HAIKUNOMICS

EDITORIAL I like to incorporate as much creativity, humor, real-life examples and statistics to my economics classes as possible. I do well with examples and statistics, the same way as with humor (my students may disagree here), but sometimes economics and creativity don’t seem to get along in the classroom, so I need to try a little harder. Here’s one of those attempts. We were starting International Economics, and had just finished Macroeconomics. As I was planning my next few classes, on one of my not-so-inspired days, I googled “haiku economics” to see if there was something I could use. Lucky for me, on October 26th 2011, The Economist made reference to a haiku competition organized by The Kauffman Foundation. I printed the article, added a very basic description of a haiku in English, and gave everyone time to get their creative juices flowing. This is a sample from what was produced those days by the 2013 economics class. Thank you students. And thanks for all the utilityfilled moments this year!
