The End? Will Marcus Lattimore Make it Back? B Y D AV I D C L O N I N G E R

E

veryone around South Carolina football knew that the Wofford game would be difficult. Not so much because of the opponent — although the Terriers’ triple-option offense drives defensive coordinators crazy — but because of the moment. Saturday was probably going to be the last time Marcus Lattimore donned garnet and black and took the field at WilliamsBrice Stadium. One of the top

10

running backs in the country, Lattimore was likely to start his NFL career after this season, to take the money while it was there and get himself set for life. As

much as Lattimore loved being a Gamecock, Spurrier, as much as he loved his tailback, would not hestitate to tell Lattimore to jump to the NFL if he filed for the draft and came back as a projected firstround pick. Saturday will be difficult, as last Saturday was. Again, not so much because of the opponent. But because we’re left wondering if Lattimore, the heart and soul of the Gamecocks, will ever get to play another game at WilliamsBrice Stadium — or anywhere else.

A Wail from Gamecock Nation The gruesome knee injury that Lattimore suffered against Tennessee triggered a wail from Gamecock Nation. At the same time, the entire country sympathized. Lattimore’s impact on the

college football landscape was clearly evident — the Tennessee bench gathered with USC players around Lattimore on the field as he was carted away, and the wellwishes — ranging from the smallest Carolina fan to Vice President Joe Biden — poured in. The wondering about the unfairness of it was rampant, as it should be. Lattimore — never one to trash-talk despite how talented he is, never one to disgrace the name of himself or his university, already a courageous player who had come back from one seasonending knee injury — was again hurt. And this injury looks far more serious than his previous one, drawing comparisons to a similar injury suffered by Denver Broncos running back Willis McGahee and, worse, the infamous hit to former Washington quarterback Joe Theismann that continues on page 14

The End, continued from page 10 ended his career. “When you lose a guy like Marcus, he’s such a leader on the team,” quarterback Connor Shaw said. “He gets guys going, so it hurts us.” USC has been tight-lipped about the severity of the injury, noting only that Lattimore “damaged” ligaments in his knee. Spurrier said that there was a dislocated kneecap as well, but that it was put back into place the same day as the injury; Spurrier also confirmed that Lattimore had undergone surgery.

Every Injury is Different Any ligament tear requires at least a six-month rehabilitation period. When dealing with multiple ligament tears, as Lattimore is this time, the recovery depends on how much the doctors are able to fix at once. If they could only repair one ligament at a time, obviously that elevates the timetable. And then there’s the nagging question about after the surgery

14

and the rehab is completed. Will the player ever be the same? That question has haunted Gamecock Nation since that horrible moment, when Lattimore flipped into the air, came down, gripped his knee and began facing a future that was suddenly very cloudy. “Good things are going to happen for Marcus,” Spurrier said after the Tennessee game. “I don’t know exactly where or how, but good things are going to happen for Marcus Lattimore.” The reality of the situation is this: If Lattimore’s rehab takes longer than the offseason, he might have to sit out the 2013 season. He could do that without using up any eligibility, since he did not redshirt as a freshman. That would potentially clear him up to play in 2014, his final year of eligibility. But the clock on his professional career has already begun ticking. Lattimore turned 21 two days after the injury. Running backs in the NFL don’t have very long shelf lives as it is; if Lattimore

cannot play in 2013, then he faces turning 23 in the middle of his final year, then playing his rookie year in the NFL at 24. It’s obviously far too soon to speculate on if Lattimore will ever get to the NFL, or get to play another college game, or even be able to move around normally. Everyone heals differently, and there’s no telling what could happen tomorrow in his rehab; there are too many other factors involved. All that can be done is to wait. And hope. “Hopefully he’ll be back,” Spurrier said. “Maybe he’ll be back next year. Maybe it won’t be quite as severe as it appeared on the field out there.”

Support is There McGahee suffered a similar injury to Lattimore’s in 2003, tearing three ligaments on one hit in the final game of his college career. Labeled a can’t-miss, top-five NFL pick that season, McGahee’s stock dropped, but he was still picked in the first round.

The rehab cost McGahee his entire first year in the NFL, but he collected three straight 1,000-yard seasons once he returned. San Francisco running back Frank Gore has also returned from multiple ACL injuries; he rushed for more than 1,000 yards five times in the past six seasons, and he’s on pace to do so again this season. There is no doubt that Lattimore will attack his rehab, just as he did after his last injury. But until he gets back on the field and shows that he can still play, that he can still be the same Lattimore, his injuries raise red flags. He has the support. His teammates, even some of those who were sobbing in the immediate aftermath of the injury, have pledged to play for him. They already took the Tennessee game to heart, winning and presenting Lattimore with the game ball; now they want to finish the season as well as they possibly can. “Just to see a guy like Marcus hurt and down on the ground like that, it kind of hurt me,” said Bruce Ellington, a two-sport competitor who has been noted for his composure in tight ballgames yet who broke into tears at the sight of his teammate lying on the field. “Ace [Sanders] kept telling me if he was out there, he would give 100 percent, so I thought about that and just went out there and did that.” Everybody will be cheering for Lattimore to make it back. The hope is to get him on the sideline for a game or two the rest of this season, but it depends on his medical condition. It stands to reason that Lattimore would want to be there, as well — but despite the smile on his face a few days after the injury, there’s no way of truly knowing how Lattimore is looking at this. This year was probably going to be the last of Lattimore’s college career. USC fans knew that, and were prepared to give him a rousing ovation the last time he walked out of Williams-Brice Stadium, against Wofford, just in case. Now, everyone’s just hoping Lattimore’s career didn’t end three weeks ago.

outh Carolina was recently named by rivals.com as “Cornerback U,” for the school’s recent record of sending top-flight players at the position to the next level. From the older (Sheldon Brown) to the most recent (Stephon Gilmore), USC has multiple cornerbacks excelling in the NFL. Defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward and secondary coach Grady Brown are looking to continue stocking USC with talent at the position, and the biggest name in the 2013 class hails from a state that the staff has had success with in the past. Brendan Langley of Kell High School in Georgia is one of the country’s top prospects regardless of position, checking in just inside the Rivals250 for the 2013 recruiting cycle. Langley, who plays wide receiver and cornerback for his Longhorns squad, drew a lengthy list of scholarship offers during the recruiting process. Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Miami, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Nebraska, Tennessee, UCLA and Vanderbilt all made offers to the 6-foot-1, 188-pounder. For USC, quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus headed Langley’s recruitment with involvement from Ward and Brown. At one time, it looked like Georgia was in the best position to land the four-star defensive back prospect. Then it was Alabama. Eventually, the Gamecocks found themselves in a battle with Tennessee before landing Langley in August. “I’m more than proud to accept a scholarship offer from the University of South Carolina,” Langley said in a statement that announced his pledge.

Height: 6-1 Weight: 188 Hometown: Marietta, Ga. School: Kell High School Class: Senior Langley cited USC’s coaching staff, in particular Brown, as a big factor in his decision. In his statement, he reiterated his desire to play for a staff like USC’s, as well as in the country’s best league. “[The] SEC is the best conference in college football,” Langley said in August. “South Carolina is a beautiful state. The university is an SEC monster as well as a national contender and I can’t wait to help them reach another SEC title and even a national title. I can’t wait to play for a coach with such experience and control as coach [Steve] Spurrier.” Although Langley would be more than capable of playing wide receiver at the FBS level, the Gamecocks’ coaching staff has designs on playing him at cornerback, with the size and speed that Ward covets at that position. After the summer camp circuit, rivals.com gave an assessment of Langley. “At 6-foot-1, Langley is one of the biggest corners around,” the network said. “As you might expect, he uses that size and his length to his advantage in coverage. He is strong enough to cause problems at the line of scrimmage, and quick enough to cover a lot of ground on the back end.” Langley plans on graduating in December and enrolling at USC in January.

to take the possibility of losing to Wofford seriously. But as cupcake opponents go, the Terriers are not really all that sweet and yummy. Indeed, in examining Wofford’s recent history, there are several reasons not to overlook the Terriers in preparing for the trip to Clemson for the big rivalry game next week. While none of these are reasons to actually favor Wofford here in Columbia, they are clear indicators that the Terriers, ranked No. 17 in the Football Championship Subdivision, should not be taken for granted. First and foremost, the Terriers are led by a solid coach in Mike Ayers, now in his 25th season at the school. Taking over a 1-10 team in 1988, he quickly turned the program around, leading Wofford to consecutive 9-3 seasons in 1990 and 1991. Since then, he has added five more nineplus win seasons to his resume, as well as three Southern Conference championships. He has taken the Terriers to the FCS playoffs in four of the last five years, making it as far as the semifinals with a 10-3 team in 2010. Not too shabby. Ayers obviously knows what he’s doing and, not surprisingly, has continued his success this year as well. Wofford opened the 2012 season with five straight wins (and seven in the first eight games), including an 82-0 beatdown of Division II opponent Lincoln University. Yes, you read that correctly, 82-0. While a Division II victory is hardly something to brag about, any team scoring 82 points in a college football game is doing something right, especially when utilizing the entire bench in the process (17 players ran the ball in Wofford’s rush-heavy offense, with none carrying more than seven times). Clearly, these guys just need a step or two to make big

usc VS wofford

things happen. The Terriers’ recent history with USC has also been notable, having come to Columbia twice already during Spurrier’s tenure and challenging the Gamecocks both times. In 2006, USC’s 8-5 team was only able to beat Wofford by a single touchdown, 27-20, while the 2008 team fared only a little better, with a 23-13 win. This is not the kind of margin any Gamecock fan, player or coach would expect or desire to see against any school from a lesser division. So, there is at least some cause for concern this week as Ayers brings an even better team to town. Even more recently, Clemson got a bitter taste when it bit into this cupcake last season at Memorial Stadium, likewise pulling out just a one-score victory at 35-27. Of course, this is a history of coming close — not winning. But if Ayers can keep Wofford hanging around long enough and the Gamecocks are not as focused as they should be, as in the Florida game, then anything could happen. After all, Arkansas surely didn’t expect Louisiana-Monroe to step up and take it down earlier this season, nor did Virginia Tech imagine a loss to James Madison two years ago, nor Michigan to Appalachian State in 2007, and so on. Wofford isn’t scary, but it is a real team that should be handled very carefully to avoid disaster, which would be the definite result of a loss in this game. Keep up with Harley’s Side Line blog at free-times.com and his Side Line column in the weekly edition of Free Times.
