ait, didn’t South Carolina already play these guys? It certainly feels that way. 10

Georgia comes to WilliamsBrice Stadium on Saturday for what’s sure to be an electric atmosphere. An evening kickoff, under the lights, two of the nation’s top teams throwing down in a battle that may just decide which SEC East team gets to represent the division in the SEC Championship Game. This is what college football is all about.

But hold on. It’s October. The mornings and evenings are starting to feel a little chilly. The mercury is dipping into the 60s now after the usual inferno of a Columbia summer. What’s Georgia doing in town? The Bulldogs and Gamecocks play when it’s still dreadfully hot, the sun beating down on the

aluminum cauldrons that are Williams-Brice and Sanford Stadium. It is the early-season SEC game to watch. Carolina and Georgia, like Keith Jackson used to say, are two teams that just plain ol’ don’t like each other. They still don’t like each other, and the game will still help determine the SEC East championship — if not determine it outright. But thanks to the SEC’s new scheduling format, after adding Missouri and Texas A&M, the Gamecocks and Bulldogs are playing in October, and not in their usual early-September slot. It will take a bit of getting used to. “I’ve had reservations every two years in Athens in September,” groused Jake Franklin, a selfdescribed 38-year-fan who was reclining in his camp chair before

USC’s game against Missouri. “I knew to make them six months or so in advance. Thank God we got [Georgia] at home this year because now I’m going to have to readjust for next year.” Franklin was concerned that the SEC’s new scheduling would affect the USC-Georgia game in the future, but the SEC hasn’t said when the game will be scheduled in the future. The two new teams in the conference have seemingly already benefited USC — USC drops thorn-in-the-side Arkansas as its permanent SEC West opponent after this year; Texas A&M fills the spot going forward — and it kept another scheduling quirk in which the Gamecocks usually play Tennessee on Halloween week.

sons, the game was viewed as the matchup to decide the division. The Gamecocks won each time, and went to the SEC Championship Game in 2010, but were fleeced out of a repeat appearance last year even after outlasting the Bulldogs 45-42 in Athens. The Gamecocks downed Georgia but lost two SEC games, to Auburn and Arkansas. The Bulldogs, who started the season 0-2 (the first loss was to Boise State), didn’t lose another regular-season game, clinching the SEC East crown by one game over the Gamecocks. While USC beat every team in the SEC East, the division winner is decided by overall record, not division record, a fact that had Steve Spurrier lobbying for a change of the standard during the offseason.

Carolina and Georgia, like Keith Jackson used to say, are two teams that just plain ol’ don’t like each other. But USC and Georgia were so used to playing each other early. It’s not that huge of a deal — the game’s in October, so put away the short black dress and grab a jacket — except when it comes to potentially deciding the SEC East race. The Gamecocks and Bulldogs have played each other every year since USC joined the SEC in 1992, and outside of three times in that span, the game has always been either the season-opener or the second game of the year. In the three years that the Georgia game wasn’t first or second (2002, 2003, 2008), it was third. The winner of the game usually went on to have the better season, and in the past two sea-

12

(He was overruled.) Coming into this season, many pundits predicted that Georgia would win the SEC East again, due to another scheduling issue. USC was expecting to see Mississippi State, a team it beat last year in Starkville, but the game was dropped, replaced by a game in Baton Rouge against LSU, reigning SEC champion and BCS runner-up in 2011. Georgia, meanwhile, again avoids top-ranked Alabama, LSU and Arkansas for the second straight year. That puts another amount of focus on Saturday — if the Gamecocks win, they will technically have a two-game lead in the SEC East (one game above Georgia and holding the head-

to-head tiebreaker), although the season has a long way to go. While Georgia’s only two remaining tough games are against Florida and Auburn, the Gamecocks have to play LSU, Florida, Tennessee and Arkansas back-to-back-toback-to-back. If USC beats Georgia, it’s a cushion, but the Bulldogs could count on a USC loss to snatch that cushion away. If Georgia wins, the Bulldogs might as well make reservations in Atlanta on Sunday morning. “That’s what I want to know, is who they have dirty pictures of to get that deal two years in a row,” said another disgruntled fan, Reginald George, before the Missouri game. “I don’t know whether or not to save vacation time for Atlanta or LSU or what.” Implications aside, it is strange to see Georgia dotting USC’s schedule mid-season instead of that customary first quarter of the year. That date has spawned some epic battles. • 1993: USC’s Brandon Bennett dove over a pile of Georgia defenders for the game-winning touchdown with seconds to play, as legendary Bulldog radio voice Larry Munson implored his boys to “lay down, you guys!” • 2001: USC’s Brian Scott took away an interception from a defensive back for the winning touchdown, again with seconds to play. • 2002: Georgia’s David Pollack stripped USC quarterback Corey Jenkins as he was about to throw from his own end zone, and somehow managed to hold onto the ball as he fell to the turf for a touchdown. That was the winning score after USC drove deep into Georgia territory, but Andrew Pinnock fumbled away what could have been the gamewinning carry. • 2005: D.J. Shockley completed a 27-yard pass on third-and-22 to extend Georgia’s time of possession, ultimately denying USC enough time to get a game-winning kick in a two-point win.

• 2011: The Gamecocks won one of the wildest games in the series 45-42 as Melvin Ingram played the game of his life. He scored two touchdowns, one on a fumble return and one on a beautifully orchestrated fake punt, and also recovered the game-clinching onside kick. The Gamecocks have won two straight in the series and have never beaten Georgia three straight times. (This is the sixth time in the series that USC has a chance for a three-peat.) With several Georgia natives on the roster, it always becomes a pride game — the Bulldogs are USC’s closest conference geographical rival, and while the schools don’t often clash head-to-head for recruits, Georgia wasn’t too happy that the Gamecocks snuck into the fertile recruiting bed of Atlanta and came away with 11 area commitments last year. Carolina’s players have refused to look ahead, Spurrier saying that he doubts his kids know which team they’re playing each week, except the one that’s written in big letters on the dry erase board in the team meeting room. That’s always the next one, and no matter who the opponent was before it, the Gamecocks haven’t looked ahead. Of course, there was that one classic Spurrier jibe in the preseason, when he commented on the oddity of having Georgia mid-season. “I sort of always liked playing [Georgia] that second game because you could always count on them having two or three key players suspended,” he cracked. Folks smiled and shook their heads. Irreverent, yes, but also true. Georgia is healthy, as is USC. All players are ready for bad blood, and plenty of it, on Saturday. The fans are in it as well. It’s just strange to see the game come along now, where pumpkins are being bought and Halloween costumes are being planned. It’s a sign of the new SEC. “I liked the old sign better,” Franklin grumbled.

Recruit to Watch BY CHRIS CLARK

Defensive End Devin Washington

S

outh Carolina’s football coaching staff has had a lot of success recruiting and developing defensive linemen in the past several years under Steve Spurrier. Names like Melvin Ingram, Travian Robertson, Devin Taylor and Jadeveon Clowney come to mind, among others. To accomplish position coach Brad Lawing’s goals of “changing the DNA” of the USC defensive line, the Gamecocks have assembled a group that spans from highly rated prospect to sleeper, from a converted linebacker to an instant impact, can’t-miss prospect. Orlando, Fla., Jones High School prospect Devin Washington does not have the accolades of a Clowney, nor does he have the size of a Taylor. What he does have is talent to go along with heart. The 6-foot-3, 216-pound Washington drew over 20 scholarship offers during the recruiting process. USC’s staff offered a scholarship in February, and by May the three-star prospect was verbally committed to play for the Gamecocks. “I chose South Carolina because it fit me,” Washington told gamecockcentral.com in May after committing to USC. “I love the staff, the family environment, the team and everything about them. They know how to develop players.” Washington, rated by rivals.com as the 17th-best weakside defensive end prospect in the country and the No. 55 prospect overall in the talent-rich state of Florida, was the first pickup for

Height: 6’3” Weight: 216 lbs. Hometown: Orlando, fla. School: Jones high school Gamecock running backs coach Everette Sands, who recruits the Orlando area for USC. Another factor that drove Washington to choose USC, the program he favored for nearly three months before committing, was the education. “They have the No. 1 business program in the country, which was another sell for me,” he said. “So I just felt it was the right time to make the decision.” Washington is coached at Jones by former Miami University and NFL defensive lineman Kenard Lang. Rivals.com’s Kynon Codrington, who has seen Washington in person, believes he has good potential at the SEC level. “Good hand placement and has a great first step,” Codrington told gamecockcentral.com in a scouting report. “Needs to add weight to frame, but that should come in college. Student of the game and flashes the tools to be a solid BCS weakside defensive end.” Since his commitment, Washington has taken to social media and the telephone to tout Gamecock Nation to fans, as well as to other prospects he hopes USC’s staff can add to the class. Washington is one of 20 verbal commitments for USC in a class currently ranked 14th nationally by rivals.com.

Are USC and Georgia on the Brink of a True Rivalry? OPINION BY JAMES HARLEY

I

f you ask a Georgia fan who the school’s football rivals are, he or she will immediately mention Georgia Tech, Florida and Auburn. Press him or her further, and some will argue for Tennessee, and after a little thought, a few might even say South Carolina. After all, despite playing the Bulldogs very closely on numerous occasions, the Gamecocks haven’t really done much to stand in the way of Georgia’s success and earn serious rival status. That might finally be changing.

A geographic rivalry doesn’t have to be historically competitive to be valid. Indeed, many are far from it. Georgia holds a 23-game series lead over Georgia Tech, Southern Cal leads UCLA by 16 — and I will not sully this page by even mentioning the USC-Clemson standings. But in order to establish a true rivalry across state lines, there needs to be at least occasional national — or at least regional or conference — significance to the annual meeting. Despite Georgia being seventh on USC’s list of most-played opponents — 64

games — this has rarely been the case. To put it bluntly, the Bulldogs have owned USC for much of their history, putting together multiple 10-game winning streaks over the Gamecocks (though the last ended in 1977), while never giving up more than two consecutive losses. A Carolina victory this year would finally break that chain, giving USC three straight wins over Georgia and four in the last six games (another feat never accomplished before), while also continuing to dial up the wider

being clearly the best team in the division; that’s certainly generated some talk, as has Steve Spurrier’s now-classic quip regarding the movement of the game from its usual early-season spot. “I sort of always liked playing [Georgia] that second game because you could always count on them having two or three key players suspended,” Spurrier said in the preseason. Add the drama of Georgia’s shady avoidance of any difficult SEC West opponents — the Bulldogs avoid powerhouses LSU

“I sort of always liked playing [Georgia] that second game because you could always count on them having two or three key players suspended.” — Steve Spurrier significance of the series in the SEC and the national polls. USC’s long climb to rival status basically began with joining the SEC in 1992. In the pre-SEC era spanning 34 games from 1894-1989, the Gamecocks were a horrid 9-23-2 against Georgia. Since then, the Gamecocks are 7-13, which might sound bad at first but actually accounts for almost half of their all-time series. It is a marked improvement, considering it has been achieved in only 20 years. Add the two wins just prior to joining the SEC (1988 and 1989) and USC is an almost-respectable 9-13 in the last 22 meetings. By this standard, the notion of a rivalry is somewhat legitimized. Rivalries also require some pot-stirring to inspire emotion, and while USC and UGA fans are generally respectful of one another, the tight race in the SEC East over the past few years is beginning to wear away at the cordiality. The Bulldogs won last season’s SEC championship despite USC

and Alabama, opting instead for traditional division doormat Ole Miss and a struggling Auburn squad — on its schedule again this year as a result of conference expansion, and it really is starting to look like all the factors of a genuine rivalry are present in the series. Of course, some of the increase in the importance of this game can be attributed to Tennessee’s downturn and Florida’s recent slump, so it could be that we’re simply experiencing a peak moment that will fade away if and when those teams return to power. I don’t think so. If the Gamecocks can ruin Georgia’s hopes this year by not just beating them but holding on to capture the division title, it will get under the skin of the UGA fans who have never really had to take USC all that seriously, and a true rivalry will be born. Keep up with Harley’s Side Line blog at free-times.com and his Side Line column in the weekly edition of Free Times.
