he talk about the Gamecocks’ chances of winning the SEC or even a national championship was rampant after South Carolina began the year 6-0, but after the the team’s 44-11 loss at Florida on Oct. 20, it ceased. While there’s still a slim chance that USC can make it to the SEC championship game, it relies a whole lot more on what other teams do than what USC does.

After the sting of the Florida loss — a game in which, unlike the loss at LSU, USC simply gave it away — Steve Spurrier put it simply. “We know we don’t have much of a chance [at winning the East],” he said. “So we’re focusing on what kind of year we can have. There are still a lot of goals out there.” The Gamecocks got it started with a 38-35 win over Tennessee on Oct. 27 to improve to 7-2, and they host Arkansas this week, trying to make it 8-2. Winning out means the Gamecocks would match their regular-season record of a year ago (10-2), with a chance to equal the overall record of 2011 (11-2). That would give USC an incredible 22 wins in two years and 31 wins in three years — rather lofty credentials considering the program had lost 21 of 22 games going into the 2000 season. It would also mean four straight wins over Clemson, which has only been done once before (1951-54). This season might always carry the perception of having had a chance to produce something fantastic — after all, the Gamecocks

were ranked third in the country after their beatdown of Georgia. But really, in the grand scheme of it, any success at USC should be seen as significant and remembered simply because it didn’t happen much before. “We haven’t talked about [trying to win the East] at all,” center T.J. Johnson said after the Florida game. “We’re just trying to win the next game and still hit a bunch of our goals.” Johnson declined to address which goals there still were, but winning the Clemson game is always one of them, as is trying to equal or improve the win total from the previous year. Spurrier also said that winning every home game was a goal — that hasn’t been done since 1987. As long as USC can handle the pass-happy Razorbacks, and then a tricky Wofford team that drives opponents crazy with its triple-option running game, the Gamecocks will be perfect at home. It will be another first in the Spurrier era, which seemingly has another first posted after every win. continues on page 12

Spurrer’s Long List of Achievements

For the second straight year, Spurrier will have to play the rest of the season without the player he wanted to win a championship with: running back Marcus Lattimore. Lattimore was carted off the field during the Tennessee game after a brutal hit that caused massive damage to his right knee. While Spurrier and Lattimore are hopeful that he will be able to return some day, the rehabilitation process will be long and hard. Spurrier was naturally upset over Lattimore, this injury being much worse than last year’s. While he maintained a stoic face about it, the coach’s mind was clearly churning with concern over a player who is so much more to the team than just his performance on the football field. The outpouring of support from the nation has proven how special Lattimore is. Keeping a brave face, Spurrier pointed out that USC would simply have to channel last year, when the team also lost Lattimore. In an eerie coincidence, the Gamecocks again lost Lattimore in a game just before the bye week, a game they managed to narrowly win (two points last year; three points this year), and a game in which the

Spurrier has accomplished so much in his eight years at USC that the list is never done. Some of the highlights: the Gamecocks’ first 11-win season; the first six-win season in the SEC; the first SEC East championship; the first Top 10 finish. Spurrier has made it known that he wants to be the winningest coach at USC, which he will be with three more victories (Rex Enright holds the record with 64). That wish has been greeted by some with a sense of joy and dread: Once Spurrier becomes the winningest all-time coach at two SEC schools (USC and Florida), would he then want to retire? Not likely. Spurrier wants an SEC title. Only two other coaches have ever won an SEC championship at two schools (Bear Bryant at Kentucky and Alabama; Nick Saban at LSU and Alabama) and Spurrier wants to be the third. With the Gamecocks out of the running this year, Spurrier, who has constantly said he feels much younger than his 67 years, shouldn’t be leaving any time soon.

clinching play was an interception. In 2011, Brandon Wilds came on to replace Lattimore. He rushed for 100 yards or more in three of the next four games, and when he pulled a hamstring, Kenny Miles was activated. Miles, who had been an afterthought all year with a torn wrist tendon, took over for USC’s final two games and led the rushing game. It’s Miles’ show again this year. As the No. 2 back all season, Miles has always been ready to go in. He received an extra dose of game prep for the past two weeks and will have freshman Mike Davis behind him; Wilds, on the potential redshirt list after a preseason ankle injury, will be ready to go in if need be. “Kenny is our No. 1, Mike Davis is our No. 2,” Spurrier said. “We have complete confidence in both of them.”

Will the Passing Game Be Ready? A key objective now for the Gamecocks to keep the passing game they established against Tennessee going. Now more than ever — with the running game again in flux — Connor Shaw has to show that he can lead the team with his arm. Shaw wasn’t hesitant last year, saving his best three performances

for his final three games. Like Spurrier, he took the Lattimore news with a stiff upper lip, assuring fans that the Gamecocks would play as hard as they normally do. “I really feel like we rallied around [Lattimore], there were a lot of guys including Tennessee players,” Shaw said. “If there’s anybody who can overcome this, it’s Marcus.” With their leader on the sidelines to supply an emotional lift, perhaps USC can re-channel what it had in the closing stretch of 2011. The talent is still there, and for what it’s worth, the Gamecocks won’t be facing teams the caliber of LSU and Florida, which ended their SEC championship hopes.

Win Anyway … Again Last year, the Gamecocks borrowed the slogan “Win Anyway” from the baseball squad, after the team had risen through numerous injuries but still won the 2011 national championship. It’s more of the same this year. “I think all of our players understand that no matter what happens, you have to move on,” Spurrier said. “You can’t sit around and mope.”

hen Shawn Elliott was hired as South Carolina’s offensive line coach in January 2010, one of his tasks was to upgrade the talent and depth along the USC offensive front. Fast-forward two years, and progress has been made. In the 2011 and 2012 classes, Elliott was able to help bring a group of offensive linemen numbering nine deep, including such highly touted high school performers as Brandon Shell and Brock Stadnik, among others others. In the 2013 class, USC has four more talented linemen committed, and the staff is in good shape with four-star performer Na’Ty Rodgers from Maryland as well. The headliner of that group is one of USC’s big in-state recruits this cycle: Dillon’s D.J. Park. Park had one of the more impressive offer lists in the Southeast when he pledged to USC in January: Auburn, Clemson, Florida, LSU, North Carolina, N.C. State, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest all extended scholarships to the 6-foot-6, 335-pounder. Park is rated by rivals.com as a four-star prospect, the 28th-best offensive tackle in the country and the fifth-

best prospect in the state of South Carolina regardless of position. Earlier in the year, gamecockcentral.com spoke with one of the coaches familiar with Park’s game. Lake City’s Jim Rowell had a glowing opinion of the Pee Dee big man. “The left tackle [Park] is the biggest high school football player I’ve ever seen,” Rowell said. “I’ve been to a lot of college games and seen college linemen that weren’t near him. The physical size on him is unreal … He’s a big kid who moves well.” Park, who could play on the inside of the line or outside at tackle, cited proximity to home as one of the main factors that led him to choose the Gamecocks. “I just wanted to go ahead and do it,” he said in January. “I just like being up there. It’s close to home and my family can come watch me play.” The talented lineman is also ready to get to Columbia to work with Elliott and the rest of the offensive line. “I just hope to adjust and go out there and do what needs to be done,” he said. “I think it’s great because I think [Elliott] does an awesome job with the offensive line.” In addition to Park, USC has verbal commitments in the 2013 class of offensive linemen from his teammate Bryce King (Dillon), tackle J.P. Vonashek (Kingsland, Ga./Camden County), and guard/ tackle prospect Alan Knott (Tyrone, Ga./Sandy Creek).

What Will We Learn From Arkansas? OPINION BY JAMES HARLEY

Take the case of ress in thisa laboratory regard. It really seemed the Arkansas Razorbacks, for example. Ranked in the preseason as a Top 10 team, they opened with a blowout win over Jacksonville State only to follow it up with an overtime loss to LouisianaMonroe. Surely that was an anomaly, right? Surely they would rebound? No, three consecutive losses later it was clearly established that the Razorbacks were not the team they were expected to be. Now, as we enter the fourth quarter of the college football season, what we learn each week is of even greater importance, and this week’s game with Arkansas should answer a few intriguing questions about South Carolina and its immediate future. The top question on the list concerns the skills of freshman running back Mike Davis. Does he have what it takes to carry this team next year if needed? With Marcus Lattimore questionable for next season, senior Kenny Miles gone and the rest of the backfield largely unproven, Davis could have a huge impact on the quality of the team. Miles will likely be the top guy for the remainder of this season, but with Lattimore out, we can expect to see Davis get a lot of carries over the next few games and perhaps a clearer picture of his talents. While Arkansas has not proven to be especially strong, as an SEC school, it should present enough of a challenge to help us really gauge Davis. Connor Shaw’s breakout performance against Tennessee raises the question of whether he is finally ready to be a big-time quarterback at the SEC level. Remember, he had a breakout performance against Missouri also, completing 20 of 21 passes, only to drop back to mediocrity in a choke-fest against Florida a few weeks later. Basically, he has defined inconsistency in his career at USC. So, while he looked great actually getting rid of the ball quickly against the Volunteers and racking up a career-high 356 yards as a result, there is still doubt as to whether he has learned something, or just had a

like he had the rhythm down against Tennessee, but until he does it again we really can’t be sure. Finally, we could gain some important insight this week into a big-picture question for Gamecock football. USC has been ranked in the Top 25 for 41 consecutive weeks; it’s beaten Clemson three years in a row for the first time since 1970; and it’s owned its SEC East foes during that same stretch. Add last year’s best all-time record of 11-2 and a bowl win over traditional powerhouse Nebraska, and here is a team that can finally ponder the question: “Have we moved into the elite category?” The Gamecocks’ two losses this year are acceptable, given that they were both to highly ranked teams. Even elite programs have to lose some. But such teams do not lose to lesser teams with losing records like Arkansas. If USC can close out its SEC schedule with a victory and then win out the remainder of the season, it should be granted elite status based on its accomplishments these past few years and the continued evidence of its coaching and talent moving forward. It would not be surprising, then, to find the Gamecocks in the preseason Top 5 next year. Obviously this involves more than just beating lowly Arkansas. But given that the Razorbacks have owned USC consistently since both schools joined the SEC — including winning five of the last six meetings — this is actually a bigger step than some may want to admit right now. This game, opening the fourth quarter of the season, is essentially a barometer for the remainder of the year as well as for 2013. The Gamecocks should beat the Razorbacks fairly handily and move further up the ladder based on what we’ve seen from Arkansas so far — but if they don’t, then it is back to the drawing board and yet another year of waiting for something really special.
