Nutrition & Eye Health

By Charlotte Meschede - Nutritionist

Introduction: I chose this topic as I felt that there is no focus on eye health until it is too late! We all tend to take our eye health for granted, until the time when we are faced with eye problems. Sadly, this may already be too late for full recovery and often people say to me that they wish someone had warned them sooner of how to look after their eyesight and eye health before it became a problem.

Not surprisingly, diet plays a pivotal role in eye health. How many of us remember our parents telling us that carrots helped you to see in the dark? That was possibly the only dietary connection that was made all those years ago, and I would suspect that not much more is being alluded to these days with regard to diet and eyesight!

Different issues with the eyes can occur as we age. Many of such are related to the eye becoming dry due to lack of fluid or as a result of oxidative stress which causes prolonged inflammation in the eyes, just as in other areas of the body. If we pay close attention to the specific nutrients that target the eye tissue, we can help our eyes before issues like these take root. We have discussed oxidative stress and what causes it many times in the articles I’ve written previously, and if we thoroughly understand the basis of this process, we can get a better idea of how to keep our eyes healthy and our vision the best it can be well into our old

age.

Just to recap, this is what oxidative stress means: Oxidative stress is essentially an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the body’s ability to detoxify their harmful effects through neutralization by antioxidants. Free radicals are those dangerous little compounds that are formed from any metabolic process, but we don’t notice them because they are usually neutralized through anti-oxidants. When there are not enough antioxidants in the body, either through diet or through the body’s own detoxification pathways, oxidative damage occurs. Unfortunately, the eye tissue is particularly vulnerable to oxidative stress, and often it mirrors the oxidative stress that is occurring in the rest of the body. A simple analogy to oxidative stress would be rust on a metal surface due to exposure to the elements – various tissues in the body are more sensitive than others.

What nutrients are needed to keep eyes healthy?

Nutrients that stand out with regard to keeping your eyes healthy include omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A and C and minerals such as zinc.

Vitamin A and its precursor, beta carotene, help by keeping the surface of the eye, or the cornea, moist and healthy. This is critical in keeping the eyes properly lubricated to avoid other problems later in life.

Omega-3 fatty acids need no introduction in regard to their anti-inflammatory properties. Many people do not eat enough fatty fish, avocado or raw nuts and seeds, which contain abundant supplies of essential and non-essential fatty acids. Ensuring an adequate supply of these foods is crucial. In situations where people do eat enough of these good fat foods, then supplementation is the only way to go.

The main function of zinc is that of transport, and it aids the absorption of many nutrients, especially vitamin A. Zinc helps to transport vitamin A from the liver to the eyes and also is an instrumental compound involved in the absorption of vitamin A. Whilst zinc is readily available in foods such as red meat, oysters, wholegrain starches and nuts such as cashews and almonds, processing of food will often remove the zinc, and many people are zinc deficient as a result. Selenium is another trace element that may also adversely affect eye health if it is not provided in sufficient quantities in the diet. It is a very powerful antioxidant, and a deficiency of selenium will prevent adequate neutralization of oxidative damage, as explained above.

AIM Products and Eye Health

Going back to what our parents used to tell us: “Eat carrots so you can see in the dark!”. The nutrient in carrots that is so important for vision is beta carotene, which as we all know a precursor to vitamin A. Deficiency of vitamin A causes blindness and whilst vitamin A, per se, can be toxic if it is taken in too large a quantity on an ongoing basis, beta carotene is not. A daily dose of AIM JUST CARROTS will supply all the beta carotene necessary to help us maintain the healthy sight our parents told us about. AIM BarleyLife and LeafGreens are still my favourites for providing all those leafy greens of which we habitually just do not get enough. Most importantly, the nutrients in these powerful food concentrates that matter to eyes are vitamin K1 and folic acid. The antioxidant enzymes that play such an important role in our detoxification pathways include superoxide dismutase, which remains in its active state in BarleyLife and LeafGreens by virtue of the fact that the product is produced from RAW ingredients, which preserves the longevity of its nutrients, especially those that are heat-sensitive.

AIMega is a wonderful supplement to use if a person is not getting enough good fats in their diet. Many people do not like the taste of fish, and avocados are not readily available the whole year-round. So getting enough of these essential fatty acids becomes more of a challenge. Supplementing with AIMega can really help to make good this deficit.

Proancynol 2000

provides a unique formula of powerful antioxidant compounds. I am never without Proancynol 2000 when I travel as it is my ‘go-to’ product when I feel my body needs a boost. As far as eye health is concerned, the antioxidant properties of Proancynol 2000 will go a long way to help neutralize the effects of free radicals and will definitely help to keep that oxidative stress at bay.

In conclusion, age-related eye health decline is a global health concern there is enough evidence to support that looking after your diet and ensuring adequate intake of specific nutrients will help to maintain your eye health for many years to come.
