Monroe County

offers an unprecedented quality of life. With majestic mountains, stunning Tellico Lake, charming small towns and impressive historic sites, this county has a lot to offer. Monroe County nestled between Knoxville and Chattanooga, is famous for its friendly people, mild climate, unmatched beauty and diverse scenery, and its unique historical sites that help make it a must-see tourism destination. Monroe County is home to great outdoor sports with its forests, mountains, rivers and lakes. The county includes four incorporated towns, each with its own distinct personality. Madisonville is the county seat and is the childhood home of the late Sen. Estes Kefauver. The Monroe County Courthouse, built in 1892, sits in the middle of downtown and has been named an historic site and landmark. The City of Madisonville and local volunteers raised money to create a Veterans Memorial Park and the large American flag at the park can be seen from miles around as people travel on Highway 411 and Highway 68. Madisonville also is home to Hiwassee College, a four-year United Methodist Church college founded in 1849. Each summer, Madisonville shows its patriotic side with the Parade of Flags from mid June to mid July. Sweetwater is the county’s largest city and is located just off Interstate 75. The historic downtown area has been revitalized in past years and features many antique and gift shops and an art gallery. Just outside Sweetwater, people can explore

America’s largest underground lake at The Lost Sea. Each weekend hundreds of people can be found searching for bargains at Sweetwater Flea Market, a large indoor flea market just off Interstate-75 Exit 60. Sweetwater has a wide variety of events throughout the year, including an Independence Day Celebration, the National Muscadine Festival at the end of September, a Veteran’s Day Parade and A Small Town Christmas the Saturday after Thanksgiving. A downtown museum showcases Sweetwater’s history and is a popular attraction. Sweetwater has a grant project under way to build a train station replica in the downtown historic district that will serve as a visitors center.

Vonore is best know for its historical sites and Tellico Lake, a popular attraction for fishermen and boaters. Historical sites include the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum and Fort Loudoun State Historic Area. The town has its own museum next to City Hall as well. The town also is home to the county’s largest industrial parks including several boat manufacturers and a new biofuel refinery. Tellico Plains is the county’s smallest town, but during the weekends is a popular spot for motorcyclists and car club enthusiasts driving the scenic Cherohala Skyway. The town features several

art galleries and antique stores, a book store, the Cherohala Skyway Visitors Center and the Charles Hall Museum. And as the gateway to the Cherokee National Forest and the Skyway, there are miles of trails to explore, cool mountain streams to wade and fish in and picturesque waterfalls.

Coker Creek , an unincorporated community in the southern corner of the county, is home to several art galleries and Buck Bald, which offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding mountains. Each October, Coker Creek hosts the Autumn Gold Festival. The Tennessee Overhill Heritage Association (TOHA) promotes tourism in Monroe, McMinn and Polk Counties. TOHA just published 20,000 maps that highlight 39 tourist attractions in McMinn, Monroe and Polk counties. The maps will be distributed at visitor centers, at-

tractions and tourism businesses across the Overhill region. They will also be included in thousands of Tennessee Overhill information packets that are mailed all over the U.S., as well as several foreign countries. The maps are published in pads of 100 maps per pad to make it easy for display in visitor centers or businesses. Single maps can be easily torn off for people to take along. TOHA encourages visitor centers, tourist attractions, and tourist businesses to contact the TOHA office at 423-263-7232 or ndalton@tennesseeoverhill.com to request the maps. •

Rolling out second store

Sweetwater and Monroe County received a big economic boost with the opening of a new Walmart Super Center on Highway 11 in September 2013. The more than 150,000-square-foot store brought around 250 jobs to the community and added a second Walmart store to Monroe County. The new Walmart is expected to give the community a tremendous sales tax revenue boost and its location near the Sweetwater Kmart and Ingles creates a retail hub that will not only draw shoppers from around Monroe County, but will also attract consumers from nearby counties seeking a variety of shopping choices. Daniel Casillas is the store manager for the new Walmart.

“We are excited to add the first Walmart to Sweetwater and bring good jobs with great career opportunities to the area, Casillas said. Walmart promised the wide shopping choices and low prices it believes its customers have come to expect from the giant retailer. Casillas said plans are to have a gas station as soon as possible for the Sweetwater store. The plans for the new Walmart were announced in 2011 and work began a year later with ground breaking ceremonies in October of 2012. With nearly 100 acres of vacant land next to the new Sweetwater store, it is anticipated additional retail develop will take place in the coming years next to Walmart. Walmart’s decision to place a second store in Monroe County is seen as evidence that major retailers and developers have confidence in the economic future of the county.
