ike his father, Steve Spurrier Jr. has been at South Carolina for eight years. Like his father, he’s seen the attempts to implement a high-flying passing game ebb and flow, but mostly ebb. 10

When it’s on, it’s on, and Spurrier Jr. has reaped the benefits of it. The Gamecocks’ receivers coach, Spurrier Jr. has been blessed with three straight record-breaking pass-catchers under his direction: Sidney Rice, Kenny McKinley and Alshon Jeffery. All left an indelible mark upon the program, and it was easy to think that the next great one would come along and announce himself soon. While the passing game in the Gamecocks’ first two games has followed the standard of Spurrier Jr.’s tenure — a sickening 67 yards against Vanderbilt segued into a healthy 397 against East Carolina — USC is still awaiting that announcement. The USC receivers had an outstanding day against the Pirates, but are still waiting for the go-to label to attach itself to one player. Who’s it going to be? “Pick one,” Spurrier Jr. recently cracked. “Nah, we have a large group and one of them will rise to the top. I don’t know if we’ll have the kind of guys like we’ve had in the past, but if I can get a group of six every Saturday that can do as a group what those guys did by themselves, I’ll be happy.” The group features a lot of candidates. Junior Ace Sanders has the most experience, but at 5-foot-8, he doesn’t seem likely to be the possession or jump-ball artist that the others were. D.L. Moore is a senior, but his first three years were middling at best (although Moore caught two touchdowns against East Carolina and could be on his way up). DeAngelo Smith had a touchdown against the Pirates, but overall he has been inconsistent in the fall despite being a standout in the spring. Bruce Ellington and Nick Jones have the hands and speed, but, like Sanders, are not blessed with height. Prospects are heavy. Redshirt freshman K.J. Brent has a good upside. is the latest South Carolina Mr. Football recipient to come to USC and was an all-world athlete down the road at Lexington High School. Shamier Jeffery, Alshon’s brother, is built like his sibling but has yet to establish himself as deserving of more playing time. Many of these players had better recruiting rankings than the Big Three did. Alshon Jeffery was the most notable prospect, a four-star player by rivals.com who reneged on a verbal commitment to Southern Cal to stick close to his St. Matthews home. McKinley and Rice were each three-star recruits; Rice sat out his first year due to injury, and McKinley was a high-school quarterback who came to USC having caught just one pass during his prep career. By that standard, it seems likely that Spurrier Jr.’s plan of letting the cream rise to the top will work. McKinley learned under Rice as the latter exploded onto the scene in 2005, then became the go-to man when Rice bolted for the NFL after the 2006 season. Jeffery was an also-ran his first few games until the coaches turned him loose against Kentucky in 2009; three touchdowns later, he was on his way to becoming the Gamecocks’ all-time leader in receiving yards (3,042), and 100-yard games (12), as well as tying with Rice for the all-time record in receiving touchdowns (23, tied with Rice). The Gamecocks have yet to

sign a wide receiver in their class for next season, and spots are dwindling. It stands to reason that the group the team has now will still be around next year, as only Moore and walk-on Blair Lowery are seniors. No doubt, Spurrier Jr. would love to know that one of the underclassmen coming back in 2013 will be the man to demand the ball. Yet he has a problem. There isn’t just one trait or skill or characteristic that made Rice, McKinley and Jeffery what they were. Most of what they did couldn’t be taught, and could only be discovered on game day. They just did it. Every time. “Those guys were special,” Spurrier Jr. said. “And a lot of it, maybe not so much with Kenny, was we had to put them in and throw it up to them. That they kept making those plays was a testament to how natural they could do it.” The highlight reels were extensive. Whereas McKinley constantly got open and caught the ball, then turned the catch into a long gain with his ability to wiggle free, Rice and Jeffery soared through the air like twin eagles uncaged for the first time. There wasn’t a pass they couldn’t grab, making their quarterbacks’ lives easy. For some receivers, play calls had to be a five-step drop, a turn to the right and a throw to the spot where the receiver should be if he buttonhooked two steps off

the line. One slight mistake and the pass was at best incomplete, and at worst intercepted and returned for a touchdown. But with Rice and Jeffery, it was the standard option on every play-action pass — throw it in their general direction. (In a pleasant coincidence, the day after USC torched East Carolina through the air, Rice and Jeffery each caught a touchdown for their respective NFL teams.) “It is going to be tough without Alshon, because he could go up and get it,” quarterback Connor Shaw recently said. “But I trust our guys to make up for him.” Shaw, ailing with a bad shoulder, ceded to Dylan Thompson against East Carolina, and Thompson went to work. Ellington started him off with some catches in traffic; sophomore Damiere Byrd had the day’s biggest completion with a 53-yard haul-in; and Moore and Smith were responsible for three scores between them. Thompson revealed that the receivers had each come to his hotel room the morning of the game and told him that they were there for him. It eased Thompson’s mind after a lousy game at Vanderbilt and helped him to throw for 330 yards in his first collegiate start. “We’re receivers,” Ellington said. “We want the ball and we want to throw it around. It’s great

to just catch the ball and make plays and be a part of the offense. Everybody got into the game and everybody made plays. It was fun to be out there and winning.” Spurrier Jr. hopes that it’s the start of something big. Shaw is able to play through the pain in his shoulder, but the hope is that he heals enough so that it’s not painful at all. Saturday against Missouri might really determine how the season will progress. Thompson has been good, but he can’t run like Shaw can. But with Shaw in, it becomes more of a running-game plan. Yet, USC wants to be able to pass the ball no matter who is playing quarterback. It’s how Spurrier made his bones and it’s going to be necessary to win someday. Running the ball while stuck on its 30-yard-line with 45 seconds to play will not aid USC. Whoever’s throwing, it will help if he has a great wide receiver to throw to. The Gamecocks have several receivers who are good or who can be good or who will be good. But which one is going to be great? The search continues. “I don’t lay awake at night thinking of that,” Spurrier Jr. said. “We have a good group. And we don’t necessarily have to have the one guy to be the star. We can get group production.” Yet it would be nice to see that No. 1, in jersey or status, back on the field.

ne position on the recruiting trail that fans always seem to pay extra attention to is quarterback. In particular, many South Carolina fans have been hoping for Steve Spurrier to bring in a highly-rated signalcaller with offers from many of the name programs around the Southeast. In January, those fans will get their wish. Quarterback Connor Mitch has the accolades to go along with the big numbers he’s racked up at Wakefield High School in Raleigh, N.C. The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder received scholarship offers from Alabama, Auburn, LSU, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and others. He was a regional Elite 11 participant. Recruiting website rivals.com ranks Mitch as a four-star prospect, the nation’s 17th-best pro-style quarterback, and the ninth-ranked prospect out of North Carolina. Rivals.com national recruiting analyst Mike Farrell has called him the best quarterback prospect Spurrier has signed in his tenure as head man in Columbia. After receiving an offer from USC quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus in the spring, it did not take Mitch long to decide that USC was where he wanted to be. In early May, he pulled the trigger on a verbal commitment to the Gamecocks. “It's just a place I wanted to be,” Mitch told rivals.com after his commitment. “It's where I felt comfortable and feel at home. It's everything I want in a college. When they offered me, I started falling in love with the

The second time I went back for the spring game, I knew it was the place for me.” Having not one, but two experienced teachers of quarterbacks was another facet of the USC program that Mitch felt would help him tremendously. “Coach Spurrier is kind of like the second QB coach at South Carolina, and that’s obviously a great thing,” he told rivals.com in May. Gamecock fans also do not have to worry about losing Mitch late to another program. In interviews with the media and on his personal Twitter account, the talented passer has frequently condemned the practice of prospects verbally committing to a program only to flip to another later in the process. Interestingly, the athlete bloodlines in the Mitch family are strong. His father Bob was a quarterback at Syracuse. His brother Ryan played the position at Maryland. Sister Brittany earned a basketball scholarship to Duke to play basketball and later finished her career at Lenoir-Rhyne. Mitch will also graduate from high school in December and enroll at USC in January, which will allow him to go through spring practice next year with USC. During his sophomore and junior seasons at Wakefield, he passed for over 7,000 yards combined.

USC Needs To Establish Alpha Status in New Rivalry OPINION BY JAMES HARLEY

espite already having one SEC game under its belt, it’s safe to say that South Carolina’s matchup with Missouri this week is the most highly anticipated game of the year so far, as people are eager to meet and evaluate the new kid in town. While the Vanderbilt game was anticipated for many good reasons — first game of the season, first SEC game, first opportunity to see the team in action — ultimately most fans were fairly confident of a win going in, which is not so much the case this week. The Missouri game generates more nervousness and more an-

ticipation among the USC faithful because it will offer new insight into the overall competitiveness in the SEC East. Tradition makes it difficult to take Vanderbilt as a serious threat. There is no such tradition with the Tigers, and they are expected to win some games; therefore, figuring out where they belong on the ladder is understandably suspenseful. There is data to analyze in this pursuit, of course, but that really doesn’t have the same power as getting a feel for a team on the playing field. Although the Tigers ended up losing their first conference game to Georgia by three

touchdowns, their will to keep up with the Joneses in their new SEC neighborhood surprised and impressed many, at least until the second half when they got worn out and UGA blew the game open. It turned into a rather ironic beating, considering Missouri defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson’s incendiary pre-game remarks to The Columbia (Mo.) Daily Tribune that the Tigers would win because Georgia plays “old man football,” and that, “If we execute, nobody in this league can touch us, period.” Well,

meeting with that expectation, however unacknowledged or deeply buried the feeling might be in their psyche. Thus, this game is not just about a 2012 division title, but a possible 2020 title as well. Need an example? The Gamecocks lost their first two games (and three of their first four) to Arkansas upon joining the SEC, and have managed to beat the Razorbacks twice in a row only two times since then, no matter how good they were or how bad Arkansas was at any given time. Simply put, the Razorbacks have

The last thing USC wants to do is simply replace Arkansas with another team that beats USC every time they meet, which at this point is the case with Mizzou, who put the Gamecocks down most recently in 2005 (Steve Spurrier’s first year at USC) in the Independence Bowl. Sheldon, regardless of how much confidence and swagger you have, it’s hard to execute when your team gets tired out by halftime … like a bunch of old men. Still, despite being worn down by a strong and fast Georgia team, Missouri showed that it has some drive and some weapons. Coupled with the uncertainty caused by USC’s unfamiliarity with this new annual opponent, it becomes fair to wonder just who the Gamecocks are dealing with here. Are the Tigers a Vanderbilt or Kentucky that the Gamecocks can depend on to bow down in most cases, or are they a Georgia or Tennessee, who can never be counted out even if they aren’t looking that good on the surface? Georgia rendered its opinion on the matter two weeks ago; it’s now time for USC to do the same. The importance of winning this game is both immediate and long-range, as the Gamecocks need to establish themselves as the alpha male in this pairing. It always helps if an opponent gets used to losing and goes into each

owned USC from the beginning. Thankfully, Missouri’s inclusion in the SEC takes care of that particular problem by knocking the Razorbacks off of USC’s yearly schedule, starting next season. But the last thing USC wants to do is simply replace Arkansas with another team that beats USC every time they meet, which at this point is the case with Mizzou, who put the Gamecocks down most recently in 2005 (Steve Spurrier’s first year at USC) in the Independence Bowl. This may give Missouri bragging rights at the moment, but with little history between the two, that status can be quickly corrected before it becomes ingrained. If USC can just jump on top of the Tigers in the conference series and establish them as a Kentucky-like “breather” between the traditional SEC powerhouses, the Gamecocks can add another expected win every year to the list.
