Pattaya also known as Fun City is Thailand’s most popular resort only 90 minutes from Bangkok. Once a sleepy fishing town, Pattaya first boomed as an R&R spot during the Vietnam War and has been a popular tourism destination ever since. Currently, Pattaya is booming and the opening of the Suvarnabhumi Airport has made visiting easier than ever. Pattaya is popular not only as a beach resort and for its entertainment, nightlife and shopping, but also for the broad selection of recreational activities it caters for, from golf and horseback riding to bungee jumping, karting and shooting - not to mention a wide variety of watersports such as scuba diving, jet-skiing, sailing, water skiing, windsurfing and kite surfing. Pattaya, unlike other beach resorts, shows no respite after sundown, Pattaya’s nightlife is unique and fascinating with Walking Street, South Pattaya in the centre of it all. This is the most popular place to go amongst tourists and expats and you’ll find many go go bars, beer bars, discos, street entertainers and the odd ladyboy. Food is another one of the highlights of any trip to Pattaya. From giant prawns to spicy som tam salad, there is every imaginable cuisine here. Cajun, Chinese, Indian, Italian, English, French, Vietnamese, German, Russian and many more. Today Pattaya attracts annually more then a million tourists from all over the world. Pattaya provides high standard hotels, restaurants, sports, entertainment and shopping. It really has it all and a whole lot more.

GETTING AROUND GUIDE
THIS MONTH TAXI FROM BANGKOK TO PATTAYA It doesn’t matter where we come from in the World the chances are that when we first arrive you will fly into Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok. This is usually after a long flight and for those travelling onwards to Pattaya the last thing that we want is any problems at the airport. Thankfully, the taxi service that is available from the airport is extremely efficient with a desk arranging taxis on your behalf. The fare is agreed prior to travel and paid directly to the taxi driver. Should you wish to go on the Expressway, which is highly recommended you will pay the toll in addition. Generally, the journey from the airport takes 90 minutes depending on the traffic. The price will again vary depending on where you are staying but between 1,200 to 1,500 THB would be reasonable. The journey will take you straight out of Bangkok and you will get to see limited parts of the local countryside in the outlying areas of Bangkok and close to Chonburi. This is possibly not the most picturesque but is probably very different what you have been used to in your home country. This journey is pretty uneventful which is no bad thing when you are looking to start your holidays. Obviously some people will choose to stay in the capital Bangkok first and the then travel down to Pattaya. Most people to tend to stay in the Sukhumvit area or Silom area of the capital. Assuming that you are staying in a hotel, the hotels will easily be able to find you a suitable taxi service to take you down to Bangkok. The rates charged will be very similar to that charged from the airport. The time that this journey takes will be very much dependant on how quickly you can get out of Bangkok with congestion certainly being an issue. Should you be looking to simply flag down a taxi on the street don’t be surprised if the first couple of attempts fail with the driver refusing to take you. This is not personal but they feel they can earn more money working locally. Most taxis have a guide price attached to the back of the driver’s seat but they are likely to want to agree a price before commencing the journey. 8

With a wealth of international restaurants offering delicious food, Pattaya is truly the crossroads of cuisine in Asia. French, Mexican, German, ltalian, Indian, Chinese, Scandinavian, Korean, Japanese and of course, Thai plus many other varieties of restaurant are located within the city. For most visitors to Pattaya the experience of new and interesting dishes is an exciting alternative to the traditional foods available at home. However, along with wonderful Thai dishes, one should sample the culinary delights available from other countries. Try “Kimji” a type of Korean spicy salad or maybe “sizzling Fajitas” a popular Mexican dish. Also, why not take this opportunity to find new ways of cooking traditional ingredients… there are now several cooking schools around the city where for a nominal fee you can learn to cook local dishes as well as go shopping to local markets and buy the ingredients you will need. Local specialities include: Tom Yam Gung (spicy prawn soup), Gaeng Kiewan (green spicy curry). If you like your food “hot” then try some of the food served from the vast number of vending carts across the city. Fried Rice with Shrimp 1 SERVING • PREP TIME: 25 MINS
THAI COOKING GUIDE INGREDIENTS: 1.5 cups Thai jasmine rice
6 green onions (spring onions)
5-6 large prawns, cut in half length-wise
1 fresh Thai chilli pepper
2 eggs
1 tbsp sugar
1 medium/small onion
3 tbsp light soy sauce
3 medium cucumbers
2 tbsp tomato ketchup or Thai ketchup
2 fresh limes
1/4 cup cooking oil
2 tbsp fresh chopped coriander
METHOD Steam the jasmine rice in a rice cooker, using about 2 cups water. Slice onion into rings of approximately 1/4” thickness. Fry onion in oil until they start to turn golden brown. Add the prawns, ketchup, sugar and soy sauce, and stir together. Add the steamed rice and continue to stir-fry. Remove from pan. Fry eggs in 1 tbsp oil, turning and breaking regularly. When done, mix in the rice, and season to taste (we suggest sprinkling it with Thai pepper powder). Cut cucumbers into 1/4” slices, and slice the red chili lengthwise. Spoon the stir-fried rice onto plates, and garnish with coriander and chili. Serve cucumber slices, spring onions and lime wedges on the side of plate. 20

Often referred to as the gateway to Koh Samet however Ban Phe is a hidden gem with white sandy beaches. Ban Phe has plenty to offer in it’s own right and is surrounded by the fantastic beaches of Suan Soi and Hat Maerampung and these are well worth a visit. The small town of Ban Phe in Rayong Province is rapidly expanding from what was once a sleepy fishing port. It is somewhere that is easy to get to from Pattaya (approx. 1 hour drive away), Bangkok Airport (approx. 2 hours drive away) and Rayong which is just a matter of minutes away. The obviously makes the town easily accessible to large groups of people. Although the town is relatively small it has a number of international restaurants serving delights such French, Italian and Swiss food along with the usual bars offering English and other European dishes. There are a few hotels and quite a few guesthouses and hostels that cater more for backpackers and those looking to make the short journey across to Koh Samet. For those looking to stay longer there are a few villages where houses can be rented for periods of 1 month upwards. There are a couple of massage and spas in the area for those looking to wind down after a long day travelling or perhaps seeing the local sights and attractions. There are of course shops and supermarkets available along with pharmacists and all the usual things that you would expect in a town. One of the things that the Rayong Province is perhaps most famous for is the wide selection of golf courses that are in the area. Getting to these courses is something that is very straightforward from Ban Phe. Other sports that are available in the area include a gyms, banana boats (that are available on most beaches), cycling and the Cable Rides and Rainforest Tour at Kao Yai Da which is around 25km away. All in all this is an excellent place to spend a few days escaping from hustle and bustle of Pattaya. You are sure to feel more relaxed on your return.

If you’re the watersports type, then check out both Jomtien and Pattaya beaches where you can find windsurfing, parasailing, jet skis and canoeing, the mild to strong winds make for excellent windsurfing and sailing conditions throughout the year. ART IN PARADISE Art in Paradise is a three-dimensional art gallery located on Pattaya 2nd Road. The gallery displays more than one hundred three-dimensional painting with the area of 6,000 square meters. NONG NOOCH GARDEN Located approximately 18km south of Pattaya, the Garden can be reached by taking a left turn from Sukhumvit Road at the Km 163 marker. The Garden is a sprawling recreation park in a typical Thai setting. A group of traditional Thai pavilions and gardens of different flowering plants are positioned around the beautifully landscaped site. Opening Times: 8am to 6pm. Website: www.nongnoochtropicalgarden.com THE COLOSSEUM PATTAYA The Colosseum Cabaret Show located on Threprassit Road in Jomtien is the largest ladyboy (transvestite) show in the whole of Asia with a seated capacity of over 1000, 350 of which are classed as VIP seats. All of the seats are located in a semi circle to ensure that all visitors have an unobstructed view. The Colosseum is well located in Jomtien so there is easy access to theatre especially for visitors coming from out of town. The Colosseum, needless to say is designed to look like the Colosseum in Rome and came in at a cost of around THB400 million. The show itself describes itself as ‘glitzy and glamorous’ with spectacular costumes are well choreographed dance routines. THE SRI RACHA TIGER FARM The farm, which is situated at 20km marker on highway No.36, raises a large number of Bengal tigers, as well as large crocodiles. Within the compound is a gigantic temple like structure entirely made of wood that is 105 metres high at the highest point which was constructed to withstand wind and sunshine on the seashore, with exquisite architectural features, the sanctuary was conceived out of the vision that human civilization has been achieved and nurtured by religious and philosophical truths. Pattaya has numerous large malls, small malls, supermarkets, bazaar-style markets, and thousands of other shops. Expect to find plenty of clothes shops and coffee shops but do not expect to find variety as most shops are selling the same things. Pattaya actually has a long way to go to catch up with Bangkok for variety and volume of shops but it is trying with several new shopping centres opening in recent years, and there’s more to come.
Bargaining is a way of life here but don’t worry if you don’t know your Thai numbers as most shop keepers will carry a calculator to show the price. As a general rule what ever their first price is, half it and you will be closer to what they are actually willing to sell the item for. If you are not happy then simply walk away as the shop keeper down the street will be selling the same thing. Try to have some fun when bargaining because if the shop keeper likes you they may give you a better price and never get aggressive, it doesn’t pay.

The island of Koh Chang is a tropical marine national park. It consists of over 70% rainforest and is the best preserved tourist holiday destination in Thailand. Situated four hours from Pattaya, Koh Chang Thailand’s second largest island after Phuket. Recently, with the surge of development and popularity, it has been elevated to Thailand’s new tourist haven. It has white sandy coves and beaches, pristine rain forests and abundance of wildlife and marine life, high mountain peaks, several scenic waterfalls, a rich variety of cuisine and great nightlife. Accommodation ranges from simple beach huts and bungalows to luxury villas and apartments. If you drive, you can hire motorbikes, jeeps and cars to take you to any of the beaches along the coastal roads and, in the evening, there are plenty of restaurants, live music bars and nightclubs to choose from to spice up your stay. ACCOMMODATION Paddy’s Palms Resort, 32 room resort with hot water, air con, TV and fridge. The resort itself has a large swimming pool, excellent parking and is located 5 minutes from Whites Sands Beach. 1000 – 1300 baht Palm Garden Hotel, a small 12 room hotel with hot water, air con, TV and fridge. Just 50m from the beach in the heart of the main tourist spot, White Sands Beach. RESTAURANTS 15 Palms, a beautiful beach side restaurant on White Sands Beach serves European food with everything from pizzas, salads, pasta, burgers and of course Thai food. Paddy’s Palms, Koh Chang’s first Irish Pub is a well managed pub with a great atmosphere. They have a pool table, wireless internet, live sport on big screens, great Italian coffee, traditional Irish dishes, Kilkenny and Guinness on tap. The restaurant is the most popular on the Island and must be visited. 64

KOH LARN GUIDE
Koh Larn is a small island in the Gulf of Thailand about 7km off the coast of Pattaya Beach. The Island is about 4km long and 2km wide and at it is about 180 meters high at the highest point. The terrain is mostly mountainous which is covered in most part with heavy vegetation. Infrastructure is mainly narrow roadways covered with brick pavers. Some of the roadways are very steep and only wide enough for two motorbikes to pass by each other, but most roads are suitable for regular traffic. Koh Larn has six main beaches and a few smaller beaches for visitors to enjoy. All the beaches are of white sand and clear blue waters. There are many water sport activities at each of the beaches. There are also many other activities such as parasailing for you to enjoy while visiting Koh Larn. All the beaches have full facilities such as bathrooms and showers. Then there are the restaurants that serve up delicious fresh catch of the day seafood or just about any other dish you may desire. You can choose to order your meal in the restaurant or straight from your beach lounger. Yes, a day on Koh Larn can be a very relaxing experience, with the gentle sounds of the ocean and without all the noise of the city. There are many resorts on the island of Koh Larn, they range from budget rooms to luxury accommodations one of the best is Suntosa Resort. While room rates are a little higher on the island than in Pattaya or Jomtien it is well worth the experience of spending the night on the island of Koh Larn. Some people like Koh Larn so much they end up staying there for extended periods like months and years. 66

Visas are probably the one thing that causes most confusion in Thailand. It seems that the rules regarding visas change on an almost daily basis and sometimes even depending on who you see or the questions that you ask. Whilst it is impossible to give any sort of advice when Immigration Officers are acting on a ‘whim’ it is possible to explain what visas are available in Thailand. Below is a simple guide to the general types of Visa that you can get for your stay in Thailand. VISA ON ARRIVAL This is the visa that is given to you at the airport when you arrive in Thailand. This is a form of tourist visa that grants you 30 days stay in the Kingdom. This can be extended at immigration for up to a maximum of 30 days. TOURIST VISA A 60 day Tourist Visa is obtain from a Thai Embassy (outside of Thailand) prior to your travel to the Kingdom. The visa can be single or multi entry. Again it is possible to extend this visa at Immigration although extensions are not always guaranteed. NON IMMIGRANT VISA This is valid for 90 days and is usually a single entry visa. There are a number of visas in this category although the most common are B (for the purposes of work), ED (for the purpose of education), O (to visit family residing in Thailand) or OA (for a retirement visa). The single entry visa is usually obtained in your home country prior to travel and then will be extended at the Immigration Department once you are in Thailand.

BUSINESS VISA This is the Non Immigrant B Visa that you will obtain from Immigration. This allows you to get a work permit and conduct business legally in Thailand. Once you have this visa you will need to report to the Immigration Department once every 90 days. MARRIAGE VISA To obtain a Marriage Visa you must be legally married and have THB400,000 in a Thai bank account. There are several documents that you will need to produce such as your marriage certificate, proof of funds, copy of your spouse’s Tabian Baan and a map to your home in Thailand. RETIREMENT VISA To obtain a retirement visa in Thailand you must be over 50 years of age, not working and have THB800,000 in a Thai Bank or an income of THB65,000 per month or combination of the two. PERMANENT RESIDENT VISA To qualify for this visa you must have been living in Thailand for 3 consecutive, 1 year visas. If you are married to a Thai for over 5 years you need an income of THB30,000 per month and if you are single THB80,000 per month. All information is correct at time of writing but subject to change.
