THE OFFICIAL STUDENT NEWSPAPER OF SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY AND A&M COLLEGE, BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA

Southern University has now welcomed back students on campus for the 2022-2023 school year. Unfortunately, for many students they were unable to secure on campus housing. This school year it has been said that Southern accepted around 1,900 incoming freshmen despite the fact there is only enough housing to allow 2000 students to live on campus.

He goes on to explain where you could find

Mental Health is also known as “The Quiet Crisis”. It is something everyone deals with whether they know it or not. You may be saying to yourself, “I would know if I have a mental disorder.”, but many people don’t! Everyone has or will experience small episodes of depression or anxiety in their lifetime. On the other hand, having acute episodes of depression, anxiety, or even hearing a voice when no one is around doesn’t mean you have a mental disorder. It’s actually more common than you think. If your emotions or behavior affects your lifestyle in a negative way, you may need to give in and seek help.

Parking on campus has been the subject of debate for decades now; both alumni and current students wonder where they could park, why they’re accumulating tickets, and how they can receive some answers. Za’Laya LeDay, a freshman Business major from Lake Charles, Louisiana, shares some of her frustrations as well. “Parking is okay if you know a good perspective of where you need to go.” She goes on to add, “I definitely do think the school needs to allow more parking in the front of the school as well.” The DIGEST met with the director of Traffic and Parking at Southern University, Eric Reid, to discuss the grievances and questions that we all desperately are searching for. Mr. Reid mentions that

It was brought to Mr. Reid’s attention to the student body’s thoughts and concerns about Traffic and Parking such as tickets, booting, and insufficient parking. He started by stating that Traffic and Parking gives students about a month’s grace period to get familiar with

the campus as well as learn different spaces to park. Tickets are only administered if you were to park in a reserved parking space, such as faculty parking. He says, “There’s no hidden agenda…everything we do is rules and regulations that you can find online.”

On Thursday afternoon, August 25, 2022, the University Counseling Center had their Annual Meet & Greet. It was scheduled to be on the lawn of the Counseling Center but due to the rain it was moved to the Intramural Sports Complex, also known as “The Rec”. Despite the rain, the event turned out to be a success. From free pizza and cold drinks to giveaways, the meet and greet had a lot to offer. Goodie bags were filled with lots of surprising prizes, such as Colgate teeth whitening kits. Students and athletes were excited with all the Counseling Center had to offer including games such as Connect 4, raffles, vendors, music, and plenty of dancing. It was a good time for both the old school and new school. DJ Curtis perfectly matched the playlist to both generations’ liking. Nothing but notable Southern classics were played. It felt like a mini party and family reunion going on a Thursday. Although there was a party feeling, the vendor

On July 10th, a near seven hundred of returning students were sent an email that their housing application had been received but that housing for the Fall 2022 term had reached full capacity. The email stated that Southern University is “not able to guarantee an assignment for said student on or before August 15th.” This created a lot of social uproar for students. Almost everyone knows someone that has lost their life to mental illness and didn’t know that they were dealing with it. It’s important to check on others and to even check on yourself. Putting yourself first is one of the most important things to do for your mental health. It’s okay to say, “No”. It’s okay to say, “Not today.” Even though it may be hard to let someone down, saying those one or two words can be the start of self prioritization.

Southern University’s Class of 2026 had their first moment in history at the F.G Clark Activity Center. On August 14th, a New Student Induction and Pinning Ceremony was held for all first year and first-time transfer scholars. The ceremony was held to reassure that students will receive support from faculty, staff, and administrators while matriculating their four-year journey. Students had the opportunity to recite the First-Year Jaguar pledge, sing the Alma Mater, and receive informative words from Ronald Jackson, PhD. The event was mandatory for all first year and first-time transfer Studentsscholars.wereintroduced to major faculty, staff, and academic advisors. They were also told to download all apps pertaining to class and communication from the Southern University system. Students with accommodations were told to contact and submit documentation to the Office of Disabilities Services located in Blanks Hall. Students were additionally reassured to register their vehicles and where not to park for the fall 2022 term to avoid being ticketed, towed, or booted. To avoid being purged from classes, complete the enrollment process, and make sure to pay all fees.

you to see what you can do, it can be overwhelming. The thought of letting them down and not succeeding can drive one into a state of mind that is not healthy. Many of them feel this pressure in high school, and it only intensifies when you get to another level, such as, college or even the big leagues. Counseling and talking to those that support you can help in more ways than one. Your peace of mind is just as important as your position on the team and the way you perform. “What are your educational expectations for this semester?”. She stated simply, “To stay organized, and to maintain a decent GPA.” Which is great as all students should stay organized and maintain a well decent GPA to succeed. Olivia Fadel was also asked if she had any advice for the incoming freshmen class. She sympathized, “Be open to everybody and be kind. Stay on top of your work and don’t party too much because there will always be another. Stay focused and keep your priorities

The Annual Meet and Greet proves that Southern is not just a “party school” as people mention on social media and in the streets. It’s possible to have fun while getting educated and the help you need. Shoutout to the Counseling Center for putting on such an enthusiastic event. It is so good that the event was not overshadowed by pamphlets and information. The idea of getting to know students informally is great and clearly making a difference.

The Traffic and Parking department are constantly the topic of discussion on and off campus, and Mr. Eric Reid wants the student body to know that they can always come down to the office with their tickets, questions, and concerns. “If you are unsure about where you can park, or what you got a ticket for, come down to the office and come find some answers!”

“I felt really bad for students who didn’t get housing, especially since not everyone can afford to live off campus or has access to things you need to be a commuter like reliable transportation”, said Taylor St. Vilus, a junior urban forestry major. After the email was sent out, students scrambled to quickly find nearby apartments or wait for an answer from the Housing department to state they had received an on-campus housing assignment. Sadly, for many students this process did not go “Ismoothly.hadapplied for housing as a returning student and I was told I was on a waitlist, and they would call and let me know if anything would change. I would every now and then call to check if they had any spots available because I was never getting any calls or emails from them about housing.” said Alissa Lambrecht, a junior mass communication major. She continues, “ One day I just so happened to call, and they said they had a room available and that I would have to come get it asap. When I got to housing, I was told to wait in the back

in all, incoming freshmen should enjoy their time in college. Keep your priorities first and stay grounded to what is true to you. Be the change you wish to see in your own generation. Most importantly have fun wile doing it. Over these next four years of your life, you will experience growing pain, just remember that everything happens for a reason in each season.

Another sad reality from this housing crisis is the number of incoming freshmen who must go elsewhere to get their education because they also were on the housing waitlist. The Department of Residential Life and Housing was contacted and did not release an official statement about any attempts to rectify this issue in the future. Hopefully this ordeal was a learning block for Southern University, and this will be prevented for future classes.

Terren Blackwell, a junior from Dallas, Texas, feels as if students are in a dilemma, stating, “Don’t penalize students for being in certain parking spots if parking is limited for students.” Mr. Eric Reid assured that there is enough parking for everyone on campus. “ Of the last 4 years I’ve been here, we’ve never had an issue with everything filling up…it’s just not in the area they want to be.”

Now, it has been expressed from various oncampus students that regardless of the electronic statement sent to students about the lack of housing, there are dorms that still have vacant rooms available such as Bradford Hall and Boley Hall. This issue of low availability of housing affects Southern students in more than one way. Since there were such a large amount of enrollment this term, dorms that were previously left empty to be COVID-19 quarantine rooms are now being used for normal student housing. This indicates that if there is a large outbreak of COVID-19 there is no place for students to quarantine besides their respective dorm rooms. This can create a major issue for faculty and students on campus.

the online campus directory which highlights different buildings to where commuter students could park on campus. You can go onto subr.edu, click on ‘Campus Map’ at the top of the screen, and press on ‘Parking’ to reveal the relevant parking to you. For students, the safest places to park would be the F.G. Clark Activity Center, the Mumford Stadium, and more. Faculty and staff have a plethora of places to park around campus and can park honestly anywhere.

Students also complain that they don’t have any good parking spaces, or many at all, that’s close to their classes equivalent to the faculty and staff. Therefore, students park in restricted places that forces them to be susceptible to being ticketed, booted, or even towed. This puts students in a hard place as tickets can rack up and place students into debt at the end of the semester.

The NFL has a strict code of conduct, but their punishment is never fair considering severe violations got weak consequences. It leads me to wonder does NFL know what is important to handle or are they willing to hurt the public for money to see superstars on the field.

The event was hosted by the intramural sports complex faculty members with Coach Tanner being one of the primary orchestrators of the event. We asked Coach Tanner the meaning behind Midnight Madness and his response was passionate, “This was something I started back in 2016…at first it was just basketball, then I added volleyball because the girls wanted something to do.” Since then, Midnight Madness has been held, besides Fall 2021 due to Covid-19, during the start of the fall and spring semester. The event was nothing short of a success Coach Tanner believes. When asked about the turnout of the event, Coach Tanner was ecstatic. Tanner said, “I haven’t seen the count yet, but I know it was like three hundred something males and about three hundred something females that came in and this was my first time having a DJ, so that made it much better.” One thing for sure, the event was filled with enjoyment, laughter, and it was just a great night out on The Bluff. Deshaun Watson: NFL did they get it right?

Deshaun Watson has talked to the media and has expressed everything he did was consensual, but to the public eye nobody believes that. Roger Goodell could file an appeal to have another judge look at it, but that would contradict his statement of whatever the judge decides we will accept. I felt that it was the right decision, but I wondered how more severe it could get if a women looked over it considering it was a domestic violence case.

It is that time of the year again with the event many Southern students love. That event being “Midnight Madness.” The event is a tradition that draws in a big crowd of students that include every classification who watch and observe their fellow Jaguars take over the complex for a night filled with high energy and nice vibes. As the day winded down on the second week of school, the Horace Moody Intramural Sports Complex hosted an event filled with pick-up games in basketball and volleyball. The event was a huge success according to students and event coordinator Mr. Tyrone Tanner.

The Queen Bey is back and better than ever! It had been six very long years since the world was gifted a Beyonce album. On July 29th, Beyonce made her return to the music scene with her album, Renaissance. This sixteen-track compilation was definitely a new sound for Beyonce. While the name of the album quite literally means rebirth, there is a very apparent inspiration from the dance/ house music hits of the 80’s and 90’s.Renaissance was bound to be a hit with the multiple collaborators that worked together on the piece. Some of the people responsible for the chart-topping tunes TheDream, Syd, Skrillex, and Lucky Daye. The album starts with the affirmation filled song “I’M THAT GIRL”. This opening number truly set the tone for the rest of the album. The next song “COZY” is the next up and coming anthem for self-acceptance. The song then has a breakdown to include the many colors that can be seen on the gay pride flag, an ode to the community Renaissance was written for and where Beyonce and her team found most of theirMultipleinspiration.seamless transitions are sprinkled throughout the track list. This is the type of musical body of art that you wouldn’t ever want to put on shuffle. One of the rising stars of the album is the futuristic vibe heard in “ALIEN SUPERSTAR”. The song’s chorus is beyond any doubt out of this world. On “CUFF IT”, Beyonce explains the joy of falling in love.

We’ve been through a lot together, and that’s why I can’t let it go. We’re a family” Code Blue’s goal is to grow with new members each year. Danielle offered words of motivation for those who are interested: “The point is to be yourself at all times. There are no stereotypes or judgement taking place. Come with energy, humbleness, and an open attitude to new ideas. It is a journey you truly do not want to miss out on. Good luck!” If you are thinking of joining Code Blue, do not be afraid to make that leap! Remember, you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, and trust us, this is a team you do not want to miss out on.

The chants of Big Freedia give that extra special touch on “BREAK MY SOUL”. One of the most shocking songs was none other than “CHURCH

Students could also pick up a variety treats along the way to keep their energy up while making their rounds. It was almost hard to navigate the isle ways to see all that Southern has to offer because the room was so flooded with people. According to the Assistant Director of Student Greek Life, Winton R. Anderson, this was great problem to have considering two years ago the event had been in virtual due to the pandemic. He elatedly stated, “I am proud to say we have outgrown the Event Center so now we are going to have go to the Mini dome, hopefully. I feel great about the event overall. I think it was awesome!”Aninteresting perspective shared from Anderson, where he felt like his position is a “calling of sorts”. “The work of student organizations is impactful,” he said, “while the academic side of the house

One thing Beyonce can do is shake the table and this hit does exactly that.“I literally listen to this album on repeat, she (Beyonce) did such a great job on it,” said Valerie Johnson, a senior English major. Welcome to the Bluff:A Magical Ride

Here at Southern University we pride ourselves with being THEE Standard even all the way down to something as simple as “Welcome Back Week”. This years theme was Jagnik. Not only did the week welcome incoming freshman and upperclassmen back to the bluff, but it also gave Jags a feel of the 90s Freaknik! Jagnik allowed students to get the true feel of the HBCU culture here at Southern University.

As if the collection of hit records couldn’t be any more iconic, the one and only Grace Jones is featured alongside Tems on “MOVE”. All in all, this album is amazing and should be added to one of your playlists as soon as possible.

Speaking with sophomore nursing major, Yakyra Parker, she exclaims that, the show was not what I expected, but I loved it…” Yakyra then goes on about how it left her, “confused and questioning ‘how is this possible?”. Although Yakyra was left a little on edge, she was thrilled by the show and wishes to see many more!

Being a Southern University Jaguar can be one of the most exciting but yet challenging moments in life. Considering Financial aid, cashiers office, housing, and even parking, students face these challenges everyday. Honestly students

accounts and expect them to pay it there. That’s ridiculous because if the student never gotten a ticket or even has a car to get one, why would they think that putting the tickets into the student account banner would make any sense? These police officers seem to think that giving out tickets to any one at any time will allow them to get more money out of us which is not the case.

Parking Tickets: It’s getting out of hand

shouldn’t have to go through these challenges . Think about it: students have to pay thousands of dollars in tuition and fees each semester. Why in the beginning of a new semester at the financial aid and cashiers office; there are long lines of frustrated and confessed students wondering why their classes, housing and meal plans are purged? It never fails: this is every semester. I believe this happens because someone is not doing their job or doing it at the last minute. The truth is we’re all guilty. Sometimes first time students do not have the guidance they need to be on top of their stuff and do it at the last minute. This is one of the

JagNik went down in the books for one of the best welcome weeks at Southern University. The standards are held high for the Dynamic Administration to continue to produce the best of the best events this semester. JagNik was an overall unforgettable vibe.

Picture this, you’ve just graduated high school and you’re now entering into what most people call the BEST HBCU in the land. Then boom… you’re hit with late fees, and financial aid lines, cashiers, housing, and even having to pay an arm and a leg for a parking pass.

SU26 received a warm warm welcome to the bluff this year. Welcome week 2022: JagNik was definitely a week to remember. The Dynamic Administration produced an entertaining fun filled week for the students. Taking it all the way back to the 90’s with the JagNik theme. Being that FreakNik was a popular gathering among HBCU’s. The Dynamic Administration unquestionably produced a satisfying imitation to the FreakNik movement.Theweek started with “Step by Step” dance clinic. This event should continuously be included yearly so freshman know the popular line dances.

To disregard the disappointment of not knowing SU’s popular line dances at events. Freshman really had a chance to learn every SU line dance. Including the well-known SU shuffle, Can’t Get Enough, Flex, I’m Lit, and of course Before I Let Go.

Finally, there will also be times where they like to put two tickets on a car which makes no sense. Not only is that just a waste of paper, but students will be bombarded with another issue that will stress them out even more if they already had a stressful day.

My attention was captured recently when I noticed trees being trimmed when crossing over the hump. More trees equal more oxygen being produced. Which we undoubtedly need being that we are surrounded by chemical plants.

Students even received the opportunity to meet the Dynamic Administration face-to-face.DuringMayberry Madness at the delicious Red Bean Monday. Students now know who to go to voice their concerns and opinions. Plus, there was a performance by none other than Code Blue the Stomp n Shake team that has definitely shaken the campus.

Being back on the Bluff I immediately think about crossing over the hump and looking over at the Southern topiary. The famous Southern photo spot is constantly trimmed, and the rocks are more marian blue than ever. The landscapers take pride in keeping our campus nicely trimmed. I’m certain that you see the effort they put in daily to maintain the yard.

paid thousands of dollars of tuition and unnecessary fees each semester? Make it make sense! Southern University millions of dollars a semester. There should be no excuse for why they haven’t built or made a parking lot available for students on campus.Even though students go through misshapes there were improvements to housing and the check in process. It only took a week to move everyone in and most students moved in during their check in periods. It was organized and fastAlthoughpaced.

SU: The good, the bad, and the ugly

Students are always busy dealing with classes, clubs, and jobs that they do not need the issue of trying to figure out where to park. Regardless, No student is going to pay for a ticket they didn’t deserve in the first place.

The landscaping services survey is available to students to voice recommendations and comments. If anyone ever feels the need to voice their concerns about campus grounds. Campus is flourishing and there are still landscape projects forthcoming. https:// www.subr.edu/form/20

According to the office of facility services, the landscape department maintains approximately 520 acres yearround. Besides the grass seeming to be being cut every single day. I adore seeing the grass being cut, the bushes trimmed, and an all-around clean campus. I feel it’s important to have a properly groomed campus.Eversince the new gazebos were built

main factors of late fees and purges. Other times financial aid and cashiers are so backed up with students they close out student banner accounts slower than others. My advice to SU students is please take care of your financial aid as soon as it opens. The earlier the better. You will want to keep this habit in applying for anything: housing, financial aid, classes, and even commendations if you have a disability.Parking is also one of the most unreasonable factors students have to go through. Why should students receive parking tickets after they get a decaf? Why is parking limited to students who

At Southern university, we have police officers that perform certain tasks such as checking IDs so that they know only students on campus, guarding the door for events so that when there is a shooting, they will be there to arrest the shooter, and giving parking tickets to students that park in places that they should not be in. However, there seems to be issues with how police officers handle parking tickets.Inmy opinion, I believe that they should give out parking tickets when its necessary. Six times out of ten, that seems to be the case. The other four is not. These police officers try to give out tickets to students that park where they are allowed to park just so that they can get money out of it for the department. That is so selfish because so many students are already in debt from loans and the officers expect us to just pay for tickets that they slap on our windshield wipers. That not all, they also try to put the tickets in the student’s

In conclusion These police officers need to understand that they can’t just throw tickets on any car because they want to.

OPINION www.southerndigest.com

Magic on the Bluff was something very different at Southern, in fact

a quite mesmerizing experience. I enjoyed watching the magic tricks and hypnotization. I was literally in shock the entire show. Later in the week was Trap Bingo which was mostly singing the lyrics to every R&B song that was played. Students screamed to the top of their lungs while playing bingo and trying to take home a prize.

Needless to say, the highlight of the week was Jagnik. From the throwback outfits to the music, and the strolling. Everyone pulled out their themed outfits even some customized creations. It undoubtedly gave FreakNik vibes as if it were in the 90’s. Ending things off with the famed Fan Fest. Fan fest allowed student athletes to give autographs and meet the students. As the seasons start students will know about the athletes and what athletics will have to offer.

SU has all these navigate misshapes, they also prepare you for life.

Of course, the Pretty Wednesday experience was an exceptional way to start the first Pretty Wednesday of the semester. Everyone was dressed to impress of course. Maybe even missed class to attend. Though it was hot, students still came out to participate in all the interactive activities. Including riding the mechanical bull, 360 booth, and even free snowballs and ice cream.

behind the union by Lake Kernan the continuous projects of enhancing the campus have continued to grow. Last spring the flower bed upon entering campus on Elton C. Harrison Dr. was revamped removing the old bushes and plants. Now there are new plants, bushes, and trees which gives the entrance a polished look. That simple touch shows students the effort being made to excel ourRaymondcampus. Plane Director of Grounds at Southern University explained how they plan as they are requested. “Our day starts at 6 a.m. we manage the day-today beautifying flowerbeds, grass, and bush-heads,” stated Plane. Upcoming there will be new flower beds by Moore Hall, to amplify the scenery.
