Lymphatic What?

Of all the body systems that we may recognize, the lymphatic system is likely one of the least familiar. This network of tissues, vessels and organs (e.g., bone marrow, the spleen, the thymus and tonsils) maintains fluid levels in our body tissues in a manner similar to a drainage system that provides liquid balance.

The lymphatic system is actually a subsystem of the circulatory system. How? It collects any blood plasma, which is extracellular fluid that escapes into the space between cells. Then this system returns most of it as nutrient-rich lymph that is circulated back into the bloodstream through lymphatic vessels.

Not everything goes back into the bloodstream because lymph nodes act as filters that monitor and cleanse harmful substances from this colorless fluid that drains from cells and tissues. Thousands of lymph nodes are located along the expansive network of vessels in the lymphatic system.

The most familiar nodal locations are in the neck, armpits and groin, where lymph nodes can noticeably swell when infected by viruses or pathogens. That’s a visible sign of how our lymphatic systems are linked to our immune systems.

The Immune-System Connection

Lymphocytes are white blood cells that are vital to our immune systems, protecting us from all kinds of foreign microorganisms. The primary sites for the production of B lymphocytes (B cells) and T lymphocytes (T cells) are the organs and tissues of the lymphatic system.

As it happens, protective B and T cells are most likely to confront pathogens in the lymphatic system, making it an integral part of immunity even if it is not considered a formal part of the immune system.
