Style Community Education News Events BEHinD THE SCEnES Welcome to the first behind the scenes column! If only my English teacher could see me know, Mrs Wood I think, as spelling was never my strong point (so if you catch a mistake, just glaze right over it) so I know you all have visions of me now like Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex and the City while I’m typing away, just add 8 stone and less hair and you’re about there! The idea of this splurb is to give you a bit of an inside scoop on what’s going on here at the Scene HQ, like what’s for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well and mid-meal snacks and goodies, office gossip, new magazine launches, hot offers from adver tisers not to be miss, what we are all doing at the weekend, restaurant reviews, and, those of you who know me, and the lucky ones who are yet to have that pleasure, the topic of drink and par ties! So what did May bring....? Well apar t from the launch of our first ever edition of the fabulous City Scene and the confirmation of a new magazine we are to launch, that I can’t tell you about just yet, PLUS (and this is the best bit) the purchase of my first ever house with the boyfriend... so not much really (in sarcastic tone). It has been so hectic, one day we barely had time

to eat cakes, now what’s that about? The City Scene has gone soooooo well we can’t believe it! A massive thank you to all you lovely people who helped with this, especially as we left everything until last minute. com, there were quite a few favours we have yet to return. A huge thank you goes out to Ace Carpentry who built all the City Scene stands, and Barker Signs & Commercial Signs for painting them and arranging the stickers. We have had some lovely calls from readers and adver tisers about our new addition to the Scene family, which we are very grateful for, as we have all worked so hard to bring you a local magazine FREE to pick up covering news, education, events and local gossip in general. If anyone has any information about what’s happening in and around the Peterborough area they would like to send me, my email address is charlotte@scenepublishing.co.uk. Any ideas, requests, suggestions or questions are all welcome. Please don’t forget that the mag is now on line as well at www.thecityscene.co.uk so no excuses, you lovely lot, to miss an issue! So, the forecast for June.... Hopefully the keys to our new pad,

which I am very excited about. The house needs a lot of work doing to it, so if anyone is at a loose end please feel free to come and give us a hand. Also I’m up for any donations - not greedy, just a new bathroom, tiles, shower, carpets, kitchen, cooker, fridge freezer...! Then we have the summer Scene BBQ to arrange if the weather decides it’s actually summer. There will be quite a few tails to tell there I’m sure, but then all the good stuff will be sacred to the rule of ‘what goes on tour stays on tour!’ You’ll have to have a look at the pictures on Facebook when I get round to getting up a page. And then there is our brand new office move to Wittering, which we are all looking forward to as all the girls will be together in one office and I predict it will be a right hoot, so if anyone is passing, please feel free to pop in any time, bake days are on a Friday, ummmm cake and a nice cup of tea. On that note, I think I’ll put the kettle on. Looking forward to chatting to you all next month.

Events will take place in the city centre from 2pm, including children's races, community cycling events and entertainment in the lead up to the big race. Unlike any other cycling series in the world The Halfords Tour Series is not based on individual athletic performance, but instead on team performance. Ten teams of five highly-tuned professional cyclists will engage in combat against each other to become overall Halfords Tour Series champions. With 50 cyclists racing for the top three positions and the right to pull on the Halfords leader’s jerseys, there is guaranteed to be one hour of fastpaced and attacking racing, with plenty of excitement and tension. Riders in the 2010 series include Olympic medallists Steven Burke and Rob Hayles. www.tourseries.co.uk www.joolzedymond.com

Peterborough’s Destination Centre The new Destination Centre is a one stop-information-centre for businesses, residents, shoppers and visitors in the city centre and combines the previously known Tourist Information Centre. Over 2,500,000 visitors came to the city in 2008, from the latest figures published by the East of England Tourist board survey, and for many visitors and likewise residents, a one-stop information point is the most efficient way to understand the area. Run by nine members of staff, full and part time, the Destination Centre is not just for visitors to the area, but for anyone in Greater Peterborough needing signposting. As well as information about bus, cycle and train routes accessible from the city, the centre can also direct you to the attractions the area has to offer and an easy way to book conference facilities and accommodation. Tickets can also be purchased for the Key Theatre and other theatres nationally, with the

SCHOOL TO GET nEW £400,000 SPORTS PiTCH A new £400,000 all-weather sports pitch is planned for the Orton Longueville School campus to replace a similar pitch that will be lost when work starts on the £20 million new Ormiston Bushfield Academy this autumn. Councillor John Holdich, cabinet member for education, skills and university, said: “The site for the new Ormiston Bushfield Academy premises is situated on the existing all-weather pitch, so building a new pitch on the Orton Longueville campus will allow local people to continue enjoying their sports while construction proceeds.” A planning application for the new pitch has been submitted to the city council and, if approved, it is hoped that construction can be completed during late summer and early autumn. It will be located at the south-west corner of the Orton Longueville campus and will be large enough for 11-a-side soccer or hockey games; three five-a-side soccer pitches; or two seven-a-side soccer games.
Animal Herbal Supplements There are many animal foods on the market that contain chemical preservatives, fillers (of no nutritional value at all) and indigestible proteins. These foods can also contain the incorrect ratios of minerals which can, over time, have an adverse affect on animals’ health. As an example, a food with the incorrect ratio of calcium to phosphorus (typically this should be between 1.0-1.5:1) will lead to skeleton deformation and cereal diets often have low iodine content that can lead an animal to suffering from thyroid problems. This will undoubtedly lead to increased vet bills. One of the best ways of achieving a healthy pet apart from good exercise is through a well balanced diet. Well balanced in terms of having the correct amount of minerals and ratios. There are some very good quality foods available and one which we are particularly fond of is the Hill’s Science Plan diet. This food is very well balanced and highly nutritious. Those animals that have mistakenly been fed on poor diets will most likely suffer
some form of ailment in the future and depending how long the animal has suffered the ailment it could become very deep rooted within its system. Changing your animal’s diet to a more healthy option will most likely have no reversing affect on the ailment. This is where herbal supplementation plays a very important role. Natural herbs will get to the root cause of the problem rather than deal with the symptom alone and will detoxify the liver free of all chemicals induced from, for example, poor quality foods or from environmental conditions. Herbs are a natural food and will provide the body with the minerals it requires and strength to cleanse itself. It is recommended that your pet takes these herbal supplements for at least 3 months to heal the body. Our range of Natural Herbal products is too vast to list, however, here are some products that you’ll find exceptionally good for treating.
For Bad Breath, Urine Burn Marks or Bitches on Heat - Cats and Dogs Liquid Chlorophyll By simply putting a squirt of Liquid Chlorophyll into the animal’s drinking water will help prevent burn marks on lawns when dog bitches are in season. This will help towards stopping the bitch scent when they come into heat and also reduces bad breath. HOW DOES iT WORK – Chlorophyll helps to improve immune response, reduces acidic levels, deodorises the body and cleans the blood of impurities. It also helps towards improving proper bowel movements. Bad breath can be the result of decaying teeth from eating meats, poor digestion or parasites. Equally, Chlorophyll will deodorise internally and oxygenate the blood. Parasites hate oxygen. Liquid Chlorophyll is like having a very mild detox, helping to clean the animal from within. Retail Price: £9.95 less 30% (if you quote this Scene Magazine) plus postage & Packing

Caring for
It seems summer is finally here. You have spent a lot of money and time getting your hair colour perfect for your holiday. Here are a few tips on maintaining your hair after you’ve left the salon. When it comes to keeping the colour, it’s all about the shampoo you’re using.. A certain amount of colour fade has to be expected especially in sunny climates. The majority of
colour fade however can be prevented by using the right products, especially when it comes to your shampoo. It is also important to follow with a conditioner every time you wash your hair; this is because the action of a shampoo is to open up the outer surface of your hair to clean it. If it is not sealed down by the action of a conditioner, colour can more easily fade. Coloured hair need special protection when you are in the sun or swimming, the help avoid excessive fading and damage. Try a sun and chlorine protection product or wear a hat "full" time.

TOLETHORPE HALL Tolethorpe Hall has origins going back 800 years to the early 11th century when the first manor house was built on the site by a Norman family who came over from France after the Norman Conquest of 1066. The setting of the hall overlooking classic English parkland in attractive Rutland countryside has changed little over centuries. The gentle River Gwash flows gently by providing water for the historic mill built in the early 18th century on the site of a previous mill recorded in the Domesday book. The mill, just 200 yards from the hall, was part of the Tolethorpe estate until 1967. £335m hospital takes city into new era In just five months’ time we will witness the dawn of a new era when the new state-of-the-ar t Peterborough City Hospital opens to its first patients. The 612-bed, four-storey hospital is just behind the Edith Cavell site at Bretton Gate and replaces Peterborough District and Edith Cavell Hospitals and Peterborough Maternity Unit. Construction of the impressive £335m building began in 2007 and as the months have passed it has quickly begun to dominate the skyline as the city’s newest landmark. Not since the Peterborough Cathedral was built 800 years ago has the city seen such a massive building project. At one stage more than 1,000 staff were employed by Brookfield Construction to work on the vast building. From the outside the building is vir tually complete, but inside it is a hive of activity as the final stages of the build are underway with rooms being

This novel romps along at a fantastic pace – and yet it also provides the reader with great insight into key moments of history. Opening in 1917, the story is told by Nora, the fictitious nanny to the Kennedy clan. We are introduced to JFK, Bobby, Ted and the other Kennedy siblings when they are babies and we watch them grow up during the course of the novel. Set against a fascinating background of the Depression in the USA and the Second World War in the UK, it’s a compelling novel peopled with unforgettable characters. It’s also gently irreverent, extremely funny and very touching. If you like it, you’ll love her previous book, Gone With The Windsors – which took as its focus the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, reported in the fictitious diary of a makebelieve friend of Wallace Simpson.
An Elephant in the Garden by Michael Morpurgo Harper £12.99 One of the our greatest children’s authors, Michael Morpurgo’s books appeal across the age divide as they can be read on so many levels. I defy you not to sob your way through War Horse. His new novel, An Elephant in the Garden is a thrilling and moving book featuring an extraordinary animal caught up in a very human war. Set in 1944, it features Elizabeth – her mother works at Dresden zoo and her father is in the German army. Elizabeth adores Marlene, the zoo’s young elephant. But the Director says the animals must be shot in case the zoo is bombed and they run amok. Elizabeth and her mother move Marlene into their back garden…but then the bombs start to fall. It’s mid winter, their home is destroyed, they must flee the city, they must avoid the Russian troops – all this with a young elephant in tow.

Fiction
My Bonnie by John Suchet - Harper Collins £18.99 Earlier this year, the nation’s favourite newsreader John Suchet revealed that his beautiful 67-year-old wife Bonnie, the love of his life, is suffering from Dementia. During the past three years he has gone from lover to carer and this moving, painfully honest account describes his loneliness and despair. Written in passionate and vivid prose, Suchet gives voice to both the warmth of the good times and the utter anguish of the bad times. In a series of moving and heartfelt stories, he weaves present day descriptions of life with Bonnie now – with memories of the romantic years they shared together. John personally cared for his beloved wife and for three years he kept her condition secret from all but family and close friends. Last September, however, he made the agonizing decision to move his wife to a full-time care home. This book is brave – at times it’s stark – however, essentially this is a love story; of how devotion and dedication can make something positive and rich of even the hardest times.
Dead Like you by Peter James - Macmillan, £17.99 Peter James is on the UK’s most treasured crime and thriller writers and his Roy Grace detective novels are immensely popular. The author based Dead Like You on a true life case – that of The Rotherham Shoe Man when over 20 women reported rape by a man who then took their shoes. This novel is relocated to Brighton where, after a New Year’s Eve ball, a woman is raped. A week later, another victim. All that links them is that their shoes have been taken. For Detective Superintendent Roy Grace, these new cases dredge up similarities to “Shoe Man” - an unsolved series of crimes resulting in a murder a decade earlier. Could this be a copycat, or has Shoe Man resurfaced? More women are assaulted and Grace becomes convinced they are dealing with the same man. Soon enough, Grace and his team are in a race against time to identify and save the life of the potential 6th victim. I like the character of Grace – he’s a modern police officer; down to earth and dedicated but out of work he’s also a troubled man haunted by the disappearance of his own wife years ago. The author himself is a member of the Sussex Police Rape Prevention Team.

Cinema Releases
4.3.2.1 – Release Date: June 2nd After directing his first rather successful project ‘Adulthood’ here in the UK, Noel Clarke returns to his directing seat to take on his next motion picture, the strangely titled ‘4.3.2.1’. As well as directing this film he also wrote it and as well as this he stars in it!, so it is clear to me that his heart and soul is in the movie, so I just hope it is as good as he wants it to be. Spanning over two cities four girls destinies intertwine as they all relate to a diamond theft that has just happened, that is all your getting for now, as I don’t want to give too much of the plot away before its release. Killers – Release Date: June 16th From the director that bought us ‘The Ugly Truth’ and ‘21’ he has now returned to hopefully save Ashton Kutcher’s steadily declining career, after his terrible performance in ‘What Happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas’.The story tells of a woman who is abroad on holiday, once there she promptly finds the man of her dreams Spencer Aimes (Ashton) as soon as this happens they tie the knot and get married. Once they move back to their home in the states, events turn bad as their next door neighbours just so happen to be hired assassins, paid to kill the couple. The married couple don’t take this threat likely; they actually retaliate and fight to defend themselves, interesting. So with a combination of comedy, action, and thriller I am predicting this film to be some- what similar to the 2005 smash hit ‘Mr and Mrs Smith’ will it be as memorable? I sure hope so!
DVD Release
Invictus – Release Date: June 14th Clint Eastwood is easily one of my favourite directors in the world, his pasts work include ‘Changeling’ as well as ‘Gran Torino’ both outstanding motion pictures. After being Imprisoned for 27 years, Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) is finally released, once released he is quick to be elected for president, when this happens he notices that his people are divided, what does he do to unite the people together in his country? He does the impossible, he gets the South African rugby team to the Rugby World Cup Championships. With an amazing combination of Matt Damon (acting as Ruby player ‘Francois Pienaar’) and Morgan Freeman you will find yourself watching this film again and again. By Andrew Dex

Sizzling Summer sounds to revive musical memories Some of the most consistently creative music of the 1970s came from the flamboyant Roxy Music with their suave frontman Bryan Ferry. I caught the original line up with Brian Eno early in their career at a Crystal Palace Garden Party and by the time I saw them again at Birmingham, they had taken their sophisticated take on rock right round the world. More recently I saw Brian Ferry at one of the picnic concerts held in the grounds of Belvoir Castle, near Grantham, another lovely setting for a summer night. Roxy Magic is the longest-running tribute to Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry and the group make an appearance at Bourne Corn Exchange on Saturday, July 3 at 8.30pm. The real band were well known for their brilliant musicianship and playing, so this tribute band have a lot to live up to, while their singer, Keith Hackett, emulates the look and sound of the smooth Mr Bryan Ferry Ferry. Tickets cost £10.00 in advance and £12.00 on the door (subject to availability) and can be ordered from 0782 803 2241. Using Essential Oils – Part 1
Oil Burner
Many people associate aromatherapy with massage and although this is an excellent treatment, particularly where stress or muscular problems are involved, it is not the only way to benefit from essential oils. For many people massage is not possible (e.g. too frail) or not practical (time constraints) or too costly. In some instances, other methods of absorption are more effective. The internal use of essential oils is controversial and prohibited by most professional organisations in the UK. In any case, there are so many others ways of using essential oils, that taking by mouth should be avoided. The only exception to this is mouth washes and gargles, where the oils are not swallowed. Gargling with oils is an excellent way of treating sore throats (one drop each of tea tree and lemon in a tumbler of water, stirred well before each mouthful. Alternatively use sandalwood/roman chamomile). Inhalation is one of the most effective means of using essential oils, both on a physical and emotional level. It is particularly good for respiratory problems. You should not inhale directly from the bottle – essential oils are highly concentrated and powerful – but for an instant effect, one or two drops on a tissue work well for headaches, sinus problems and colds(e.g. peppermint or eucalyptus Smithii). Inhaling oils from a bowl of steaming water (not asthmatics) is particularly good for coughs and colds. Using a vaporiser means you can treat several people at once and keep a room healthy, as many essential oils act as air purifiers. Also on

a psychological level, oils can be used to treat insomnia or depression. Bathing with oils combines skin absorption with steam inhalation and can be very relaxing. This method can be is helpful for aches and pains, cold and flu, and calming babies and children. Because essential oils are fat soluble, they do
lemon, peppermint, and clove) are skin irritants and care needs to be taken with quantities. Prepare the bath to the appropriate depth and temperature before mixing in the oils and ideally stay in the water for 10 minutes or more. Essential oils are powerful and should be used with care. For use during pregnancy,
not disperse well in water, and are best mixed with a carrier before use. Carrier oils (such as sunflower or grapeseed) are moisturising to the skin, but can make the bath slippery. A plain vegetable based lotion, full fat (whole) milk or honey (good for eczema and psoriasis) can be used. Alternatively, you can purchase bath foam bases from aromatherapy suppliers. A single drop of essential oil is sufficient for a baby or young child up to 8 years, but some oils (e.g.

Think sunglasses, think J. Neville Opticians J.Neville Opticians situated in Whittlesey, Peterborough, is an independent opticians with 25 years experience in all aspects of eye care. Jan Neville and his exper t team are ver y personable and take a lot of pride in the work they do and believe in giving you the time and care your eyes deser ve. Jan said: “Our aim is to provide the highest level of professional eyecare ser vices, using the latest techniques and equipment in a friendly, caring environment.” He adds: “We stock a large range of spectacles and sunglasses from standard right through to designer. There is something for everyone and the choice has never been better.” Did you know that prolonged exposure to sunlight without eye protection can lead to "sunburn" of the eye? So before heading into the summer sun's intense ultraviolet (UV) rays, protect your eyes with a quality pair of sunglasses. By shielding your eyes from harmful sun exposure, you are also protecting yourself from eye-related diseases later in life that can include macular degeneration, cataracts and pter ygia (a mass of tissue arising from the inner corner of the eye).
nOT ALL SUnGLASSES ARE CREATED EQUAL Don't assume that all sunglasses, whether they offer UV protection or not, will protect your eyes from the sun. Wearing sunglasses with no UV protection is actually more harmful than not wearing sunglasses at all because your pupils dilate when you wear sunglasses, allowing more UV rays to reach the eyes.
What to look for when shopping for sunglasses: • Look for labels that read 100% protection from both UVA and UVB rays. • Choose sunglasses that are shatterproof. • Choose styles that fit the face closely--like wrap-around sunglasses--that protect from sunlight at many angles.

MOTORinG by Wesley Thompson
We as Britons are optimistic people; we revel in the smallest glimmer of opportunity and celebrate the slightest of victories. Giving that a sunny day comes along as often
as England win a World Cup, it is astonishing to consider that Britain purchases on average, more convertibles than France, Spain and Italy combined! With early Met Office predictions suggesting a record breaking summer, it might just be that for the
Drop-top
first time many car owners may experience that summertime feeling, sunglasses on, hood down and the wind in their hair. Middle aged men are momentarily reverted back to their youth, as their achingly embarrassed children attempt to hide away from the glance of passersby overawed by the brilliance of Dad’s ‘Barry
Gibb mega mix’. In response manufacturers have performed the same trick for years, as the summer month’s approach they take their normal, perfectly acceptable model, cut the top off and give it a premium price tag and guess what, every year we buy them. The convertible is no more a car than it is a lifestyle or an institution, driving a convertible; you let people know you want to be noticed. No longer are you
cocooned from the elements, you really feel the driving experience and in that sense, what the convertible does is transform your everyday, mundane journey into an adventure, an innately and profoundly new experience and for that alone, it is no wonder they are so popular. With the leading brands catering for all budgets, it seems there is a car out there for everyone, here is just a taste of what manufacturers have to offer for upcoming summers >

This is the brand new Renault Wind, another funky little French coupe that is sure to steal the hearts of many a hairdresser. Affordable, functional and most important of all stylish, this economically inspired twist on the already popular Renault Twingo, amalgamates the practicalities of the city car with the “Jua’de’vieve” synonymous with the Renault brand. With only two engines expected to feature, including the 99bhp 1.2 TCE and a powerful 133 bhp unit taken directly from the hardcore Twingo Renaultsport, it is clear that Renault want performance to match the styling. ABARTH ROADSTER SS
Increasingly manufacturers have been producing small, lightweight sports cars, with a focus on performance and in particular handling, these road going go-carts are becoming ever more popular, representing a car that is by no mean a practical choice, but in every sense a sports car.The latest offering from Fiat’s Abarth wing is the Roadster SS, although still only speculative, the car has been endowed with the Abarth tag, which for any self respecting petrol head, will bring to mind images of exposed engines and insane Italian design. This modern helping presents a re-invigoration, bottling up and releasing just enough of that Italian magic that fans of the brand have came to love. In the wake of the success of the Fiat 500 Abarth, the Roadster will be fitted with same 1.4 multi-air turbo unit, delivering all important performance whilst still emitting air clean enough for even the green party to enjoy. Expect prices to range from an inviting £12000 and a (no doubt summer) 2013 release AUDi R8 ROADSTER

For as long as I can remember the Porsche 911 has been the king of user friendly super cars. It was able to do a trick that no other super car could, you could drop the kids off at school, peacefully and calmly, setting an example and then drive home in a manner that would leave even Eddy the Eagle grasping at the seams. No competition even came near, that was until the arrival of Audi’s flagship R8. Sleek, streamline and relentlessly beautiful, Audi fitted a V10 straight from a Lamborghini Gallardo yet still managed to attain everyday usability. Now there is a convertible version. Cynics will play the usual card, repeating the same old characteristics associated with the convertible, compromised performance, lack of rigidity, the list goes on.Whilst factually correct, this is clearly missing the point, with the roof down, the R8 is an even more Majestic being, with a 0-60 time of 4.1 seconds and a top speed of 196mph, this £112,000 masterpiece finally allows for the driver to bathe in the glorious sound of that engine note, a sound that has been compared to the late V10 F1 cars of past.Yes, it only has two, seats and yes it is about as kind to the environment as an industrial revolution, but it’s so good that you would be more willing to drop your family off one by one rather than to trundling along in your family saloon. Traditionally the county’s great minds, the aristocracy and the high flying business men were chauffer driven in their Bentley from stately home to their humble weekend abode, nowadays, the Bentley is a car best associated with the premier league Elite and the much beloved matriarchal figures of Mrs Price and Katona. The Bentley is perfectly suited to the modern day celebrity, whilst still beautifully crafted and magnificently refined, it seems the luxurious leather of past has had to make way for the Burberry cloth of present. The Bentley Continental GTC is an engineering masterpiece, featuring the firm’s W12 engine, the car produces 552 bhp and with a top speed of almost 200mph our shining lights of society can travel from salon to restaurant and back to salon in less time than it took for Nick Clegg to turn conservative. At a measly £130,500 this bellowing convertible offers an enticing package merging real comfort and classic design with modern day performance and reliability expected from any VW group production. So jackets on and Umbrellas out, here comes the British summer, let’s hope it is a one for drop top Britain.

Rutland Water Nature Reserve
Not Just For The Birds
Rutland Water Nature Reser ve (RWNR) was created during the 1970’s, a result of the then newly created Rutland Water. Run in par tnership with Anglian Water and the Leicestershire & Rutland Wildlife Trust, the reser ve has enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame and is now regarded as one of the finest Nature Reser ves in Western Europe. The reser ve occupies a narrow strip of land running for nine miles around the Western end of Rutland Water and covers 600 acres. A reser ve is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), a Special Protection Area (SPA) and Ramsar site, designated by The Convention on Wetlands as of international impor tance especially as a waterfowl habitat. Over 250 species of birds have been recorded and on a good spring day, it is possible to see over 100 species of bird, with rarities such as Red Kites a distinct possibility. Over the winter months in excess of 20,000 wild fowl can be found including 10% of the Nor th Western European Gadwall population. Summer sees the Osprey’s return to Rutland Water Nature Reser ve, a site where in 2001, these magnificent fish eating hawks bred for the first time in England for over 150 years! The success of this reser ve is due to wide diversity of habitats that range from ancient woodlands that are carpeted by Blue Bells in the spring, to meadows, streams, shallow water lagoons and reed beds which provide food for the various types of water fowl.
