in Columbia for games against non-conference Navy, SEC doormat Vanderbilt, defending national champion (but rebuilding) Auburn and another SEC lightweight (Kentucky), the chance for the Gamecocks to reel off four straight wins and be 6-0 is very high. No coach worth his salt would ever look past the next game, but Steve Spurrier knows only too well how much Williams-Brice has meant to his team in 2009 and 2010. “We’ve won just about all of them, I guess, over the past two years,” Spurrier said over the summer. “The fans really showed up and made it a tough place to play and we really appreciated that. That Alabama game, our fans were really super.” The 35-21 win over the No. 1 Crimson Tide last year was a banner moment for Spurrier’s program and for USC football in general. It was the first victory over a top-ranked team in program history and came during a run of success against No. 1 teams from USC’s football, men’s basketball and baseball teams.

Can Gamecocks Take Advantage of Four-Game Stretch? B Y D AV I D C L O N I N G E R

Never underestimate its strength. 12

South Carolina kicks off a four-game home stand when it welcomes Navy to WilliamsBrice Stadium on Sept. 10 and is looking mightily forward to it. After two weeks on the road — once at a neutral site 90 minutes away and once at always-hostile Georgia — returning to the home turf will be a major boon. In a season that is expected to be the greatest in program history, the Gamecocks have already begun 2-0, with a rallying win over East Carolina and a crucial SEC-opening win over Georgia that has them in first place in the SEC East. Back

The image of a packed-tothe-gills Williams-Brice, white rally towels waving in unison as “Sandstorm” blared and Marcus Lattimore sprinted into the end zone, was a major selling point. It showed the country that the Gamecocks just might be on the verge of something special, and it came in handy on the recruiting trail. Several pledges who ended up signing with USC attended the game and took notice of the excellent fan support. To be fair, many recruits have loved attending games at Williams-Brice in the past, but during big games, often didn’t get to see the home team win. In particular, former defensive end Cliff Matthews, an all-star home-state player who could have gone anywhere, committed during a 24-17 loss to No. 2 Auburn in 2006, saying the atmosphere in the stadium was

the clinching factor. But losing home games to the big boys changed last year and has been changing for the past two seasons. The Gamecocks are 12-2 at home in 2009 and 2010, part of a 29-13 home record under Spurrier, and they have knocked off four Top 25 teams in that two-year span (Alabama, No. 4 Ole Miss, No. 15 Clemson and No. 22 Georgia).

Can Gamecocks Turn Talent into Wins? None of the next four teams were ranked going into the USC-Georgia game, giving the Gamecocks a supposedly easy time, but it’s not so much about quality of opponents as it is taking advantage of what’s ahead. USC knows it has more talent than each of the next four teams, and knows that a murderous stretch of three road SEC games sandwiched around the Oct. 22 bye week is after the home stand. Taking these four, getting at least bowl-eligible and being 4-0 in the SEC for the first time since 2001 and only the second time in program history, would have the Gamecocks on their way to the promised land. But first they’ll stop in their own version of Canaan, at the corner of Bluff Road and George Rogers Boulevard. The Game-

cocks are hoping their garnetand-black-clad fans will welcome them there, beginning against Navy. “Seeing our fans make the trip to Charlotte was pretty special,” Lattimore said. “I’m glad they showed up and we look forward to paying them back once we get back on our home field.” Season tickets are close to sold out for this year, and even though Navy begins the home slate, a packed house is expected. Those who weren’t able to make the trips to Charlotte or Athens (like many students, due to financial crunches) will be able to get their free tickets and jam the north end zone. Former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach called that end zone the loudest place in America, and it’s seen its share of highlights. It was that end zone that Noah Whiteside strutted into after catching the first touchdown of the Spurrier era in 2005, that end zone where Sidney Rice caught so many passes that appeared destined for the seats and that end zone that Stephen Garcia landed in after colliding with a Southern Miss helmet and spinning off it for the TD last season. That end zone is only part of it. The Gamecocks want Williams-Brice filled for every game, and if the opposing team doesn’t bring a lot of fans (the Southeast

corner usually has a few holes to fill, even with the band), fans are being asked to get into that stadium in any way possible (although buying a ticket, naturally, is preferred). “That’d be great if they can do that for us,” fifth-year defensive tackle Travian Robertson said. “We’ve always had great crowd support and we’re looking forward to having more. We know it’s up to us to help fill it, though.”

A Chance to Make History While Gamecock fans have become famously known for their loyalty, still filling the stadium while in the throes of a 21-game losing streak over 1998 and 1999, the team knows it has to live up to its potential in order to help the ticket-selling process. Preseason predictions and such only hold so much weight, even though buying a ticket at least guarantees the chance to see some future NFL players while they’re still amateurs. Home-state fans can marvel at Lattimore, Alshon Jeffery and Jadeveon Clowney as local guys who are making good, and also seem primed for profes-

sional riches in a few years. They can also revel in the glories of past games, recalling the great moments they’ve seen as the minutes tick away toward the current kickoff. The main objective is to be there, be loud and be proud as the Gamecocks attempt to reach what many have picked them to take — the SEC championship. An electric home crowd can help them toward that goal — and also toward the smaller but no less important goal of winning every home game. The Gamecocks have never won every home game in a single season since joining the SEC 20 years ago, and they haven’t done it at all since 1987. If USC achieved it this year, especially if the team kept winning on the road and completed a threegame winning streak on Nov. 26 against Clemson … well, there’s no telling what the celebration would be like. “That would be something,” Lattimore said at SEC Media Days. “Couldn’t get the smile off my face if we did that. But we have a long way to go before we can even think about that kind of stuff.” Beginning on Saturday.

Offensive Tackle

hen South Carolina offensive line coach Shawn Elliott arrived in Columbia after a lengthy stay at FCS power Appalachian State, he was tasked with improving a USC offensive line that had traditionally struggled under coach Steve Spurrier. The overall talent and depth of the unit needed an upgrade, and quickly. After helping to sign a solid 2011 class headlined by All-American tackle prospect Brandon Shell from Goose Creek, Elliott’s second class of linemen is already in place five months before National Signing Day. One of the headliners of the group is Brock Stadnik from Western Guilford High School in North Carolina. The 6-foot-5, 285-pound tackle is rated a four-star prospect by Rivals.com, and comes in at number 183 in the latest Rivals250 ranking, which projects the top 250 prospects in the country regardless of position. When Stadnik and his twin brother Clayton verbally pledged to USC’s staff in May, he passed over offers from Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Tennessee and a host of others. “South Carolina was the best decision at the end of the day,” Stadnik told GamecockCentral. com right after his announcement ceremony. “We felt like we would fit in well with that program. We really feel comfortable with that program.”

Running backs and tight ends coach Jay Graham recruited Stadnik and his brother to South Carolina and was a big part of the comfort level both have with the school. “Coach Graham, you know he’s been there since day one,” Stadnik said. “We have a good relationship. He’s been here many times, and we’ve been down there many times.” Stadnik’s interest in USC really heated up in October 2010, when he and members of his family took in USC’s 35-21 victory over thentop-ranked Alabama. “The USC vs. Alabama game was absolutely amazing,” he said afterwards. “The atmosphere was unbelievable. The music and hype of the crowd just blew me away. I’ve never been to a game like it before.” The two brothers were also on campus during the spring for two days in Columbia, a trip that gave them a chance to mesh with Elliott, who played another role in their decision to attend USC. “He’s a real high-intensity coach,” Stadnik said of Elliott. “He works his players hard to get them better. He’s real upfront with me and is someone I can trust. There’s no sugarcoating with him. He tells you when you do something wrong and praises you when you do something right.” Stadnik, who is one of four prospects with four-star markers from Rivals.com in the 2012 class, is planning on enrolling at USC along with Clayton in January. That will give him a chance to go through 2012 spring drills with the team and an opportunity to earn playing time on a unit that will be short on experience next season at tackle. Brock is happy that he and his brother got the choice out of the way early. “It was important to us to make the decision now to focus on things like school and getting ready for next season,” he said.

To Be the Best, You Have to Beat the Best — and the Worst OPINION BY JAMES HARLEY

he Gamecocks typically schedule a three- or four-game home stand every season and 2011 is no exception, as they prepare to face Navy, Vanderbilt, Auburn and Kentucky in Columbia over the next month. Though generally successful during these stands (they’re undefeated in the last two), this year’s is a bit more challenging in that the list contains three SEC schools where usually there are at least a couple of obvious cupcakes. Granted, these particular three opponents are not the strongest teams in the conference right now, but all have recently shown the ability to derail the Gamecocks in one way or other. Though not recently, Navy has certainly done the same. But despite the infamous blow they dealt USC in 1984, it probably won’t be Navy sinking the ship this year, though the other three should not be taken lightly if you consider the recent history. Even lowly Vanderbilt has beaten the Gamecocks in two of their last four meetings, and the two USC wins during that stretch were by a measly 4 and 14 points over Commodore teams they frankly should have blown out. Add to that the fact that Vanderbilt returns more starters than any other team in the league and … well, OK, that’s probably not a good thing for them, actually. Never mind. They would probably fare better with an entirely new lineup. Defending national champion Auburn, on the other hand, has been downgraded by the pundits based on the fact that they return fewer starters than anyone else in the SEC. Their failure to dominate Utah State in the opening week of the season has also been touted as an example of this perceived drop-off in power, but this conclusion disregards another very important aspect of that game and Auburn’s recent history. The Tigers were down by two scores with only three minutes remaining, and rather than fold they rallied and did what they had to do to win, successfully storming back and scoring two touchdowns when it was all on

the line, thus effectively wiping away their mistakes from earlier in the game. This, you may recall, is exactly how they won the national championship last year, winning seven of their 14 games by just one touchdown or less. Do not count them out simply because they played another close game. They may have a new group of players on the field, but with consistent Top 25 recruiting classes (and Top 5 classes the last two years) they aren’t exactly weak. These guys are just getting their feet wet, and will have been gametested by both Mississippi State and Clemson by the time they meet the Gamecocks. Finally, there is Kentucky to consider, and surely no one has forgotten what happened in Lexington last year when the Wildcats’ defense put Marcus Lattimore out of the game and held USC scoreless in the second half, paving the way for the Kentucky victory. Well, guess what? Ten of their defensive starters are back. Yes, the same ones who did that. They also return more than half their offensive starters, though not their quarterback, a position that is admittedly key to their success given their lower level of talent across the board. Of course, you might scoff at the notion that they could actually beat USC twice in a row after losing for 10 straight years, but that’s how people felt about Vanderbilt a few years ago before they stepped up and did the same. In fact, throughout history it’s almost always a lesser team that ruins Gamecock glory. So, true success here will ultimately be determined as much by finally winning every game the team should win as by beating a No. 1 team or winning the division, as the Gamecocks did last year. To be the best, we have to beat the best — but also the worst, as well. Hopefully, this home stand will be a start down that road.
