Margaret Noel, model mother selected to carry Olympic Torch “Words cannot describe my feelings. Imagine Muhammad Ali carried the Flame! I feel as if I have won a million pounds” Ms. Margaret Noel. She will carry the Flame on 24th July 2012 in the London Borough of Ealing

A model mother, Margaret Noel has been selected as Olympic torchbearer in the London Borough of Ealing. Margaret, 58, was nominated by her daughter, Collette Noel, without her knowledge. She’ll be carrying the Flame on 24th July

2012. “It was a shock for me because I did not know she had nominated me. I cried when I saw what she had written about me,” Margaret said. “I love the Olympics,” she said, adding that she was very proud to have been selected to carry the Flame. “Words cannot describe my feelings. Imagine

Muhammad Ali carried the Flame! I feel as if I have won a million pounds,” the joyful Margaret said. “Now that I have been selected to carry the Olympic torch I feel truly blessed, it is an honour, a privilege and I am immensely proud. I will be running for all young people out there as they are our future,” she said. By Stephen Ogongo Ongong’a

Here is what Collette wrote to nominate her mother My mother Margaret is a very positive, heart warming, inspirational, yet humble being. She lives and breathes doing outreach work in the community. Her 20+ years working voluntarily within the London Borough of Ealing has led her to make significant partnerships with schools, councillors and community police. She set up Descendants Youth Group, primarily for children of African and Caribbean descent but also working in partnerships to help the wider community. She also established an Achievement Awards Ceremony to recognise the achievements of young people and a Strengthening Families and Communities group with

support from hundreds of volunteers over the years. Most recently, she established ‘A Mothers Tear Drop’, an organisation dealing with the emotional onset of gun and knife crime in the community. There are a lot of people in this world that live for monetary gain but my mother has taught me about the rewards of helping the deprived and disadvantaged. When there is news of a disaster in the world, mum (Our Global Humanitarian) will be there planning to do some kind of fundraising. How can you describe internal beauty? I can - I just look at my mother. A friend to the young and old, a role model who is passionate and willing to help using her knowledge and wisdom to make a positive difference in her community. She has never said no, because ‘Actions speak louder than words’.

AFRUCA renews call for law criminalising branding of children as witches AFRUCA, a charity promoting the rights and welfare of African children in the UK, has welcomed the recent verdict in the Kristy Bamu child murder case and renewed call for action to criminalise the branding of children as witches. Kristy was murdered on Christmas Day by his sister, Magalie Bamu, and her partner, Eric Bikubi, who suspected the 15 year old of practising witchcraft. The teenager was found drowned in the bathtub of the couple’s flat in Newham in East London after being subjected to four days of extreme violence and torture. On 5th March 2012 Bikubi was sentenced to a minimum of 30 years while Bamu will serve 25 years for Kristy’s murder. Tier 2 work permit holders can’t change employers without UKBA’s permission In a written response to Ian Paisley Jnr, MP for North Antrim, Mr. Green said that “Non European Economic Area (EEA) Nationals entering the UK to undertake employment are protected by UK employment law. They have the same employment rights as settled workers.” He, however, pointed out that if an immigrant loses a job under the Tier 2/work permit arrangements, then their leave to remain in the country is curtailed to give them 60 days to find alternative employment or make arrangements to leave the UK. “Non EEA nationals entering the UK to undertake employment do so on the basis of taking a specific job with a specific sponsor,” Mr. Green said. “Individuals can change employers but must obtain permis-

and mini-cabs. “Taxi drivers provide a vital service so it is only right that the public are confident proper checks have been carried out,” Criminal Information Minister Lynne Featherstone said. “Good recruitment practices are a key responsibility for all employers. These changes will ensure that licensing authorities have access to relevant information to make informed decisions before granting taxi licences.” Previously only drivers who regularly picked up vulnerable people, including children, were eligible for enhanced checks. The new change in rule will standardise this practice for all drivers. The announcement was welcomed by groups campaigning for women’s safety. “We encourage the public to use licensed minicabs and taxis and these changes will give licensing authorities the information necessary to ensure that the public who use them are as safe as possible,” Director of the Suzy Lamplugh Trust Linda Craig said.

and protects non EEA workers from being underpaid. “It is the UK Border Agency’s duty to ensure that non EEA nationals entering the UK comply with their terms and conditions of stay and sponsors adhere to the obligations to which

they have signed up. Where overseas workers and sponsors abuse the immigration rules the UK Border Agency will take appropriate compliance action,” Mr. Green said.

New migrant domestic worker rules will facilitate slavery - Campaigners New rules announced by Home Secretary Theresa May for domestic workers will facilitate slavery and trafficking, say human rights charities Kalayaan and Anti-Slavery International. Ms. May announced that from 6th April 2012, private servants working for diplomats will continue to be able to come to the UK under Tier 5 (Temporary worker International agreement), if sponsored by the diplomatic mission. But the mission will need to add a ‘sponsor note’ to the certificate of sponsorship assigned to a private servant, giving the name of the diplomat for whom the private servant will work. The private servant will only be able to work for this diplomat. They will not be able to change to work for another diplomat in the mission, and must leave the UK when the diplomat does (or earlier). The private servant will be able to stay for a maximum of five years. Campaigners have pointed out that migrant domestic workers are vulnerable to horrific abuse and

exploitation as has come to light in a number of recent high profile cases in the criminal courts. According to the campaigners, the changes would mean that any domestic workers able to escape abuse will immediately lose their right to reside in the UK, therefore greatly reduce the likelihood that they would seek help from the authorities for fear of being deported. This policy would lead to the victims becoming ‘illegal’ and perpetrators going unpunished. Campaigners believe that the removal of the legal right to escape an abusive situation would result in domestic workers, desperate to earn money for the survival of themselves and their families, to go underground and create an underclass of unprotected and undocumented workers not protected under UK labour laws. Jenny Moss, Community Advocate from Kalayaan, a London based organisation that supports migrant domestic workers, said: “This decision makes no sense, its effects are entirely disproportionate to its aims and runs counter to Prime Minister David Cameron’s commitment to fight-

ing slavery, made on Anti-Slavery Day in October last year.” Before the right to change employer was introduced, abuse was even higher with 39% of domestic workers reporting physical abuse, 12% reporting sexual abuse, 89% having no day off and 100% reporting having worked an average of 17 hours-a-day. Audrey Guichon, Domestic Work Programme Co-ordinator, Anti-Slavery International, said: “By tying domestic workers to one employer the Government will effectively be licensing slavery, allowing employers to bring workers to the UK without providing those same workers any way of challenging or escaping abuse if it occurs. These proposed changes would give unscrupulous bosses the power to threaten workers with deportation if they do not comply with whatever they demand.” In June 2011, the UK government was one of the eight countries, including Sudan, which did not vote in favour of a new international convention that would help protect domestic workers from abuse and slavery.

10,000 people ask government to welcome refugees in UK Actors Colin Firth and Emma Thompson have joined over 10,000 people in asking the UK government to ensure refugees fleeing persecution and conflict are protected here. In signing the Refugee Council pledge, celebrities, MPs, peers, and over 10,000 people have declared they are proud the UK protects refugees, and are now asking the government to ensure refugees fleeing abuses in countries such as Syria and Iran are able to build a new home in safety here. Other celebrities who signed the pledge include Jon Snow, Esther Rantzen, Zoe Wanamaker, and Livia Firth. The petition was presented at an event in parliament on 15th March 2012 at which MPs and peers discussed the challenges facing refugees integrating in British communities, following the publication of the government’s controversial integration strategy. The event marked the end of a year of celebrating 60 years of protecting refugees

But it isn’t easy and refugees still aren’t treated with the dignity and respect they deserve. We must never forget the importance of giving people who have lost everything the chance to start again in a safe country and we can all do more to make the UK a welcoming place.” Donna Covey, Chief Executive of the Refugee Council said they were delighted that over 10,000 people signed their pledge in support of protecting refugees in the UK. “We urge the government to uphold its commitment to ensuring people who have fled horrors in their own country, like those we see taking place in Syria at the moment, are able to get the protection they need here,

and can start to rebuild their lives in safety,” Ms. Covey said. TV personality Esther Rantzen said: “When I was researching my relatives for the BBC’s Who Do you Think You Are I found out more about the terrifying experi-

ences and journeys that refugees are forced to make to survive. It was a humbling experience which made me realise why we must always do our utmost to be here for people escaping persecution.”

Reduce corruption in order to develop, Africa advised Exclusive interview with Austin Aneke, author of “Technology and Corruption: The Missing and Morbid Links of Development in Africa” A new book argues that Africa must rediscover its place in technology and minimize corruption in order to develop.

“African institutions must be strengthened to make sure that no one person is above the law. The rule of law and absolute supremacy of the law must prevail. The problem here is that those who are supposed to lead in this direction are the thieves stealing all the money. They cannot strengthen institutions to fight their loot”

“Technology and Corruption: The Missing and Morbid Links of Development in Africa” by Austin Aneke, reveals that while Africa isn’t as technologically advanced as other continents, corruption in Africa is highly visible in world politics. Mr. Aneke believes this scenario embodies the necessary and sufficient conditions for perpetual underdevelopment. “Having lived in both developing and developed countries, I was inspired to discover the reasons why western countries are developed and African countries are not,” Mr. Aneke said. It was this curiosity that drove his enthusiasm in discovering the root cause and writing about it. “Repeating the technological revolution that happened in England is crucial to development,” Mr. Aneke said. “No country can achieve sustainable development without doing this. Moreover the minimization of the mismanagement of vital resources for development is crucial for sustainable development.”

Mr. Austin Aneke, Author of “Technology and Corruption: The Missing and Morbid Links of Development in Africa” Mr. Aneke is the director/editor of UK Immigrant Magazine, and has previously worked as comptroller in a West African population agency. He studied sociology at the University of Port-Harcourt in Nigeria. He also pursued a master’s degree in criminology at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nigeria. Mr. Aneke then proceeded to London where he studied law at London Metropolitan University. He lives in

London with his wife and three children. Here’s an exclusive interview he granted The AfroNews. Austin, are African leaders more corrupt than western leaders?

Africa’s development, while corruption is the morbid link. Africa must acquire her own manuscripts and minimize corruption in order to develop.

Yes, African leaders are hugely more corrupt if you compare the huge percentage of resources they steal, in relation to the overall resources of their countries. I live in a country in the West where MPs are refunding as little as £24.00 over claimed money. In my home country of Nigeria, the Nigerian anti-graft agency EFCC is looking for more than 8 billion Dollars of funds stolen by ex Governors, ministers and others.

What role can ordinary Africans play in fighting corruption?

What role do western leaders play in perpetuating corruption in Africa?

International organisations like the Global Financial Integrity (GFI) are working hard and exposing corruption in Africa. The campaign must go on for greater results.

Western leaders welcome stolen money from Africa with open hand. In particular, (in the book) I mentioned Switzerland - a known recipient of stolen money and goods from Africa. Most western countries are considered secrecy jurisdictions hiding secret money from Africa. Why is corruption in Africa highly visible? It is highly visible because the funds politicians steal is so huge, and they wallow in aggrandizement enjoying their loots. This makes it more visible. Where is the link between technology and corruption? Technology is the missing link of

They must keep whistle blowing and screaming loud about it. They must be interested in politics, and aspire to take offices to change things. What role can international organizations play in fighting corruption in African countries?

How can African institutions fight corruption? African institutions must be strengthened to make sure that no one person is above the law. The rule of law and absolute supremacy of the law must prevail. The problem here is that those who are supposed to lead in this direction are the thieves stealing all the money. They cannot strengthen institutions to fight their loot. “Technology and Corruption” is available at Amazon. By Stephen Ogongo Ongong’a

THE GUIDE

Major changes to UK’s Immigration Rules Although changes are occurring in the Immigration Rules throughout the year, April is seen as a time when new changes do come into force. This year is no exception. As discussed in the last issue the Government have laid plans before Parliament detailing the changes to be made to the Immigration Rules. The following changes have been announced now and most will come into effect on 6th April 2012.

Tier 1 Tier 1 will see the closing of the Post Study worker route. This is a big blow to international students that value the opportunity to gain work experience after graduating. Although there will be the introduction of the Graduate Entrepreneur route, many students would not be able to meet the Rules for this.

Tier 2 Significant changes are being made to Tier 2. Those who entered on a Tier 2 visa after 6th April 2011 can only be granted a maximum of 6 years on this type of visa. Therefore Tier 2 visa hol-

ders will have to apply for settlement prior to reaching the 6 years. However applying for settlement is going to be difficult for many of those on a Tier 2 visa, with the introduction of the new minimum pay requirement of £35,000 if the appropriate rate for this employment is lower. This means that if the applicant is not earning a minimum of £35,000 when it comes to the time that they are looking to settle in the UK from April 2016 then they could be faced with leaving the UK and having to wait 12 months before they can apply to come to the UK under Tier 2. This will not only make it difficult for the applicants but also the employers. The reason that a person is granted the right to enter or remain in the UK under Tier 2 is because the vacancy that they are filling cannot be filled by the resident labour market. The employer has to spend a lot of time and money in filling these roles as it has to be advertised and candidates interviewed before the role is filled.

If these roles are filled by a migrant worker and the employee is with them for 5/6 years, at this stage if they are unable to offer them a salary of £35,000 then that employee will no longer be able to remain in the UK. It can be appreciated that few jobs, especially in the current economic climate can meet a salary of £35,000. In fact this would cripple many small businesses. However losing such employees will also have an effect on the business as they will have to advertise the position again and go through the recruitment and training processes. And the employee who will have established a life in the UK over that period of time will have to face returning. This does not feel as though it has been a thought out process by the government at a time when it should be helping small businesses to grow and expand. Most businesses will end up losing valuable employees who make a difference to their business.

Tier 4 – Students Changes that were announced in 2011 will be implemented this month. This includes tightening the time that can be spent studying at degree level and tightening work placement restrictions. Again these are all measures that punish those that are genuinely in the UK to study and further themselves. Currently the UK is seen as one of the top countries to come and study in. However with all the restrictions and increase in costs this may not be the case for long. This will not only damage the reputation of the UK but will also have a grave impact on the economic situation.

Tier 5 - Temporary workers Not many changes are being implemented to Tier 5. The main change is the length of time that temporary workers can remain

in the UK under certain Government Authorized exchange schemes to a maximum of 12 months. These schemes include interns, work experience and youth exchange programmes.

Changes in all tiers There are some changes which will apply to all the tiers. Firstly, curtailment will become mandatory where the applicant is no longer fulfilling the requirements of their visa. Also the level of leave a person has where curtailment will not be pursued will be reduced from 6 months to 60 days. Maintenance requirements will also be increased in all tiers between April and June 2012.

Visitors On a positive note a new visitor route is being introduced which will allow a small group of professional, artists, entertainers and sportspersons, to undertake short term, permitted paid engagements for up to one month In addition to all these, changes have also been made to overseas domestic workers and to those who are applying for an extension of leave. April is definitely the month for the dreaded changes. Everybody needs to make sure that they are aware of any changes that are due within their own categories to avoid breaching any laws or failing to meet requirements when it comes to extending their stay in the UK. Immigration and Human Rights Questions and Answers Question: I have been in the UK for nine years and have a partner and a child. My son is aged six years and was born in the UK. We are all overstayers. Is there anything we can do to obtain lawful status in the UK? Answer: Yes, you can make an application to regularise your legal status in the UK based on your having established both a private and family life and you can specifically seek to argue Article 8 ECHR 1998 which states: 1.Everyone has the right to respect for his private and family life, his home and his correspondence. 2.There shall be no interference by a public authority with the exercise of this right except such as is in accordance with the law and is necessary in a democratic society in the interests of national security, public safety or the economic well-being of the country, for the prevention of disorder or crime, for the protection of health or morals, or for the protection of the rights and freedoms of others.

ly have maintained and accommodated yourselves privately and without recourse to public funds, your lengthy residence, that you have assumingly not been in trouble with the police and have integrated into British society smoothly are all grounds to help make an application for regularisation of legal status. You should proceed with lodging an application under Article 8 ECHR 1998 and you should also obtain expert legal representation from a firm of specialist Immigration solicitors to assist you with the aim of regularising your legal status. This is because such applications require in-depth knowledge of Immigration law and policy as well as relevant case law.

Question: I know that my case is being processed under the “Legacy programme” but I’m very frustrated that UKBA have not yet decided my case and I heard the government charter was for UKBA to decide all Legacy cases by July 2011. Question: I have been served with removal directions as I overstayed my visa by four years. I have been in the UK for the past 10 years. Can I appeal the removal decision? Question: I was once married to an EEA national and obtained a five year residence permit based on my marriage which is due to expire in March 2014. However, we have recently separated and I’m worried the about my legal status.

Answer: Unfortunately Government did not satisfy its charter to conclude all cases outstanding under the Legacy Programme in July 2011. An overflow of cases remains unresolved and UKBA has established a department specifically assigned to clear through the backlog of these cases. This department is known as the Case Assurance and Audit Unit. Answer: Where divorce proceedings have not been implemented for at least three years (so the marriage lasted three years) and the EEA national spouse was exercising treaty rights, then it will be possible for an individual to make an application to “retain their right of residence” to remain in the UK. This effectively means that they can apply to remain in the UK for a further five years and if their application is granted by UKBA, then following completion of 10 years, the individual can apply for Permanent Residence and after a further one year of holding permanent residence they can then apply for Naturalisation as a British citizen. The law is as follows: A person who ceases to be a family member of a qualified person on termination of a marriage or civil partnership will retain a right of residence if: 1) the marriage or partnership lasted for at least three years immediately before the initiation of proceedings for divorce, annulment or dissolution, and 2) the parties to the marriage or civil partnership had resided in the UK for at least one year during the duration of the marriage or civil partnership, or 3) the former spouse or civil partner of the qualified person has custody of the children or a right of access to the children in the UK, or 4) there are particularly difficult circumstances (such as domestic violence) justifying the retention of the right of residence.

Answer: An appeal gives an individual the opportunity to present their case before an Immigration Judge in the UK. In practice it is often the best way to argue that a person should be granted leave to remain in the UK as the person can present oral evidence at an appeal hearing and have their witnesses also provide evidence which the Immigration Judge will consider on an individual case-by-case basis. The fact that you have been in the UK for a lengthy period of time of 10 years and that you were lawfully here for the majority (6 years) and overstayed the minority will allow you to rely on an argument under Article 8 ECHR 1998, specifically with respect to the private life you have established here. If you have been living in the UK with your partner then this will also strengthen your argument on the strength of the ties you have developed in the UK and also argue why you cannot relocate. If your partner is not a citizen of Ivory Coast, then an additional argument would be that your removal would cause the breakdown of a serious relationship as it is unlikely that your partner would be able or willing to locate to Ivory Coast owing to language barriers, employment opportunities and her strength of ties in the UK. You should proceed with the appeal but you should also obtain expert legal representation from a firm of specialist Immigration solicitors to assist you with the aim of regularising your legal status. This is because such appeals can be complex and require professional advice to help obtain the best outcome. By Raheela Hussain, Principal Solicitor of Greenfields Solicitors. Elections in Senegal prove “African democracy is alive” The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) in the European Parliament has hailed the victory of Macky Sall in Presidential elections in Senegal saying it is a proof that “African democracy is alive”.

Senegal’s President-elect Macky Sall

Guy Verhofstadt, President of ADLE said: “The democratic credentials of Senegal have been proven unequivocally by Macky Sall’s victory in these elections. In a region beset by unrest, insecurity and civil war, Senegal serves as a lesson in democracy.

The new President can count on our continued support in developing Senegal. I am happy to say African democracy is alive.” Louis Michel, MEP saluted the former President Abdoulaye Wade “for his dignified, responsible and constructive attitude to the outcome of the election.” The results of the elections in Senegal, Mr. Michel said, show that the Senegalese are willing to hold “Senegal up as a bastion of democracy.” He congratulated President Sall and expressed full support for his “political project to build a state which reconciles the neces-

sary social infrastructure with individual freedoms.” Mr. Michel said that President Sall shares his vision of Liberalism, which he believes is “the only political doctrine that incorporates a global idea of common well-being and creates the conditions for the well- being of everyone.” “I am convinced that a Liberal Africa which reconciles peace, prosperity, justice and turns its back on fatalism, neutrality and indifference deserves its place on the international stage,” Mr. Michel added.

There are not many bad officers, but every bad officer discredits the entire police force, and the nation,” Mr. Bunting said. He pointed out that across the whole of Jamaica, every officer is now being regularly reminded that they are always accountable, and that they are expected to show zero tolerance for any abuse of police powers. “Let me also say very clearly that the great majority of police officers are brave and conscientious people, who sometimes have to put their lives at risk to defend the people of Jamaica. The Government of Jamaica is to undertake a review of the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s (JCF) policy on the Use of Force, Minister of National Security, Hon. Peter Bunting has disclosed.

Respect legacy of forefathers, Governor-General urges Jamaicans Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, has called on Jamaica to respect the legacy of the forefathers and the foundation they have laid for nation building, even while embracing the future.

Governor-General of Jamaica, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen

The Governor-General, who was addressing a luncheon meeting at the Hilton Rose Hall Hotel on 22nd March 2012, following a tour of the parish, said “the work that our forebearers have put in, their attitude and relationships, their hopes, determination to leave something for posterity, should never be missed by this generation.”

He noted that with technology and the fast pace of activities today, it is easy to focus on instant results and forget the foundations that generate these results. “We must be careful that we do not forget the people who have mentored us, and have built the places that we now inhabit,” he stated. The Governor-General noted further that studies have shown that technological advances and the gadgets that come with them can cause humans to become less competent at communicating with each other, which can negatively impact the quality of human interaction. He said that everything possible should be done to preserve personal relationships that have been established, as they are essential for human development. The Governor-General further encouraged the present generation to strive to leave the places they now occupy better than how they found them, and to measure success not only by what is visible, but also by the obstacles that are overcome to

achieve results. Turning his attention to the crime situation, Sir Patrick said Jamaicans “must do everything possible to contain the monster of crime and violence, and reduce that as much as possible.” He stated that crime and violence have the potential of reducing the quality of relationships and disrupting economic and social stability. He made a call for all Montegonians to assist in strengthening the community institutions, such as the home, the church, the schools and other community structures, so that they can assist in playing a significant role in molding the lives of the youth, and inculcate in them, sound values. The luncheon meeting included justices of the peace, lay magistrates, representatives from the judiciary, and members of the business sector in St. James. By Bryan Miller, JIS Reporter

Nudity in Nollywood movies pathetic, says filmmaker Teco Benson Teco Benson, a Nigerian filmmaker has criticized nudity in Nollywood movies describing it as “pathetic”. In an interview with Nollywoodgossip, he said that excessive use of nudity in Nollywood movies portrays the decay in the society. Teco is from Anambra State. He is a Christian married with children. Teco, please brief us on how you ventured into the world of entertainment. I got into the film industry in 1994; two years after the historic “Living in Bondage” made its debut. Prior to that, I was into civil service. Out of interest and gravitational pull of destiny, I

delved into the industry first of all as an actor, and eventually as producer/director. What are the challenges you faced when you first started? When I started, my major challenge was the absence of books and training materials. Majority of the work was learnt practically in the field. I felt a strong push to study some basic theoretical frameworks of film making and storytelling. Eventually, this first challenge was overcome when I started travelling outside the country to receive training and invest in books/training materials. The second challenge was how to maintain the two jobs, film making and civil service. The salary from civil service, though never enough gives a kind of security

and confidence unlike film making which means I have to be on my own. But in 1997, I overcame the fear and resigned, a decision I am so glad with till tomorrow.

What have been your challenges so far?

Which film would you say has been your biggest budget investment for a single movie?

failure of the role models to live up to expectation. Unfortunately, the audience prefers to see such movies, hence the reason money conscious producers cash in on the opportunity to exploit that. What do you think of the movie industry of today compared to when you first started? There is remarkable improvement as well as some remarkable decay.

How do you get your funds? Which is the first movie you produced/directed?

I write and at the same time source and buy great scripts from great writers.

I get funding from investors, and sometimes I fund the movies myself.

Who are the actors/actresses you first worked with?

Which movie brought you to limelight?

Those days it was people like Liz Benson, Bob Manuel, Sandra

My very first produced movie “Compromise”, but the following movies amplified me. “Suicide Mission”, “Scores To Settle”, “State of Emergency”, “Mission to Nowhere”, “The Senator”, “War Front”, “The Price”, etc.

What’s your advice to the youth or upcoming actors/ actresses?

Which of your movies brought you your first award?

Are you married or seeing someone?

“The Price”. Tell us briefly about your current project. “Blood in The Lagoon” is a unique story that will blow the minds of the audience. A rags to riches story with the earlier part set in the slum of Makoko in Yaba where people live in, urinate/defecate, bath and survive in water. Shooting there was the biggest challenge of my life. It stars Omotola, Ufoma Ejenabor, Okey Uzoeshi, Eddie Ugboma, Bobby Michael, Cassandra Odita, Ben Nwosu, etc.

Mr. Teco Benson, Nollywood filmmaker says nudity in Nollywood movies is “pathetic. It’s a portrayal of the decay in our society, and the failure of the role models to live up to expectation”

The first movie I produced was called “Compromise”, but the first I produced and directed was called “Waterloo”.

Very married with visible evidence — five boys. Your greatest achievement? Difficult to pinpoint. God has really done a lot in my life. Your most cherished asset? The wisdom and understanding to survive and navigate through life, marriage and the murky waters of entertainment industry. How do you relax?

What do you think of the nudity now rocking Nollywood?

Browsing and researching, watching movies and playing with my wife and kids.

It’s pathetic. It’s a portrayal of the decay in our society, and the

“Ten Ten” by May7ven, Queen of Afrobeats takes UK by storm A new single by a young UK based Nigerian musician has made history by becoming the first hit by a female Afrobeats artist to be playlisted on mainstream radio in the UK. “Ten Ten” by May7ven was recently playlisted on one of the UK’s leading urban radio stations Choice FM. Not only was the massive single playlisted, it was placed straight into the radio station’s A-list - a mean feat even for some urban UK records, talk less of an Afrobeats record. The record - itself a clever dance mix infused with Afrobeats drums, heavy synths and a very commercial vocal sound - has been making waves in clubs and dance floors up and down the country for a while now and is now poised to chal-

lenge for a UK chart position when it is released properly in the coming months. “Ten Ten” is inspired by an old school playground game in Nigeria. Hailed as the first lady of Afro-beats,

May7ven, is a multi-talented, singer/songwriter, dancer and producer on a mission to break a cleverly Afrobeats pop infused track into the UK singles charts. Following the release of singles “Hands Up” and “Take off my clothes/Bo Aso La Ra Mi” in 2008/2009 topping the European & African MTV charts, May7ven, known for her elaborate and energetic stage performances has been touring extensively throughout the world. She has supported and opened shows for Akon, Sean Paul, Ginuwine, J. Holiday, Joe, D’banj and much more including making special requested performances for the Jackson family, the President of Nigeria, President of Angola and super brands including Mobile giants Globalcom, GSM, Nigerian Breweries, Zain, MTN and Nigerian Idol eviction show. She most recently stormed the stage at the sold out Afrobeats Festival at the HMV Apollo and Afrobeats Sunday at the 02 with ICEPRINCE in January 2012.

May7ven’s monster of a single “Ten Ten” is already a favourite of the likes of Choice FM’s DJ Abrantee who featured the track on his Afrobeat Mix tape. He is often heard reloading and blasting “Ten Ten” during his Afrobeats Radio show. May7ven’s big fans include Lethal B and Tinchy Stryder who have tweeted about “Ten Ten” and Donaeo who is eager to remix her hit and many more. She is also the only female in one of the biggest remixes of 2012 featuring Dotstar, ICEPRINCE, Wizkid and Dr Sid on the track “Expensive”. May7ven is a major part of the new wave about to hit the UK. Complete with her trend setting looks, style and most importantly killer vocals, she is ready to set the UK on fire with her dance skills often compared to Ciara, Beyonce and Janet Jackson, with an African twist. The Evening Standard has even described her as the ‘African Beyonce’.

Implement alcohol strategy now, government told

A coalition of national Churches and charities, including the Church of England, has welcomed the government’s plans to enforce a minimum unit price on alcohol sales. They have however warned that a long delay on implementation could cost lives. The groups wrote to Prime Minister David Cameron back in February asking him to introduce a minimum unit price, and have made a range of resources on the issues available as part of their Measure

for Measure campaign. Mr. Cameron is proposing to introduce a minimum price of 40 pence per unit on all alcohol sold in England and Wales. However, the exact details and time frame for implementation remain unclear. “We are delighted that the Government is resisting pressure from the drinks industry to take the action that is needed,” said Ruth Pickles, Vice President of the Methodist Conference, and a former alcohol misuse counsellor. “This move will save not only money, but lives.”

Studies conducted at Sheffield University indicate that introducing a minimum unit price will have a dramatic affect on problem drinking, with only a minimal impact on moderate drinkers. The researchers estimate that over ten years a 40 pence minimum unit price will save the nation £546 million in healthcare costs, £140 million in crime costs, £80 million due to workplace absence and £2.5 billion due to unemployment. The savings would be even higher should the Government choose to introduce a minimum unit price of 50 pence. However, Churches and charities have warned that a delay in implementing a new policy will only worsen the damage caused by cheap alcohol to individuals and communities. “The evidence speaks for itself,” added Ms Pickles. “We see no reason for a delay in implementing the measures when so many academics and health professionals are backing the move. We cannot act quick enough to save lives and safeguard the vulnerable. “Things weren’t always like this. Over recent decades, Britain has developed an unhealthy drinking culture, fuelled by a drinks industry which aggressively markets its products. We would also like to see broader action taken to address the root causes of this damaging culture.” A survey conducted in December last year revealed that 61% of UK adults believe that excessive drinking is a problem (from minor to major) in their neighbourhood. The survey commissioned by the Methodist Church and their partners

HPA: 9,000 new TB cases reported in 2011 Last year 9,042 new cases of tuberculosis (TB) were reported in the UK, provisional figures released by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) show. Compared to provisional numbers reported in 2010 (8,587), this is a five per cent increase. The figures, released in the HPA’s annual TB newsletter show that the main burden of this infection is still in London with 3,588 cases reported in 2011, accounting for 40 per cent of the UK total. According to the provisional data, country of origin was recorded in 8,453 new cases, and almost three quarters (6,270) were in non-UK born people. TB is an infection caused by bacteria. It usually affects the lungs, but can affect other parts of the body. TB is transmitted

when someone who has the infection coughs or sneezes, but it requires close prolonged contact in order to spread from person to person. Professor Ibrahim Abubakar, head of the TB section at the HPA, said: “Despite the observed increase in TB cases in 2011, this provisional data should be interpreted with caution because numbers are likely to change due to late notifications and de-notification of cases. It is therefore too

early to determine whether this is a return to the upward trend of cases seen in the past two decades in the UK.” P r o f e s s o r Abubakar noted that those in hard to reach and vulnerable groups, particularly migrants, homeless people, problem drug users and prisoners, continue to be disproportionately affected by TB. It is therefore crucial to put in place specific strategies to address this, he said. “In order to reduce TB cases in the future, it’s very important that health commissioners, especially in parts of the country with the highest rates of TB, prioritise the delivery of appropriate clinical and public health TB services,” Professor Abubakar said.

“We see no reason for a delay in implementing the measures when so many academics and health professionals are backing the move. We cannot act quick enough to save lives and safeguard the vulnerable. Things weren’t always like this. Over recent decades, Britain has developed an unhealthy drinking culture, fuelled by a drinks industry which aggressively markets its products” Ms. Ruth Pickles, Vice President of the Methodist Conference, and a former alcohol misuse counsellor asked people to judge the effects of alcohol on the area within walking distance from their home, or where they use local facilities.

KEY FACTS ABOUT TB • TB can be fatal if not treated • TB is usually curable with a six-month course of antibiotics which must be completed • Not completing the full course can encourage drug resistance • TB disease develops slowly in the body over a period of several months • Symptoms are: fever and night sweats, persistent cough, weight loss, blood in your sputum (phlegm or spit) at any time, a lack of appetite, fatigue and a general sense of feeling unwell • The infection requires prolonged and close contact in order to spread from person to person • Under half of cases in the UK have the infectious form of the disease • Most cases present little or no risk to others • It is very uncommon to catch TB from a child with the disease • TB treatment is free for the patient in the UK
