Behind the scenes I have been told I’ve got to keep the column short and sweet this month, due to our new flannel panel (see below), which tells you all about who we are. I did explain that my life is interesting and there is too much to tell you all, but I was told that if I didn’t, my chocolate would be kidnapped and held to ransom so..... Our Macmillan charity coffee morning was a great success, so thank you to all of you that supported us - we raised over £100! I made a massive carrot cake and a huge pile of flap jack, Heidi made some cup cakes and Naomi did my scone recipe from last month’s City Scene. Have a look at our Facebook pictures. www.facebook.com/thecityscene House update - it is coming along really well. All the

walls we wanted to move are out, and luckily the roof didn’t blow away. The steelwork supporting the new loft conversion is in and the stairs have arrived....! The new windows, from Italy (what would you expect darling?) are ready to be fitted, and next weekend the lecci boy arrives. Then it’s just a plumber I need..... anyone free??? My little nephew, who is now 10 weeks old, weighed in at 15 lb 13 oz this week!- He’s coming to help on the house next month as it’s the BF’s b’day.... 28! Moving on to more interesting news and the October City Scene..... Last month we started our ‘Family Scene’ pages, and this month we are introducing the New Teen Scene, written by our latest recruit, Daniel, plus we have some great ways of spending Halloween and Bonfire night, so check out our What’s On pages 52-55.

Rotary Swim 2010 Werrington Rotary Club is again holding their annual charity swim at Jack Hunt Pool on Sunday, 21st November 2010. Entry is free and every participant will receive a commemorative t-shirt produced for the event. The event is held to raise money for Charity, each team is asked to raise funds for their own and Rotary Charities. This year the Werrington Club is donating money to Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall and the Rudolf Fund as well as other local charities. The Rotary club asks that half of the money collected is sent to Rotary whilst the other half can be retained by each team. School PTA’s, sports clubs and help groups can all benefit.
Last year over £3000 was raised not including money raised by swimmers for their own charities.
Entries may swim in a relay as a team of up to six swimmers or as an individual for up to fifty-five minutes. The idea is to enjoy a swim and raise money for charity.
Rotary Club of Peterborough Werrington Charitable Fund. Charity No.1093836. District 1070. Rotary Club of Peterborough Werrington
Entry Forms can be obtained via www.rotary-peterborough-werrington.org.uk or by sending a SAE to Graham Walker, 28 Melford Close, Longthorpe, Peterborough. PE3 9NG e-mail: graham@walkeruk.demon.co.uk
BLOOMING GREAT RESULT; PETERBOROUGH WINS GOLD
OPENING OF NEW SKATE PARK Young people in Bretton have helped design a state-of-the-art skate park which officially opened on Bretton Park in September. At the start of the project, Peterborough City Council’s recreation team enlisted the help of young people from Crofts Corner playcentre at Bretton and other users of the previous skate ramp, asking what facilities they would like to see at the new skate park. These ideas were then incorporated into potential designs for the new park, with the final layout chosen by the young people. The new facility has been funded by Peterborough City Council, Bretton Parish Council, Big Lottery Fund and the former Department for Children, Schools and Families. It comprises of a skate bowl complete with taco, manual pad ramp, a spine ramp section, two hip ramps and more.
ELITE ATHLETES READY FOR PERKINS GREAT EASTERN RUN The 2010 Perkins Great Eastern Run has attracted some of the running world’s most elite athletes with top runners from as far afield as Kenya coming to the city on Sunday 10 October 2010, to compete in what is expected to be an exciting half marathon. In the men’s race, competitors include Kenyan Edwin Kipkorir, aiming to complete the city course in 62 minutes, Yorkshireman Andrew Pearson, of Longwood Harriers, Birchfield Harriers’ Zac Kihara and Gordon Mugi Maguhu, who won this year’s Robin Hood half marathon. In the women’s race, Genet Measso, of Birchfield Harriers, is predicting a 73 minute finish time. She won the Cardiff half marathon in 2009. City of York runner Becky Penty will be hot on her heels, along with Edinburgh runner Jenny Maclean, winner of the Scottish half marathon, and Sarah Jeriwoo Kiptoo, who was the first lady home in the Robin Hood half marathon. Visit www.greateasternrun.co.uk for information on the course route and race day road closures.
Peterborough has scooped the top Anglia in Bloom award for the first time, recognising the beauty and high maintenance standards of the city’s open spaces. This is the first time Peterborough has won the gold, after receiving a silver gilt award for the last four years. Peterborough also won three special awards. The Green Backyard was named best community project, Southfields School won the best young person’s project in the under 12s category and Peterborough was named best overall city with a population of between 100,000 and 200,000. Grounds maintenance staff from the council’s city services department plays a key role in Peterborough’s consistent success in the competition,

Pensions Vs ISA? I was asked last week why we put any money into pension funds, and not an ISA. For those who don’t have emergency funds set aside, starting off saving in an ISA is probably a better bet, unless you can afford to save more than £10,200 a year (the ISA limit). An exception to this is if your employer is contributing to your pension or offers ‘matching contributions’.
Emergency Department Reception
New City Hospital There are just a few weeks left until Peterborough City Hospital opens to its first patients. The 612-bed, four-storey hospital, on the Edith Cavell Campus at Bretton Gate, will replace Peterborough District and Edith Cavell Hospitals and Peterborough Maternity Unit. The first patients will be welcomed on 15 November 2010. During the course of November and early December all departments from these three sites will transfer to the new City Hospital. To help the transfer move run smoothly, a huge project plan was drawn up that incorporates all the details of transferring three sites into one. This document contains a staggering 9,000 tasks that have to be completed to ensure the move goes without a hitch. Angela Broekhuizen, associate director of the City Hospital project
8
for the Trust said: “This is an amazing project that has required meticulous planning and constant checking to ensure we remain on track to receive our first patients on 15 November 2010. “We have a great project team and relocation staff from all departments within the Trust who are working extremely hard to make sure everyone is ready for the move.” Patients and visitors are now being alerted to the dates when departments will transfer to the new hospital.
IMPORTANT DATES An important date for you to remember is the move of the Accident and Emergency department. People needing emergency treatment from 2am on
OCTOber 2010 | Email: info@scenepublishing.co.uk
Friday 3 December 2010 will need to attend the new Emergency Centre at Peterborough City Hospital.
Saving in an ISA can be efficient and most importantly of all, you have much greater access to your cash. But bear in mind that cash ISA funds could well be losing you money at the moment, due to the (generally) parlous rates of interest being paid by banks and building societies. Have you considered growing a properly constructed Stocks and Shares based ISA, constructed around you? Although there is no tax relief on ISA contributions, the roll up of funds within ISA and pension is free from Capital Gains Tax and the ability to take tax free income from an ISA could be as useful as tax relief on pension contributions. ISA funds may also be grown until you reach Higher Rate tax payer status, at which point they
might be filtered across into a personal pension, allowing you to gain all round. Remember - you cannot touch pension savings until aged 55, and then you are only able to withdraw up to 25% in tax free cash – the balance must be used to purchase an annuity, remain invested or to arrange an income. However, what is right for one person may not be right for another. Personal pensions, invested into the right funds, still offer great benefits and as ever, nothing should be considered unless you first have appropriate and adequate personal and family insurance. See our advert (below) for more information about us and how we can help.
Expectant mums should attend the new Women and Children’s unit at Peterborough City Hospital from 9am on Tuesday 30 November 2010. Outpatients attending regular appointments at any of the three sites will be informed of the date the clinics they attend will transfer to the new hospital site. For a preview of what the hospital looks like inside, visit www. peterboroughandstamford.nhs. uk and click on the ‘City Hospital’ link. Here, you can take a virtual tour of a ward, the Emergency Department and the Women and Children’s area. The camera pans around 360 degrees to give you the complete picture.

Schools fly their Green Flags Five Peterborough school’s have been awarded prestigious Green Flag awards by the international Eco Schools programme. The programme provides schools with a framework to help embed green principles into the heart of school life. There are three award levels, bronze, silver, and the highest level - Green Flag. In order to achieve the Green Flag award schools must meet a number of criteria including establishing a pupil led ‘Eco-Action Team’and incorporating the environment into lessons. A number of Peterborough schools have participated in the Eco Schools scheme: sixteen have achieved bronze, twelve have achieved silver, and now five have achieved Green Flag status. One of the five, St Augustine’s Junior School, has secured the Green Flag award for the fourth time, something which only 120 other schools in England and Wales have managed. Peterborough’s five Green Flag schools: Sacred Heart RC Primary School – achieved the award this year. The Peterborough School (previously known as Peterborough High School) – achieved the award this year. 5 Top Beauty secrets guaranteed to make you glow Us women have been searching high and low for years to find ways to enhance our natural beauty. Here are some tips that every women should be following to make them glow. Vaseline. Not many people realise, but Vaseline is nothing short of a beauty miracle. Apply it to your lips and eyelids for a soft, shiny effect and dab onto eyelashes after makeup removal to prevent them from becoming brittle and breaking. And those split ends? Simply tie your hair into plaits before bed and apply a small amount of Vaseline to the ends. And voila, in the morning you’ll be split end free!

Crest Teeth Whitening Strips Don’t want to pay £££’s to get your teeth whitened, I’ve got the next best thing that will cost you under £40. Available in America but not over here yet are Crest Teeth Whitening Strips. In the kit comes individual packets containing 1 or 2 thin strips coated with the product, simply place on upper and/or lower teeth and wait for 30 min’s then remove, repeat twice daily for 7 days and then see the results! I use them myself and use a kit every 6 months to top up! Some sensitivity can occur, just skip a day then continue. Available from UK online suppliers using Google search or go on eBay for the best deals!
Rehydrate, rehydrate, rehydrate! You’ve probably heard it all before, but water is the simplest way to a more beautiful you. Drinking 6-8 glasses of water a day will keep your skin looking soft, hydrated and young.
Top eyebrow tips Moisturising twice a day is essential. In the morning and evening, massage moisturiser in upwards, circular motions into the skin. This brings nutrients to the skin’s surface and also helps to boost circulation. Again, this helps to rehydrate your skin and prevent wrinkles. Natural ingredients can be a life saver. You don’t need to break the bank to look beautiful, as ingredients such as sea salt can be just as good as expensive brands. Use sea salt to exfoliate the skin and remove dead skin cells in the shower. Alternatively, mix coffee grounds with salt and rub all over the body to exfoliate. Rinse off, moisturise and your skin will be soft and supple. And finally, sleep! Your body needs time to restore itself and take a rest, so you should aim to get at least 8 hours every night. You’ll wake up feeling refreshed and revitalised.

Foundation Brushes! I only recently started using a foundation brush as my last YSL foundation had a built in brush, I got bought a MAC foundation so decided to purchase a brush from No7 as I got one of those £5 No7 vouchers in Boots, and I love it! It makes your foundation application so much smoother, whilst also helping to make your foundation more lasting! Make sure you keep it clean though or it can spread spots!
This season, its eyebrows, eyebrows, eyebrows! In my eyes the bigger the better, okay well maybe not Father Xmas style! My top tip for perfect eyebrows is to give them a good brush from inside the brow to the temple, then get a brown or black (depending on your brow colour) cheap mascara, lightly comb the brush over the brow. This makes the brow hold in shape and looks much more natural than pencil! Mac also has an amazing eyebrow pen, it’s like a felt tip but gives excellent coverage without that clumpy pencil mark. Its quick drying so doesn’t smudge and it’s long lasting! Available from bigger department stores and online: www. maccosmetics.co.uk (RRP £13.50).
Next month look out for my beauty salon treatment of the month review! Add me on my Facebook page: www.facebook.com/BeautyBarbiePeterborough, write any beauty recommendations or questions on my wall. Keep beautiful….

Don’t be shy – give it a try!
Some people hold back from getting fit because they feel self-conscious about their ability or body and want to find an activity they can do on their own, but organised classes and sports clubs can provide you with support and motivation, as well as a chance to make new friends. If you’re interested in football, hockey or other team sports, for example, many local clubs will have several teams of varying abilities, while there are plenty of aerobics or yoga classes specifically designed to cater for beginners. See our useful numbers on pages 12 & 13. There are many activities that can be done by yourself, and require neither technical expertise nor much in the way of equipment or expense - just your willingness to give it a go. You’re never too old to learn to swim, or you can take classes to improve your technique if that’s what’s holding you back. Walking is
a great way to keep fit, so is dancing (either the disco type or traditional Foxtrots) and you get to make some new friends, and of course cycling can also be really beneficial and with all the green wheel routes around Peterborough, you will never tire of place to go.
A few tips for you Walk, don’t drive, to the local shop. If you have a lot to carry, take a small rucksack.
If you have children, walk them to and from school as briskly as you all can manage. Get off the bus or train a stop or two early. This will give you some extra daily exercise - and might even reduce your fare. Take a walk during your lunch hour. Half an hour’s walk after a meal will cut the amount of fat you store by using it to fuel your exercise. Once a week take a longer walk along a completely different route to keep things interesting.

FERRY MEADOWS – Peterborough’s very own city hideaway!
Anna Ruggiero takes a step back and visits Peterborough’s Ferry Meadows to find out why the park is gaining popularity, and, is the place to be for those who enjoy all the benefits the great outdoors can offer. I have always enjoyed visiting Ferry Meadows as it gives you time to relax and gather your thoughts. Whether it is walking the dog in the morning, a lunch time stroll, unwinding after a busy day in the office, or being a little more adventurous and taking part in the many water sports available. Ferry Meadows is spread over 500 acres of lakes, woodland, grassland and meadows and is there for us all to enjoy. The seeds were being sown for the park in 1968 when Peterborough was designated a new town. More than 2, 000 acres of land was set aside to form Nene Park, and Ferry Meadows is in the heart of the park which was handed over to The Nene Park Trust, the charity that now manages the site, in 1988. The lakes at Ferry meadows were formed by the extraction of gravel which formed many of the roads in the city. As well as providing leisure activities, the lakes act as a flood barrier for the city by holding the excess water themselves. One of the many great things about Ferry Meadows is its accessibility for all and everyone. You can sprint round the lakes if you like, or, if like me, you prefer taking things a little more easily, then a gentle stroll will do you just fine. The park is ideal for all ages and all levels of health, and is a great way to meet new people. To do just that you can attend

Another great day being organised by the trust is a woodlands day which is a themed day with woodcrafts, and displays as well as lots more exciting activities. This is a day not be missed and takes place 27th October. The Trust is looking forward to the future of the park and realises that as our city is growing then so must the plans for the park which include a new visitor centre at Ferry Meadows, re-launching the Nene Park Trust website, refurbishing Ferry Meadows Cafe, and improving all signs and information. As well as work that is taking place behind the scenes such as wildlife surveys. Most of the activities on offer at the park are free and a great way to spend time with your family, get close to nature, and be a part of the progress of the park and its future. HEALTHY EATING
Q
I constantly struggle to get my 5 and 7 year old children to eat vegetables. I know how important it is, but it seems the more I try to make them eat them the less they will eat. Do you have any tips to help me?
A
Yes, it is important to eat your 5 a-day and all of the adverts and the government promotion of this puts us all under a bit of pressure. So the first thing to do is take the pressure away, by pushing fruit and vegetables onto your children, you are making a big issue of it, so you need to try and make it fun and use a softer approach. Why not try Sweetcorn? It has a more pleasant taste than most vegetables and can be served with most dishes. If you make stews or casseroles, then you can hide or disguise the taste of vegetables, and soups are even better, as once you liquidise the ingredients they will never know. Also, add beans and lentils, as these count towards your 5 a-day too. If your children are into sports, then speaking to their tutor or coach about teaching them how important eating their 5 a-day is, will make them realise it is not just their parents nagging. Get your children to help with the weekly menu, by giving them some choices of meals for example; Spaghetti Bolognese, Sheperds Pie, Chicken Stew or Stir Fry etc..., and then they feel they have had a say in what they eat, then when you go shopping for the ingredients, let the children put it all in the trolley. This way they have been part of the process and will except what they are given to eat as it has been their choice. Finally drinking 100% fruit juice counts towards your 5 a-day and making fruit smoothies can be fun and healthy. For some more great ideas and information you can log onto www.nhs.uk/change4life
CONSERVE ENERGY
Q A
What are some of the best ways you can conserve energy around the home?
When it comes to energy saving most of us immediately think about using less energy - such as by turning down the heating and running it for less time or by switching off lights and appliances. All good ways to save energy but when it comes to heat the best way to make an impact is to conserve better what heat we create in the first place i.e. insulate. Walls and roofs account for approximately 60% of heat loss in the typical home. The easiest of these to solve is roof heat loss (which is about 25% of total heat loss) as loft insulation is simple to fit, either DIY or by a specialist home insulation provider, and can help prevent huge heat loss which is kind of like pound notes disappearing through your roof all winter. Current guidelines suggest that loft insulation should be 270mm deep and I’m sure most of us have far less than that if we venture up to the loft and check. If you have, or fit, fibre rolls of quilt style insulation it is important to remember not to compress it with boxes, old suitcases or other things we hoard in our lofts, as the air trapped in the fibres creates the insulation and so a compressed fibre layer will not act properly to insulate and save on those winter bills. Walls account for 35% of heat loss in a typical house. Internal or external insulation can be applied to walls but this is often very disruptive or too expensive. Houses with uninsulated cavity walls can benefit from cavity wall insulation that can be blown in through small holes drilled into the outside walls of the property. There are specialist companies that offer this service and the savings to homeowners can be significant. Written by James Westwood of Energy Now, your Solar Power experts www.energynow.co.uk
RENTING PROPERTY
RENOVATING PROPERTY
Q
I’m currently searching online for a property to rent. Some people I’ve contacted have asked me to ‘prove’ I have the funds by doing a money transfer before they’ll even show me the property. Is this legitimate?
A
Never agree to transfer money via a money transfer agency, even to yourself, to prove you can afford deposit and rental payments - it’s more than likely a scam. Citizens Advice Bureaux in England and Wales have had reports of people transferring money to themselves and showing the prospective landlord a copy of the transfer receipt as proof. But when they go to collect the money, it’s gone! When searching for property to rent, you should never part with any money before you’ve viewed the room or property in person and had sight of a contract. If you or the prospective landlord live abroad, offer instead to provide references from previous landlords and other professionals such as a GP or employer who can vouch for you. All landlords must be part of a registered Tenancy Deposit Scheme which protects your deposit. One way to check any prospective landlord is legitimate is to ask for the details of which scheme they’re registered with and check that they are. See www.direct.gov.uk/tenancydeposit for more information. Use a reputable letting agent from the High Street, who is registered with the National Approved Letting Scheme (NALS). Agencies belonging to this scheme have agreed to follow a set of standards which include a complaints procedure.

What are the restrictions when renovating a Grade II Listed house?
There are 500,000 Listed buildings in England and Wales. Listed status is awarded to buildings of special interest which warrant every effort being made to preserve them. Regardless of Grade, Listed status applies to the interior and the exterior, as well as objects or structures fixed to the building and objects and structures within the footprint of the property, present since before 01 July 1948. Any internal or external works of alterations, extension or demolitions which affect the character of the property require ‘Listed Building Consent’. This is over and above any planning permissions required or building regulations that may apply to the proposed work. The first port of call when planning work on a Listed building is the local planning authority for the area in which the property is located. It can advise on further liaison with conservation officers and other permissions if required. Carrying out unauthorised work to a Listed building is a criminal offence. Retrospective enforcement action can also be taken. Seek expert advice before purchase, as along with the pleasure of owning such a property, comes the stewardship of a slice of history.
If you have been affected by a scam or are concerned about the legitimacy of a property you have found online visit your local Citizens Advice Bureau for free, independent, confidential advice: www.adviceguide.org.uk

Raiding the piggy bank... The coalition is to reduce and then stop the government’s contribution to Child Trust Fund (CTFs) accounts. CTFs were designed to give children a financial head start in life with a fund accessible when they reach 18 and there are now around five million active accounts. Up until now, every baby born after 31 August 2002 has received £250 (£500 for low-income households) in the form of a voucher, with youngsters getting a top-up payment from the government (typically £250) when they reached seven. The amount to be contributed at birth is to reduce to just £50 for births on or after 2 August 2010 (£100 for children from low-income households) and is set to cease entirely from early in 2011. The government top-up payments at age seven has ceased for those children that turn seven on or after 1 August 2010.
Q A
What about existing accounts?
Accounts set up for eligible children will continue to benefit from tax-free investment growth. No withdrawals are possible until the child reaches age 18. The child’s friends and family will continue to be able to contribute up to an overall total of £1,200 a year and it will still be possible to move it to another provider. Children born after all the relevant legislation is in place will not be eligible for a CTF account. This appears to mean that the availability of this tax-free vehicle for family investment is withdrawn as well as the government financial contribution. For more information about CTFs generally including any further developments visit www.childtrustfund.gov.uk
WRITING THE BEST CV
Q
After working for the same company for 15 years, I have been made redundant. I have never written a CV before and would really like some tips.
A
The current job market is tougher than ever, and a professionally written CV is the most important factor in getting an interview and on your way to getting a new job. The words curriculum vitae (CV) come from Latin and literally mean “the course of one’s life.” Always write your CV in the first person e.g. “I have” rather than “He has.” Check carefully for inappropriate jargon and substitute more user-friendly words when you can. Ensure that you write about your achievements - Don’t write about things you are not so good at. Always check and double-check your CV or application form for spelling errors and punctuation. Check for common grammatical errors. A good tip is to let a number of people read it to check that you are getting the correct message across. Everyone has their own idea of what makes a great CV, so do take advice. Remember, this is about you and what you and your experince, so do not be shy about what you have achieved, as this is what stands you apart from the rest of the applicants. Once you have got to the interview stage, be confident in knowing that your CV or application form has succeeded in getting you this far. The fact that you have been selected for interview means that you are potentially right for the job.
So good luck, and if you would like more information, help or advice you can log on to www.cvwrite.co.uk

The City Scene office recommends this month’s books Heidi recommends ’61 hours’ (paperback) Lee Child Bantam Books £7.99 Lee Child hits the spot with the character ‘Jack Reacher’ and 61 hours hasn’t disappointed. It’s an icy winter in Dakota and a bus skids, crashing into a gathering storm. Jack Reacher is on the bus, travelling light as always, no possessions and no coat to face the arctic cold. In a nearby small town, a brave woman stands up to sinister forces but she needs help from someone just like Jack to prevent getting to hour zero and her death. You’ll be turning the pages faster and faster as the count-down begins..... Naomi recommends Maths for Mums and Dads (hardcover) Rob Eastaway & Mike Askew Square Peg £9.99 ‘Can you help me with my maths homework?’. Does this question fill you with dread, not for getting the answer right, but for using the ‘new
method’? According to a recent survey, as many as one third of parents are not confident when dealing with the maths homework brought home by their children. As parents, we can often be baffled by modern teaching methods and terms: children are no longer being taught ‘the important old-fashioned stuff’. So grab this guide and dip in and out for your own new maths lesson (no homework necessary) and get yourself up to speed on chunking, partitioning, number lines and the grid method; numbers, decimals and place value; long multiplication and long division, to name just a few. Charlotte recommends The Pursuit of Happyness (paperback) Chris Gardner Harper Collins £8.99 This isn’t a new book, but it is worth
going back sometimes to seeing what you’ve missed in terms of book releases. Some of you may have seen the motion picture of the same name, starring Will Smith and his son Jaden Smith. It a roller coaster of emotions and the book is no different. The story of Chris Gardner is about a down-and-out dad trying to better his family’s life. During his rise to meteoric success, Chris was forced to shelter with his son in toilets, homeless shelters and ‘work’ unpaid in a prestigious stock brokerage firm. It’s an environment suited to trustfund children, rather than a single parent, but that seems to add to the determination in Chris’ persona. Read the book and curl up on a chilly October evening and watch a great story come to life before you.

By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist THE MITSUBISHI Evo is a legendary beast and attracts looks and shouts of admiration from petrolheads wherever you go. That comes as no surprise because the Evolution X is about as understated as a pig in a wig. It is low, wide and oozes aggression. The black muzzle with yawning radiator grill shouts ‘power’ and the massive tailpipes and vents on the bonnet more than hint at the levels of pure performance lurking beneath. The Evolution FQ-330 SST produces a whopping 324 bhp from a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine mated to a four wheel drive system. The engine’s power is distributed to the wheels that can use the clout the most and the

brakes are sensational. All this gives you a sense of unbelievable reassurance when pushing the car to its limits. The FQ-330 drives just like all its other Evo X kith and kin, which is to say it’s eye-wateringly fast. Ok, the interior plastics are a bit cheap looking, but the Recaro bucket seats are just brilliant. It really is an addictive car to be in and the performance never gets boring, though you’ll soon realise there is a cost to the addiction – and that’s the fuel economy. Let’s just say it is best to know where
the petrol stations are in advance if you’re planning a fun long burn off the beaten track. What’s new though is the SST (Sports Shift Transmission) dual-clutch transmission, which makes accessing the FQ-330’s velocity even easier. Push the pedal to the metal and flick through the gear paddles on the steering wheel (or leave it in pure auto mode), and it’ll accelerate to 62mph in 4.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 155mph. It could go faster but Mitsubishi have stuck an electronic speed limiter on the car. While I usually prefer manual
transmissions in sports cars, the SST system really suits the Evo’s insane character, moving through the gears as easily and quickly as the greedy engine will allow. Possibly the most refined engine output and transmission combination in the Evo X range, the FQ-330 SST has been worth the wait. Sparkling performance matched with fingertip control could mean it’s the most rounded Evo X you can buy. But I won’t know for sure until I road test the 360 and the mighty new 400. Watch this space!

Wrap up warm this Winter with this season’s top coats.
snug. Large horizontal stripes in monochrome, as well as checked prints are the most common, but there is plenty of variation out there, you just have to look! Recently, the military trench coat is an item that’s been seen on the likes of anyone worth reading about; an echo of the female-mods of the sixties, the knee-length khaki trench, with optional fur hood, is durable and fashionable, giving any outfit an added punkness and edge. It can be worn with pretty much everything, and adds freshness to girly dresses and prints as well as effortlessly fitting in with skinny jeans and biker boots. Found in the likes of River Island and Topshop, (although vintage shopping is an alternative that may produce a more authentic look) this coat is going to be huge in the coming season. Studded detailing is generally recommended
In the season where sophistication is key, where styling details have been stripped to a minimum, make sure you look for the right shape, fabric and investment pieces to get the most out of your hard-earned money. From blazers to the new trench, from camel to military, the high street has stepped up to the mark with trends that will suit, and flatter, everyone. veryday glamour, contrast the dressed-up blazer with dresseddown accessories. An antithesis of sorts, this look is an anti-climax that saves an outfit from looking too prepared, whilst being versatile enough to wear day or night. A blazer in black, or navy, is the starting point of this look and suits pretty much every shape and size; it can be adapted to fit the season’s top trends, as well: invest in some shoulder pads
the revival of tweed is the best thing to happen to fashion. It’s feminine, it’s classy and the cuts and styles are so varied that anyone can look like a fifties movie siren. Many high-street stores have stocked up on the tweed coat, a premonition to its future success, and now is the perfect time to buy; knee length coats are perfect for the tall and slender, as the length helps elongate the body whilst the pattern proportionalises the features and draws all the
to evoke a military feel along with some gold buttons and gold detailing to stir up a nautical take on things, then team with a frilly white blouse, black cotton bow around the neck and skinny jeans and you’re good to go to the office, or for a night out with the girls. Many people often think that ‘smart clothing’ has to make you look as if you’re going to a funeral, but smart doesn’t necessarily have to mean black so channel Coco Chanel and embrace tweed. A nod to the bygone days when women’s hemlines were lower and glamour was a way of life,

attention to the centre point of the body to prevent you from looking too gangly. If you happen to be shorter, and curvier, then a cropped tweed jacket is more suited to you; cropped sleeves will stop you from being swamped in the fabric and will focus the eye line on the top half of your body, making you appear taller and more in proportion. As for colour schemes, grey and black is the duo that is dominating the shop floors as it is adaptable to most outfits and looks both professional and sexy, but for the more girly among you, then pink and grey is the most feminine palette and also suits most skin tones. For practicality and style, the
blanket coat is for you; it’s like having a duvet day in public, and you still get to look amazing! Oasis and French Connection have produced some fabulous versions of the
blanket coat this season, and it appears that the ‘waterfall cut’ is the most becoming, as the waist-length back and flowing sides conjures the appearance of length in the body and yet remains fluid enough to produce “curves”: a item of clothing that addresses top body issues and hides them beautifully. This coat also comes in a wrap-around design, which again hides any body blues you may have and keeps you
for the under-30’s, as it may risk a “mutton dressed as lamb” comment, but the military coat is suitable for everyone. If you happen to be older, then a shorter cut coat with brown detailing may be more flattering, and as always, a faux fur trim is a perfect accomplice to the look. So now you’ve got the style sorted, what about the colour? Cream is a good alternative to winter white, plus goes with the autumnal tones of camel, browns and greens that are essential this season. But in general, as long as you stick to the trio of key colours, cream, camel and brown, then you’re guaranteed to be the epitome of sophistication this winter. Now, all you have to worry about is what you wear underneath!...

Pet Urination can be Painful
paddy
Ever noticed your pet crying, straining or crouching in an unusual position while passing urine? Well these are, as well as blood stained urine and frequent urination, the classical symptoms of Cystitis. Any signs of these symptoms need to be addressed towards your vet. Cystitis is also known as FLUTD (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease) and basically means that your cat has a disease of the lower urinary tract. It is defined as the inflammation of the urinary bladder, usually associated with bacterial infection. It is quite common in cats and dogs. Bacterial infection of the bladder is normally treated with antibiotics and the more natural route to take in this case is to try Natures Sunshine’s Silver Shield. Silver Shield is a very effective natural antibiotic and antiseptic for dispersing viruses, bacteria and fungi. Silver has been used for centuries for medicinal use and is coming back as

Cuckolded, worn-out and feared, Andrew Crocker-Harris is a senior classics teacher at a prominent English public school and is being forced into semiretirement because of illness. Disliked by pupils and fellow teachers alike and harassed by both his vicious wife and a condescending Headmaster, The Browning Version is the story of how ‘The Crock’ finds redemption in a small act of kindness. His relationship with one pupil changes the way that he thinks about his fellow human beings and allows him to find the determination to stand up to those who

Local music Fenech-Soler is a local band; Kings Cliffe based, who formed around 2006 and have recently released their debut album of the same name through ‘B-Unique’ , their own record label. The album includes Stop and Stare play-listed at Radio 1 in May, and reached the Top 10 of the Dance and Indie singles chart. Game of the month Now, we all know of the game Halo... And if you don’t, I recommend that you go out this instant, buy an Xbox and the latest edition of Halo!
Halo: Reach is an upcoming firstperson shooter video game and takes us back in time with a prequel to the original sci-fi hit ‘Halo: Combat Evolved.’ In this episode we are transported back to the year 2552, where we join Team Noble at the dawn of their epic battle to save the human race from a powerful and sinister alien collective known as ‘the covenant’. Halo: Reach puts players in the shoes of Noble-6, a super soldier operating alongside a squad of legendary Spartan fighters at the height of their military strength. A must have for any game collection!
YouTube Phenomena This month I’m going to recommend videos that Ray William Johnson has uploaded onto YouTube. If I had to describe it you in a sentence, I’d have to say, It’s like ‘You’ve been framed’, but actually funny! He uploads two videos every week, usually consisting of three or four hilarious videos, usually with commentary over them, making them twice as funny. I can also recommend this to all ages as the bad language that is used has

Gadget mad…..for Apples… New iPod Nano. Apple’s insanely popular dinky noisemaker gets a radical makeover. Gone is the click wheel, replaced with a multi-touch enabled, capacitive touch screen that you’ll be using to navigate the allnew interface. New iPod Touch. The iPod touch was pretty much an iPhone without the ‘phone’ part, and Apple has updated the touch to continue this tradition. The touch now features the same cornea-melting Retina Display you see on the iPhone 4, as well as a bunch of new components on the inside, a front-facing camera for FaceTime calls, and a camera on the back. But why is that rear camera such a low resolution?

Looking for new shoes? COMFORT and chic are side-byside in this year’s autumn and winter styles at city shoe store Footprints. Owner James North is a regular visitor to shoe shows across the UK and Europe to keep up with the latest trends and these visits have influenced the styles on the shelves at the 10 Westgate, Peterborough, store. James says: “You’ll notice a lot of blacks, greys and purples – plus flat shoes and small heels, ballerina styles, brogues, court shoes and boots.” Much of the footwear on the shelves is exclusive to Footprints, with the ranges featuring Van Dal, Easy B, Hotter, Rieker, Tamaris, FitFlop and slippers by Moshulu. James has witnessed the styles which will catch the eye of the 3060 years age range this autumn and winter and this is reflected at Footprints, with particular emphasis on the 50-plus shoe buyer. “Shoes and boots are featuring stud work for the new seasons. There are low boots and knee-high boots and casual boots for young mums will have a refined ‘biker’ look.” And ladies with special footwear needs will not have to compromise
fashion thanks to the presence of Van Dal and Easy B at Footprints. Easy B specialise in EE, 4E, 6E and 8E width fittings. Young mums looking for comfort will find plenty of appeal from German manufacturers Tamaris, while the FitFlop ‘workout while you walk’ technology so popular with their summer styles is now encompassing boots for autumn and winter. Footprints is open seven days a
week – 9am-5pm, Monday-Saturday, and 11am-3pm on Sundays – and is a member of the Society of Shoe Fitters, an organisation pledged to ensuring the shoe industry gives the best possible help to the public with shoe fitting, foot care and shoe buying.

Scene Family Well the summer holidays seem like a distant memory as we’re marching through the school term. Back to book bags, lunch bags, water bottles and a great long list of important dates coming up at school. A worry for any parent is bullying, whether in or out of school. We’ve got some advice and information for you about how to deal with bullying. Our friends at Riverford Organics have sent us a great recipe this month for Chocolate and Courgette Cake...unusual but it works! At the end of half term we have the double delight of Halloween and Firework night.....apple bobbing, trick or treat and fancy dress time. I’ll leave you a few tips and then that’s my cue for a girlie weekend away! It’s an annual event for me and the lovely ladies – I’ll fill you in next month!

Halloween food and treats Children are usually quite happy with a simple spread – they are so hungry and excited they often miss taking in all the detail you have slaved over. Sandwiches can be made more interesting with cookie cutters; these ones are available from Lakeland in Peterborough.
Ghosts from meringues are simple, but yummy. You can always keep a few back and have a lovely pudding with fruits too. Meringue making is simple..... For the meringues 4 free-range eggs ½ tsp white wine vinegar
58
240g/8½oz caster sugar (TOP TIP – I use golden caster sugar for a light brown finish that has a slightly chewing texture) Preheat the oven to 150C/300F/Gas mark 2. Separate the egg yolks from the whites, setting the yolks aside to use for another recipe (such as creme brulee or custard). In a clean bowl, whisk the egg whites until peaks begin to form. Add the vinegar and continue to whisk. Add the sugar, a little at a time, whisking the eggs constantly, until all the sugar has been used up and the eggs are white, stiff and glossy Prepare a baking tray by lining it with non-stick baking parchment. Spoon out the mixture into small peaks at widely spaced intervals onto the paper. Reduce the temperature of the oven to 140C/275F/Gas mark 1 then place the meringues into the oven for ONE hour. TOP TIP - After an hour, turn off the oven and leave the door slightly ajar.

I can’t recall talking about courgettes and chocolate in the same sentence before, but this recipe made me do just that. Chocolate is usually a sure fire hit with the children, but courgettes often have to adopt a disguise to get past them. Give this cake a whirl…. just don’t let on about the courgettes straight away!
Chocolate courgette cake
This gradually reduces the heat and so helps the meringues to dry out Store the meringues in an airtight container if you’re not using them straightaway. Cupcakes with gooey orange and green icing, draped with black webs will be gone in a flash!
By Jane Baxter, Riverford Field Kitchen Taken from the Riverford Farm Cook Book 120g softened unsalted butter 125ml sunflower oil 100g caster sugar 200g soft brown sugar 3 eggs, lightly beaten 130ml milk 350g plain flour 2 tsp baking powder 4 tbsp cocoa powder 450g courgettes, peeled and finely grated 1 tsp vanilla extract Put the butter, sunflower oil and both sugars in a bowl and beat together until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs and then the milk. Sift the dry ingredients together and fold them into the mixture. Stir in the courgettes and vanilla, then spoon the mixture into a 20x35cm baking tin lined with baking parchment. Place in an oven preheated to 190°C and bake for 35-45 minutes, until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean. Cut into squares whilst still warm.
Bullying Bullying can happen to anyone at any age. With the new school term, we are more aware of bullying of children, but particularly in the transition to a secondary school or college it becomes more apparent. Knowing what bullying is and how you can take action, empowers you to make important decisions. Most schools will have policies and possibly peer groups to help combat bullying. There are local and national organisations that can also provide you with a listening ear or a website from which to get support. Peterborough City Council website has information on bullying, in conjunction with Peterborough Safeguarding Children Board

Ryan’s Premier League Preview
Becks- Is it really over?? So the line under the mess in South Africa for England has been well and truly drawn and I’m certainly not going to complain about that. Yes, questions needed to be asked, and no, they’ve not all been answered, but 3 wins from 3, 9 goals scored and just 2, (an og & unstoppable strike) conceded, even the most disgruntled fan should admit it’s been a decent response from players and management. Probably one of the things to cause the biggest stir since the so called ‘new era’ began, is the comments made by much criticized manager Fabio Capello in regards to David Beckham’s future (or lack of ), in playing again for the national side. In a TV interview filmed prior to England’s friendly with Hungary in August, he was asked if Beckham was in his plans, Capello said: “No, David is a fantastic player but I think we need new players for the future.” Since then the Italian has apologised to the man himself for the way the news broke and for not telling the 115 cap icon himself. He’s also backtracked somewhat on the subject and has now insisted that “the door is open to all players” to play in his side. Now the question is, have these fresh comments been said by Capello genuinely, or are they a way to get everyone onside, after all, retiring a national treasure of Beckham’s stature without even letting him know could be seen as treason by some! Let’s look at the facts. These two have previous. Back in

PETERBOROUGH TOWN SPORTS CLUB
2007 Beckham announced that in the July he was leaving Europe to live the American dream and sign for La Galaxy. The then, Real Madrid manager, a certain Capello, publicly told a packed press conference that he would never pick Beckham again only for the former Man Utd star to change the Italians mind with his incredible work rate and attitude. Not only that, Madrid won their 1st La Liga title in 4 years and Becks played a major role in snatching the trophy back from arch rivals Barcelona. So will he be able to do it again? Sure at 35 he’s no spring chicken anymore and the horrible Achilles rupture he sustained while on loan at AC Milan in March, would end many a player aged 30+, high level career, mentally if not physically. David Beckham is not any normal 30+ player though. It seems that whenever his back is against the wall his desire, hunger and incredible talent come to the fore even more than normal. He’s had some massive highs in his 18 year career but nobody can dispute the lows he’s had to overcome too, the sending off at France 98 and the following abuse he had to endure everywhere he went, probably being the most infamous one. Many believed his dropping by then England boss Steve Mclaren was the end, it wasn’t! Many believed the move to the U.S was too, it wasn’t! Oh yes, if David Beckham does manage to wear those 3 lions on his chest for England again, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit….. Don’t forget to email me your views on ryan@ semplesoccer. co.uk & visit www. semple-soccer. co.uk to read my responses.
The cricket season is now over and we need to get the overcoats out, as if we have not needed them lately anyhow. The season ended in disappointment for the two Saturday sides as they failed to achieve their goals not by their performances but due to transgressions against the regulations. The first team did very well to catch perennial league winners Finedon and tie with them on points. Unfortunately they finish second as they have lost one game less. Even more unfortunate, or careless, was the fact that they were docked two points for slow over rates which ultimately cost them the league. If that is a sad story then that of the second X1 is even worse. They led their league, Division 3, for most of the season but a series of draws and a hammering by eventual league winners, Towcester, saw the drop to second. This was OK as they only needed to finish second to get promoted and with two games to go had this well in hand. Their penultimate game was against the league’s whipping boys and they duly whipped them. Unfortunately a player who had played regularly on Sundays was selected for that game but club officials did not cotton on to the fact that he was not registered for the Saturday league and they were docked all 27 points they gained in that game. This was too much to make up in the last week and they were finally just 6 points behind Stoney Stratford who get promoted in second place. The only consolation was that nobody managed to make a pig’s ear on Sundays and that team won the Rutland League. What could have been one of the best seasons ever has mainly ended in disappointment. Hockey leagues for men and women start at the end of September. Hopes are high, particularly for the men, and we hope to report on a good start next time. Squads have been selected and there seems to be more depth in the club than for many years. Pre-season has gone well and we need to make sure that mistakes such as those perpetrated by the cricketers are avoided. The squash season soon stars and we have two teams entered in the Cambs league, for the first time for many years, and five in the Peterborough League. There will be league squash at Bretton Gate most nights during the season so the club will be busy. That’s all for now but hopefully my next report will be a little more upbeat!!
If you would like any information about the club, contact Peter Lambert on 01733 262202 or peter.ptsc@btinternet.com
