Behind the scenes O M G !!! We have a house!!!! On Wednesday 28th of July, we went to our new gaff to get the keys!!! Very exciting and mega stressful at the same time. I was on the phone to at least 4 different people in the space of 10 minutes, everything finally went through! So at 5.30 after going to Morrison’s for several bottles of champers and glasses, because everything, as you know, is packed in a container, we went to our new home and the celebrations began. From then on, it has been work, work, work! We have gone from a few minor alterations to a massive refurb. My Ace boyfriend has totally gutted the house and it is now a mere shell. At this very minute, I have all the long and bendy parts of my body crossed, (well parts that should be long and bendy, if it weren’t for the fact I was so round... OH, the DIET... back to that in a minute) cause if there was a very small gust of wind... I fear the roof would fly off! There is nothing between the upstairs and the roof, to make way for the new load bearing timbers - and not because of the size of my behind, like the unfunny people at HQ said. So much for being in for Christmas (Sorry I said the word). Right... The DIET, the new PCMP is not quite going to plan. Due to all the very hard work at the house I have needed all the nourishment I can possibly obtain. That includes a regular chocolate bar a day to keep the energy levels high, so as you can imagine the inches haven’t dropped off as previously planned, but even more disturbing is the fact that I have worked my little Birkenstocks off and even with the “normal” for me anyway, consumption of all things sweet, I still managed

Peterborough Schools Celebrate Exam Success
THEY’RE BACK! Deafblind UK Aerobathon instructors Mark Gordan, Fitness2Health and Sonia Cullington, Wow Fitness, are back once again for the Aerobathon raising funds for Deafblind UK!
Students throughout Peterborough have achieved huge success in both A-level and GCSE exams. In the city, more than 100 A-level passes achieved at the new A* grade. The national overall pass rate rose very slightly by 0.1 per cent from 97.5 per cent to 97.6 per cent. The best ever GCSE results for the second year running were also achieved as the number of young people gaining five A* to C grades including maths and English rose again. The percentage of pupils gaining five or more A* to C grades including maths and English increased by 5.4 per cent to 46.2 per
cent. The number of pupils gaining five or more A* to C grades was even greater this year, rising to 73.9 per cent which is a 12 per cent increase on last year’s results. Peterborough City Council’s executive director of children’s services John Richards said:
“These results show sustainable improvement which is very important for us and for young people. Good GCSE results are a gateway to work, apprenticeships, diplomas and A-levels. These results demonstrate true partnership between the local authority and our schools.”

GO-AHEAD GIVEN FOR ORMISTON BUSHFIELD ACADEMY Plans for £20 million new premises for the Ormiston Bushfield Academy have been approved by the government; just one month after spending on the national Building Schools for the Future programme was suspended. The Department for Educations announcement on the 6th August means that construction should commence later this year with completion expected in summer 2012. The former Bushfield Community College became an academy with sponsorship from Ormiston Trust in September 2009. The construction project will permit pupil numbers to increase from 700 currently to 950

in the new premises. Plans for the Ormiston Bushfield Academy also include a library and space for centres catering for young people and early years. “Everyone has worked extremely hard to bring the scheme forward and contractor, Kier, has even continued its preliminary project work in the hope that we would receive the go-ahead. Academy Principal Eric Winstone added: “I’m delighted that it’s all official. We’re in a very small group of 77 schools to have received approval. We now look forward to delivering superb new buildings for the local community.”

Retirement talk The government is abolishing the rule forcing pensioners when to purchase an Annuity. In doing so, it will re-write the rules governing buying a pension - but is it right for you? Currently, you can use your pension fund to buy a flexible income each year. But because your fund remains invested and as there is no guarantee to future performance and value, this Drawdown arrangement is known as an unsecured pension (USP). Or you may buy a set lifetime’s income (an Annuity). At age 75 – age 77 from 22 April 2010 to 06 April 2011 – people in Drawdown must move to alternatively secured pension (ASP). A main difference between USP and ASP is that if someone dies under USP there is a 35% charge on drawn down funds whereas under ASP the charge rises to an eye watering 82%. Under the proposed new rules this charge will move to 55%. However, there are other important differences. Drawdown income is limited according to the annual income that may be bought by an Annuity. The maximum that can be taken in any one year is 120% of what the same pension fund would have bought as an Annuity. A danger is that poor investment returns combined with drawing too much income early in retirement means that when it comes to buying an Annuity later on, the fund is too small to
live off. An Annuity provides a set income for life. Your money is invested (in low-risk bonds, gilts etc), but low interest rates and increasing life expectancy mean Annuity rates are at an all-time low. But because to beat Annuity rates Drawdown money may still be exposed to riskier investments, it represents a riskier option. However, Drawdown could buy not only more pension but also valuable time before Annuity rates improve. Those in Drawdown avoid being locked into a poor Annuity rate, they retain control over their income and investments, and gain an opportunity to grow their pension fund further before they buy an Annuity. Investing in funds, shares and so on might also deliver higher returns. However, the fact remains that Drawdown is potentially an expensive and complex proposition and presents a risk for those who have enough funds to consider Drawdown but not quite enough money to afford to make any mistakes. If you are about to enter retirement, or wish to plan for it, we offer a completely Independent perspective. For a complimentary and obligation free consultation in Peterborough, please contact Alastair Rush on 01572 768879.

Eventus – the centre for business and innovation The brand new Eventus building is now complete and the doors are open! I went along to have a tour of the build- ing and find out what it had to offer, and I must say, I did not expect my jaw to drop on the floor – saying ‘it had the WOW factor’, was the understatement of the year! The business and innovation centre located in Market Deeping was completed to the highest specification to include a wind turbine and an underground water harvesting system.
Extra sup- port and networking opportunities will be available. The fully managed centre offers you a fantastic working environment in comfortable, modern surroundings with convenient breakout areas on each floor.
The contemporary design of the building carries on throughout the whole interior too. As you walk up the steps to the revolving door to the stunning, large reception area, that is profession- ally manned at all times, and has wi-fi, plasma screen and seating, you get an immediate feel that this is not just any workspace style office building. The centre has 36 individual office suites offering the ideal working envi- ronment. 6 of these suites are incubation suites for new, or businesses under 12 months old. They offer the opportu- nity to take the next step in an afford- able, professional manner.

Help for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Sufferers
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) affects one in four women of childbearing age. Many sufferers are unaware they have the condition because it is often misdiagnosed as Pre-menstrual Stress (PMS). PCOS is a hormonal imbalance linked to insulin resistance and is thought to be caused by the ovaries failure to produce the correct balance of hormones. Symptoms can include weight gain, irregular/non-existent periods, fertility problems, acne, excess hair, fatigue, depression, mood swings, breast, abdominal and joint pain, dizziness, fainting and cravings for carbohydrates. Certain medication prescribed to treat PCOS symptoms can deplete the body of essential vitamins. Research by Dietcare found that weight gain is a real problem for PCOS sufferers as they have a different metabolism to none sufferers. There is no cure for PCOS, but sufferers can dramatically reduce their symptoms by making diet and lifestyle changes. Standard diets do NOT work long term for PCOS

sufferers; they need a tailored plan to suit them individually. Organic food is strongly advised but if this is not possible, washing fruit and vegetables in a solution of vinegar and water (1part vinegar to 12 parts water) then rinsing well in filtered water can help. Processed foods and ‘ready meals’ should be avoided because of the additives. Canned drinks lined with aluminium should be omitted; use glass containers for drinking, stay clear of drinks in plastic bottles and avoid microwaving food in plastic containers. Dietcare’s unique PCOS weight management course has helped thousands of sufferers lose weight, reduce unpleasant symptoms and even overcome fertility problems. Since the PCOS launch in 2002
Dietcare specially trained diet advisors have helped 297 women conceive, naturally, by offering oneto-one tailored diets, motivation and counselling. Online support is also available. Dietcare’s PCOS book “The Road to Recovery” is out soon. Magic Cure
Wouldn’t it be fantastic if there was a magic formula that prevented and cured physical or mental illness? Well there is..... and it comes in the form of exercise! Everyone knows that exercise prevents many fatal illnesses such as heart disease and also prevents conditions such as arthritis from worsening. Participation in a regular weight training programme increases bone density and joint suppleness and it has also been proven that exercise can be a beneficial treatment for mental illness, such as depression, due to the release of “happy hormones” (technical term endorphins) So, it’s simple - if you want to lose weight, look and feel great, prevent illness and meet new people, get in the gym today. As the quest for achieving that “high” is getting greater, all you need is one hour, three times a week, with a mix

A smooth way towards five a day....
Juicing seemed like a trend a few years ago, but its here to stay as a sensible and easy way to have fruit and vegetables as part of your daily diet. Juicing fresh yourself is the best way as store bought juices don’t contain the same nutrient content because they have been processed to enhance their shelf life. Juicing fruit and vegetables provides you with an easy to digest source of vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidents and enzymes. It’s also fun and a great way to use up those few odd pieces of fruit lying around. Don’t worry too much about quantities – you’ll get the hang of the balance of apples versus berries versus kiwis etc., according to your tastes.

PETERBOROUGH MARKET WHERE OLD TRADITIONS MEET NEW TRENDS
Here Anna Ruggiero reports on what makes Peterborough City Market so unique. Peterborough Market is much a part of our history in the city as the cathedral and the aging building are. The city was granted a charter to have a market in 972AD and the local people were able to enjoy the pleasures of a live cattle market. It has been trading in its present format for well over 30 years. The city is ever-changing, with new office blocks, the arrival of fresh high street retailers and, not forgetting, the giant Tesco’s on the outskirts. However, trade at the market is still good, as local people, it seems, will always value the hustle and bustle that only a city market can offer. There is nowhere else where you can listen to lively banter between stall holders and customers, not to mention a gem or two that can be found at one of the many antique stalls. The quality of the locally sourced produce and the many stalls offering household goods gives customers choice, value and that unique personal touch, which is lacking from many of the larger stores. Peterborough boasts a mix of cultures that offers diversity, different trends and cuisines. The market represents this in every way, from Asian delicacies to a fully stocked Polish deli, there really is something for each and every culinary need!
32
September 2010
I spoke with Amanda Franklin, who works as part of the communications team for the city and she proudly told me that there are stall holders still trading at the market who were then when she was a child. “I used to visit the market every week with my mum when I was a child, I remember Woodland Butchers, the pet stall, the cobblers and the haberdasheries stall. I am delighted to see that these stalls are still here.” It is certainly a gem of the city and one that is being encouraged everyday by regular customers as well as the many visitors the city. Another fond visitor of the market is Peterborough resident and budding artist Jane Fletcher. Jane has been visiting the market for over 14 years. “I absolutely adore the material stall where I can find an array of beautiful patterns and bright colours which are perfect when making my fancy dress costumes. The choice is exceptional and it’s always such good value for money.” The city market is a great way to support local businesses and to turn your weekly shopping trip into an enjoyable experience.... and save money too! Property Law with ANB Law
SELLING YOUR PROPERTY
What is a property lease? A lease or tenancy agreement is a legally binding contract between two or more parties and generally relates to a property.. A well drafted document will normally set out how parties would deal with each other during a given situation.
How accurate do property particulars have to be? Estate agents who are selling, leasing or letting any land or property have to be very accurate and certainly cannot make false claims. As well as complying with the codes of practice from professional bodies like the National Association of Estate Agents and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, any professional involved in presenting property has to adhere to the Property Misdescriptions Act which came into effect in the early 1990s. It is a criminal offence to make a claim which is untrue or cannot be substantiated and individuals or firms who do this are subject to prosecution. The Act is comprehensive when it comes to describing property and covers elements such as measurement and sizes, availability of services facilities or amenities and aspect, view, outlook or environment. Estate agents must be mindful of the Act when it comes to all aspects of marketing a property as it applies to verbal and written descriptions as well as photographic representation When it comes to brand new homes, you will notice that caveats accompany artist’s impressions or computer generated images. Compliance with the Act is easier with homes which are already built. There is leeway for personal judgment and subjectivity in descriptions as long claims made can be proved. But estate agents often need to temper the vendors’ enthusiasm when it comes to descriptions, as it is incumbent upon the agent to overrule the vendor who describes views as ‘very fantastic’.
Q A Q A
Does it have to be in writing?
No. It does not need to be in writing. However, there are certain circumstances, when it does. It is highly advisable that any such contract is in writing and all of the agreed terms are incorporated in the document. Failing to do this, there is strong possibility of disputes between the parties and even the contract being declared as void by the court.
Q A
How do I agree or otherwise negotiate terms of the lease? Before agreeing any terms, you need to be clear as to what your own requirements are, what your financial circumstances and business needs are. It always helps if you have a professional who can help you, and whilst a professional will charge for his/ her expertises, the fee is generally worth paying for, as an accountant, surveyor or a solicitor with relevant expertise can help you to strike a good deal.
Q A
Who should pay for the legal fees? There are number of variations. Each party can be asked to pay their own legal costs. The landlord may want the tenant to pay its legal costs or even may be willing to pay tenant’s legal costs. It is all about market conditions, location and state of the property. Whatever you do and whoever pays, always put a cap on the maximum amount you would agree to pay. If you do not, you may well find yourself paying for a lot more than you had bargained for.

FLYING HIGH
Q
There seem to be so many things that could potentially affect my holiday this summer – whether they be airline strikes or freak weather conditions. What are my rights if my flight gets delayed or cancelled?
A
The existing legislation applies to all flights departing from or flying to a European Union airport via an EU airline. If your flight is cancelled or changed within 14 days of your journey, for reasons other than ‘extraordinary circumstances’ (see below), then you have the right to a refund or alternative transportation, as well as compensation. You can claim up to €600 depending on the notice of cancellation, your flight distance and how much delay you suffer. Since November 2009 you could also be entitled to compensation, as well as meals, drinks, two phone calls (or emails, faxes etc) and accommodation if necessary, if your flight is delayed. If your flight is delayed or cancelled due to ‘extraordinary circumstances’ such as extreme weather, strikes or security risks, you won’t be entitled to compensation. The airline should book you onto the next available flight, or offer a refund if your flight is delayed by more than 5 hours, but only if you decide not to travel. You may be entitled to receive catering, communication and accommodation assistance if your flight is delayed for a number of hours or eventually cancelled. If you are on a package holiday, the travel company must follow arrangements set out in the travel brochure to cover delays. If they don’t, you may be able to claim a refund and/or compensation. The Civil Aviation Authority website offers more info at: www.caa.co.uk. If you believe you are entitled to compensation but the airline or tour operator denies responsibility you should see an experienced adviser, for example, at a Citizens Advice Bureau. Energy Now
PET PROBLEM
Is it right that I will only be able to buy Low Energy light bulbs in future? Also, are there Low Energy alternatives for spotlights?
Is your pet starting to show signs of slowing? Is your pet not as active as before? Or is your pet finding it hard to get up after sitting or lying down? If so, then this could be the result of Arthritis.
Q A
Yes, traditional (incandescent) bulbs are being phased out nationwide between now and January 2011, so make the change now and reap the rewards of lower lighting costs. Lighting and appliances account for approximately 25% of your domestic electricity bill, so take a look around your home and think about switching those greedy old bulbs to modern efficient ones as soon as you can. Low Energy light bulbs last up to 10 times longer than traditional bulbs and use less than 25% of the electricity. Plus they don’t cost the earth anymore either. One 15watt Low Energy bulb, giving the same light as a traditional 60watt bulb would save a massive £7.39* a year if used on average only 3 hours per day. So it is time to start counting up those old bulbs and thinking about the savings that you could make. *(electricity at £0.15/ kw/h) Also limit the use of spotlights and energy hungry halogen spotlights. Each individual spotlight can use the same energy as 5 Low Energy lamps; Fit lower wattage versions or replace them with ultra low energy LED spotlights. Simple things you can do: T urn off any lights whenever you leave a room empty. Always have the lowest consumption energy saving bulbs fitted to the lights that are the most heavily used (nightlights or lights left on while the home is empty). Keep light bulbs clean as dirty bulbs will give off less light. Energy Expert, James Westwood of Energy Now www.energynow.co.uk
Q A
Essentially, a pets joint should show a smooth fluid motion when walking. If the joint judders or clicks in motion then there is a problem. Typically, when we refer to joint problems we class this as Arthritis. Effectively, Arthritis is an inflammation of the joint. Osteoarthritis is the destruction of your pet’s cartilage. When this occurs, the bony structures begin to rub against one another causing pain and discomfort. Likewise with Rheumatoid arthritis this an autoimmune disease triggered by a virus that attacks and causes inflammation of the joints. With Osteoarthritis the ageing process is clearly the biggest contributor towards this debilitating disease. Premature ageing is a result of toxin build up in the animal’s body as a result of poor diet and poor environmental conditions. If the toxins build up is too much then the liver will transfer the toxins and store them within the animal’s joints. The toxins will then slowly react with the joint cartilage and synovial fluids resulting to inflammation. Of course there are certain breeds of animal that are prone to joint problems through heredity. Certainly those breeds that suffer heredity wise from this disease should really go on a preventative maintenance course. A herbal supplement is recommended in dealing with the problem and also ideal for those animals already suffering from the disease. It is also strongly recommended to look into and, if so, change the animal’s food diet as well as go on the herbal supplement course until the condition subsides. What we recommend Alfalfa is recommended for animals who already suffer from arthritis as it acts as a blood purifier to eliminate toxins away from the joint. Joint problems cannot be helped if there are toxins present. Everflex is ideal for the structural and skeleton system and offers more of a holistic approach for seeking real healing. It will restore health to joints by lubricating the joint, increase
shock absorption. Conventional treatment is to use a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that merely masks the pain but does not help the underlying problem. TRAVEL ADVICE
Q
Whist on holiday and I have a complaint or I am not happy about service, food, amenities or my room for example, I am never sure what or when to say something. Can you advise me of the best course of action.
A
If you have any issues / problems whilst you are away it is always best to raise the problem with the management of the hotel or resort that you are staying at as soon as possible and give them the opportunity to rectify things. If you have no success with the hotel management then you should raise the issue with the local representatives of the company that you booked through and then finally if you still are not getting satisfactory results contact the operator in the UK (they should all provide a 24hour emergency number). The important thing is not to wait until you get home before complaining as things cannot be sorted post the event and any claims you may have will be less valid for not following this course of action. Also, waiting until you get home could potentially spoil your holiday and will only adds stress to a time where you should be enjoying yourself and relaxing.

New Audi A3 Cabriolet TFSI
PROS ‘N’ CONS Fun Economical Strong engine Image
By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist THE SMALLEST capacity petrol engine ever to power an Audi will help A3 Cabriolet drivers feel they’re doing their bit for the environment this year. The new A3 Cabriolet 1.2 TFSI has replaced the 1.6-litre MPI model, and uses turbo charging to more than match its output. It boosts combined fuel economy by 9.2mpg to 49.6mpg, and drops CO2 output by 35g/km to 132g/ km. That’s pretty remarkable, but what’s even more impressive is that it is quicker and has a higher top speed. Linked to a six-speed manual gearbox, the A3 Cabriolet 1.2 TFSI can reach 62mph from rest in 12.2 seconds, and continues to a top speed of 118mph. That’s an increase of 0.3 seconds and 4mph over the 1.6MPI unit. The engine generates the same 105 PS power output as the 1.6-litre unit it replaces yet it also has an increase in torque over its predecessor. This petite but impressively robust performer can be
Small boot
combined in the A3 Cabriolet with either standard, Sport (on test here), or S line specification. Standard versions feature a generous equipment list that includes 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning and a semi-automatic hood operation.
FACTS Max speed: 118 mph 0-62 mph 12.2 seconds Combined mpg: 49.6 Engine: 1.2 TFSI Power: 105 PS Torque: 175Nm between 1,500 and 4,100 rpm CO2: 132 g/km Price: 19,985
The Sport version that Audi lent me was a lovely little number swathed in rather elegant grey/blue metallic paintwork. It combined features such as larger 17-inch alloy wheels, sports suspension and sports seats with a fully automatic hood. The car is refreshingly easy to drive and the convertible roof can be operated with a simple touch of a button. A comfortable driving position is effortless to achieve and the car never feels sluggish - in fact it feels as though it

gets from 0-62mph much sooner than the 12.2 seconds figure Audi suggests. The A3 even had enough space for my two little children in the back. Despite only having two doors, the front seats slide forward, allowing ample room to lean in and secure the child seats to their mountings. The only drawback in carrying tots around is fitting all the kit that goes with having a three year old and a 10 month old into the small boot. But at a push I just about got a rather large folddown pushchair in there, as well as toys, a changing bag and a few small bags of shopping. Getting the pushchair out again was a bit of hassle, but with a few tugs it was

manageable. It was all worth it though just to see the children’s faces light up when they realised the car they were in had a roof that could go up and down. The new Audi A3 Cabriolet 1.2 TFSI is an obvious attempt by the German car maker to be greener. But Audi has pulled it off. By replacing a larger capacity engine with a more compact one that delivers better performance, improved economy and healthier emissions is a work of genius. In my opinion it works a treat. The car is bags of fun, and even better, the little A3 undercuts the outgoing version by £490. Can’t be bad!

Date Night R elease D ate : S eptember 1 3 th It was indeed as I expected, based in the busy city of New York, married couple Phil and Claire Foster are pretty bored with their relationship at the moment and want to find something that will re-ignite the flame. In attempt to do this they go to a high class restaurant in the city and discover it is booked out, instead of heading back home to look after the kids they decide to take someone else’s booking pretending to be them. The night soon escalates into an “exciting” disaster as two men come to the table claiming the Fosters have something they want. What really sets this film apart from the rest is the wacky one liner’s, you find yourself laughing way into the next scene in which your start laughing again, keeping you constantly fixated to the screen. Your discover Mark Wahlberg playing the half naked security guard who just might be able to help out the Fosters. To top this they even have Ray Liotta on board, after his performances in “Observe and Report” and “Youth in Revolt” he proves that he’s still got talent. Steve Carell to me is one of those actors who can always bring a script to life, he makes comedy real, when he laughs it doesn’t feel scripted, and it certainly doesn’t feel acted, that is a brilliant skill to possess, and one he accomplishes with ease.

Robin Hood R elease D ate : S eptember 2 0 th Russell Crowe is finally back kicking ass like he did in the Gladiator/3.10 to Yuma days. Ridley Scott is again behind the directing seat, the combination of Ridley and Russell is one of a kind, somewhat similar to the Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio duo. Robin Hood tells the classic tale of an at first un known archer (Robin Hood) in King Richards Army. After his heroic acts he swiftly rises through the ranks and becomes legendary and well known throughout the united kingdom. Robin Hood stories have been around for close to a hundred years now and to be honest we don’t need any computer graphics or high budget to illustrate this plot on screen. With that in mind I really don’t know what to expect, I hope this isn’t another Gladiator as that is something we have seen before, but saying that I sure hope it is just as good as Gladiator! This film looks to be gritty, and adventurous at the same time, hold on to your seats, because Robin Hood is back.

Autumn Fashion to fall back on
Never mind the cold approaching Winter; Autumn 2010 will be a season for falling in love. The clothes we saw in New York, London, Milan and Paris can be broadly categorised in to two strong trends; Grunge glamour was dominating the catwalks with a modern day mash-up of long skirts and boyish jumpers. the women’s military fashion trend isn’t going anywhere, though like all true fashion trends, in 2010 the military trend will evolve. Gone (but not quite) are the decadent lashings inspired by military uniforms of the Georgian and Victorian eras. Rather, military is now about functionality and utility. For the military fashion trend pick from the two key looks: Army and Aviator;
Curves are accentuated in billowing skirts that hug the hips and flare out to the floor, giving the illusion of longer legs and an hourglass figure. Combined with a slouchy knit, this is the new eveningwear staple that’s hitting the high street hard. Juxtaposing this, the second musthave trend is for absolute, supreme, takeyour-breathaway quality textures and shapes. Simple but not clinical, embellished with jewels, threaded with rich embroidery, pleated and draped and with different textures spun together as if by magic. New minimalism – simplicity and luxury blended for effortless elegance. Minimalist fashion for Fall & Winter features unfussy, clean lines, simple silhouettes and a neutral, monochromatic palate, showcasing black as the new black. Less is more when it comes to this trend. Balance the look by injecting a small pop of colour, in a shoe or handbag, such as burgundy or purple. Buy a pair of simple, high-waisted black trousers

(flared or skinny depending on your shape) and team with a crisp, white shirt. Then slick on some deep purple nail varnish and you’re good to go; minimalist trend nailed!
Military fashion as a trend is nothing new; in fact it’s been on the scene since 2008. But while fashion trends tend to burn out within a few years,
while the army interpretation is all about army greens it can still be broadly interpreted and it’s styled successfully with everything from cropped collared coats to loose-
fitting cargo pants, Topshop have a fantastic military range this season from knitted cardigans to heavy-duty trench coats, so make sure you get down there and pick up the clothes that’ll keep you the envy of your friends. The aviator interpretation of the trend, however, is far less open. It’s about a sleek look with slim cuts. And forget military green, this is all about darker hues with dark-brown leather jackets.

Male Autumn Fashion Trends
Never to be outdone by the ladies, men’s fashion is becoming more prominent and stylish in society than ever before. Designers are realising that men want to take care of themselves too and in the process, creating an army of better-dressed, more aesthetically-pleasing gentlemen that are easily tying with the women in the fashion stakes.

have: Aviator boots with shearling. It’s worth noting that shearling can also be applied to the collar of a greatcoat or an aviator jacket, particularly if you’re trending towards the fighter ace look. Be cautious about moving into the realm of costuming however: being on trend doesn’t translate to looking like you’re off to a fancy dress party dressed as the Red Baron.
Military remains in fashion for both men and women this Autumn, but just as this trend has changed for women, so too has it evolved for men, and, coincidently, in exactly the same way. If you intend to indulge in the must-wear interpretation of the men’s military fashion trend there are two key pieces you’ll need: A greatcoat. Colour choices here sit strongest with Army green and Air Force navy hues. The greatcoat can be single or double-breasted, and should be detailed with brass buttons and subtle shoulder pads. Second must-

Another fabulous look, seen on the catwalks of prestigious names such as Paul Smith and Tom Ford is Velvet. It’s not so much a trend as an Autumn 2010 essential; which, when done right, can inject the right amount of sex appeal into your

wardrobe. If a full blazer or suit isn’t for you, there’s always the option of indulging in a subtle interpretation, like some velvet lapels. Topman do a wonderful pair of navy or black velvet skinny trousers, so check out their website as well as many other high street names such as H&M and Burtons. A nod to the East London and Scandinavian music scenes, the “Urban Folk” trend includes brushed flannel checks are worn alongside fine vintage knits and slim fit chinos. The look is completed with fair-isle accessories and hiking boot inspired footwear. Vintage shopping is guaranteed to give you an authentic feel to your items and looks pretty cute too. Scene Family
You know what your children like and don’t like, but sometimes a new element to packed lunch keeps you from going mad seeing the same old thing every day and the kids don’t get bored. Savoury Sandwiches – sometimes just using cookie cutters to make interesting shapes (with a little of the crust still on) can revitalise interest. Maybe add one savoury and one sweet sandwich (maybe using the homemade jam!). If you are including anything like tuna or chicken, make sure you have a little cool pack in the bag. Rather than sliced shop loafs, try a bagel, wrap, or roll. These can be frozen and brought out one at a time. Salad – my daughter is not a sandwich fan, so pasta salad with a selection of salad vegetables is always popular, especially the multi coloured pasta. Don’t forget to pack a fork! Carrot, pepper and cucumber

fingers can be dipped into cream cheese or cheese spread and help towards the five a day. Snack eggs and sausages are handy, but not every day because of the higher fat content. Fruit & Veggies The usual bananas, apples, pears, oranges and grapes are handy. For a change, add some fruit to a low sugar jelly. Don’t forget to pack a spoon!! Calcium-yummy.... Yoghurts, rice puddings and cheese keep those bones healthy, but look out for the high sugar content yoghurts. Make plain yoghurt more interesting with some fruit or raisins. Lunch treat Some crisps (lower salt/fat), little chocolate bar, fairy cake, flapjack, shortbread....a little treat, but balance it out with the savoury and fruit and veggies. Most schools encourage the children to eat the savoury before moving onto the treats.

Fairy cakes
These are super fast and easy to make and have a little vanilla twist. Ingredients 2 large eggs 4oz caster sugar 4oz soft margarine 4oz self raising flour 1tsp vanilla essence Blend all the ingredients together until you have a very smooth and light coloured mixture. Line a tin with cake cases and half fill the cases with mixture. Cook the cakes for 1820 minutes; until they are golden and spring back up when pressed gently. Decorate with icing sugar made with water for a lighter decoration, or with a creamy butter cream icing.
Ingredients 8oz self raising flour Pinch of salt 2oz butter 1oz caster sugar 1oz dried mixed fruit 150ml milk Preparation method Heat the oven to 220C/425F/Gas 7. Lightly grease a baking sheet with butter not marg. Sieve together the flour and salt and rub in the butter. You shouldn’t get any mess past your second knuckle or in the palm of your hands. They should look like biscuit crumbs. The colder your hands the better. Stir in the sugar and fruit. Then add the milk to make soft dough. Use your fingers for this as they are your best kitchen tool. You can do it much lighter than with a spoon and feel that it is properly combined. Turn on to a floured work surface and knead together very lightly to push all the rough edges together. Once you have
a dome shape, using a floured rolling pin, roll out carefully and only go in one direction. Do not turn the dough over, just roll away from you. Turn the dough 90 degrees and repeat until the dough is about an inch thick. Use a 2inch cutter to stamp out rounds and place on a baking sheet. Lightly knead together the rest of the dough and stamp out more scones to use it all up. Brush the tops of the scones with a little milk and a little caster sugar if you like. Bake for 12-15 minutes until well risen and golden. Cool on a wire rack and serve with Naomi’s jam and maybe some clotted cream if you’re not on a daft diet! If you have a sweet tooth, you can swap the dried fruit for anything you like really, just got play around with the flavours. Try apple, mashed banana, apricots, cherries or even nuts. Also, try cheese, but not just cheddar, how about Applewood, Roquefort or hot Mexicana. Maybe some black olives with parmesan. These would make a great grown up pack lunch with cold meats or smoked salmon.
The crops of blackberries are abundant this year, so get your wellies on and grab a container or two. Blackberries are low in sugar and packed with antioxidants, including vitamin C. Look for blackberries away from the roads and a bit higher up than the dogs can aim for! They don’t keep very well once they have been picked, so get on with your jam, make a crumble and pop a few in a healthy smoothie. To freeze them, lay them flat in the freezer then pop them in a bag. This avoids making a mushy mess of them – wash the blackberries after you’ve defrosted them.

CLEANER RIVER NENE EMBANKMENT THANKS TO ‘WEEK OF ACTION’ People can enjoy the benefits of a cleaner and safer River Nene Embankment in Peterborough following a successful SaferPeterborough partnership ‘Week of Action’ campaign to reduce crime and environmental issues in the area. A focus on cleaning up stretches of the River Nene resulted in the removal of 17 shopping trolleys, four traffic cones, a bed frame, a ladder, a Zimmer frame and a child’s buggy. The river and the river bank was cleared of 68 bags of rubbish for disposal. Peterborough City Council’s city services team focused on improving the river bank environment by cutting back and treating shrubbery
along the footpath behind ASDA in Rivergate. The city services workers were supported by community payback offenders who removed weeds, trimmed grass areas, picked litter and painted underpasses.
Caroline Rowan, Peterborough City Council neighbourhood manager and week of action co-ordinator, said: “The week was a massive success in terms of creating a riverside we can be even more proud of. This could not have been achieved without a partnership approach to tackling the issues.” Caroline adds “ I really must thank all the volunteers and people that helped with the clean-up”

Ryan’s Premier League Preview Following on from last month’s debut column, I’ve decided to review the opening weeks of the football season, & what an entertaining few weeks it’s been! We’ve had some great goals, (Wolves’ David Jones spectacular & creative free kick was my personal favourite) howlers a plenty, (Liverpool fans watching Pepe Reina on opening day against Arsenal will testify to that!) & some terrific matches already. There can be no better place to start than the romantic story of the Premier Leagues first day. New boys Blackpool stunned the football world with a 4-0 thumping away to Roberto Martinez’s Wigan. This was made all the more amazing given the fact that a good number of Ian Holloway’s key loan signings from last seasons promotion campaign have returned to their clubs & by his own admission maybe even slightly weakened the squad. By the time you read this we’ll all know if they have continued their great start. The 2 other Premier League new boys will definitely now know what a tough season will be in store, if they didn’t already, as champions Chelsea tore apart West Brom 6-0, courtesy of a Didier Drogba hat-trick, & Manchester United dismantled Newcastle 3-0 with, 36 years young Ryan Giggs scoring for the 21st consecutive season. Most of the other so called other “big 4” challengers cancelled each other out in what was tough opening fixtures for Tottenham & Man City, then Liverpool & Arsenal. At White Hart Lane Spurs rued plenty of missed opportunities in what ended up a 0-0 draw, mainly down to the incredible performance of new Man City No 1, Joe Hart. The match at Anfield was slightly more controversial. Joe Cole, starting his 1st Premier League match for his
66

new side, obviously wanted to show his new admirers what the fuss was about & in a desperate attempt to block the ball from Arsenal new boy Laurent Koscielny, made a reckless challenge, giving ref Martin Atkinson no other choice than to send him off. To be fair to Liverpool they came out in the 2nd half & produced a courageous display & took the lead through David Ngog’s strike. With the game running out, normally 100% reliable Pepe Reina gifted the gunners an equalizer by dropping a cross, only to fumble back into his own net when the ball came back off the post. 1-1 the final score & nobody could really argue with the fairness of the outcome. Of the best of the rest Aston Villa, still smarting from Martin O’Neil’s shock departure, recorded a comfortable win against West Ham, with Man City bound James Milner saying his bye bye’s with a superb finish. Other Euro hopefuls Everton were slightly embarrassed by their 1-0 defeat at Blackburn, as much for their new pink away kit as the result! Finally a word on who should at least be everyone’s 2nd team in the city, Posh. After a fantastic start to the season with a 3-0 win against Bristol Rovers, Gary Johnson’s men recorded just as an impressive result in the Carling Cup, a 4-1 victory against Rotherham United. This obviously had expectation flying through the roof, only for that expectation to come crashing down like a lead balloon in the shape of a 5-1 mauling away at Bournemouth. Fans should not get too carried away by this. The new manager has assembled a squad that in my opinion is better than last season’s failing one, and now in a lower league I firmly believe the Posh will be in the mix come the business end of the season. Don’t forget to email me your views on ryan@semplesoccer.co.uk & visit www.semple-soccer.co.uk to read my responses.

New Football Team for Peterborough In early August a newly formed Learning Disability football team from Peterborough took part in their first tournament in Kings Lynn. There were six other learning disability teams taking part on the day. The team representing Peterborough Community Services were undefeated and narrowly lost out on winning the tournament by goal difference, finishing as well deserved runners up. They were presented with the runners up trophy as well as one of the team taking the player of the tournament award. Their next tournament will be held in Kings Lynn on the 10th September. Peterborough Learning Disability Football is hoping to host their own tournament in the near future

PETERBOROUGH TOWN SPORTS CLUB Amazingly we are in the last month of the cricket season already. Where has the Summer gone? After the excitement of a warm June and lots of runs being scored the last month has seen many rain affected games. The 1st X1 will have played Finedon, the serial winners of their league, before this goes to press. Defeat will have consigned us to another season as bridesmaid but victory will make for a close finish with just three games to go. The 2nd X1 are almost certain to gain promotion to Division Two unless they make a complete pig’s ear of things. The team has only been established for 3 months and is looking to make further additions to the team, so if anyone knows any suitable people who would like to join the squad, contact Andy, Ian or Allan. With a five a side team at the moment, it is hoped to expand the team to a seven a side and even an 11 a side team in the future and possibly a ladies team. All ages and abilities welcome. Training is currently held once a week.

They will be hopeful of putting

up a better show in The Cambs League this year, this being part dependant on whether the handful of top players in the club actually play for The Club. There should be more news of any developments on the tennis front next time. If any members who play at other clubs without floodlights wish to continue to play in the winter then we have a winter membership available. If you would like any information about the club, contact Peter Lambert on 01733 262202 or peter.ptsc@btinternet.com
