RESTAURANT REVIEW

Hotel Danmark is a quaint hotel that has an excellent restaurant which serves quality Danish food along with a selection of Thai dishes to make a great dining experience. Located on Soi Whitehouse just off Jomtien Beach Road, Hotel Danmark is perhaps best known for its excellent buffet breakfast which is always very popular and represents great value for money. Indeed, this is one of the things that I opted for when I visited in the past and I can say that I left feeling full. With an extensive a la carte menu, many diners take their time during evening service which is extremely popular, not surprising as the quality of food is very good. The fact that it offers Danish food is also something that you don’t find everywhere so this is a very welcome change if you feel like trying something just that little bit different. They also have a very good selection of drinks which are again very reasonably priced and definitely compliment the food. The décor is simple and appealing which helps to create a relaxed ambience. It has a very open and airy feel that is very nice when you can feel a gentle breeze blowing on you whilst you eat. In many ways, the appearance is more Mediterranean than Scandinavian. There are plenty of places to sit but it gets busy every evening, a good sign that it’s popular with locals and tourists alike. The staff are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable without being overly intrusive. The food is served at the same time rather than one person having to wait a long time for their meal – something that can be a problem in Thailand. The staff do all they can to make the whole experience more enjoyable so you can’t offer any greater compliment than that. The only very minor problem is that there isn’t as much parking available as what may be needed. However, that would be looking for faults as all in all, this is a great place to eat and the atmosphere is excellent. Highly recommended. 8 Restaurant Review

EXPAT GROCERIES

Now more than ever, Pattaya has a fantastic range of expat groceries from chocolates to cheese and so much more. When the Pattaya Guide started way back in 2004 the options when it came to buying expat groceries and the items that we are more familiar with, was somewhat limited. We all used to be waiting for friends and family to be coming from ‘home’ armed with suitcases full of tinned salmon, Branston Pickle and the chocolates that we all know and love. Thankfully, that has all changed massively in the last few years with lots of shops around the city stocking a wide variety of expat groceries. In fact, we are lucky that with the advent of the internet we no longer have to leave our homes to find these products, simple searches online usually provide the answers that you need and many offer delivery direct to your door. There will be many people in and around the city who would crave English sausages and bacon only to have to make do with the local substitutes which fall some way short of the mark. Luckily, bacon, sausage and even black pudding have once again formed part of the diet of many British expats thanks to the ease and convenience that these products can now be purchased. It isn’t just the foods from the UK that now fill our stores, you only have to look around and see many products from across Europe, North America and Australia. In fact, every nationality is now well catered for when it comes to all foodstuff and groceries that they would expect to find in any supermarket back in their home. The options are plentiful and you certainly won’t be left craving for tinned products, raw meats and those sweets that we fancy once in a while! 10 Expat Groceries

COVER FEATURE

Valentines Day is an opportunity for loved ones to exchange gifts, flowers and, of course, go out for romantic meals. All this is due to one person, St. Valentine, but how much do you know about the saint and the tradition of Valentines Day? Here is a brief run down on what you may need to know dating right back to Roman times. WHO IS ST. VALENTINE? In actual fact, very little is known about the man himself other than he dates back to Roman times when the tradition of Valentine’s Day began. There are at least three saints recognised by the Catholic Church called Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom went on to become martyrs. One story, and the one that most attribute to the real beginnings of the celebrations relates to a priest who was executed by Emperor Claudius II. He believed that single men made better soldiers so, therefore, banned younger men from marrying. ORIGINS OF VALENTINE’S DAY The general consensus is that this was a Pagan festival that was celebrated in February to ‘celebrate’ Valentine’s death believed to have been on 14th February. The Christian church made it a feast and this is why so many people go out for a meal on Valentine’s Day as it is something of a tradition. The connection with romance originated in the UK and France, it was believed to be the start of the birds mating season and the day has remained the same since around 1400’s. TYPICAL GREETINGS In the 17th century, it was common for lovers to exchange small gifts as a show of their affection towards one another. They were accompanied by hand-written notes, by the start of the 20th century, these had started to be replaced by printed cards. These days, most people celebrate with flowers, chocolates and by going out for a romantic meal to celebrate their love for each other. 14 Cover Feature

VALENTINE’S DAY IN PATTAYA Of course, Pattaya is often a place that is closely associated with couples so it is hardly surprising that it is celebrated in the city. The ladies often receive flowers along with, in many cases, gold along with going out for a meal. Many of the hotels are offering packages to encourage people to stay a little longer and see just what the city has to offer. Naturally, the hotels will be offering romantic meals but there are plenty of other places that you can eat. What better way to show your love for your other half than a romantic meal at one of the following rooftop dining venues. The new Sky 32 at Grande Centre Point, next to terminal 21 on North Pattaya Road, or along Pattaya Beach Road, the Sky Restaurant at Siam@Siam hotel or the Horizon at the Hilton on the 34th floor. The Ruffino Lounge at Centara Phratumnak offers a wonderful sunset view from their rooftop, and further south is DIB at D Varee on Jomtien Beach. Alternatively, you could choose to dine on the beach at popular venues like the Glasshouse, Cafe Del Mar or Bacco Beach, all very close to each other in Na Jomtien, or one of the five star hotels such as Centara Grand Mirage or the Pullman located on Wongamat Beach offering romantic set menus. A few other notable mentions would be Cabbages & Condoms, Caprice at Royal Cliff Hotel, or The Sky Gallery, all are located in Phratumnak. For fine dining, Cafe des Amis is off Thappraya Road, Mantra on Beach Road, in Wongamat you could choose Surf & Turf or the Breeze Beach Club. These are just a few potentially romantic venues if you are planning to impress a loved one but there are so many places to choose from that we simply could not list them all. There really are some superb options when it comes to enjoying a romantic meal in Pattaya and you definitely won’t be disappointed. There is something for everyone’s budget and everyone’s taste just make sure that you book early to avoid disappointment. visit our website | www.pattaya.guide

PUB & BAR DINING

With thousands of expats and foreign tourists in Pattaya it is no surprise to find lots of pubs and bars. Most pubs will have all the live sports you could hope for and unlike many parts of the world there is no limit to the amount of sport displayed at any one time so expect to find lots of TV’s when you enter. Food in these establishments is often very well priced, excellent quality and large portions. If you don’t fancy the local Thai food then the pubs and bars are for you. It doesn’t matter what nationality you are, the pubs of Pattaya are welcoming places and everyone will be made to feel welcome regardless of it is their first visit or their hundredth.
