WEDDING VENUE

When we look back on the weddings we’ve attended in the past one of the most significant things we remember is where it took place. Choosing the right Venue for you and your guests isn’t easy - there are lots of things to consider, attendance numbers, catering, decoration, overnight stay and of course the wow factor. Here are a few hints & tips to get you started.

GUESTS Get this one out of the way first - if you sit down with your families and partners, and work out the maximum number of guests you will be inviting, this will give you an idea of the size of venue you will need. It will also help when planning your budgets and what venue to choose - for example will there be lots of children? Will you need separate areas where the older guests can enjoy the quiet away from the disco, does it have plenty of parking - the option for overnight stays and is it easy for people to get to using public transport, or disabled access? Will we be able to use our own caterers, supply our own drink, place a marquee etc, etc?

Once all of this is established and you’ve decided on either a civil ceremony or church, you can start your hunt for the perfect venue. THE HUNT If your time is short and you like to keep informed go online. By using search engines you can place your key words such as, ‘Wedding Venues Peterborough UK’ which will bring up a list for you to look at. Many sites such as www.hitched. co.uk will have venues in your criteria listed, and if you’re looking for inspiration or are planning to get married away from the local area this is a great place to start.

ways, and many regional magazines will hold adverts for venues, so if you see one pick it up! • Civil ceremony venues have licences for a maximum number of guests. Keep an eye on the venues you fall in love with and make sure that there is enough room for your guests • negotiate - if it’s slightly out of your budget • ask if you could have a simpler wedding breakfast, and serve wedding cake as a dessert, or stick to 1 bottle of each on the table. Many venues will also hold mid-week events or Sunday weddings at a reduced cost - it’s worth looking at what savings can be made if you switch to a Friday or Sunday Wedding.

• Wedding Magazines will give you ideas of how certain weddings work in different types of

• Ask people about their wedding day - visit potential venues for a meal, or book one of their evening events and assess their planning and organisation. Remember it’s your day - you’ve spent months organising it and when you hand the event over, you want to be confidant that

their Events Coordinator is in control. Ask to see pictures of previous events held in the venue - this will give you an idea of what it looks like dressed. Consider photography, are there plenty of places for you to get great photographs too? If you’ve already attended a wedding at a venue you’re considering - ask what else has been done in the past, different to the one you attended.

else may not get done. Ask questions, ask as many questions as you can and go with a list of things you need to know, before you sign on the dotted line. Meet the Events Coordinator - if you like them you’ll feel more at easy leaving the planning of your day in their hands. Get recommendations of suppliers they work with, look at online reviews and above all once you’ve booked the venue, stay in touch. As long as you continue to build a relationship with the venue, your day will run smoothly.

A Day To Remember The Wedding Theme In the beginning I had no idea of what colours should be featured within the theme as such – the choice of flowers really depicted this. I researched the type of flowers that I felt would look beautiful on the day – opting for pastel shades of floribunda roses, and decided upon an

ivory backdrop. Both Richard and I like Green, and as it compliments the flowers and foliage we decided to incorporate it subtly into the scheme within the stationery and also the bridesmaid outfits. Overall I opted for a clean, simple yet elegant look and feel to compliment our venue choice of Burghley House.

The Brides Outfit I researched several dress designers online and shortlisted a few before heading

to

London last June to try them on accompanied by my mother. I really detest clothes shopping and was so grateful that we found ‘the one’ within about half an hour of being in the Pronovias store! I selected a simple ivory silk dress with a strapless bustier and full skirt with a slight gathering at either side. I also chose a beautiful off the shoulder lace bolero train to wear over the dress with a plan to remove it for the evening reception.

The Bridesmaids I had 3 bridesmaids and 2 flower girls. I wanted something quite simple yet sophisticated and decided upon a flattering a-line 60’s shift style dress and sourced a gorgeous gold/green dupion silk from Beckfords Silk (British silk house) and had them made up by Helen Kirkwood of Stamford who did a wonderful job. I decided against the usual flowergirl protocol and opted for Monsoon dresses in ivory tulle with lace bodices.

The Flowers After pouring through ‘Brides’ magazines one evening, I happened across some images of a floral arrangement containing David Austin roses and other gorgeous floribunda roses accompanied by hydrangeas and with a minimum of foliage. The colours looked edible! Sherbet pastel shades of peach, Strawberry, Lemon, Mauve, Ivory and sagey Green. We chose Jo Kirby of ‘Designer Flowers Of Rutland’ (based in Ketton) to realise the look and feel and it was a real addedvalue to discover that Jo also has an intimate knowledge of Burghley House and was able to design arrangements to suit the various locations within the venue that we would be occupying during the day and evenings proceedings.

Real life bride | BURgHLEY HOUSE The Ceremony The ceremony was a very small and intimate affair and held in the summer house overlooking the lake in the private grounds of Burghley estate. After a champagne toast by the lake, we then walked over to the Rose Garden to meet our additional guests for a further drinks reception and canapés. The sun was shining against a backdrop of lush green grounds and the scent of the lavender and roses will always linger in my memory! The guests were offered a tour of the state rooms which ultimately congregated in the Great Hall for our wedding breakfast. All of our food and drink was catered for by ‘Absolute Taste’ (resident at Burghley) – and they were fantastic, providing incredible service throughout the day and night. We offered our guests a variety of choices and courses and I will note that the roasted Longhorn fillet

of Beef was to die for! After the breakfast further guests arrived to join us in the Orangery with the doors opened out into the Rose Garden for the evening reception. Time to party!

Intimate and traditions at the George of Stamford The Wedding Theme We discussed the type of wedding we would like on the evening we got engaged (in Pizza Express on a very snowy and cold February night). We wanted a relaxed, country garden/afternoon tea feel to our wedding and began to plan around this theme. This also allowed me to really exploit my designer side and I was able to create so many handmade touches to our wedding. We decided on a small wedding and invited around 22 of our nearest and dearest.

The Venue We visited many local venues, but the one that stood out for us was The George of Stamford, quaint with beautiful gardens that would fit our theme perfectly. We decided on a Sunday wedding and we were able to have Pimms, Canapes and Croquet in the gardens after the ceremony.

The Outfits After deciding on the theme for the wedding, I made an appointment to visit Miss V Bridal in Market Deeping. The service was amazing and Jemma Vanner the shop owner was so helpful. I amazed myself at my choice! I always thought I would go for an ivory, heavily beaded number but, I loved my Justin Alexander gown from the moment I saw it, a gorgeous coffee colour, with a sweatheart neckline, pleated bodice with an asymmetric beaded belt - beautiful yet simply stunning! Luckily Andrew wanted a suit a little different and chose a brown Prince Edward suit for the grooms men, which he hired from Robert Goddards in Spalding and these complimented my dress perfectly!

Bridesmaids & Pageboy My best friend Sarah was my only bridesmaid, and we had one flower girl, our niece, Holly and one page boy our nephew Ollie. For Sarah, we decided on a brown dress to compliment me, and we bought a gorgeous halterneck dress from Debenams and it looked stunning on her. Holly donned her ‘princess’ bridesmaid dress from John Lewis, where as Ollie was in the same suite as the groomsmen and he looked very dashing indeed!

The Flowers We have never been big fans of flowers and this was one of the areas of the planning that we were never sure about! We decided to leave the flower design in the very capable hands of Emma Peake of Daisies Flower Shop in Spalding (www.daisiesflowershop.com) the brief was simple, roses, thistles and eucalyptus. Emma did an amazing job provided flowers for the whole wedding. I loved my bouquet - it was truly stunning.

Flowers

Choosing your wedding flowers is one of the most exciting things you will do when planning your special day. Flowers provide you with the opportunity to show your personality, through choice of style, colour and selection of blooms and to set the theme for the whole day. But there are so many beautiful flowers and designs and the choice can seem bewildering. The following steps will help point you in the right direction: Think about your flowers from the start of your planning You might think this is a task you can leave until nearer the date of your wedding, but it is better to give some thought to your flowers at an early stage before you have made any final decisions about colour schemes and themes. Do you love a particular shade of purple? or would you love to follow Kate Middleton’s lead by carrying a bouquet of beautifully scented lily-of-the-valley? Check first that the flowers you want will be in season or they could be expensive. It could also

aspire to dramatic, statement blooms in bold colours? Whatever your tastes, it is best not to be too specific about flower varieties and colours at the outset. You may think you have found the perfect flower for you in a magazine, but flowers are seasonal and colours and sizes of particular flowers can vary quite widely. Flowers may even have

been sprayed with a dye to achieve a particular shade. It is better to approach your florist with some ideas of the look you are trying to achieve. If you have pictures of flower designs that you like these can be a good way of putting your ideas across to your florist as they often speak louder than words

Fashion leader or fashion follower? The romantic vintage look has been with us for some time and looks set to continue to be a favourite, particularly with celebrities like Kate Moss. Try making things a little different by including pastel shades of peach or apricot amongst the creams and dusky pinks. A traditional wedding colour scheme of white with shades of green always works well, as Kate Middleton proved. Perhaps add a touch of zesty lime green to freshen the look. But one of the strongest trends for this season is a deep royal purple, which looks fantastic with equally strong contrasting colours such as burnt orange or cerise pink. Particularly popular at the moment are hand tied bouquets and posies which are generally less expensive than traditional wired bouquets but look fabulous with a careful selection of flowers.

Don’t forget to budget! Wise brides will allocate a part of their wedding budget to their flowers. It is sometimes suggested that this should be around 5-10% of the total, but of course this will very much depend on the importance that the bride wants to place on her flowers and the sort of designs she has in mind. However, if you just can’t afford to spend a lot on your flowers don’t despair, there are ways of making your money stretch further. A good florist will be able to work with you to achieve a look you will love but can still afford. By Helen Jane www.helenjanefloristry.co.uk

Editors thought How about something really different? We have all had the dream of what our wedding day will be like, right down to the smallest detail. The more you think about it the more it changes. So to confuse you even more... we have another thought to throw at you - A fish and chip supper! Everybody loves the Great British tradition of fish, chips and peas – so how cool would it be to have them delivered and paper wrapped for your guests? So very retro... and what a talking point!

How to choose your wedding invitations 5 questions to ask when choosing your wedding stationery: 1. Choose a design to match your colour scheme: either go for stationery made from the main colour of your scheme (ie ivory, black, red, silver, brown or gold) or choose

embellishment in that colour (see photo below)

A superb alternative to the usual ‘Buffet’ don’t you agree? Charlotte. X

2. What kind of invitation style do you like? There are many different styles of invitation now - wallets with pockets to store matching RSVP cards, pocket pull-up invitations, where the insert is inside a pocket wallet and is pulled up by ribbon, cheque book style invitations, where up to 4 customised and perforated inserts can be included, postcard invitations and more traditional invitations that open like a card.

3. DIY invitations. Making your own invitations is often seen as a way to save money, but in theory, the time involved in production can be huge and underestimated. You must also

consider the quality of the end result and cost involved, as it isn’t always cheaper than having them produced professionally. Remember, the invitation is the first impression you give to your guests of your special day and it deserves to be one with a real WOW factor!

4. When do you want to send them out? You should check with venue and/or catering suppliers when they need to know your final numbers and then work backwards from then to give your guests between 4 -6 weeks to RSVP. This will give

you a rough time as to when they need to be sent out. Allow yourselves between 2-3 months before then to decide upon your design and approve any samples and to argue over the dreaded guest list! So you really need to start sorting your stationery at least 6 months before your wedding.

5. Have fun with your stationery and choose something that reflects you as a couple – your style, your theme and colour scheme. If you can afford to have something bespoke designed for you, then go for it – you won’t regret it! Remember that stationery includes things needed on the day as well as the invitations beforehand, so get in touch with a stationery specialist and they will point you in the right direction with something that fits your budget.

Wedding Help from the Pulpit

From the Vicar, Brian Rogers who’s ecclesiastical parishes are: Fotheringhay, Warmington, Tansor, Cotterstock and Southwick We had the delight to meet up with the Vicar, Brian Rogers, from Fotheringhay Church who was great in helping us with answering the main questions couples ask about having their wedding in church:

Tell us a little about the history of Fotheringhay Church? Brian: The Church of St.Mary and All Saints, Fotheringhay dates from the 15th century, and is most noted for its links to Richard III who was born in Fotheringhay and Mary Queen of Scots who was executed in Fotheringhay. It’s a magnificent Church with wonderful architecture and is a wonderful setting for a wedding. There is a fascinating connection to history for anyone getting married here. The legal registration of marriages in the England started in 1837 and the wedding register in Fotheringhay was started in 1838 and is still being used today, so you will sign the same register linking you to all that history.

Wedding

Photography When your Big Day is over... the cake is eaten, the flowers have died and the gifts are opened. The lasting memories of your day are the photographs. Here are a few handy tips and hints that can help to enhance those photographs and ensure they are memorable and timeless mementos that you will treasure for many years to come.

1

Okay, no pun intended, but you and your photographer do need to “click” - Make sure that, ahead of time, you meet the photographer who will actually be shooting your wedding, and make sure you feel comfortable with him or her.

2 Engagement Shoots - Engagement shoots are when the future Bride & Groom, accompanied by a photographer, take a trip to a destination in which they feel connected and means something to both of you. This can be a park area or a place by the sea. It may even be the place where the groom proposed or where the couple’s first date took place. It is a romantic and fun day with many memories and I strive to capture them. This also gives the Bride & Groom a chance to see how the photographer works. It helps build a relationship of trust between the photographer and the couple.

3 Lighting - Lighting is key when it comes to flattering and natural images. Think romance! Get creative. If you are having an outdoor reception, placing your dance floor under a tent will make a world of difference. A tent also gives you a structure to hang the small lights in the roof which create a mellow warm background. Bridal Preparation Lighting Bridal preparation is becoming a very popular part of the day and lighting can pay a huge part in making these photos look great. First start by picking a room with enough ROOM; one with lots of natural light. Harsh sunlight however, can be a photographer’s worst enemy as it will bring shadows and squinting eyes!!

72

4 Ceremony rules Ask the registrars, vicar or priests about their rules surrounding photography during the ceremony. Some ban it completely others will only allow photographers to stand in one place. Just let your photographer know, so as to avoid any surprises on the day.

5 Be prepared Be prepared for your day. Practice smiling, even poses if you think it will make you feel more at ease on the day. Discuss a ‘Bad Weather Back Up’ with your photographer and venue to avoid problems if it rains. Here are a few questions you should ask any wedding photographer before you book their services. (And do interview more than one, so you can compare!). Can I see some examples of your work? What style of pictures will you shoot? Will you be the photographer who takes all the pictures? Can you make sure you take this picture? What do we get in the end? Don’t forget to provide your photographer with a list of required photographs before the day and tell everyone who is needed not to slope off to the bar before their photo has been taken. A really important piece of advice for people hiring a photographer is, Make sure that they have relevant insurances, a professional photographer should be covered with public liability and professional indemnity, to cover customers if anything goes wrong. The photographer should be able to produce documents if asked. By Emma Walker – Walkabout Photography

O D O T ’S O D N E H D N A G A T S One of the great things about organising a wedding (which is without a doubt one of the most stressful things you do!) is the light relief you can get from letting someone else organise the stag and hen do’s.
