Ward a Hit in First Year as Defensive Coordinator B Y D AV I D C L O N I N G E R

pinon on the decision was split. One side of South Carolina’s following applauded the move. No one could blame defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson for leaving USC in order to accept a head coaching job (at Southern Miss), and the Gamecocks looked to be in transition. What better way to eliminate any get-to-

know-you issues than by naming Johnson’s top assistant and close friend to replace him? The other side didn’t boo or complain, but was skeptical. The new guy had never been a coordinator, and he was about to take over a defense ranked in the nation’s top three? Gamecock football was at its highestever peak — why not use that

to conduct a national search for a new defensive coordinator, a well-known name, instead of just promoting the next guy? Steve Spurrier paid neither opinion any mind. He had a feeling, just as he did when he came back to Johnson after briefly settling on then-NFL assistant Brian VanGorder, that the new guy was the right guy.

“Lorenzo Ward is our defensive coordinator here at South Carolina,” Spurrier said, moments after the Gamecocks arrived in Orlando, Fla., for last year’s Capital One Bowl. “He’s the best guy I could hire, that’s why I hired him.” Ward was already the interim coordinator, but Spurrier made it official. Ward would guide the Gamecocks’ defense through the bowl game and he would be in charge for the 2012 season and beyond. Why? “I felt like I was going to do it anyway, and I felt like we needed to do it right now,” Spurrier said. “At one time I thought we’d look around a little bit, then I started thinking, ‘I don’t need to look around, I got the guy right here continues on page 14

Whammy, continued from page 10 who knows how we want to coach defense, and he knows how to do it.’” Through USC’s first seven games, despite a bit of a stumble in the Gamecocks’ first loss of the year at LSU, Spurrier’s feeling was right on target. Ward’s defense is as nasty, aggressive and primed for success as Johnson’s was — if not better. The man nicknamed Whammy has the Gamecocks’ defense ranked 12th in the nation in total defense, which includes being a stingy No. 5 in the country in scoring defense. Ward has stressed to his group that the red zone always belongs to USC — a prime reason why the Gamecocks had only given up five red-zone touchdowns in seven games. “It’s an attitude that we have, that the red zone always belongs to us,” said Ward, who cuts a distinctive profile with his bald head, strutting walk and intense reactions on the Gamecocks’ sideline. “The players that we have have bought into that and we’ve been successful so far.” It should be said that whoever got the job was going to be walking into a loaded situation.

USC returned ends Jadeveon Clowney and Devin Taylor, a pair of feared pass-rushers that might be the best one-two defensive end tandem in college football. Defensive tackle Kelcy Quarles was returning after a strong freshman campaign and had Byron Jerideau, the strongest member of the team and who holds several USC strength records, beside him. Veterans Shaq Wilson and DeVonte Holloman were back in the second level, while NFL prospect Victor Hampton was taking over at cornerback and headhunter D.J. Swearinger returned at free safety. Still, USC was losing AllAmerican defensive end Melvin Ingram and cornerback Stephon Gilmore, plus ball-hawking safety Antonio Allen and veteran defensive tackle Travian Robertson. (All are playing in the NFL this year.) There was going to have to be an adjustment. But Ward was the only candidate who could adjust with players who knew him, and who had been recruited by him. Ward would keep Johnson’s basic system with a small twist: He runs the same formation that Johnson did, but with more aggression.

Ward said numerous times that the Gamecock defense would employ the blitz more, but they’ve rarely had to use it. Most times, USC’s natural ability to rush the passer has been just fine. “We tried all summer to make it so that the rush is our game plan,” Clowney recently said. “To have me and Devin come off the edge and harass the quarterback.” But, he added: “We can do a lot better.” The LSU game showed that, with the Tigers’ patchwork offensive line shoving USC’s defensive line around. But for the other six games of the season, the Gamecocks under Ward have been just fine. Clowney is closing in on single-season school records for sacks and tackles for loss. While Taylor hasn’t been dominant, he’s made some big plays. Wilson has returned to his form from two years ago, challenging to lead the team in tackles. And the secondary has been no slouch — the surprising Jimmy Legree has two interceptions and one touchdown return, the other pick finishing a yard short of his second TD. It’s been a fine effort, the defense controlling the games just like it was being counted on to do. Yet, Ward doesn’t want to hear any congratulations or pats on the back — he’s been defensive coordinator for nine games, and one of them wasn’t great. Those are great numbers, but the one miss still bothers him. “We missed tackles,” he said after the LSU game. “We left quite a few tackles out there tonight. It was by far the worst performance we’ve had. I take all the blame as defensive coordinator. We’ll get back to work and fix the problems.” The first half of the season was masterful, Ward calling the shots from the sideline (unlike Johnson, who liked to sit in the pressbox and view the field). Ward likes the sideline, despite admitting he can’t get an entire view of any lastsecond adjustments based on the offensive alignment, because he can talk to his players face-to-face instead of through the headset.

“That’s something that I’ve always liked to do,” he said before the year. “Most times a player will respond better to that than talking to him through the headphones. I can talk to him there about correcting what he’s doing and also clap him on the back.” The players have bought into that approach. While Johnson was never stingy with praise, he saved most of it for the film review sessions during the week. Ward prefers doing it on the field and during the games. “It does make a difference,” Swearinger said. “When he comes to you during the game and tells you something, you pay more attention to it because you’re going to have to go out and do it on the next play. I started doing that with some of the younger players as well.” “Coach Whammy is great and coach Johnson was great,” Brison Williams said, declining to identify differences between the two. “We all came here under both of them and we like that Coach Whammy got the job.” Ward got that nickname, Whammy, from his coaches and teammates at Alabama. Because of his fierce tackling, Ward was once complimented by thencoach Bill Curry as having really “whammed” the ball-carrier. The name, helped by the TV show Press Your Luck (“No whammy no whammy no whammy!”), stuck. Ward is much gentler and kinder these days, as he is a leader of men instead of a youngster still learning the trade. He’s honed his approach well, having bounced around the Southeast and serving a year as an assistant coach with the Oakland Raiders. His fierceness comes out on gameday, when Ward is just as vocal and excited as his players when Clowney records a sack or Legree picks off a pass. That is a change from the stoic Johnson, who carried the same expression after clinching a trip to the SEC Championship Game as he did after the Gamecocks lost it. “We got the right guy,” Spurrier said. No argument thus far.

Linebacker Larenz Bryant

ith five senior linebackers on the 2012 roster, a huge priority during the 2013 recruiting cycle was signing several talented prospects at that position. With National Signing Day less than four months away, the Gamecocks staff is well on its way to fulfilling that goal. The headliner of the group is one of the nation’s top defenders: Vance (N.C.) High School’s Larenz Bryant. The 6-foot-1, 215-pounder committed to USC in June after a recruiting process that saw him rake in offers from some of the country’s best programs; Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Virginia Tech and a host of others pursued Bryant heavily before he chose childhood favorite USC. “I just felt like it was a good fit for me,” he told gamecockcentral.com shortly after his verbal commitment. “I grew up a South Carolina fan. It’s home for me. Every time I go there I felt like that’s where I wanted to be.” Bryant, a two-way player for Vance at running back and linebacker, earned an impressive list of accolades following his junior season. After rushing for 1,435 yards and 21 touchdowns on offense and recording 144 tackles, seven sacks and two interceptions on defense, Bryant was named to the U.S. Army All-American team and as a participant in The Opening, an elite and intensive football camp sponsored by Nike. The team of analysts on the rivals.com network all had great things to say about Bryant after seeing him in person this summer and on film. “Bryant is a complete linebacker,” said Jake Rowe of ugasports.com. “Most linebackers at that age are great athletes that can run plays down and deliver the big hit. Bryant can definitely do that, but he is also very comfortable and smooth in coverage. The

This allows him to have an elite ability to change direction, or turn and run with running backs or tight ends that are releasing vertically down the field.” “Had one of the best Nike camp performances at linebacker I’ve ever seen in six years doing this,” said Rivals’ Kynon Codrington. “Bryant showed great range in seven-on-seven period and collected a handful of interceptions. He was just as good in one-on-one’s, showing he can stick with running backs coming out of the junction point on angle routes. He should be an immediate contributor when he arrives to Columbia.” Given his skill set, Bryant is versatile enough to play several positions behind the line, but he’s likely to play one of the Gamecocks’ two inside linebacker positions. “Coach [Lorenzo] Ward, he said I will be playing on the inside mostly, but that they’re looking to put weight on me,” Bryant said. “They’re in the 4-2-5 and he said I can cover and if they put enough weight on me I can play [middle] linebacker. [South Carolina linebackers coach Kirk] Botkin, he’s very energizing, man. Him and coach Ward are very close, so they think the same way.” Bryant is the highest-rated prospect in USC’s 2013 class; he’s ranked as the second-best prospect in the state of North Carolina, the No. 2 inside linebacker prospect in the country, and the No. 50 overall prospect in the country.

Tennessee’s Fall the Karmic Product of Greedy Fans OPINION BY JAMES HARLEY

f there is one thing that South Carolina can learn from Tennessee, it is the importance of supporting and having faith in a good coach when a team manages to land one. As one of the nation’s most historically successful college football programs, the Volunteers are currently in very unfamiliar territory — the middle of the pack. Granted, the particular pack the Vols run with is arguably the best, but that is no consolation to fans who expect so much more than what they are getting. Too bad for them. They should have stood behind coach Phillip Fulmer when he was on the hot seat four years ago. Instead, they whined like spoiled little brats who weren’t getting all the candy they wanted when, in fact, daddy Fulmer was a confectioner extraordinaire. The result of this lack of faith by fans and the administration? The mediocre team they have now, and very little hope for substantial improvement any time soon. Simply put, firing Fulmer ruined the great thing Tennessee built in Knoxville. Sure, in the decade following Tennessee’s 1998 national championship, Fulmer had a couple of losing seasons: two 5-7 bummers in 2005 and 2008, his last year with the Vols. But Fulmer also guided the team to four more 10-win-plus seasons (and two nine-win years), as well as three SEC East titles. But Volunteer nation expected more national championships and seemed to think it was possible to compete for one every year. It really isn’t. Face it: There are more than 120 schools out there, and to win a championship once every century is actually pretty good by the numbers, as hard as that might be to accept. If Tennessee had kept Fulmer, chances are that he would have bounced back from his losing season like he had after the previous one, when he climbed quickly back to the 10-win level. After all, he achieved that in about twothirds of his years there. Instead,

the faithless now have a program with consecutive losing seasons for the first time in 100 years. Way to go, guys! Bitter fans will say that the egomaniacal Lane Kiffin screwed up the program by leaving early and causing the remaining talent to move on as well, but that’s what you get when you hire a sociopath with little reason to loyally commit to the program. Of course, the job shouldn’t have been open to Kiffin, or anyone else, in the first place. Now it’s Derek Dooley who is on the hot seat in Knoxville, as he’s the one who coached the Vols to two consecutive losing seasons. Conspiracy theories claiming that the son of legendary Georgia coach Vince Dooley has actually been planted at Tennessee in order to destroy the program aside, the state of Volunteer football today still comes down to simply not recognizing when you have something good right in front of you. Football is a team game, and at the college level, part of that team is the athletics administration. But the fans are also part of it. In Tennessee they loudly voiced their negative opinions and lack of respect for Fulmer when they should have stood by him. It does seem that in this world of instant gratification, people are more willing to abandon the people who have done great things for them once those benefits are a few years old, but the best college football programs rely on strong traditions of loyalty and support to maintain their status. Tennessee’s failure in this regard is a good example for teams trying to build programs. Appreciate what you have going, Gamecocks. It might not be perfect yet, but if USC can stay near the top, then that magic season will eventually happen. Stay supportive when it doesn’t and it will get here faster.
