air-con in the kitchen, a very hot task indeed. If you are going to cook at home, you can get all your products from expat shops such as Siam Expat Foods and Siamburi’s, large turkey’s are available from Prime Foods and other major supermarkets. If you haven’t made any plans or you don’t feel like venturing out after perhaps after a heavy Christmas Eve out on the town, you can always order your favourite food in from Door 2 Door. This is a great option if you are or aren’t feeling in the festive mood with regular menus available from some of Pattaya’s top restaurants. Of course, nearly all the bars in Pattaya will be open as normal so you will be able to catch up with your friends much like any other evening. visit our website | www.pattaya.guide

An inside interview into Pattaya’s Eating Out industry Kai Pairoj, chef from i-rovers gives their answers to our questions on what it’s like to run a restaurant in a competitive place like Pattaya Q When did you start work at i-rovers? A I came to i-rovers last year, in fact I’ll be celebrating one year in August. Q Tell us about yourself? A I’m originally from Ayutthaya and came down ‘south’ about five years ago. I originally started out in Hua Hin, but gained all my necessary hands-on training here, in the kitchen of the Dusit Thani hotel. Q Best day of the week? A It has to be Fridays. That’s the day that sport really kicks off for the weekend, and we sell a lot of fish & chips, as well as burgers, they’re always popular. Q Biggest spenders? A Probably the British and the Aussies, closely followed by the Americans. Q Your favourite dish? A ‘Twet Tiao’, a 40 baht noodle dish. From the menu, it’s chicken parmigiana. Q Most popular items? A Chicken Parmigiana outsells everything from one side, and then Thai dishes: pad Thai, massaman and chicken with cashew nuts, are all very popular. Q Biggest challenges? A I would love air-con in the kitchen as it’s so hot cooking so many meals! Q Best part of the day? A Cooking plenty of meals for hungry customers, that makes it all worthwhile and seeing my boss happy as food is constantly coming out of the kitchen! Q Sum up your restaurant in 3 words A Sports, service & quality 16 Under the hood

Most pubs will have all the live sports you could hope for and unlike many parts of the world there is no limit to the amount of sport displayed at any one time so expect to find lots of TV’s when you enter. Food in these establishments is often very well priced, excellent quality and large portions. If you don’t fancy the local Thai food then the pubs and bars are for you. It doesn’t matter what nationality you are, the pubs of Pattaya are welcoming places and everyone will be made to feel welcome regardless of it is their first visit or their hundredth.
