Resources The Office of Student Life is considered the classroom without walls. Programming areas such as Leadership, Student Organizations, Intramural Sports and Recreation, and Student Media provide students with opportunities to form meaningful relationships with their peers. Paid and volunteer positions promote professional growth and experience. To learn more about Student Life visit bit.ly/ACCSL. The ACC Foundation administers more than 90 scholarships for ACC students based on financial need, family status, educational background or academic major. The foundation has raised more than $12 million to support college programs and scholarships. By filling out one general application, students are considered for all ACC Foundation Scholarships for which they are eligible. For more information and application instructions visit bit.ly/accfoundation. Computer Centers are located in or near each campus library. The computer stations are equipped with software for general student use such as writing papers, conducting online coursework, accessing the Internet, checking ACC Online Services, and using ACCmail. The Learning Lab environment encourages study, collaboration and academic progress through the following services: • Free tutoring is available in general courses including English, reading, writing, math, study skills, science and assessment test preparation. For tutoring in specialized areas such as English for Speakers of Other Languages, accounting, foreign languages and health sciences, check posted schedules and call ahead to confirm availability. • Computers with instructional software and applications are available along with personalized assistance as needed. *Handouts and study aids are available. • Study rooms may be reserved with an ACC Student ID card. ACC’s Libraries house more than 300,000 books across the 11 campuses and offer the following services: • Books can be transferred to the campus of your choice for pickup and returned to any ACC campus. However, reserve items must be returned to the original library from which they were checked out. • Computers and laptops are available for use in the library with an ACC Student ID card. • Students can print up to 15 pages a day for free. After the first 15, print outs

cost 10 cents per page. • Study rooms can be reserved. • E-Books are available. • Librarians can help students find books, correctly cite works in essays and suggest books for research. • Library assistance and online tutorials are available at library.austincc.edu. The ACC Transfer Academy helps students transfer to a 4-year university or college through a series of free workshops and events. All current and former ACC students interested in transferring are encouraged to attend. The Transfer Academy meets during the fall and spring semesters at each ACC campus with varying dates and times to accommodate busy schedules. For more information visit bit.ly/acctransfer. Green Transportation Initiatives are available to ACC students enrolled in courses for credit. A Green Pass allows unlimited rides on Capital Metro bus and rail services for the semester and can be purchased for $25 at any ACC cashier office. It costs 70 percent less than a comparable Capital Metro pass. Parking permits are required for students who drive to campus. Green Car preferred parking passes can be ordered by drivers of fuelefficient, low-emission vehicles and electric car charging stations are available. Now’s the time to sit down with pen to paper and develop a plan to ensure you’ve got enough money to meet your semester expenses. Tuition and fees, books, housing, and gas for your car are only the beginning of a long list of expenses you have each semester. Follow the steps below to determine if you’re set up to make it through the semester with money in your pocket. Do this on paper — just carrying it around in your head doesn’t count.

1. Know how much you have coming in. It sounds obvious, right? Although obvious, many of us don’t really know how much money we have coming in. Besides wages from employment, also calculate money coming in from side gigs (babysitting, working for delivery or driving services) as well as your financial aid awards (grants, scholarships and loans). What do you have coming in each semester?

2. Know how much you have going out. What are your monthly expenses? What expenses only happen once per semester (e.g. books and car registration)? What do you have going out over the entire semester?

3. Identify your shortfall. If you’ve got more money coming in, great! But more likely you’ve got more money going out than coming in. What’s your deficit?

4. Identify areas to cut back. Where can you (or are you willing to) cut back? Could you reduce your housing expenses by getting a roommate? Have you moved to a prepaid, no-contract cell phone? How about cutting back on eating out? Have you used local food pantries? Identify two areas where it’s realistic to cut back, and commit to cutting back.

5. Increase your income. This one sounds way easier than it is. Working more hours may not be the solution (remember for every one hour of class, plan to spend 2-3 hours outside of class). Have you completed your FAFSA? Have you visited with financial aid recently? You may need to take out a loan to cover your expenses. If this is the case, only take out how much you need to cover your expenses. And always, always consider federal loans first. Besides getting a better interest rate than you would from a private loan, you also have flexible repayment options, among other benefits, when compared to a private loan.

Presidential Student Achievement Award Winner

Kelynne Gaines Written by Mary Maule.

“...never look back and never give up.”

Despite his circumstances, Kelynne Gaines persevered to complete his associate’s degree in Japanese at Austin Community College in August of 2016. His journey began in his home state of Missouri, where he first attended college. At the beginning of his academic career, Gaines was unmotivated and unsure of which direction to take. He switched majors multiple times, but always pursued careers that were considered lucrative rather than following his passion. With an unclear goal, Gaines took a year off to figure out what he wanted to do. However, like with all journeys and adventures, the plotline came with challenges and difficulties. In his case, those challenges would require monstrous strength and perseverance. During this year of reprieve, Gaines’ mother and his best friend passed away within 5 months of each other. These circumstances were devastating and could have ended with him abandoning his goals to grieve. “After their deaths, I made a promise to them that I would pursue and complete my dreams

and ambitions of something that I love,” Gaines said. One of his passions is the Japanese language and culture, and his second interest is video editing and filming. He set out to combine the two interests into a career. Gaines had already integrated these interests into his everyday life, but he never thought they could be pursued in school or a future career. He began researching a degree in Japanese, but failed to find anything in Missouri. However, ACC and The University of Texas at Austin both offered a degree in Japanese and media production. Determined to proceed toward his newfound goal, Gaines moved to Austin. After being accepted into ACC, he promised himself that he would maintain a very high GPA, because he wanted to transfer to the University of Texas, and a higher GPA would improve his chances. However, his dream changed during his second semester at ACC when he met an admissions counselor from Temple University, Japan Campus. Being accepted to Temple in Japan became his new dream.

Striving to be admitted to Temple University and maintaining his GPA was not enough. Gaines also wanted to make a difference in his community and college as a whole. He became an active member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at ACC. This Society provided the support he needed, while he was able to reciprocate by helping others. “Phi Theta Kappa helped strengthen me in my leadership, fellowship, and commitment to academic success,” he said. Gaines achieved his goal and has been accepted to the Temple University, Japan Campus as a communications major with a focus in media production and anticipates moving to Japan in August of 2017. As the Fall 2016 Presidential Student Achievement Award winner, Gaines demonstrates drive, compassion, perseverance, and a sense of purpose. He advises fellow students to never look back and never give up. “Anyone is capable of succeeding at their dreams,” he said. “I turned something tragic such as my mother’s death into something positive that drove me to succeed.” Spring 2017 | 31

Michael Holman

Michael Holman demonstrates determination to succeed and commitment to giving back. His background as a home-schooled student followed by his immersion into a large institution like ACC have prepared him for a future career in nursing. His passion to become an Emergency Room Nurse was ignited by his father’s illness and

the effect it had on his family. Holman took advantage of opportunities to be a student leader and assisted in building up the community around him through involvement with organizations like Phi Theta Kappa, Student Government Association, Student Nurses Association and Student Life.

These candidates exemplified great academic success, dedication to servant leadership, and tremendous perseverance amidst their hardships. They completed their final semester at Austin Community College and participated in the December 2016 Commencement ceremony.

Yaritxa Rios Rodriguez Yaritxa Rios Rodriguez’s journey was shaped by her experience as an International Student from Mexico. She overcame the challenge of learning English and never lost sight of the importance

of giving back to the community. As a “gold member” of Phi Theta Kappa, Rodriguez joined the Helping Hands committee to help feed the homeless in addition to other volunteer activities.

Campus Team Outstanding Leader

Toby McKaskle Written by Cody Lee

Toby McKaskle has learned to fight his own battles, and as a result, has become a strong advocate for others. Growing up in Midland, Texas, McKaskle felt unwanted and exiled due to his sexuality. In need of a fresh start, he moved to Austin at the age of 18. Since then, he has grown into a leader with the ability to push others to be the best they can be. “Toby is a driven person who is constantly trying to promote a society of acceptance,” Ian Slingsby, fellow SGA and Campus Team member, said. McKaskle demonstrates this drive through his involvement with Student Life. He serves as LGBTQ Senator for the Student Government Association, as Vice President for the Gender and Sexuality Alliance and through the 28 events he directed as a member of the Riverside Campus Team. One such event raised awareness of anti-LGBTQ slang and its effect. “That’s So Gay,” produced and directed by McKaskle, demonstrated the importance of “watching what you say” and the impact certain words can have on the LGBTQ community. “That’s So Gay” produced one of the highest turnout rates of the campus team events and its message of societal acceptance and appreciation resonated with participants. One participant stood up and admitted to being unaware of the connotations and effect of certain statements they had been using. Reflecting on the event, McKaskle said, “I know it went well if I could affect that one student.” McKaskle’s desire to create change

in the world is a trait admired by his peers. Ronette Hoffart, a former Student Life Specialist, describes McKaskle as “an asset to our team, motivating those around him to strive for greatness.” McKaskle’s drive and perseverance have also been influenced by his physical struggles. Due to kyphosis, an exaggerated rounding of the back similar to scoliosis, he has had to power through spinal reconstruction surgery. Since the surgery, McKaskle said his physical challenges are much more trivial. For example, it became necessary to buy new clothes, because he grew three inches due to the spinal reconstruction. He must also explain to security staff why he sets off every metal detector. Despite such minor inconveniences, McKaskle is grateful for his new lease on life and the lessons gained from the experience. He said it’s taught him that any challenge can be tackled by remaining focused and determined. That same focus and determination has been central to McKaskle’s multifaceted involvement with Student Life at Austin Community College. He encourages his fellow students to do the same. “I feel a lot of students don’t take advantage of Student Life,” he said. In addition to his work for Student Life, McKaskle also holds three, one-hour study sessions a week as a mentor instructor for the U.S. Government class. McKaskle is a social butterfly who loves meeting and talking to new people. He enjoys gathering different

perspectives through interactions with students from all across the ACC District to broaden his scope and knowledge of the world around him. Because of his many roles and busy schedule, McKaskle finds that planning and staying organized are the keys to remaining on track. His advice for fellow students is to avoid procrastination. By keeping everything organized and tackling priority items first, much of the stress that could overwhelming is eliminated, he said. When McKaskle isn’t running around the Riverside Campus, he tries to separate from his busy work life by relaxing at home, hanging out with friends and working out. Having time to himself has been vital in maintaining his positive outlook and unrivaled work ethic. As a major in general studies in science, McKaskle plans to graduate from ACC in the spring of 2017 and transfer to Texas State University. He then plans to attend graduate school at the University of Texas at Austin to pursue either a career as a chiropractor or a politician. Wherever his choices take him, McKaskle will continue striving to create a society of appreciation and acceptance. He encourages students to accept and to love themselves for who they are and to not be afraid to make a change. Ian Slingsby Written by Alexander J. Lewis

Ian Slingsby creates the change he wishes to see in the world. “Creating a positive impact is trying to make a more comfortable experience for those around you,” he said. “It means working toward tolerance and acceptance.” Slingsby’s life is directed by deep ambition, care for others and a readiness to be involved. “Seeing what my mom went through raising three boys by herself put me on the drive of public service. And I’ve been doing public service since,” he said. Slingsby was raised in Seattle and about five years ago, he was working in Alaska. While there he witnessed the long hours and poor conditions under which many worked. This experience pushed him to move to Austin to join AmeriCorps, a civil society program dedicated to public service. In Austin, Slingsby spent two years at the Texas Conservation Corps during which he traveled often to the East Coast to aid cities and families who were struggling. For his efforts, he earned the Bronze Congressional Award and the Gold Presidential Volunteer Award. Slingsby’s service experiences moved him to attend Austin Community College to pursue a degree in Government. This degree, he said, would help him better serve others as well as fuel his high ambition for making a difference in the lives of those who are in need. While at ACC Slingsby continued on his path of service and maintained

high academic standards as well. Although he said he didn’t excel in high school because of a lack of motivation, now that he’s in college he maintains an impressive 4.0 grade point average. “When you’re going through school it’s hard to stay motivated, just because the work can be hard or you just don’t know what the outcome is going to be,” he said. “Find something that motivates you. Find the drive and go for it.” Discovering a student’s drive, to Slingsby, extends to the many cocurricular activities in which he’s been involved. His advice to other students who wish to be more involved is quite simple. He advises them to stop by the recruiting and information tables on campus set up by Student Life. “There is plenty of tabling and most students just walk by them. Go to a Student Life Specialist to see how you can get involved through them,” he said. “You don’t even have to be interested in government to be involved in Student Government or something specific in Student Life. Just go to the tables and you might see something that you are interested in. Just stop and talk to people at tables and at events.” As an active member of Student Life’s Riverside Campus Team, Slingsby produced events for the campus community including an event titled “Political Primary Kickoff” which encouraged students to find their inner political side. In his capacity as Riverside Campus

Senator for the Student Government Association and Vice Chair of the entire SGA senate, Slingsby has made a positive impression. “Ian has worked on his campus in a collaborative manner with both Student Life and the Campus Manager to make the students’ experience this year as positive and enjoyable as it can be,” Peck Young, Executive Director of ACC’s Center for Public Policy and Political Studies, said. Slingsby’s actions and integrity have made a positive impact on the quality of Student Life at his campus. “He is a ‘game changer’ by his involvement and his willingness to be a voice for our students regarding campus issues that impact them,” Riverside Campus Manager Franklin Taylor said. “Ian has been a strong example of how a friendly smile and a warm caring attitude can make a difference in another person’s life, which has made our campus a better more welcoming campus to our service area.” Outside of school, Slingsby enjoys spending time with his friends, break dancing and playing music – he’s a self-taught pianist. He currently interns under Rep. Chris Turner at the Texas Capitol. With his life so strongly driven by care for others, Slingsby’s definition for leadership comes as no surprise. “A good leader is not someone who tries to control, and demand, and just completely take over something,” Slingsby said. “It’s about stepping up when being needed.” Spring 2017 | 37

Campus Event of the Year

A Walk Through Time Written by Rene Ramos, Jr. Inspired by Black History Month, the South Austin Campus Team created “A Walk Through Time,” an event that informed students and allowed them to experience the history of African Americans throughout time. “The entire campus team worked together to create a timeline of events that was prominent or significant in African American history ranging from the 1600s traveling all the way

to the 21st century,” Elizabeth Morris, Student Life Coordinator, said. “Students had an opportunity to travel through that timeline and we asked them to reflect on that time period and kind of imagine what it would have felt like at the time.” A total of 95 students attended the event and it received rave reviews by the attendees which motivated the campus team to create a similar event

focusing on women’s history. “It ended up being very successful and we got great responses,” Morris said. “It was our largest event all year. People were asking specifically for more events like this.” The women’s history event surpassed the attendance rate of “A Walk Through Time” with a total of 114 students.

2015-2016 Pinnacle Team Contribution by Mauri Winters and Roberto Enriquez The 2015-2016 Pinnacle Campus Team included a diverse group from a wide variety of backgrounds, but the one constant was their desire to help others. “This team created several events to help educate themselves as well as their fellow students and give them resources they need to be

successful in college and beyond,” Mauri Winters, Student Life Coordinator, said. The team’s “Pick-a-Prof Meet-nGreet” event promoted interactions between students and professors outside the classroom. “Tuesday Talks” shared powerful presentations from the TED Talks

online database and prompted discussions on topics such as inspiration, fear, celebrating differences, and sustainability. “Seeing the Pinnacle Campus Team work together was a pleasure,” Roberto Enriquez, Student Life Specialist, said. “They were a cohesive unit and it really showed.”

Making Students Feel at Home While Abroad Bridges International is a non-profit organization led by students from Austin Community College to help international students feel acquainted with the culture and atmosphere in Austin, Texas while attending ACC. “We try to help new international students find a new home in Austin. We believe that we can create an international family in which we help each other,” Jose Miguel Capilla Bagatella, spring 2016 chapter president, said. “Our team is formed by other international students who understand how difficult it is to be

away from home and the challenges that international students face.” The organization also provides international students with weekly social gatherings to get to know each other and feel welcomed when living in a new country. “We do weekly meetings,” Capilla Bagatella said. “In those meetings, we play games, share experiences,

Spring 2016 Fun and Fit Fair Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society in which students at two-year colleges can gain experience in leadership and networking through service projects. Phi Theta Kappa invited students and guests of Austin Community College to join in their spring fitness challenge. The 4-week challenge included fellowship, group fitness workouts and a chance to win prizes at the fair. The money raised funded Phi Theta Kappa scholarships and the food collected was donated to The Storehouse Food Mission in Pflugerville. Along with the main purpose of promoting physical activity and raising money for scholarships, the fair aimed to connect people with

similar fitness goals, promote the exchange of ideas and facilitate the building of friendships. As an added bonus, students who volunteered earned service time and extra tickets for opportunities to win prizes. Due to the success of the fair, PTK donated over 100 nonperishable food items to the food pantry and over $400 toward scholarships. Local business owners donated over $1,000 in prizes that were given away to students and guests at the fair. Prizes included a full month of

workouts from Camp Gladiator, bowling for 6 people from Spare Time Texas Bowling, movie tickets from Cinemark in Pflugerville, dinner certificates to Outback Steakhouse, and $50 gift cards from A+ Federal Credit Union and HEB. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are privileged to have amazing organizations offering us the opportunities to get involved, to learn, to grow and to give back to society. Here are some ways that students are making their way to classes. Parking permits are required for parking on all campuses. The Rio Grande and South Austin campuses have parking garages. Ride Capital Metro bus and rail service Pick up your ACC Green Pass for $25.00 at any campus Cashier Office. Your Green Pass will cover an entire semester of Capital Metro services, so you’ll never need to worry about having spare change. Save money and get to campus with a swipe. Premium parking for ‘Clean’ vehicles If you drive a fuel-efficient, low-emission vehicle, you may be eligible to use preferred Green Car parking spaces at ACC. Spaces are limited, so a sticker does not always guarantee you a preferred spot. Start or join a carpool Save money on gas by registering to carpool with fellow ACC students. Carpoolers also enjoy special parking before 10:00am. Have an electric car? ACC offers charging stations for students at all of our campuses except Cypress Creek. Charge your vehicle for $2 per hour, or apply for a 6 month charging subscription for $25. Choose local ridesharing Austin is home to several ridesharing companies who strive to provide comfortable drive services to those who need to get around town.
