Terror filled the swamps of Lowndes County Wednesday night and crept into Wild Adventures to scare the pants off thousands of VSU students. It was the annual VSU student night at Wild Adventures’ Terror in the Wild event and many students braved the long lines to experience this year’s haunted attractions. “It’s my first time here, and it is a lot of fun,” Danielle Jordan, anthropology major, said. “I’d say it is a nice night away from school, and it’s free.” The employees at the park love putting on this special night for all the VSU students. “College students like to be frightened and they love Halloween just like everyone else so we are excited to have college students out, and getting into the Halloween spirit,” Micha Hogan, public relations manager of Wild Adventures, said. This year marks a rebranding of Wild Adventures’ Halloween event. This year features seven haunted areas including a spooky corn maze, the ghost train and the main attraction of the year,

Break-ins emerge as newest campus crime trend Ritsuki Miyazaki S TA F F W R I T E R rmiyazaki@valdosta.edu
The VSU Police Department advises students to be especially careful and to never leave their stuff unattended due to a recent string of vehicle break-ins. According to the media log from VSUPD, there have been nine vehicle break-in cases on campus reported this year. The areas of reported break ins include Sustella and Oak Street parking decks. According to Scott Doner, VSU police director, this can happen on any campus parking lot. “Since this can happen on any parking lot, I can’t answer which parking is the safest,” he said. “Regardless you shouldn’t leave your valuables like laptops, phones or even textbooks on the front seat to be seen. Take them with you or lock them in the trunk. Don’t give people opportunity.” Doner also mentioned that the most common way for people to break-in vehicles is through win-

dows. Forgetting to lock your vehicle or leaving the window open also present easy opportunities. According to Doner, since there are some security cameras that have been set on various parking lots, students still have the chance to identify the suspect--but the chances are very rare. “We do have cameras and try to look back the log, but it is still difficult to find out,” he said. “Cameras might not be spotted at the exact spot at that time. Parking lots aren’t always well lit—that’s one of the things we’ve been asking for.” Students that find themselves victims of such break-ins are encouraged to report it to VSU police as well as to check their car insurance policy. Some insurance companies require you to file the police report to cover the case.

It’s time to party. The SGA and CMVSU kicked off homecoming week celebration with a cookout Wednesday in Palms Quad in hopes of getting students hyped for the upcoming homecoming weekend. The event, hosted from 1-4 p.m., was designed with one purpose in mind: unity. “This event came right on time for homecoming, Jodi Walker, a freshmen biology major, said. “It brings up campus morale and inspires school spirit. As Palms Quad filled with Blazers, burgers, hot dogs and cold drinks, students were not only able to enjoy free food, but also free wristbands, pens, and cups detailing upcoming homecoming events—courtesy of

ack in September, the VSU Blazers played West Alabama, and the result was a disappointment. We’re aware of this by now. However, what was even more disappointing was the showing of those who had attended the game, those supposed to be loyal to Valdosta State. By the time the fourth quarter was half done, the stadium was near empty, and the once-loud Bazemore Hyder Stadium had turned into a mausoleum, with only the heartiest of VSU followers there to cheer their classmates on. Real good showing there, VSU. You should be real proud of yourselves, walking away from your classmates like that. Imagine just how the football team felt, to see the people who they thought was supporting them walk away and go home. They needed your support and
Plus, we don't think we'd really want to go into a class and look at the star linebacker in the eye and said “Yeah, I left after the third quarter because you guys were getting your ass kicked.” That just wouldn't work. However, there is still an opportunity to change that, and this week is the time to change that. It's time to end the idea that leaving early is a good idea if the game's become a lost cause. It's time to end the idea that it's acceptable to walk out on your classmates, because it's not. This week's perhaps the best time for that change to happen, too. It's Homecoming week, and VSU is playing Delta State on Saturday. Regardless of the outcome, or how the game seems to turn out, stay and support your classmates. Don't leave the game early, and don't walk away
you turned your backs on them. Shame on you. Sure, it may have been painful to watch, to see VSU lose a crucial game to a top rival, but your classmates could have used your support there, and that's just it. They are our classmates. The people who go into battle wearing the colors of Valdosta State are people that are just like you and me. We go to classes with them. We study with them. We share war stories of unfortunate moments in class with them. They're not the prima donnas who play in the National Football League who won't play for anything less than $50 million a year, so they can support their fifth house on Cape Cod or the payments for their new Lamborghini. The people that play for Valdosta State are our classmates. Simple as that.

from the people you go to class with. It's that support that they need that can motivate, and propel them to the top of the heap.
Besides, it'd be a lot better to look at the star linebacker in the eye and say “Yeah, I saw you guys kick the other team's ass”
instead of “I left after the third quarter because you guys got your ass kicked.”

hat is it about science that makes religious people cringe? When Georgia Representative Paul Broun told his fellow churchgoers that evolution and the Big Bang theory are “lies straight from the pit of hell,” I was so in awe of his arrogance and ignorance that I had to bring his story to light. What ever happened to the separation of church and state? Is it, like other aspects of the constitution, being trampled on? Like our right to assemble-- just ask the Occupy movement about that. There has been so much rhetoric about how science should be presented to the masses by politicians. There are now expectations that children should be taught “intelligent design” which is nothing more than religion wrapped in a pseudo-scientific package. But what makes this particular case so bad is that Broun is on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. How can a politician, especially one who is also a medical doctor, sit on such a board and make statements such as these? He was speaking at a church function for a local sportsman’s banquet where he made these
comments that reflect his religious beliefs. He excused his comments by saying that it was a private function and he was speaking off the record. Broun is entitled to his opinions, but to state them as facts calls into question his qualifications to sit on this committee. Well, what he should remember is that he is a politician speaking in front of people. His words are going to get recorded. Just ask Mitt Romney about his 47 percent comment. Second-- in this day of technology fueled reporting, could he have been any bigger of an idiot? You cannot so much as go to the library and not expect to be filmed, audio recorded, tweeted, Facebooked or any other number of technology driven tags.
“ Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts. ” - DANIEL MOYNIHAN
My issue isn’t that he said that the Big Bang theory is from the pits of hell, but the fact that he sits on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. I would imagine that the people on this committee are supposed to believe in science and

the scientific method. Still, when he comments that the Earth is about 9,000 years old, contrary to evidence, his seat on this committee should be vacated and given to someone who does not allow their religious beliefs to override their job. If the world is actually 9,000 years old, then those poor dinosaurs may not be real either. A recent change.org petition is calling for Broun to resign from the House Committee. There are two in fact-- one that calls for Broun to step down and another that lumps him with Rep. Todd Akin, inventor of ‘legitimate rape’-- and calls for both of them to abandon their post. Instead of petitioning for his removal, perhaps voters should also look at the number of roll

call events that he has missed. According to a govtrack.us report, he has missed four percent of his recorded or roll call votes, which the site points out is well over the median of 2.5 percent. Dr. Broun is one of the early Tea Party types that were voted into office before the big “white wash” of 2010. What’s worse is that he is running unopposed in the upcoming election. That’s a shame because his district includes Athens, which has a fairly liberal voting base. I can only hope that he and his ilk are soon voted out of office. Then they can see what true evolution looks like.

Megan Fox welcomes baby boy H
ello world—Anthony here bringing you all the stories from Hollywood and beyond that had us talking this week. After taking some time off to become a mother to daughter Blue Ivy-- or as us commoners know her ‘The Golden Child’--, Beyoncé is set to make a major comeback. It was announced via the singer’s website that she would be performing the halftime show at the Super Bowl on Feb 3. Taking over from pop legend Madonna, Queen Bey is set to
perform some classics from her solo albums. Who knows-- she might even grant those other two chicks from Destiny’s Child permission to be on stage with her and crank out some old DC songs. One could only hope this performance marks the beginning of a new era for Beyoncé. Ever since her hiatus from music, the fans have been itching for something new. I guess only time will tell. In ‘the Kardashians are still getting more paper than you news’, it was announced that
Pop Addict Anthony Pope Khloe Kardashian will be cohosting the “X Factor” live shows with Mario Lopez. It was rumored that Britney Spears was joining the judging table and that show
producer/judge Simon Cowell has been wanting the Amazonian lady since day one. Khloe and Mario should bring a good mix to the all ready colorful panel of judges. If X factor can bring Britney back to life (and make her look amazing while doing so) then there’s no telling what’s going to happen with Khole and Mario. In other news, everyone’s favorite foxy actress, Megan Fox, announced her pregnancy. The sexpot announced via her Facebook page (Because Facebook is where real celebrities
stay in touch with their fans) that she had given birth to a bouncing baby boy who she and former “Beverly Hills 90210” star Brian Austen Green named Noah. Now that she has had a little time to adjust to mommy world, Fox can go back to doing what she does best, looking sexy for cameras. Another week of celebrity news and gossip has passed us. As always be sure to tune into Pop Addict next week so you don’t miss anything!

Let the art speak for itself. 'Just Suppose' art exhibit, located on the first floor of the VSU Fine Arts Building, hosts work by Jerry Uelsmann and Maggie Taylor. Uelsmann and Taylor are a couple from Gainesville, Fla. who have genuinely paved their way through the art industry. "It is a fantastic opportunity for the students, faculty and members of the community to learn from two true masters of their craft,” professor and Fine Arts Gallery Director Julie Bowland said. Uelsmann is a well-known artist who has been creating art for over 50 years. The medium in which he is known for is photography, and he has done numerous things to shape what is today's photography. “Our students read about him in the art history books,” Bowland said. According to Bowland, Uelsmann’ work set the stage for what photography artists strive for today. "His work could be described as surreal photo montages of dream-like imagery,” she said. “However it is all done in traditional black and white darkroom processing with multiple negatives and enlargers. You might say he was doing Photoshop before Photoshop existed." Uelsmann's work has been in several museums including: The Metropolitan Museum of Art in
New York, The International Museum of Photography at the George Eastman House, The National Galleries of Scotland and many more. Maggie Taylor is an artist who unlike her husband, works generously with programs like Photoshop and other computer illustrator programs. "Maggie Taylor, on the other hand, is very fluent in Photoshop and her computer generated illustrations are also very surreal and dreamlike in nature,” Bowland said. Taylor uses object such as toys and tintypes found online or in flea markets for her works. Instead of taking photos of people, she recycles unclaimed 19th century photographs with unidentified subjects. Taylor's works have been shown in many museums throughout the U.S. including: The Harn Museum of Art in Gainesville, Fl., The Harry Ransom Center at The University of Texas in Austin, Texas, The High Museum in Atlanta and many more. The exhibit began Wednesday and will run until Nov. 3. "This is a very important show for us, but I also think it will be one of our most popular and well-liked exhibitions,” Bowland said. Uelsmann and Taylor will also be keynote speakers at the Georgia Art Education Association Conference hosted by VSU's Department of Art. The conference will take place from Nov. 1- 4.

eight training or resistance training is sometimes over looked and out shadowed by its counterpart, cardiovascular training. It is important to have a healthy balance of the two when exercising. Weight training has many short term as well as long term health benefits that can support your healthy lifestyle. This article will outline some of the benefits of resistance training and why you should incorporate it into your workout routine. Many people pose the question: what’s the best or fastest way to lose weight? You may think the only way to lose body fat is to spend hours on the treadmill or stationary bike, but cardiovascular exercise is only half of the equation. To maximize fat loss you should couple your cardio training with some sort of resistance
With Devin Crudup It should be understood that losing body fat should be done at a healthy rate, usually one to two pounds a week. Many think that resistance training is only for building muscle and cardio exercise is only for losing weight, but in fact by building muscle you aid your cardio training and burn more fat. ple with more muscle content burn more calories during exercise as well as at rest than those with less muscle mass content. So even after you’ve left the gym your resistance training is still aiding in your fat lost journey. By increasing your lean muscle content you will decrease your body fat percent. Weight training has many benefits and is not only reserved for bodybuilders and guys. Ladies, don’t be disillusioned into thinking if you lift weights you will become too muscular. To reap the benefits of resistance training but not bulk up your workout should consist of a low to moderate amount of weight and high repetitions. It is important to keep your rep range between 10 to 15 reps per exercise. By doing this you will increase your lean muscle mass and become more toned. Weight training can also battle
osteoporosis, which is a lost of bone content, and occurs as you age especially in women. By making resistance training a habit and apart of your workout you can reduce your chances of developing osteoporosis later in life. Be sure to gradually introduce weight training into your workout and use proper lifting techniques. The benefits of weight training are endless and should be apart of every exercise routine, so next time your in the gym don’t pass by the dumbbells instead jump in on the action and reap the benefits of resistance training. See you next week with more health tips!
In 1978 violent protesters attacked the U.S. embassy in Iran. During the attack, six Americans escaped and found refuge with the Canadian ambassador. Argo is the true declassified story of the CIA’s plan to get them out. Ben Affleck, known for directing the heist flick “The Town”, takes up the role of director again for what may arguably be his best movie to date. The script is great--there is not a single cheesy line in the movie. It sucks you in and makes you really care for what’s going on. Its cinematography is nothing special, but that’s OK because it works well and there is little to no shaky cam. The story is what really stands out in a movie like this. “Argo” is a part of American history that was not declassified until Bill Clinton became president. Argo is fun, fast paced and gripping. The cast is one of the best I have seen this year. Af-

fleck does a great job as CIA. agent Tony Mendez, proving that he is not a bad actor-- he just picks some bad roles on occasion. The amazing Bryan Cranston, who is known for his role on the hit TV show Breaking Bad, proved that he is a great actor. Alan Arkin and John Goodman are a lot of fun as Hollywood executives that help the CIA. This movie had me on the edge of my seat. It’s one of the best movies to come out this year. Usually historical pieces tend to be dry and don’t speak to most audiences, but considering the location of this film it really shows that our problems in the Middle East go beyond the last 11 years and that’s something I don’t think about often. I recommend this movie—it’s awesome.

Xbox is now starting to ship out its Xbox Dashboard update. Those who are informed like me received the update first. It will roll onto other consoles within the next few weeks. It seems odd that Microsoft did not update all consoles like in the past. The update included the ability to PIN videos, games, or other content including Internet Explorer. The Windows Surface RT tablet has a price and launch date! A 32GB version without a touch cover will cost $499, but with a cover it will cost $599. A 64GB version with a touch cover will cost $699. You can pre-or-
der all of these models now. They will ship Oct. 26 with the launch of Windows 8 and Windows RT. The $499 delivery date has been pushed back three weeks because of the amount of pre-orders.

Lousiana State University quarterback Zach Mettenberger helped hand the South Carolina Gamecocks its first loss of the year this past weekend 23-21. The Oconee County graduate is used to taking rough hits as did in last Saturday’s victory but no hit compares to the one he had right here in Valdosta. Watkinsville, Ga. native Mettenberger chose to enroll at University of Georgia in January of 2009, following his redshirt freshman season, he battled for the starting quarterback position alongside current starter Aaron Murray. The former UGA Bulldog was dismissed from the team for “violating team rules” following his arrest outside of Flip Flops in Remerton, Ga. March 7 2010. It has been more than two
years since the 6’5, 222 pound quarterback was reported allegedly fondling a VSU student inappropriately which later led to him pleading guilty to two counts of misdemeanor sexual battery. “The sexual battery counts were the result of Mettenberger grabbing the breasts and touching the buttocks of the victim,” Southern Judicial Circuit district attorney J. David Miller said in an e-mail to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. He was charged that night with five misdemeanors including underage consumption/possession of alcohol and possession of false identification. While the alcohol-related charges were dropped, he was ordered to pay $2,000 in fines and perform 80 hours of community service for the sexual battery charge. Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kan. was his next stop where in one season he
helped the Grizzlies go 11-1 recording 32 touchdowns in the process. That December, on the first day junior college players could sign with four-year universities, Mettenberger signed with LSU over Alabama and Ole Miss. Rivals.com ranked Mettenberer the 11th best quarterback nationally of the 2009 class. The Tigers championship run last season was led by senior quarterbacks Jarrett Lee and Jordan Jefferson. This season the Bayou Bengals have gotten off to a good start stealing to big wins against Auburn and USC to a current 61 record led by Mettenberger. The judge’s decision along with the fines and service hours stipulated a condition that Mettenberger is banned from stepping foot in the town of Valdosta.
Chris Pope, who had 12 tackles in last year’s loss 36-33 to DSU, wants to redeem the Blazers more than anyone. The junior linebacker recorded a season-high 11 tackles in VSU’s win over UNA.
DSU’s middle linebacker Ixaiver Triplett leads the team in tackles thus this season. Triplett is ranked fourth in the GSC in tackles while Pope is third.
VS Lance Holder has filled big shoes replacing safety All-American Harrison Dreiling this season and must continue this weekend against one of conference’s best offenses.
Wide receiver Kevin Jackson is ranked second in the GSC in receiving yards behind Blazer wide out Gerald Ford. The senior wide reciever could have a big game against third ranked pass defense VSU.

The boys and girls Cross Country teams will look to make a statement Saturday at the Gulf South Championship race in Birmingham, Ala. Last season the men finished tied for fourth and the women finished sixth. The boys are led by Jesse Prince, Junior from Bonaire, Georgia who has finished first on the team for the Blazers in all four races this season. “We did some pretty hefty workouts last week and this week we are tapering down so our legs will be well rested for the race,” Prince said. “Today [Wednesday] we are doing eight 400’s when we usually do 16 so we’re taking it back a bit.” The rest of the team is led by Nate Wondimu, freshman from Lawrenceville and Parker Childree, senior from Valdosta who have finished second and third for the Blazers this year. Defending champion Alabama-Huntsville is the favorite to win the meet again this season but junior runner Ryan Beaudry is confident the team will improve on the fourth place finish from last season. “Our goal is always to win,” we finished fourth last year and our goal this year is to obviously do a lot better than that,” Beaudry said. “I definitely think
we are in a good position to do that.” The Lady Blazers are led by last week’s GSC runner of the week Juliana Boehm. Boehm came to VSU from Hirschberg, Germany to play tennis. This year was her first year running for the Lady Blazers and she has finished first for VSU in every race and first individually in two out of four races. “Juliana is our best girl and she has a great chance to win Conference individually on Saturday,” Beaudry said. Finishing sixth out of eight in the Championship last season, the girls have a much better chance at finishing top two with Boehm. They will also need a strong run from Ashley Luther who has finished second for the Blazers in every race. In the women’s race, West Florida is the favorite to take the title with Alabama-Huntsville projected to finish second. The GSC Championship will be one of the Blazers last races of the season, with only the NCAA South Regional in Tampa following it. This being only the third year that VSU has had a Cross Country team, both the boys and girls have improved every year. Saturday they will hope to do the same and show what this program can be in many years to come.
